Teachers: The purpose of this lesson
is for students to tell something about
themselves in a visual way as an
icebreaker or introductory activity for
back-to-school or a new semester.
This activity is internet-based, so
you’ll need to have access to the
internet and this website: http://
www.sp-studio.de/index.htm
The website “SP-Studio” was
created by Janina Himmen and is
not affiliated with South Park or
Comedy Central.
Figure A: The home page of SP-Studio
OR...Possible ways of use without a class set of
computers or internet lab:
1. Use your projector and students take turns on the single computer.
2. If you have a SMARTBoard, you can project the website and have students take turns adding traits
to their caricature.
3. Have students draw their own caricatures similar to the ones from the website. They can use the outline
templates I included on pages 7-10.
Teachers: Distribute the planning guide, then follow
these suggested guidelines:
1. Direct students to go to the website: http://www.sp-studio.de/
index.htm (see figure A)
2. Have them begin creating their “mini-me” caricatures by clicking
on one of the elements they can add (such as “place” or “skin”).
3. Their decisions should be made based on the information they
filled out about themselves.
4. If they need to delete or change an element, they can click on it to
bring up a navigation window (see figure B). The “x” deletes the
element/object, the curved arrow allows users to move the object.
Figure B: Click on the “X” to
delete an element/object or the
arrow to move it.
5. If they wish to add text, they should click on the “text” option.
(They can also click on the “Menu Guy” to get the text options.)
Once they have the text as they want it (color, font, size), they
should click on the “OK.” They can move it later by clicking on the
text and using the arrow option (as shown in figures C and D on the
next page).

6. To save their final character
creation, they should click on
the icon of the disc. It will
automatically download the
image to their computer as “spstudio.jpg”.
7. Direct the students to read the
copyright guidelines for usage.
They may use the image on
their personal websites as long
as they create a link back to
the sp-studio.de website. Also,
Janina accepts donations as all
the artwork and upkeep of the
website is hand-drawn and
maintained as a hobby and
does not generate any income.
Figures C (above) and D (right):
Click “OK” after you have the text
as you want it to appear. Then click
on the text and use the arrow
option to move it.
• I have created an online
student handout with
examples and templates that
you may distribute
electronically. Click HERE to save in your Google Docs.
•Also, you can use this in a literature, history, or any other
content area unit, by having students create caricatures
from history or the characters from the novel/reading. See
my free download for that activity HERE.
Grading Rubric:
For these types of assignments I usually give a completion
grade, based on criteria I set beforehand. If you have specific
guidelines, you should include those in your grading rubric. Here is an example of a simple 12-point
rubric (you can multiply to make it worth more points):

EXTENDED ACTIVITIES...
• Make a group or class collage of caricatures to record favorites throughout the year (favorite
songs, poems, quotes, etc..). In the spring, students will have a collection of keepsake reminders of
the year. To execute this, students can use a collaborative document on Google Docs, or try other
file-sharing options. If you use Google Docs, here’s a template you can save as your own, then
share with your students: Back-to-School Caricature
• Start a “quote” wall where everyone hangs up their caricature and they add {appropriate} quotes
throughout the year.
• Use the students’ caricatures in an Open House presentation for parents, so they can see how
students view themselves.
• TRIVIA GAME: Place all the caricatures into a presentation document and have students (or
parents at an open house) guess who the classmate is.
• Yearbook/Newspaper: include the caricatures in the yearbook or school newspaper for a fun
feature, side-bar, shout-outs, quotes, etc..
• Use as a literature or history exercise. Have students create caricatures of a character or figure
from history from the assigned reading; they can include quotes from a passage. (I have a separate
download for that activity HERE.
