HELLO AND WELCOME...
...to The Electric Theatre
Hello and welcome to The Electric Theatre’s Autumn
Brochure!
The first part of this brochure will be familiar to regular
customers because our last issue ran from May to October,
instead of the usual May to August. Don’t be too sure you’ve
seen it all before though, because there are a couple of
changes and some notable additions, so make sure you read
right through from cover to cover!
We’re surely all aware by now that 2016 is the 400th
anniversary of Shakespeare’s death and many of you will
already have enjoyed the Let’s All Dance adaptation of Romeo
and Juliet in May. The Bard’s versatility is showcased twice
more in coming months, firstly with Return to the Forbidden
Planet (p14) – the musical based on The Tempest - and then
in an all-female rendition of Julius Caesar (p16).
These are just two of the productions in the GATA Autumn
Festival, which also includes Six Characters Looking for an
Author (p15), Smetana’s The Bartered Bride (p17), On the
Razzle (p18) and Elf Junior (p20). Anyone booking for three
or more of these shows will receive a 10% discount on their
tickets, just look out for the GATA Autumn Festival Offer
symbol. The penultimate week, of theatre-related workshops
and events, culminates in Remember Our Name (p19), which
promises “an electric evening of entertainment”.
Other regular features of the programme include our
September Film Festival (p7), the Guildford Book Festival
(p11) and the October Family Festival (p13). We’ve got
comedy in the shape of Pete Firman (p9) and Guildford Gag
House (p12). Our musical offering includes regular Jazz Cafés,
Surrey Mozart Players, Folk, Barbershop, Big Band and the
Sounds of Bublé, not to mention a tribute to Genesis (p10),
and the ever-popular 24-hour Musical (p6).
As the year draws to a close we’ve got four films with a
seasonal connection (p21) then we’ll be getting you in the
festive mood with our family entertainment Santa Saves
Christmas (p21), and of course Maypoles to Mistletoe (p22).
We look forward to welcoming you to our Theatre soon!

SHIRLEY INSPIRED

MARTIN SIMPSON
FRI 16 SEPTEMBER, 8pm
This will be Martin’s sixteenth appearance at The

review from Guitarist magazine says it all: “Martin
Simpson is a stunningly accomplished guitarist, but
he’s more than that: he’s a musician with the power
to make you forget you’re listening to a guitar at
all... the show he produces must rate among the
best man-and-guitar performances I’ve heard.”

TRUMBO (15)
MON 19 SEPT 8pm
124mins - 2015 - USA
dir. Jay Roach, featuring Bryan
Cranston, Diane Lane, Helen Mirren
In 1947, Dalton Trumbo (Bryan
Cranston) was Hollywood’s top
screenwriter until he and other artists
were jailed and blacklisted for their
political beliefs. Trumbo recounts
how Dalton used words and wit to
win two Academy Awards and expose
the absurdity and injustice under the
blacklist, which entangled everyone
from gossip columnist Hedda Hopper
(Helen Mirren) to John Wayne, Kirk
Douglas and Otto Preminger.
Nominated for Best Actor, 2016
Academy Awards
“What makes the movie work
are the lively performances, both
from the supporting cast and from
Cranston, who sheds the mimicry and
pontificating of earlier scenes to turn
Trumbo into a wry, self-deprecating
and somewhat cheeky older man,
even if he continued to stand up for
what was right.” Jordan Mintzer, The
Hollywood Reporter

On the Razzle bounces with joy and comedy chaos. Wit, slapstick, & double entendres explode in a
dazzling display of flapdoodle. Two shop clerks, in the absence of their boss, abandon their duties
and head to Vienna, ‘on the razzle’. Propelled into a chaotic series of high-jinx and wild adventures,
the hapless pair run ragged as they try to avoid discovery.
Entertainment on a grand scale perfectly giftwrapped by the master of farce, Tom Stoppard.

Everyone at The Electric Theatre
would like to wish you a very
MERRY CHRISTMAS
and a Happy Theatregoing Year in 2017!
Appropriately perhaps, our 2017 programme starts with a production by the Surrey Youth Music
Theatre, Songs for a New World: a moving collection of powerful songs, from Tony Award winning
composer Jason Robert Brown, that examine life, love and the choices we make. January 18th is the
20th anniversary of the opening of this lovely venue so we’re planning a week of events to celebrate 20
years of varied entertainment and passionate community involvement. Details are
still to be confirmed but we’re hoping it really will have “something for everybody”.
For two decades The Electric Theatre has provided a service that’s diverse, wideranging and extensive - so we hope you will join us for our Eclectic Festival.
