We are often asked to identify resources and services in the community for people living with these diseases and those who love and care for them. We are pleased to have contributed to The Alzheimer’s Resource Directory, and we believe you will find it to be a valuable resource in finding the assistance you are seeking, whether it be for health care, housing, or legal advice for yourself or your loved one. In addition, we offer information, guidance, and solace aroundthe-clock through our toll-free Helpline, in-depth and ongoing care consultation through our Connections program, more than 100 support groups for diagnosed individuals and their caregivers throughout our service area, and continuing education and training for family and professional caregivers. Becoming confused with time or place is 1 of the 10 warning signs of Alzheimer’s disease. Recognizing the symptoms is the first step toward doing something about it. For more information, and to learn what you can do now, go to alz.org/10signs or call 800.272.3900. When you need us, please don’t hesitate to contact us. Groups are facilitated by trained volunteers. Many locations offer specialized groups for children, those with early-onset and early-stage Alzheimer’s, adult caregivers and others with specific needs. To view these groups, their location and meeting dates go to the chapter’s calendar on their web site at www.alz.org/alzwa. or call 206-363-5500 or toll-free at 800272-3900 We also publish Alzheimer’s Resource Directories for: • Greater San Francisco Bay Area • Orange, Riverside & San Bernardino • San Diego • State of Idaho 206-999-7289 or e-mail: [email protected] Page 26 See category and abbreviation definitions on page 9 At Sunrise, we understand the challenges caregivers may face when caring for someone with Alzheimer’s or other related dementia. Use these tips to help you ensure you’re prioritizing your own health while maintaining a healthy and caring relationship with the loved ones you support. Know stress is starting to kick in The key to handling caregiver stress is knowing when it has begun to become unhealthy. Symptoms of caregiver stress include feeling constantly worried, sleeping too much or too little, no longer finding old hobbies interesting, gaining or losing weight, persistent headaches and becoming very easily irritated. Experiencing these effects, or a combination of a few, can harm your health if you don’t seek support. Remember that acceptance is key A lot of the stress that comes from caregiving is a result of anger or sadness over the elderly family members’ condition. However, you shouldn’t waste your time or energy worrying or stressing over situations you can’t change. It’s better to focus on things you have control over and to look on the bright side, such as the fact that caring for your loved ones has brought you closer together. It’s also easier to accept difficult circumstances when you have other people and activities to turn to that allow you to focus on yourself. Don’t ignore your feelings If you’re feeling frustrated and tired, you’re going to want to take a break from your role as caregiver. This is nothing to feel guilty about. AARP suggests appointing a friend or family member to talk to when you notice that your stress or negative emotions are starting to get out of control. If you think it will help, it may be best to make an appointment with a professional counselor who can provide relaxation techniques to assist you in moments of high stress. Take your physical health into account It can be tempting to rely on a lot of caffeine to help you through days when you feel exhausted and fast food when you’re crunched for time. Instead, fill your diet with fruits, whole grains, lean protein, vegetables and healthy fats like nuts, which will keep you feeling energized throughout the day instead of for a couple of hours like a pick-me-up from caffeine. Regular physical activity is also key, as it triggers the release of endorphins that make staying positive easier. Reality: As people age, it's normal to have occasional memory problems, such as forgetting the name of a person you've recently met. However, Alzheimer's is more than occasional memory loss. It's a disease that causes brain cells to malfunction and ultimately die. When this happens, an individual may forget the name of a longtime friend or what roads to take to return to a home they've lived in for decades. It can be difficult to tell normal memory problems from memory problems that should be a cause for concern. The Alzheimer's Association has developed information to help you tell the difference. If you or a loved one has memory problems or other problems with thinking and learning that concern you, contact a physician. Sometimes the problems are caused by medication side effects, vitamin deficiencies or other conditions and can be reversed with treatment. The memory and thinking problems may also be caused by another type of dementia. Myth 2: Alzheimer’s disease is not fatal. Reality: Alzheimer's disease has no survivors. It destroys brain cells and causes memory changes, erratic behaviors and loss of body functions. It slowly and painfully takes away a person's identity, ability to connect with others, think, eat, talk, walk and find his or her way home. Myth 3: Only older people can get Alzheimer's Reality: Alzheimer's can strike people in their 30s, 40s and even 50s. This is called younger-onset Alzheimer's. It is estimated that there are more than 5 million people living with Alzheimer’s disease in the United States. This includes 5.2 million people age 65 and older and 200,000 people younger than age 65 with younger-onset Alzheimer’s disease. Myth 4: Drinking out of aluminum cans or cooking in aluminum pots and pans can lead to Alzheimer’s disease. Reality: During the 1960s and 1970s, aluminum emerged as a possible suspect in Alzheimer’s. This suspicion led to concern about exposure to aluminum through everyday sources such as pots and pans, beverage cans, antacids and (continued on page 30) Page 28 See category and abbreviation definitions on page 9 Page 29 Alzheimer’s Myths (continued from previous page) antiperspirants. Since then, studies have failed to confirm any role for aluminum in causing Alzheimer’s. Experts today focus on other areas of research, and few believe that everyday sources of aluminum pose any threat. Myth 5: Aspartame causes memory loss. Reality: This artificial sweetener, marketed under such brand names as Nutrasweet and Equal, was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for use in all foods and beverages in 1996. Since approval, concerns about aspartame's health effects have been raised. According to the FDA, as of May 2006, the agency had not been presented with any scientific evidence that would lead to change its conclusions on the safety of aspartame for most people. The agency says its conclusions are based on more than 100 laboratory and clinical studies. Read the May 2006 FDA statement about aspartame. Myth 6: Flu shots increase risk of Alzheimer’s disease Reality: A theory linking flu shots to a greatly increased risk of Alzheimer’s disease has been proposed by a U.S. doctor whose license was suspended by the South Carolina Board of Medical Examiners. Several mainstream studies link flu shots and other vaccinations to a reduced risk of Alzheimer's disease and overall better health. A Nov. 27, 2001, Canadian Medical Journal report suggests older adults who were vaccinated against diphtheria or tetanus, polio, and influenza seemed to have a lower risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease than those not receiving these vaccinations. The full text of this report is posted on the journal’s Web site. A report in the Nov. 3, 2004, JAMA found that annual flu shots for older adults were associated with a reduced risk of death from all causes. The abstract of that report is posted on PubMed. Myth 7: Silver dental fillings increase risk of Alzheimer's disease Page 30 See category and abbreviation definitions on page 9 Reality: According to the best available scientific evidence, there is no relationship between silver dental fillings and Alzheimer's. The concern that there could be a link arose because "silver" fillings are made of an amalgam (mixture) that typically contains about 50 percent mercury, 35 percent silver and 15 percent tin. Mercury is a heavy metal that, in certain forms, is known to be toxic to the brain and other organs. Many scientists consider the studies below compelling evidence that dental amalgam is not a major risk factor for Alzheimer's. Public health agencies, including the FDA, the U.S. Public Health Service and the World Health Organization, endorse the continued use of amalgam as safe, strong, inexpensive material for dental restorations. March 1991, the Dental Devices Panel of the FDA concluded there was no current evidence that amalgam poses any danger. National Institutes of Health (NIH) in 1991 funded a study at the University of Kentucky to investigate the relationship between amalgam fillings and Alzheimer's. Analysis by University statisticians revealed no significant association between silver fillings and Alzheimer's. The abstract for this study is posted on the Journal of the American Dental Association Web site. October 30, 2003, a New England Journal of Medicine article concluded that current evidence shows no connection between mercury-containing dental fillings and Alzheimer's or other neurological diseases. The abstract for this study is posted on the New England Journal of Medicine Web site. Myth 8: There are treatments available to stop the progression of Alzheimer's disease Reality: At this time, there is no treatment to cure, delay or stop the progression of Alzheimer's disease. FDA-approved drugs temporarily slow worsening of symptoms for about 6 to 12 months, on average, for about half of the individuals who take them. Courtesy of Alzheimer’s Association web site: www.alz.org Page 31 Sunday Afternoon Drive Every Sunday after church, Mom and Dad would take a drive in their “Sunday Best” and stop for lunch at a diner, while I stayed home with Grandma. They were a handsome couple in their 1955 Chevy Bel Air, holding hands in the front seat. Dad would squeeze her hand three times tight as if to say ‘I love you’ and Mom would give him a wink. These long drives gave them cherished time together to reconnect. Today, it is getting harder and harder for Mom and Dad to connect. Dad is forgetful, which frustrates Mom. He forgets to take his blood pressure medicine, to lock the front door and to pay the bills. Mom still wears gloves and a hat to church but she is looking tired. The strain is apparent. If you have concerns, visit Áegis Living with your parent.
