TOURIST INFORMATION About Bologna and its University: Bologna, with its 372.256 inhabitants, is the capital city of Emilia-Romagna region, in northern Italy. Home of the oldest university in the Western world, "Alma Mater Studiorum", founded in 1088, Bologna hosts a great variety of students and scholars, who enrich and animate the city’s cultural VII and social life. Well known for its numerous towers and its long porches, Bologna maintains a well preserved historic centre, one of the greatest in Italy. Bologna, whose origins date back to at least one thousand years B.C., has always been an important urban centre, both culturally and artistically speaking. This is due to an homogeneous mix of monuments, architectural works (the medieval towers, the historical buildings and churches, the city center’s structure itself) and art works, which are the outcome of a first class artistic history. Bologna ranks often as one of the top cities related to quality of life in Italy. This is due to its strong industrial tradition and physical position - located at the crossing of the most important highways and railways in the country - as well as its wide range of highly-developed social services.
