The area is very lively, with many restaurants, cafés, shops, is served by public transportation and easily reachable also on foot from the city centre in about 15 minutes, walking along the world-famous Bologna arcades. Porta Saragozza is also the starting point of the Portico di San Luca, the 3796-meter, 666 arcade walk up to the Sanctuary of the Madonna di San Luca on top of the Colle della Guardia hill (296mt high). Arriving by Plane Bologna airport (http://www.bologna-airport.it/) is located about 6km north-west of the city, and is directly connected with over 60 destinations in Europe (including the major European hubs like London Heathrow, Frankfurt, Munich, Paris CDG, Madrid Barajas, and others) and in northern Africa by all the major airlines as well as many low-cost carriers. http://www.bologna-airport.it/uk/flight-information/destinations/?IDArrivo=INTL&IDFolder=1206&LN=UK From the airport, you can either take a taxi or the express bus BLQ (http://www.tper.it/content/linea-blq-aeroporto-stazione-centrale), which links the airport to the city centre and the railway station every 15 minutes. The bus makes three stops in the city centre before reaching the central station. Tickets (EUR 6.00) can be purchased on the bus and are valid also in the Bologna central area, allowing any bus change within one hour. On Saturdays and Sundays, when some streets are reserved to pedestrians, the bus route in the central area is slightly different (details on the TPER web site above, both in Italian and English). Arriving by train Bologna central station is located in Piazza delle Medaglie d'Oro, just outside the historic centre (about 1km north of Piazza Maggiore), at the beginning of via Indipendenza. It is also very close to the bus terminal (“Autostazione”). Bologna is a major Italian rail hub, so virtually any destination can be reached quickly and effectively. The high-speed network links Bologna to Milan in 1 hour, to Florence in 37 minutes, to Venice in 1h25 and to Rome in 2h15. Many regional and inter-city links are also available. The red dots show the location of some recommended hotels (see "Sleeping"). From stop 1 (Porta Saragozza): - Line 20 to the city center and north-east, every 5-6 min. at rush hours, 10-15 minutes off-peak - Outer circular lines 38 (to Maggiore hospital) and 39 (to the east of the city and the Fair) every 20 minutes - Line D to the center and the railway station, weekdays only, every 25 mins. - Line 94 to the center and north-east, weekdays only, every 30 mins (but faster). - many suburban three-digit lines, infrequent but fast to the bus station, which is near to the train station. From stop 2 (Aldini): - Circular line 33 (counterclockwise), operating every day, about every 10-12 minutes - Circular line 32 (clockwise), operating every day except Sundays and holidays, about every 10-12 minutes Almost every line in Bologna has stops in either Piazza Malpighi, or Via Ugo Bassi, or Via Marconi (the streets highlighted in green on the map). Bologna buses are integrated in the Google Transit system, so the bus stop locations and bus schedules can be seen in Google Maps, too. Several apps are also available for Android devices and for the iPhone. Bus tickets should be bought before getting on the bus, at any newsagent’s or tobacconist’s. The ticket must be validated inside the bus. The single ticket costs EUR 1.30, but multiple tickets are available (“city pass” ticket = 10 rides for EUR 12.00 instead if 13.00, usable by more than one people at a time, just validate it more as many times as the passengers riding together). Single tickets can also be bought on the automatic machine on board of the bus, but note - not all buses are equipped with the vending machine - there is an extra price (EUR 1.50) - the machine does not give change, coins are required. All tickets are valid for 75 minutes and allow any bus change within their validity.
