Career-Readiness activities expand
during 2012-2013 schoool year
Last school year, the work
began. It started at Ridgewood Middle School and
has expanded into Coshocton City Schools. What is
it? ...College and careerreadiness activities with elementary and middle school
students, facilitated, in part,
by the Career Center.
Studies show that children
who are exposed to career
training earlier are more
likely to feel confident about
their futures and better-positioned to succeed at college or in the workplace.
Many of these activities culminated in an art project,
activity or contest in which
students were awarded for
their work.
Additionally, postcards were
mailed to students’ families highlighting the value
of these career-readiness
program, earning positive
publicity for the sponsoring
district.

After researching the requirements of the job of a veterinarian, Central Elementary School sixth grader,
Kyrah Emerson (Right) puts the finishing touches on
her career mural, done in chalk on the sidewalk outside the school. Information researched and portrayed
in her drawing, include ‘educational requirements,’
‘typical duties,’ ‘expected salary’ and ‘future outlook’.
(*expected growth/decline). Tiffany Wolfe, CCCC
student ambassador (Left), helped Kyrah research her
chosen career.
This activity was conducted in May. The best drawings,
chosen for creativity and informational content, were
selected by a panel of outside judges, including civic
leaders from businesses and non-profits in Coshocton.
The judges were: Annin Flag Operations Director, Rick
Merrill; Chamber of Commerce Director, Amy Stockdale; CCCC Superintendent, Debbie Kapp-Salupo and
CC Job and Family Services Director, Mindy Fehrman.
Five student artists were chosen as having the best career portrayal. Each received a special gift bag.
What district guidance counselors think...
“The Career Center has been a great resource, helping us expose
and educate our elementary students on the world of work. The
activities they helped coodinate help connect students’ current
academics with future work in a career each student can get excited about, based on their personal interests and successes.”

“This year’s eighth-grade tours gave our students an
excellent opportunity and experience! Exploring all
possible options is such an important step in helping
our students become college and career-ready! “

5th-7th Grade:
A visiting eighth-grade student from Ridgewood High School, reaches into
an alphabet mystery box for a hidden object, which he must then identify, as
well as its starting alphabetic letter. The box, held by Early Childhood Education junior Courtney Alford, is an example of a literacy-readiness activity
which might be used in a preschool classroom.
This activity was part of a tour program to which every eighth grade student
in our county was invited, after completing a career development portfolio
and interest assessments with OCIS (Ohio Career Information System).
The student wears a toque, a special had worn to signify rank and provide
functional benefits to chefs working in commercial kitchens. (He had just
come from a visit to the Culinary Arts kitchen!)
