The evaluators interviewed many students and found one who they thought summed up the experience of most students going back to school as adults. She told the researchers that she loved studying at Literacy Partners, but “they put a hurtin’ on my brain.” This phrase has stuck in my mind because it reflects a certain reality of our work. Learning to read and write as an adult is an incredibly hard and sometimes painful process. But, with the commitment of our volunteers, the skills of our great teachers, and the generosity of a strong community of supporters, our students stick with it long enough to achieve their goals. Their ability to succeed sometimes comes as a surprise to our students, but never to us. We believe very deeply in our students and their capacity to learn new things. And year after year, they prove us right. This past year was a good one at Literacy Partners, despite enormous funding challenges as a large grant from the State of New York came to an end. Our results are getting better and better and I’m pleased to share some of our success with you in the following pages. Expanding educational opportunity to low-income adults who are trying to improve their lives is of the utmost importance. It is no exaggeration to say the future of our City depends on it. We deeply appreciate your support and look forward to your continued involvement in this vital cause. Sincerely, Anthony Tassi P.S. For the record, we sincerely regret if our teaching ever actually caused our students headaches. We’ll try not to do that again! 2013 ANNUAL REPORT LP102.14_AnnualReport_F2.indd 1 1 4/18/14 8:05 AM “The first time I felt proud of something I did was when I read out loud in class.” –Delmar D. 2 www.literacypartners.org LP102.14_AnnualReport_F2.indd 2 4/18/14 8:05 AM From Algeria to Zimbabwe and From Across the City Over 1,500 students from 95 different countries over 5 continents. First, we created a new system of defined semesters to break up the academic year into shorter instructional cycles. Then we made big changes in our process for enrolling new students. We recruit and screen students differently and no longer permit students to join a class already in progress. Together, these changes have brought more continuity and focus to our learning environment. Next, we increased the intensity of our classes – from 6 hours per week to 12 or 15. The conventional wisdom had long been that students could not commit to additional hours, given their busy work schedules and family obligations. However, we have found our students to be highly motivated and able to come to class four or five days a week. The results of these changes have been fantastic. Attendance rates are way up: between 67 and 80 percent of enrolled students attend class on a typical day. Student achievement is also way up: 63 percent of our literacy students and 76 percent of our English students gained the equivalent of one full academic year in just one 12-week semester. These results are well above the performance benchmarks set by the New York State Education Department and may just be our best results ever. We also made a big push to help students persist long enough to earn their high school equivalency (GED). In 2011, we helped 16 students earn a GED. In 2012, that number increased to 23. In 2013, more than 50 students earned a GED. With a high school equivalency, our students will qualify for more jobs and vocational training programs and be able to enroll in college – a dream for many of our adult learners. We celebrated these students’ accomplishments at our graduation ceremony in November. For many of our graduates, this was the first time in their lives that they have been acknowledged for their intelligence and achievement. We are proud to be a part of their success! 2013 ANNUAL REPORT LP102.14_AnnualReport_F2.indd 5 5 4/18/14 8:05 AM Strengthening Families Through Literacy A s Literacy Partners begins our 40th year of service, we have been thinking a lot about how we can deepen our impact. Out of these deliberations, we made an important strategic choice. The education of parents will be the focus of our work going forward. We made this choice in part because parents’ education levels are the biggest predictor of academic success of children. By focusing on parents of young children, our fight to end illiteracy will now prevent the problem before it ever begins. On almost every measure of academic performance – from the earliest signs of vocabulary development to kindergarten entrance exams and all the way to high school graduation rates – children whose parents dropped out of high school lag far behind their peers with better educated parents. When the challenges facing public schools are understood in these terms, the solution is obvious: parent education. Federal education statistics show how effective parent education can be as the achievement gap narrows with every increment of education that parents achieve from earning a high school diploma, to earning college credits, etc. As parents improve their own education, they are more likely to get better paying jobs and their children are less likely to grow up in poverty. Parents are also more likely to own books, read newspapers and create literacy-rich home environments for their children. Better educated parents tend to talk to their children more often and use a more complex vocabulary. All of these influences together promote stronger cognitive development among young children. Literacy Partners will continue to address today’s most pressing adult literacy problems, teaching basic reading and writing to adults and helping immigrant New Yorkers become proficient in English. We will focus on the skills adults need to improve their job prospects, earn a high school equivalency diploma, and go on to college. But, by tailoring our curriculum and supports to the needs of parents, we will serve many of our current students better and will break the cycle of illiteracy and educational failure before it captures the next generation. 6 www.literacypartners.org LP102.14_AnnualReport_F2.indd 6 4/18/14 8:05 AM 2013 ANNUAL REPORT LP102.14_AnnualReport_F2.indd 7 7 4/18/14 8:05 AM R eading is ultimately about inspiration. Stories have the power to change the world in ways big and small. We asked you to share the stories that have inspired you and here’s what you said. Laugh. –Assia W. 8 To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee It made a lasting impression on me as a young person and taught me not to make judgments too quickly and to seek out each person’s value. One of the reasons I appreciate LP and the students so much. –Robin A.. I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings by Maya Angelou I was bullied in Junior High and I used to go to the school nurse with a ‘stomach ache’. She’d let me sit on a cot and read. James Baldwin, Maya Angelou, Alice Walker, Ralph Ellison and so many more saved me. –Liz R. www.literacypartners.org LP102.14_AnnualReport_F2.indd 8 4/18/14 8:05 AM Random Family Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte Even though Jane Eyre is poor, unattractive, and shunned by her relatives, she finds the strength to go her own way, and finds the kind of love most of us dream about. –Amanda W. by Adrian Nicole Leblanc Never has any writer ever captured the daily reality of America’s underclass so personally and honestly. I finished Random Family over five years ago and it haunts me – and inspires me – to this day. –Liz M. #YourStoryNYC The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein I remember my mother reading this book to me and my older sister when we were children. When I had my son, I read this book to him at bedtime, too. It still brings a tear to my eye. –Emma D. 2013 ANNUAL REPORT LP102.14_AnnualReport_F2.indd 9 9 4/18/14 8:05 AM 10 www.literacypartners.org LP102.14_AnnualReport_F2.indd 10 4/18/14 8:05 AM Looking Forward Going Digital L iteracy education today means something very different than it did just 20 years ago. As more and more content moves from written text to online and mobile, we will expand online instruction and ensure all our students have the digital literacy skills they need to succeed in today’s world. Our 40th Anniversary O ur program started 40 years ago when a handful of volunteers began tutoring adults in reading. Along the way, an impressive group of visionary New Yorkers made Literacy Partners their cause and made it possible for us to serve thousands of New Yorkers. Throughout the coming year, we will celebrate the many accomplishments of our dedicated community of supporters, volunteers, and teachers. 2013 ANNUAL REPORT LP102.14_AnnualReport_F2.indd 11 11 4/18/14 8:05 AM 12 www.literacypartners.org LP102.14_AnnualReport_F2.indd 12 4/18/14 8:05 AM Corporations & Foundations $100,000 & up $10,000 to $24,999 Bloomberg L.P. But when the queen of detective novels, Patricia Cornwell, is the guest teacher, this lesson seems entirely appropriate. Sharing the ups and downs of developing her best known character, Scarpetta, Patricia said that writing was difficult when she first started—the struggle made her want to cry some days. Just as she persevered to become a mega best-selling author, she encouraged our students to do the same, to never give up on their goal of learning English… cadavers and all. William M. But, the most meaningful title for Victor is that of community-builder. In May 2013, the Literacy Assistance Center presented Victor with the equivalent of an Emmy Award for English teachers, a reflection of his extraordinary dedication to building a community of learners within the classroom. Accepting the honor at a packed ceremony, Victor said, “It is so amazing to receive an award for something you love to do.” Congratulations, Victor! Nan A.
