Russell Karting Specialties
& Italian Motors
invite IKF 2009 IAME Cup
Duffy Winner to IAME
International Challenge!
Russell Karting and Italian Motors announce the Duffy
winner of the IAME Cup at the 2009 2-Cycle Sprint Grand
Nationals will again be invited to participate in the IAME
International Challenge.
Jim Russell, Jr. of Russell Karting Specialties made a proposal to the IKF Board at the January 2008 Meeting that the Grand
National winner of the IAME Cup class would be invited to
participate in the IAME International Challenge. This driver
will represent North America in direct competition on identical
equipment against drivers representing other countries running IAME single make series. He proposed to continue this
program for 5 years, this being the second year. Jim believes
that this proposal will help draw racers to IKF.
Jim Russell, Jr. thanked IKF for making the IAME Cup a
10
National Class. Italian Motors and Russell Karting feel that
this should be a long standing program and continue for
many years to come. This commitment will help to ensure
the stability that the racer is looking for to make a complete
jump to race in your series. Our support would also be guaranteed for these years making the draw to your series that
much stronger.
The package, according to Jim Russell, Jr., is valued at
approximately $10,000.00. Motel, airfare, entry fees, etc are
all included in the package. There will be a few expenses
that the driver will have to pay for, such as passport and FIA
license.
The IKF wishes to thank Russell Karting and Italian Motors
for their generosity and for supporting IKF.

ALL YEAR
I-20 Speedway purchased in July, of 2003 a 25 acre undeveloped, richly wooded East Texas red clay plot. The red
clay makes for a perfect racing surface with the track and pit
area surrounded by a densely forested area that serves as a
beautiful backdrop for an awesome night of racing.
I-20 Speedway is a modern track facility with a concession
stand, “The Pit Stop” serving Texas style barbecue, turkey legs
and sausage on a stick, permanent restrooms, paved and covered exit area, concrete grid tech barn and adequate lighting
to light the whole facility.
Many of the racers at I-20 say that it is a drivers track
with a hard packed 1/6th mile long race surface, 10 degree
banking and wide sweeping turns with adequate run-off for
those of you who get a little to high coming off of the turn.
With the beautiful East Texas weather I-20 Speedway races
all year round, the Thunder series starts in March and ends
in October with the Monster Mash money race serving as it’s
last points race. The spring money race, The Delores Wilder
Memorial Race is held the first Saturday of April each year
and winter racing from November through February on Sunday afternoon.

each year in October this year the 24th. The Delores Wilder

International Kart Federation Region 4B consists of Texas,
Oklahoma, Arkansas and Louisiana. 4B has had the pleasure
of having many great Governors and Coordinators, such as
Ken Trussell and David Hoffer. Mr. Trussell had built up
IKF in the 4B area a few years back and had grown the kart
count where the region had to be split into a northern and
southern area and the northern area had grown to around
300 racers. Things have changed since that time with the
kart count decline like in so many other parts of the country.
The past two years have been a growing process and 2009
finds new racers and a few older racers starting back up.
Kart racing is on an incline in our area and it is like a breath
of fresh air.
Not only new racers but also new tracks are joining the
series for 2009. This year we again have Maxxis as a major
sponsor and have named the series The 2009 Maxxis Dirty
Dozen. Meaning 12 races through out the year, with the first
two races being in March at Gulf Coast Speedway, Alvin, TX,
3rd and 4th race at Kam Raceway, Rhome TX, 5th and 6th

the powers that be decided to run a two-day race at each
track to cut back on the expense to the racer. It went over
very well so that idea was carried over this year.
Region 4B has seen many great racers in it’s time like A.J.
Foyt IV, Scott Festavan, Tuffy Hudson and David Snyder all
which are considered expert drivers and have won countless
Nationals. With the many racers in our area it is very possible
that we could see even more from the 4B region winning the
coveted Duffy award. So keep an eye on racers like Chase Roberts, Greg Snyder, Trey and Taylor Paroline, Ryan Harris, Ryan
Luza, Zack Harville, Justin Blankenship, Chase Lambright,
Kyle Towns
and many
more.

Newton Kart Klub
Host of the 2009
2-Cycle Speedway
Grand Nationals
ewton Kart Klub is excited and honored to host
the “2009 IKF 2 Cycle Speedway Grand Nationals”
on August 4th – 7th. It will be the 9th IKF Grand
National event NKK has hosted in its 35 year existence, the
last one being in 2001. The format will be slightly different
this year with the intent of lowering some of the costs to the
racer. Pit pass prices have been lowered to $10 for the entire
season as well as the Grand Nationals. Spectator Hill will
be free. The event has been shortened from 4 competition
days to 3 days. NKK will have 2 complete IKF Punch Races
Sunday, August 2nd (IKF has agreed to lower the punch
requirement to 2 for those outside the 200 mile radius). This
will save the waiver fee for those traveling from outside the
200 mile radius. The week will kick off on Sunday with 2
IKF Punch Races (12 PM and 6 PM start times.) Monday
is an off day, Tuesday registration & practice, Wednesday
thru Friday will be competition days. Saturday is the rain
date if needed.
A lot of improvements have been made at NKK since our
last Grand Nationals in 2001. A wider racing surface and
additional banking making it a 2 groove track, elevated
flag stand and scoring building, additional Musco lighting
(both on the track and pit area,) improved PA system, new
and larger sign-in and tech buildings (both air conditioned),
pedestrian bridge across the creek and a larger pit area.
The Peterson family has invested a lot of money and time
making this one of the finest tracks in the U.S.A.
One of the most exciting changes this year is Josh Peterson taking over as Race Director and overseeing day to day
operations. Josh is the 30 year old grandson of Ed Peterson.
Ed (along with his wife Dixie) founded the NKK in 1974.
Ed passed away in 2005. Dixie (35 years later) is still very
involved. Growing up and working at the track has instilled
Ed’s values and work ethics in Josh. Please take the time to
introduce yourself and talk to him the next time you come
to NKK. You’ll quickly find out he has the best interest of
the karter and the sport in mind.
Some other things happening close by Newton that week
include: Nationwide NASCAR Race at Newton Speedway
(5 miles from the track) Sat. August 1st, Knoxville Sprint
Car Hall of Fame (25 minutes in Knoxville) and Adventure
land Amusement Park in Des Moines (25 minutes away).
Please come join us for the IKF Grand Nationals this year
– you’ll find our facility to be very family oriented.

The 4-Cycle Sprint & Shifter Grand Nationals are to be
held at Shasta Kart Klub in Redding, California on June
23-26.
I visited SKK during race #1 of the Region 11 Championship Series. I have made yearly visits to SKK, which has
always been one of my favorite facilities, but the transformation that has taken place for the upcoming Grand’s is
really special.
One of the improvements is a picnic and grandstand area
located in a stand of majestic oak trees that provides a shaded
panoramic view of the entire race course from a central loca-
20
tion. New picnic tables have also been placed by the front
stretch viewing area. It was quite evident that many hours
of hard work has been put in by volunteers. Dan Pellizzari,
SKK’s President, told me “there is still more to come”.
The Shasta Kart Klub is a 7/10 mile sprint track with
a 700’+ straight away and a surface infamous for adhering rubber and grip that lends itself to plenty of side by
side action. Additionally the facility also gives host to a
Drag Strip that supplies plenty of pit area and additional
parking needed for the national IKF event. The track itself
is known for providing close racing for any type of race

kart. The combination of chassis setup, strong horsepower,
and technical driving of the track will test the competitors
on all fronts in awarding the Prestigious IKF Duffy.
SKK is located on the eastern side of the Redding Airport
just 5 miles from downtown Redding with ample hotels,
shopping and restaurants. Red Lion of Redding has a
special racer rate of $79.00 for this event.
Dan and the SKK crew have a truly exciting week
planned. Practice is available starting June 20th with official practice on June 23rd. Four action packed racing days
follow. A wine tasting trip has been planned for the 23rd at

3 different vineyards and includes an outdoor brunch for
all ages. The local Indoor Kart Racing facility has extended
an invitation for a low cost evening racing adventure.
There is almost an unlimited amount of paved pit space
available with pre-set tents if you desire. There is plenty
of RV parking on site with daily fresh water and pumping
services offered.
I am looking forward to my Grand National week in
Redding and I hope to see many of you too! More information can be obtained by calling 530-604-4057 or www.

ANIMAL SHOWDOWN
By Bill Hilger
Wavelink Raceway Park in Waverly, Nebraska was host to
the Briggs Animal Showdown held in late August of 2008.
Wavelink Raceway Park has played a major role in
developing drivers that have won many IKF Regional and
National Championships for many years. The track is a
1/8 mile banked dirt oval that has been in existence since
the late 70's.
Bill Hilger approached Mike and Adina Stephens, track
owners, about hosting the Briggs Animal Showdown to
help promote the Briggs Animal Engine. The idea put
forward was that Bill Hilger would secure the sponsorship
for all the classes, help promote the race and Wavelink
would do what they do best, put on a great show.
Each class paid $500.00 based on 20 karts to win with
$300, $200, $100, and $75 for second through fifth place.
Payouts started at three entries and increased per entry so
everyone knew the guaranteed purse before arriving.

KARTER NEWS - MAY 2009
SPEEDWAY RACING SET
TO BEGIN IN MIDWEST
T
he weather is starting to turn from winter to spring
and many speedway racers are getting their chassis
and engines ready for the upcoming season.
As the Speedway Coordinator, I set out to get many different articles this month on Speedway Racing by making
many phone calls to various individuals to send in their
stories and I hope you enjoy tham.
Speedway Racing is very unique as there are not two
tracks alike nor is any track the same from week to week.
The dirt, (black, clay, gumbo or combination) all require
different preparation. Banking, distance, tight corners,
sweeping corners, shade, sunlight, daytime, night time all
require different chassis and tire setups to be successful.
Most drivers are constantly changing each race to find that
perfect setup as the day moves on.
In track preparation there are tracks that do very little
prep work to the track and there are others that prep their
track all week long getting ready. Many different chemicals
are put on the track to keep dust down and help with traction. The most common chemical used is Calcium Chloride.
Smoothness is also a very important factor for racers.
Racers attending Grand Nationals, Series or big money
races want a track that is hard, fast and smooth, almost
to the point it looks like asphalt. Tracks like this usually
provide good tire adhesion with great racing, two and
sometimes three grooves. Tracks that are very well prepared have been known to have less accidents then tracks
that are dusty and one groove.
Those of you who were at the 4-Cycle Speedway Grand
Nationals in Huron, South Dakota last year witnessed
one of the best prepared tracks ever. The track preparation by Calvin and Donnie was second to none and they
worked very hard and many long hours to achieve such a
great consistent racing surface all week. Many of us today
remember that the new standard in track preparation was
set by Tony Nessa at Nessa Speedway in Webster City. I
know that he would start watering and packing the track
on Monday night and continue each night right up until
raceday. His racing surface was always top notch. You
probably did not know that Calvin, who prepped the track
at Huron, got much of his information from watching and
asking Tony Nessa questions over the years.
Today we are seeing more and more tracks work very
hard at achieving great racing surfaces. New tracks today
are built with all the amenities that racers want and desire.
Racers have many options of where they can race and will
travel far if a facility is built to high standards with a great
racing surface.
Not all tracks have the resources or funds to prepare
racing surfaces like this week in and week out. Many
local tracks have survived many years running the same
KARTER NEWS - MAY 2009
program. There are many tracks that have been able to
keep their local racers at their home track all season. The
majority of these racers do not want to race the bigger
series or money races. They have good competition and
fun just staying close to home.
Bottom line here is that we need both. If it were not
for the local tracks many of the large facilities and series
would not exist. These local tracks have produced many
local, regional and national championship drivers. It gives
the entry level driver a chance to hone his skills before
hitting the more challenging series.
On the other side many local tracks do not want the
high dollar racer to race at their track weekly because it
makes it difficult for the average racer who is on a budget
to compete.
Sometimes these high dollar racers discourage new
drivers because when they come to the track for the first or
second time and see what they may need to spend on equipment and tires to race, they quit and never come back.
I always remember what a few individuals said at one
time. If you do not go out and help those racers get fast,
you will not have anyone to race against nor will you have
a track to race at. You want to race them at their best.
OK now it is time to check the wheel bearings on the trailer,
change oil in the generator, and clean out the air conditioning coil because the first race day is rapidly approaching
and if the trailer can not get there with the equipment, you
sat in your easy chair a little too long this winter.

AS GOOD AS
GOLD

F
riday April 3 we leave Portland, OR early and arrive at
Horn Rapids Race Track around 2:00pm. First thing to
do is locate the fellow World Formula racing group and
claim our pits. Second we go to the registration booth to
get signed up and start counting the World Formula Class. Looks
like about 14 so far, now I’m thinking to myself that this could
be a great racing weekend. Next I check the JR World Formula,
only a couple so far today, but that will hopefully grow larger by
the season end.
We came not planning to practice on Friday, but since the
weather was so nice we decided to pay to practice during the
last session of the day. This was a
good idea since I gave last years
Arrow kart to my son and my
kart was a used Alpha Mondial
Package that I picked up so I
would have something to run this
season. Having never turned a lap
in the kart, I could use the setup
time on the track.
We had a lot to try out with
an unknown used kart and used
engine on very old used tires. With no gauge or timer on the
kart, we had to find someone to gauge our speed against. Well
you can’t ask for a better person to follow than fellow racer, multi
IKF Grand National Champion Bryan Green. Luckily I was able
to keep pace with him, but the kart had a killer push everywhere
and was bogging down entering Turn 2. The kart’s brakes were
not what I was used to and I kept locking them up in most of the
braking turns. I was feeling pretty good that I was able to keep
at Bryan’s Pace, so I figured I wouldn’t embarrass myself to bad
this weekend. What we didn’t know was that Bryan was having
his problems and was about a second a lap off for the day. This
sort of burst our bubble and it was obvious we were going to
really have to work tonight and in the morning to pickup the
racing pace.
The first thing we found out was that the kart was 58 pounds
lighter than the required 390 pounds for the heavy class. Another
burst bubble. Fortunately, as a junior racer dad with lots of lead
weights, we had all but 10 pounds of the weight needed and we
felt with fuel it was going to be very close for race day.
Now it was time to look at the bogging problem. The engine felt
strong most of the time and that turned out to be fairly simple to fix
by adding a fuel return line from the carb and a vented fuel cap.
Next was to fix the push which
turned out to be more than one
thing. First thing was to widen
the rear track another inch to the
maximum width. Then measure
the front end castor, camber and
toe to discover that there was about
25mm of toe in. Now we knew
why the kart would not trip the
rev limiter on the straights. Before
we could start to adjust the front
end, we had to find eccentric pills for the king pin bolts. With
no Alpha kart dealer at the track, we started hunting and found
that the Ital kart eccentric washers were the same. We added
the parts, adjusted the front end with the Sniper alignment tool.
Crossed our fingers and decided it was time to call it a day.
Saturday morning engine break in went well, the bog was gone
and the engine felt strong off all of the turns. We still had the
push and I locked the brakes up again in the turn 1. After mentally noting to myself “Not so much brakes in Turn 1”, practice
went well and I could see that most of the changes had helped.
We still had the push, but not nearly as bad as the day before.
“IKF Region 6 Gold Sprint
Series Race No.2 is in
the books, and from my
perspective... it was a
very successful event.”

KARTER NEWS - MAY 2009
I just couldn’t get trough Turn 4 like we knew we needed to be
fast. We checked the front end again then we realized that the
kart could only get 42 inched wide on the front track, which is
not nearly as wide as I am used to running. Searching in the
trailer I found some offset spindle mount wheels with a different
offset and was able to get the front wider. The practice before the
drivers meeting was much better, but the kart still had a very
small push. This was when I realized that the front tires were 3
years old and a new pair of front tires should fix it. I was feeling
pretty good on the second practice until one of the Lawrence
brothers flew by me on the front straight. This started me wondering what was going on.
At this time we were out of time and options, so new front tires
and widening the front end another spacer is the best we could do
with the chassis for the day. If we can get close with the chassis we
can then begin to tune the motor, gear and clutch later.
Qualifying 7th with 19 World Formula karts, I felt we did real
well with an untested kart within a half a second of the pole time.
It didn’t seem like anyone was really running away or gaining
KARTER NEWS - MAY 2009
on me, so I hoped for the best with this large field of World Formulas on the track.
The great thing about 4 Cycle racing in the Northwest is that
Qualifying counts as a heat and we invert the whole field from
qualifying for the first heat. So starting in 12th for the heat I had
my work cut out for me. The heat race started real clean and
everyone got thru Turn 1 with no issues and I was able get gain
5 positions to 6th place by the end of the first lap. An incident on
next lap caused a one kart to spinout and put another kart on its
side. I was able to move into 5th place and coming up to Scott
Barley on lap 4, I tried to out brake him in the downhill section
before Turn 2. I was going too fast and was unable to hold the
kart putting it into a sideways spin. Scott used his head and gave
me lots of room, then used his momentum jump ahead of me. To
add to my problems, my spin allowed three more karts to pass
me and I went from 4th to 8th. The rest of the race was uneventful, but I was able to pass one kart and ended up in 7th place.
Another great thing about the World Formula group in the Northwest is that everyone helps each other when they need help.
An example of this was before the main race when we helping
Dana MacDonald on his kart when Bryan Green noticed a bolt
was loose on the top side plate cover of my engine. Experience
with these engines told us this meant one thing “broken side
cover bolts”. We quickly pulled the motor, clutch and chain
guard. Replaced the broken bolt and then discovered another
bolt was missing out of the lower front. We replaced the bolt and
put everything back together so we could race with the rest of
the group.
I struggled about dropping a tooth on the rear sprocket, but in
the end figured I could hold off almost everybody. I would be 7th
on the grid and I wanted to get a good jump on the rear of the
field. Plus working on Dana’s motor was more important than
making these changes.
When the main started I was in 7th grid position and got great
start that put me into 6th place and ran fairly well staying in that
position until Lawrence and Miller tangled on Lap 2 at Turn 2.
With Lawrence dropping out, I was in 5th place until Brian
Marsteller makes great inside pass on me in Turn 4 on Lap 3. On
Lap 5, Dana’s son, Elliot McDonald and Joey Miller made contact
in Turn 1 which dropped Joey out of the race. On Lap 7, I was able
to out brake Bryan Green going into Turn 7 and then had to follow
Brian Marsteller and Scott Barlee for the remainder of the race
because I just could not catch them. After the race, I was told that
Haywood, Moon, and Calhoun, where hot on my tail in the closing
laps of the race. At the scales Elliot McDonald was penalized for
the contact with Joey Miller during the race and I was moved up
another place. This gave me a 4th place finish for the day.
So after a successful day of racing, I was pretty happy with
the performance of my older Alpha kart and it will make a great
package for a new or experience racer. My race weekend would
not have turned out so well without the trackside support of
CMC, Kart-O-Rama, BAM Racing, Italian Motors and vendors
who attend the races with the parts on hand at the race track to
help keep the racers running.
After the races there was a great barbeque hosted by Tri-Cities
Kart Club with awesome pulled pork and chicken sandwiches,
beans, slaw, and beverages. This was a great weekend of racing
and gets me pumped up for the next NW Gold Cup Sprint Race
at Boise, Idaho on May 22-24, 2009.

ince suffering a stroke at 17, Brandon "B.J."
Childs is different in a lot of ways.
He can put together combinations of just
three or four words at a time, said his mother,
Cary Childs. He often struggles to end sentences, though he knows what he wants to
say. When he's stuck, he'll shrug to family
members. That's their cue to help him finish the thought.
Reading is harder. And he walks with a limp and wears a
brace on his right leg.B.J., now 21, has had to relearn how to
do everything. Recently, on the go-cart race track, though,
Cary Childs saw a familiar sight, one she had thought would
live only in her memories: B.J. behind the wheel, victorious
after a race.
To Cary Childs, it's a miracle her son is still alive much less
speeding around the oval track. Immediately after the stroke,
his chances of survival were slim, especially when he had to
undergo a risky brain surgery.
She still is reluctant to talk about the day in March 2004
when she found B.J. on the shower floor, awake but unresponsive. He had been getting ready to go to work at No
Frills Supermarket. His mother thought he'd been in the
shower too long and went to check on him. The stroke
killed a large portion of his brain, his mother said. On the
third day at Jennie Edmundson Hospital in Council Bluffs,
B.J.'s brain started to swell. Barry and Cary Childs were
given 10 minutes to give consent for part of their son's skull
to be removed. Without the surgery, he would have died
that night.
The following days, weeks and months were taken hour by
hour. Doctors weren't sure what caused the stroke. Possibly a
past neck injury might have affected the carotid artery, they
said, but no one remembers any such injury. B.J. wrestled,
played football and ran track at Treynor (Iowa) High School.
He had never had a serious crash while racing. B.J. had to
start over. He spent several years rebuilding his strength and
agility. For a while, he had to wear a helmet until the piece of
his skull that was removed was replaced with acrylic.
Go-Karts have always been a big part of the family's life,
30
(reprinted with permission)
and B.J. had raced from when he was 8 up until the stroke.
Nearly everyone else in the family, including B.J.'s mother,
also has raced at one time or another.
B.J.'s grandfather Jerry Bowsman, 75, owned the former
Quick Service Lawn Mower on Leavenworth Street in Omaha
and now runs a shop out of his home just east of the Bluffs.
In 1957, Bowsman started building go-karts and racing them.
He quit racing 11 years ago. B.J. and brother Cameron, 16,
have a good-natured competition over who has won more
go-kart races. This spring, B.J. started helping at Cameron's
races and soon was feeling the urge "to get in and drive." His
neurologist gave him the go-ahead.
Bowsman rigged a go-cart so that B.J. could operate the gas
pedal with the steering wheel. B.J. has limited movement on
his right side. "He hasn't lost his ability. His reaction time and
depth of perception are still intact," Cary Childs said. "It's
amazing. He got out there and proved he could drive."
B.J. wasn't satisfied with just driving. He wanted to race. To
his mother's surprise, doctors said he could. "Their theory is
to let him try everything," she said. "To let him try and have
a life. This is certainly not the norm for a stroke patient."
The other racers at Wavelink Raceway Park in Waverly,
Neb., welcomed B.J. back. One asked, "What took you so
long?" He got into his tiny black go-cart and won. On three
straight weekends. "Nobody backed off. He won legitimately,"
Cary Childs said. "Watching him out there, it was like this
never happened. He was making the moves he made before;
you couldn't even tell."
The years since B.J.'s stroke haven't been easy for his
family. His father died two years ago from a heart attack.
Cary Childs said she finds inspiration in her son. "I think he
is feeling like he belongs again," Cary said. "Plus he really
wants people to see that when something like that happens
to someone, you don't give up. B.J. has not given up. He
keeps working every day."
(Inset photo at right) Because of limited mobility on his right side from the stroke, it is a
team effort to get B.J. in and out of his kart. His mom, Cary Childs, and grandfather, Jerry
Bowsman help. B.J. resumed kart racing again this year. Says his mother, "He hasn't lost
his ability. His reaction time and depth perception are still intact. It's amazing."

BRIGGS & STRATTON RACING UNVEILS A NEW
CRATE ENGINE AND TRACK PROGRAM FOR 2009
The New Local Option 206 engine from
Briggs & Stratton is a crate engine designed
to help control the cost of racing, simplify
the tech process, and provide a level playing field for competitors.
Built from the proven Animal platform,
this engine features a ground cam, factory
controlled piston pop-up, a sealed lower
unit, an onboard rewind starter and a PVL
ignition system limited to 6,100 rpm.
“The LO 206 allows a racer an out-of-thebox racing class structure with an engine
that can grow as a racer does,” stated Dave
Klaus- Briggs & Stratton.
“We looked at the state of the economy,
our sport, and other engine packages to
develop a cost-effective racing platform
which led to the LO 206 engine being born.
A hand-built racing engine with consistency from start to finish that simplifies the
process to get out on the track. An engine
that a racer can take with them to the next
level by simply swapping out the ignition
module and head gasket.”
In addition to the release of the L0 206
crate engine, Briggs & Stratton Racing has
gone a step further to support the tracks
and racers who campaign this engine package in 2009. “We also wanted to show a
commitment to the local level of our sport
by creating a promotional program valued
at over $300 to be used as awards to participating racers.” Sanctioned tracks will
need to submit five (5) LO 206 engine UPC
codes to be eligible.
Complete rules and engine details can be

11 DRIVERS EMERGE FROM RSWC TALENT
SHOOTOUT. LATEST DRIVERS TO JOIN THE
PRESTIGIOUS DRIVER DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM
ARE SET TO COMPETE IN VARIETY OF RACE
SERIES IN 2009
SACRAMENTO, CALIF. (March 27, 2009)
– The renowned national talent search for the
driver development program conducted by
Ron Sutton's Winner's Circle has now concluded, as 11 new drivers have been selected
to take part in the prestigious program in
2009. With support from Lucas Oil, K & N Filters and Sunoco Race Fuels, this year’s winners include Nick Beard, Jessica Clark, Trevor
Christiani, Marten Hansen, Alex Jacobsen,
Joey Licata, Kyle Longmore, Mindy McCord,
Bobby Runyan, Keegan Walmer and Brandon
White. These talented young competitors will
race in variety of series this coming season,
following strong performances in the annual
driver shootout.
The Ron Sutton’s Winner’s Circle Shootout is designed to identify talented, young
up-and-coming drivers from across the
United States and Canada with the potential and commitment to achieve a driving
career in NASCAR. Following an application process in which over 751 hopefuls
submitted their racing resumes, 130 drivers
and families were interviewed, prior to 44
racers being selected to take part in the ‘08
Shootout. Conducted over two three-day
weekends in early November, in identical
race cars on an asphalt oval track in Northern California, 11 drivers were selected to
join existing RSWC drivers in the driver
development program this season.
A native of Midland, Texas, Nick Beard
joins the RSWC following a championshipwinning career in the karting ranks. The 18
year-old captured the Southwest Roadracing Association 125cc Shifter and Formula
Shifter titles last year, having previous won
the 80cc Shifter championship in 2007, and
the 2005 Road Race Grand National Championship in the 80cc Shifter class. In his first
season of car racing, Beard will get behind
the wheel of a USAC Ford Focus Midget.
One of two female drivers entering the
Ron Sutton’s Winner’s Circle program in
2009, Jessica Clark already has a good deal
of racing experience success on her resume
despite her young age. The 15 year-old
from Westlake Village, Calif., found initial
success in karting, before making the move
to Jr. Midgets, where she quickly made her
way to victory lane. After earning four main
event wins in 2008. Clark will race a USAC
Ford Focus Midget in 2009.
Trevor Christiani, of Ukiah, Calif., becomes
part of the RSWC driver program following
a successful past couple of years behind the
wheel. After becoming the youngest driver to
win an Open 500 Championship win at age
11, the now 14 year-old won a Modified Trophy Dash and finished among the top-five
in his inaugural Super late Model race. This
coming season, Christiani will pilot a Grand
American Modified.
Born and raised in Sweden, Marten Hansen enters the RSWC program after recently
moving to the USA to advance his racing
career. Over the course of the last five years,
the 20 year-old has raced both open-wheel
and closed wheel cars with good success,
winning the SSK/Renault Junior Cup in 2006
and the STCC/Camaro Cup Junior Championship in 2008. In his first season of North
American competition, Hansen will race a
NASCAR Grand American Modified.
A resident of San Jose, Calif., Alex Jacobsen
enters the Ron Sutton’s Winner’s Circle program and his first season of car competition
A total of 11 up-and-coming drivers were selected via the
annual shootout to be part of the Ron Sutton Sutton’s Winner’s Circle program in 2009. (Photo: Craig Evans)
after finding success in the karting ranks. The
highlight for the 14 year-old was winning the
Dixon/Davis/Prairie City Crossover Championship and the Dixon class championship
in only his second season of competition.
Jacobsen will pilot a USAC Junior Ford Focus
Midget on dirt in 2009.
17 year-old Joey Licata joins the Ron Sutton’s Winner’s Circle program following an
accomplished career in karting and a recent
move to spec truck racing. The Los Angeles, Calif., driver won a total of 17 karting
championships since first getting behind
the wheel, most recently capturing four
IKF Grand National titles in 2008. Licata
contested his first season ASA Speed Truck
competition last year and will get behind
the wheel of a NASCAR Grand American
Modified this season.
Kyle Longmore, of Camarillo, Calif.,
enters his first season of the RSWC following a stellar karting career and recent success behind the wheel of a racing truck.
The now 18 year-old won an impressive
14 national championships and four Grand
National Championships in IKF competition
before making the move to cars, where he
35
promptly won races in Skip Barber competition. Longmore will race both a NASCAR
Grand American Modified and a NASCAR
Late Model in 2009, after making his West
Coast Pro Trucks debut last year.
A native of Billings, Mon., Mindy
McCord is the second female driver selected
to the RSWC via the shootout. The 15 yearold joins the program, after winning two
Quarter Midget championship titles in the
Western USA. This coming season, McCord
will pilot a USAC Ford Focus Midget.
Like many of the Ron Sutton’s Winner’s
Circle drivers, 16 year-old Bobby Runyan
joins the program following a multiple years
of racing in the karting ranks. The Denair,
Calif., driver enters his first-season of car
competition having won two IKF championship titles. In 2009, Runyan will race a Formula Ford in SCCA Regional competition.
A resident of Portland, Ore., Keegan
Walmer enters the 2009 RSWC program having already achieved a great deal behind the
wheel. The 14 year-old won nine regional
Quarter Midget titles before most recently
capturing a Winternational title. Walmer will
race a USAC Ford Focus Midget in 2009.
At just 13 years of age, Brandon White
joins the Ron Sutton’s Winner’s Circle program after achieving success in the dirt karting ranks. The resident of Eureka, Calif., has
scored numerous wins over the past three
years in Southern Oregon Outlaw and Red
Bluff Outlaw series competition, most recently finishing second in his rookie 250 class
campaign. In 2009, White will drive a USAC
Junior Ford Focus Midget on pavement.

RUNYAN WINS TWO STRAIGHT RACES IN
FORMULA FORD. RON SUTTON’S WINNER’S
CIRCLE DRIVER VISITS VICTORY LANE IN FIRSTEVER CAR RACES AT THUNDERHILL RACEWAY
AND INFINEON RACEWAY
DENAIR, CALIF. (April 2, 2009) – Ron
Sutton’s Winner’s Circle development driver
Bobby Runyan has started his inaugural car
racing campaign off in perfect fashion, winning the opening two Formula Ford races in
the San Francisco Region SCCA. Indicating
why many are already keeping an eye on
the 16 year-old Californian. Runyan scored
a dominant victory at Thunderhill Raceway
on March 15th, followed by a superb come
from behind victory on March 29th at Infineon Raceway.

Bobby Runyan led flag-to-flag in his SCCA Club Racing
Regional Formula Ford debut
As part of the San Francisco Region
SCCA “Gathering of Champions” Double
National/Regional event, former IKF competitor, Runyan made his car racing debut
behind the wheel of a Porter Racing/Raging Bull Motorsports Swift DB6 Formula
Ford. Despite having only first driven the
car two weeks prior via private testing, the
Denair, Calif., resident immediately was
up to speed. Runyan solidified his position
as the driver to beat in qualifying, turning
a fast lap of 1:51.644, which not only gave
him the pole position for the Sunday afternoon Regional race, but also would have
placed the former karting standout P1 on
the grid in the National race.
When the race action got underway,
Runyan quickly established a multi-car
advantage on his closest pursuer. Running
fast consistent laps throughout the 16-lap
affair, the talented young driver never came
under any challenge of note. Runyan, leading from the green flag onwards, captured
the win in his first-ever SCCA Club Racing
Formula Ford race, setting the fastest lap
(1:51.938) in the process.
“I think Bobby did a great job this
weekend,” stated Team Owner Neil Porter.
“He ran times which were very good for
someone who has only been on the track
two times and only driven the car twice.
His qualifying times were good enough to
take the pole for the National on Sunday.
His next race at Infineon Raceway will be a
good test of his racing skills and his ability
to learn a new track.”
Two weeks later, Runyan was back
behind the wheel of his Porter Racing/Raging Bull Motorsports entry as part of the
“Season-Opener” Regional event. The talented young driver quickly came to grips
with the undulating road course in Northern California during testing, posting times
on pace with the pole position mark from
last year. Unfortunately come qualifying,
the team just missed the ideal setup, resulting in a ‘loose’ car. Despite the condition
and a spin due to an incident with a Formula Vee, the Californian managed to post
the third fastest lap in the session.
Runyan, returning to the cockpit of his
Swift DB6 after a short break, did not get the
start he desired when the green flag waved
for the Sunday afternoon race. Missing a shift,
he was shuffled back to fifth place before turn
one. The teenager however immediately refocused, regaining third place by the midway
point of the opening lap. Continuing his
charge to the front of the field, Runyan found
a way past his teammate, taking over second
place before the end of lap.
The Ron Sutton’s Winner’s Circle driver,
with the leader in sight and his teammate
right behind, continued to attack the 2.52mile road course, soon getting within striking distance for the lead. Utilizing a daring
out-braking maneuver in turn 11, Runyan
took over the P1 spot. While lapped traffic allowed his Porter Racing teammate to
repeatedly challenge for the win, Runyan
held off the challenges, turning the fastest lap of the race (1:40.706) en route to a
six-second win. With the victory, Runyan
remains undefeated in his young car racing career.
“Bobby Runyan has amazing talent,”
commented Ron Sutton. “How rare is it
for a young race driver to win his first
two car races back-to-back? Simply amazing!” Runyan continues his 2009 Formula
Ford race season on April 26th, at the
famed Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca outside of Monterey, Calif. For direct contact,
