Each year Suntory Hall commissions an orchestral work
from a leading composer with its world premiere taking
place during Summer Festival. The suggestion of the
late Toru Takemitsu, the series was launched in 1986, the
year the hall itself opened. In 2015, the third year under
the direction of Toshio Hosokawa, we are pleased to
welcome the Swiss composer Heinz Holliger.
A noted oboist and
conductor, Holliger
will conduct the Tokyo

“Summer Festival” at Suntory Hall has introduced the music of the 20th century and
beyond, and the music at the forefront since 1987. In 2013 it showed a different facet
with a newly launched project “The Producer’s Series” that presents the producer’s
picks spanning from the contemporary “classics” to various challenging performances
beyond the boundary of music. This festival was one of the major projects presented
for years by the Suntory Music Foundation, predecessor of the Suntory Foundation for
Arts, and will hence explore and apprise creative frontiers of music. Shin-ichiro Ikebe
inaugurated this series in 2013, followed by Toshiro Kido in 2014.

This program is to commemorate the aspirations of the late
Keizo Saji, the founding president of Suntory Hall, who strongly
believed that the love of classical music should be fostered in
younger generations. Suntory Hall selects the most appropriate
concert programs for elementary and middle
school students from matinee concerts held
at the Main Hall on weekends and national
holidays for three pairs of children and
parents/caretakers invited to each concert.
Forging a partnership with Carnegie Hall for educational programs
In September 2006, Suntory Hall forged a partnership with
Carnegie Hall to play an active role in the education of music.
Through its connection to Carnegie Hall, Suntory Hall can
advance Carnegie Hall's music education program. Over 115,000
people per year take part in events such as "Carnegie Kids" and the
Professional Training Workshop (PTW).
With the aim of spreading appreciation and love for classical music, Suntory
Hall and Carnegie Hall in New York have forged a partnership with educational
program exchanges as its main pillar. Through continued mutual effort, the two
halls will strive to further develop musical culture around the world.
