Watering is important, but wait until the soil is dry before
doing so; otherwise this could lead to root rot. Keep pouring
until it drains out the bottom of the pot, but avoid hitting the
flowers or leaves directly.
Most plants need some kind of fertilizer enhancement to
ensure best growth. Ask your garden retailer which kind is
best. Make sure to not touch the flowers, leaves or stems
when fertilizing, as they can be burned by the fertilizer.
'Surfinia Summer Double Pink'
Basic
planting and care
Cut any dead flowers from the plant immediately using
scissors. This makes sure all energy is focused on new
blooms and helps prevent disease and fungus. Be careful to
remove the entire flower and not just the petals, or there will
be fewer flowers later.
For a strong flush of blooms in the future, cut the plants back
boldly. Cut leaves and stems along the pot and leave about 6
inches of growth from the soil line.
Most plants are best kept outdoors where they can get the
most direct sunlight. A 10-inch pot will be the ideal size for
most Suntory plants, filled with well-drained soil and a slowrelease fertilizer. Ask your garden retailer which brand of
fertilizer to use.
If you’re using a pot, you’ll want to keep 1 to 1.5 inches of
space between the top of the soil and the rim of the pot. This
makes it easier to regulate water levels.
To increase the number of shoots that grow, trim the parts
overflowing from the pot with scissors. This will allow new
shoots to grow from the side and multiply the number of
branches and flowers. This process can be repeated two to
three times.

Q: How should I care for my plants
in the summer?
A: Water in the morning. If you wait
until later, temperatures will climb
and watering can cause root rot. If
temperatures climb past 87°F, water
the floor around pots to help lower
the temperature. Plant stands also
help avoid direct heat from
the ground.
plants don't receive rain, water
the surface of the leaves to wash
anything off.
Q: How do I protect against disease
and insects?
A: Remove dead flowers and leaves
to keep plants clean. Put pots on
racks to keep insects from invading
the soil and improve airflow. If
Q: What do I do if plants are
growing slow or not flowering?
A: Move the plant into stronger
light and make sure you’re not
overwatering.
Q: What do I do if I find disease
or insects?
A: Cut off the affected portions of
the plant immediately, especially if
you find insect eggs. Be sure to
wear gloves.
Answers to common
Q&A:
questions
Q: What should I do about
watering while I’m away?
A: Water plants daily in the
summer, but only every two to three
days in winter. Try putting pots in
a shallow tray filled with water and
move them into the shade. You can
also ask your garden retailer about
automated watering kits.
Q: What do I do in heavy
rain periods?
A: Increase airflow to ward off mold
and other diseases. Cut plants back
to avoid damping or steaming in
hot, humid conditions.
6
Q: What do I do if leaves are
turning yellow?
A: This could be a sign of
overwatering, or that plants are
getting too much or not enough
fertilizer.
Q: How should I care for my
plants in the winter?
A: Leave plants in the sun, but
be sure to protect them from
frost. Reduce watering and stop
fertilizing completely. Move your
plants into larger pots in spring.
This gives them more room to
grow. Add a base fertilizer.

Suntory breeders
bring
to
beauty life
A
s the world leader in the food,
beverage and hospitality
industries, Suntory enjoys
sharing its zest for life. Based in
Osaka, Japan, Suntory is best known
for introducing whiskey to Japan and
has built a reputation for introducing
the finer things in life. As a result,
Suntory’s breeders have created “topshelf” varieties by putting customer
satisfaction and enjoyment first.
The biotech boom in the 1980s led
Suntory’s breeders to take an interest
in flowers. Before, they were focused
on ingredients for whiskey, wine, beer
and nonalcoholic beverages. Suntory
approached the flower business
with a fresh perspective without any
preconceived ideas or traditions in the
10
horticultural trade.
Embracing their corporate
motto, “Yatteminahare!” (Go for
it!), Suntory’s breeders left their
laboratories in Japan and ventured to
find the most promising plants. They
scaled rocky cliffs, trudged through
low marshes and jungles — even
risked their lives to find plants with
promising characteristics. While
most flower breeders were selecting
varieties that could produce seed,
Suntory chose plants for the best
garden performance and impact.
All Suntory varieties are produced
vegetatively from cuttings.
The first big introduction was
Surfinia — the first vigorous,
vegetative petunia, which reinvented
the category. Next came Million Bells
calibrachoa — a completely new
genus with a wide color range and
high flower count. Soon to follow were
beautiful vegetative verbenas — Tapien
and Temari — creating a whole new
category, and then Summer Wave
torenias. Exciting recent introductions
are Sun Parasol mandevillas and
Senetti pericallis. Each year, Suntory’s
breeders evaluate thousands and
thousands of hybrids in the search for
something truly special and new.
Beauty, performance and
innovation are what you’ll find in
Suntory’s breeding. The breeders, who
are the artists and scientists behind it
all, get the most satisfaction when you
enjoy their creations.

Baby Senetti®
Compact plants

smaller flowers.
Same conditions

Kick off spring with Senetti pericallis! These plants
are cool. In addition to thriving in lower temperatures
down to 35°F, Senetti provides high-impact color when
you need it the most. In vivid blues, magic magentas,
ultraviolets and stunning bicolors, Senetti is unique for
its vibrant color early in the season. Plant Senetti in
early spring with other cool companion bedding plants,
such as pansies, primulas, violas, osteospermums and
nemesias.
The best season to grow Senetti is early spring
through early summer. In climates where frost does not
occur, it will safely grow through the winter months
outside. Plants thrive in full sun to partial shade.
After blooming has finished, you can cut back the
old blooms by removing 50 percent of the height of the
plant and then repot into a larger container or into the
landscape. Reblooming will start again in three to four
weeks, provided temperatures during the day and night
are kept as cool as possible. High summer temperatures
(85-90°F) will stop the reblooming. Make Senetti part of
your early spring tradition!
