Transflo Scanning cont’d
The Trip Sheet must ALWAYS be the first documents scanned
DO NOT COVER OR MARK ON BAR CODE
Print Clearly
Use extra 8 ½ X 11 pages as necessary to tape receipts
Scan your documents as soon as possible after delivery
Scan all pages of the bill of lading. If it says 1 of 8, scan all eight pages
Make sure the load number is on every bill of lading. Also, make sure
your name, truck number, and trailer number are on at least one page of
the bill of lading
• Make sure you get your bill of lading signed. If the consignee provides a
received sticker in lieu of a signature, make sure you scan the sticker
• If you affix a received sticker to the bill of lading, try not to cover any
important information
• We need to be able to read all the information on a document. Please do
not scan an item while it is folded
If you drop a trailer at a consignee after hours make sure to
keep a copy of the bill of lading to turn in.
• When using the mobile app for scanning, look at the preview to ensure
the documents are legible before sending

TRANSFLO Express FAQ’s for Drivers
1. What documents should I scan?
Scan bill of lading (all pages), proof of delivery stickers, scale tickets, any
driver expenses and/or receipts needing reimbursement, all load related
documentation.
Note: logs must be scanned separately, as the bar codes are different.
Do not scan fuel receipts (unless fuel was paid for in some way other
than your fuel card)
2. When and Where should I scan?
As soon after delivering a load as you can. TRANSFLO Express scan
stations are available at over 850 truck stops including Pilot, Flying J and
Love’s and many independent truck stops. To see a complete list visit of
locations visit www.TransfloExpress.com.
3. What do I do with the documents once they are scanned?
Drivers should retain documents for two months. After that time you can
dispose of them.
4. Do I have to pay at the truck stop?
No money will be requested of truck drivers at the truck stop.
5. How do I know what pages were scanned?
Drivers receive a receipt that lists the number of pages scanned with a
unique confirmation number on it. Keep your receipt with the original
paperwork. Use the unique confirmation number to access your documents
online for 14 days at www.TransfloExpress.com.
6. How do I know that the company received my paperwork?
Drivers can view images online for 14 days at www.TransfloExpress.com.
Click at the top link that says, “View Document.” Type in the confirmation
number into the boxes and view the status (Delivered) as well as review
the actual document images.

TRANSFLO Express FAQ’s for Drivers (cont’d)
7. Do documents need to be scanned in any certain order?
Your Trip Sheet should be filled out completely and it must be the top
document. The order of the rest of the documents does not matter as long
as each BOL has a Driver sticker completed on the first page of the BOL.
8. What happens if the scanner breaks down?
The scanners, which are more reliable than fax machines, are maintained
and proactively monitored for quality. If the scanner does need repair,
another scanner will be sent over-night to the truck stop and the service
will be interrupted until the next day at that stop. Drivers usually stop
several times a day and can use the service at the next participating truck
stop they reach.
9. Can TRANSFLO Express scan all sizes of documents?
The documents must be no larger than 8.5” x 14”. Small documents, such
as toll receipts should be taped to a sheet of paper by the driver.

1) Driver Managers will issue EFS Money Code numbers for the lumper.
You may also send in Qualcomm message #45 to request a code.
Your Driver Manager will reply with the code(s). If Driver Manager
does not respond during normal business hours, you may need to
follow up with a call. Please try to plan ahead for late night and
weekend loads to avoid unnecessary calls to After Hours Support.
2) Fill out EFS Check per the example next page. Please make sure
you are using a current EFS or TCH check. If there is a section
asking for an issuer number, DO NOT USE IT!
3) Check with lumper service to see if it is OK for YOU to get the
authorization number.
4) Call EFS Check at 800-405-5601 to get the authorization code.
Write the code in the appropriate blank on check. You do not need
your license, card number, etc. on the check – the money code is
all you need.
5) If you get a money code authorized and then discover you don’t need
to use it, do not throw the check away! Contact Payroll as soon
as possible to let them know what happened. Write VOID on the
check and mail or turn it in to Payroll, so that it can be submitted to
EFS for a refund. Failure to notify Payroll in a timely manner could
result in the EFS check being deducted from your pay as a personal
advance, so please do not delay!

WILL NOT WORK
EFS TransChecks
Drivers – Check Your EFS Checks!
As you probably know, there are several different styles of EFS/TCH
checks out there. Each check corresponds to a different EFS account.
EFS has notified us that as of May 15, 2015, they are converting all of their
accounts to one account. This means that as of that date, only the gray
EFS checks with the red printing will be usable with our EFS account.
(The yellow or tan EFS Transchecks have never worked with
Don Hummer Trucking’s EFS account.)
TCH Checks
If you pick up your EFS checks from the Don Hummer Trucking
corporate or safety offices, you will be guaranteed to get the right
style of checks, because we only have the good checks on hand.
However, if you run out of checks and need to use a check provided
by a truck stop, repair shop, or lumper service, please verify that you
are using a check like the one above. If you try to use any other
style of check, it will not work.
DON HUMMER TRUCKING • • • Page 20
(The blue TCH checks used to work with our EFS account, but as
of May 15th, these checks will no longer be accepted.)
If you have any of the blue TCH checks in your truck, throw them
away or shred them on May 15th. Again, if you picked up your
checks from our offices, you’ve got the right checks; but if you’ve
picked up any checks out on the road, please verify right away that
you only have the gray checks with red printing.
Thank you and stay safe!

Tire Chains
Park in a safe location off the main highway and out of the flow of traffic.
Try to always use a designated chain installation area that is well lit and
located on firm pavement.
Remove the chains from the storage box and lay them on the ground, next to
each of the tires that require chains. Doubles should be installed on the drive
tandems.
Inspect the chains for any broken cross chains or twisted links. Also inspect
the cams for damage – make sure they are not twisted or bent.

Tire Chains cont’d
1. Lift the chains and drape them over the top of the tire. Straighten them so
that they hang down evenly.
1
2
2a. Pull the truck forward about two feet to allow the tire to drive across the
chains to a point where you can attach them.
2b. Fasten the inside hook to the loose chain. Tighten it as much as possible,
pulling any excess slack toward the outside of the tire. Proceed to attach
the outside chain.
3a. Secure the cams with the T-Cam tool.
This is done by turning the cam with the
tool placed in the square opening. The
cam has a groove that is rounded on the
end. The tire chain will fit into this
locking groove.
3b. Attach rubber tarp straps across the tire
chains. Be careful not to attach the hooks
with the sharp edge facing the sidewall
of the tire. Also insure that the hooks are
not secured into any of the links connected
directly to the cross chains.
3c. Pull the truck forward approximately ¼ mile and re-inspect the installation.
Tighten any loose chains and adjust the tarp straps, if necessary.

Washington State Chain Law
There seems to be some confusion on the State of Washington’s chain laws
so let’s clear it up!
• Chains must be carried Nov. 1 through April 1.
• It takes five or seven chains to comply with the requirement.
• All vehicles of more than 10,000 pounds gross vehicle weight must carry
two extra chains in the event that road conditions require the use of more
chains or if chains in use are broken or otherwise useless. Don Hummer
Trucks will require 5-7 chains or cables.
• Chains or cables? Chains must have two sides attached with crosssections. Cables can be permitted. Plastic chains are prohibited.
• Placement: on a dual axle tractor the outside tires on the drive axle(s)
will need to be chained in addition to one tire on either side of either
trailer axle. Tractors equipped with wide-base singles will have to
chain each tire on each drive axle.
http://www.wsdot.wa.gov/commercialvehicle/chain_req.htm
All tires on one drive axle or one tire on each side of both
drive axles. One tire on either side of either trailer axle. This
includes Automobile Transporters.
Tractors equipped with super-single tires:
Chain each tire on each drive axle.

operating on I-70 in either direction between mileposts 133 (Dotsero) and
259 (Morrison) from Sept. 1 to May 31 must carry sufficient chains at all
times to be in compliance with the Colorado chain law. This is the only
area in Colorado in which chains must be carried during the specified
season.
• On a dual axle tractor the outside tires on both axles will need to be
chained. Tractors equipped with wide-base singles will have to chain
each tire on each drive axle.

Driving for Maximum Fuel Economy
Driving tips to help you achieve Maximum Fuel Economy
1. Progressive Shifting – This means shifting at the lowest possible RPM
in order to get into the next gear. This will vary depending on if you are
loaded or empty and the grade. When you are empty you can upshift at a
lower RPM than when you are loaded due to not needing as much torque
to increase your speed and get into the next gear. So the main rule of
thumb is always upshift at as low of an RPM as possible to get into the
next gear. Additionally, there is no reason to go over 1400 RPM when on
the low side of the transmission, and no more than 1500 RPM on the
high side of the transmission. Any time you are turning the engine more
than 1500 RPM you are just throwing money out the window. 1500 is the
top side of the power curve and the torque actually drops off rapidly past
1500 RPM.
2. Down Shifting – This is a huge MPG killer if not done correctly which
will not allow the engine to perform at its maximum potential. The less
RPM’s used the better your fuel economy will be. The goal is to stay in
top gear as much as possible. The bottom end of the power curve is
slightly different between the Detroit DD15 and the current ISX engine,
they are both listed below:
A. Detroit DD15 – The DD15 engine’s sweet spot is slightly larger than
that of the Cummins engine. The power curve or sweet spot on the
DD15 is from 1,000 to 1,500 RPM. This means you should let the
DD15 engine pull all the way down to 1,000 RPM’s before down
shifting. Let the engine keep pulling in the highest gear possible all
the way down to 1,000 RPM.
B. Cummins ISX – The ISX engine power curve or sweet spot is from
1,000 to 1400 RPM's. This means you should let the ISX engine pull
all the way down to 1,000 RPM's before down shifting. Let the engine
keep pulling in the highest gear possible all the way down to 1,000 RPM.
C. Try to maintain a steady momentum, use the torque of the engine not
horse power. Good steady throttle control verses erratic quick throttle
movements is crucial. Full throttle accelerations waste fuel, but full
throttle use in pulling and about to crest a grade makes sense rather
than dropping a gear which increase RPM and fuel usage.

Shift Controllers
I-Shift
Volvo I-Shift is a 12-speed, two-pedal,
automated mechanical transmission
that maximizes driver comfort, payload
and fuel economy. It's designed to
integrate seamlessly with all Volvo
engines. There's no clutch pedal, and
the gearshift is operated by intelligent
electronics.
Optimized Idle ®
Optimized Idle reduces engine idle time by running the engine only when
required. Optimized Idle automatically shuts down and restarts the engine as
needed to ensure engine oil temperature remains within factory preset limits,
the batteries stay charged, and cab/sleeper temperature remains at the thermostat
setting. The benefits of the system include reduced engine idle time, fuel
savings, reduction of exhaust emissions and noise, increased starter and
engine life, and reduced chance of dead batteries.
Vehicles equipped with Optimized Idle have a label on the dash, and a telltale
(OPT IDLE) in the ICU. If equipped, a thermostat is located above the sleeper
bunk.
Ultra Shift
• Fully automated two-pedal design (no clutch pedal)
• Electronic Clutch Actuator (ECA) provides smooth engagement
• Safety features include auto neutral and Intelligent Hill Start Aid, which
prevents roll-back and rollforward while launching on
grades using foundation wheel
breaks
• Automatic, Manual and Low
modes offer driver full control
• Creep Mode

Optimized Idle ® cont’d
Optimized Idle operates in two modes:
1. Engine mode: Keeps the battery charged and engine oil temperature
between 60 and 104°F
2. Thermostat mode (activated when the optional thermostat is turned on):
Keeps the cab and sleeper at a constant preset temperature, in addition to
all functions available in engine mode.
Thermostat mode controls the set point, which is the desired temperature of
the cab and sleeper, and the comfort zone, which is the allowed temperature
deviation from the set point before the engine starts. The thermostat will display
defaults to show the temperature of the sleeper, but changes accordingly as
the buttons are pressed. The button functions are as follows:
Up Arrow: Increases the set point and comfort zone (allowed
temperature variation).
Down Arrow: Decreases the set point and comfort zone.
Cool/Heat: Sets either cooling or heating operation.
MODE: Scrolls through the various functions. It can also be used to set desired
temperature value. If a vehicle has Optimized Idle, the following functions
will not operate with the key in accessory mode. Optimized Idle may also
turn these functions off to reduce stress on the batteries.
• Cab climate control fan
• Sleeper climate control fan
• Mirror heat
• Fuel/water separator heat
• Seat heat
• Advertising light
• Auxiliary circulation fan (windshield)
• Air dryer
1. Activate Optimized Idle (engine mode)
1.1 Set the parking brake.
1.2 If it is open, close and secure the hood.
1.3 Start the engine and let it idle.
1.4 Put the transmission in neutral.
1.5 Turn on the cruise control.
The OPT IDLE lamp will blink, indicating that Optimized Idle is active. The
system is now in engine mode and after an initial phase, in which the idle
speeds up to 1000 rpm, the engine will stop and start automatically to keep
the battery charged and the engine oil warm.
DON HUMMER TRUCKING • • • Page 36
Optimized Idle ® cont’d
2. Activate Thermostat Mode (if equipped)
NOTE: When the system is in thermostat mode, it is also in engine mode. It
will continue to operate in engine mode even if thermostat mode is turned off.
2.1 With the system in engine mode, set the cab and sleeper heater or air
conditioner controls to the highest setting.
2.2 Turn on the thermostat by touching any of the four buttons. The display
will flash the current sleeper temperature and the previous mode (cooling
or heating) selected. If the cab needs to be cooled or heated, the
cool/heat icon will flash.
2.3 Choose either cool or heat by pressing the Cool/Heat button. Make
sure the selection matches that of the cab controls.
IMPORTANT: If the heat or cool selection of the thermostat does not
match that of the cab controls, the system will idle and cycle excessively.
2.4 Select Fahrenheit or Celsius by pressing and holding the MODE
button until either the "F" or "C" is displayed.
2.5 Select the temperature set point by pressing the up or down arrows,
as applicable. Holding the button will cause the display to scroll up
or down rapidly. When the desired set point is displayed, release the
button. The set point is stored in memory.
2.6 Select the temperature comfort zone by pressing the MODE button
until the upper and lower temperature limit icon is displayed. Then
use the up or down arrow to select one of the three comfort zones:
4°F (2°C), 7°F (4°C), or 10°F (6°C).
3. Deactivate Thermostat Mode
To deactivate thermostat mode and return to just engine mode, press and
hold the MODE button for three seconds.
4. Shut Down Optimized Idle
To completely shut down Optimized Idle, either turn off the ignition or use
the drive away feature. The drive away feature allows the use of all the
engine features. Use the drive away feature as follows:
4.1 If the engine is running: Release the parking brakes or put the
transmission in gear. If the engine is not running: Start the engine.
Release the parking brakes or put the transmission into gear.
4.2 Let the engine return to base idle. The active light will turn off.
Optimized Idle is now disabled.

ECAS 6x2 Tractors
ECAS piggybacks on the electronic controls of a tractor's antilock braking
system and traction control to sense when wheel spin begins. The controls
quickly dump some air from the dead axle's springs to transfer weight, and
traction, to the single drive axle. If a locking differential is used, the system
automatically engages it, then disengages at certain road speed.
Load Transfer (6x2 Vehicles)
To increase traction on a slippery road when drive axle wheel spin is detected,
an automatic load transfer occurs. This transfers as much of the load as possible
from the tag or pusher axle to the drive axle. ECAS will continue to hold the
transferred load for 20 seconds. After this interval,
the load is transferred back to a normal condition.
Rear Axle
The transfer back to normal takes

approximately 20 seconds. If load transfer
is active, all chassis height control

On some vehicles a load transfer indicator lamp comes on when the automatic
load transfer is turned off.

Axle Pre-Selection
Before the remote control can be used, the rear axle must be
selected for activation. Pushing the rear axle pre-selection key
enables the level control for this axle. An acknowledgment
light on the remote control indicates that the axle is selected.
Pressing the rear axle pre-selection key a second time will disable remote
control and turn off the acknowledgment light.
Raising and Lowering
The remote control unit allows the operator
to change the vehicle’s rear height within
programmed limits. Pressing the up or down
arrow keys causes the chassis height to be immediately altered. Releasing the
key ends the height change. Remote control height changes can only be
initiated while the vehicle is stationary or travelling at speeds less than 7 mph.
Normal Height
Pressing the normal height key will immediately return the
chassis height to the programmed normal level.
STOP Key
Pressing the STOP key, discontinues all height control
functions. This function allows the operator to discontinue
any automatic height change if the continuance of the change
could be hazardous. Pressing the STOP key will also discontinue
the load transfer function immediately.
NOTE: Disconnecting the remote control performs the
same functions as pressing the STOP key.

Suspension Air Disconnecting
from the Trailer
The only time you dump the air bags to couple the tractor to a trailer is if you
cannot get underneath the trailer. When dropping a trailer follow the same
system every time.
1. Gently back into the King Pin to release pressure.
2. Extend landing gear.
3. Remove Air lines and electrical lines.
4. Release 5th wheel, if manual 5th wheel release.
5. Move forward a foot or so and wait. Dump air bags on tractor.
DO NOT pull completely from under the trailer. Give the landing gear a
chance to hold and your air bags a chance to drop. Once the landing gear has
held and the trailer is not resting on your frame, you may pull out
completely.
13,200 Steer Axle
Steer axle weights have been sneaking up steadily in recent years. Do you
have the right rubber for the load? It’s not uncommon to find highway trucks
with front axles and suspensions rated for 13,200 pounds. While 12,000pound axles were the industry norm for many years, the move to 13,200pound axles came with the addition of all that emissions reduction gear. Are
you running a steer tire rated for that weight?
In mixed fleets running trucks with both
12,000-pound and 13,200-pound axles, it would
be easy to overlook the heavier axle rating.
Where do you find out what you tractor axle
weight can be?
What are your steer tires rated at?

How to Scale a Load
Don Hummer has equipped a few tractors with sliding fifth wheels and all of
its trailers with sliding tandems. By adjusting the positions of the fifth wheel
and the trailer tandems, the weight of the load can be re-distributed among
the three axle groups, enabling the maximum payload to be carried, while
still complying with axle limits.

Quality and Dependability...all across AmericaTM
We feature a CAT brand scale because
CAT SCALES ARE GUARANTEED!
If you get an overweight fine from
the state after our scale showed you
legal, we will immediately check our
scale. If our scale is wrong, we will
reimburse you for the fine. If our
scale is correct, a representative of
CAT Scale Company will appear in
court with the driver as a witness.
