WHAT IS ‘JUNETEENTH’?
June 19 commemorates the abolition of
slavery in Texas in June 1865, and the
emancipation of African-American slaves
throughout the Confederate south. Some
traditional celebratory songs include
“Sing Low, Sweet Chariot” and “Lift Every
Voice and Sing.” Celebrations also include parades and historical reenactments, skits, and dancing performances.
