NYU SUMMER LAW INSTITUTE: THE PACT PROGRAM IMPACT FALL 2015 — PACT NEWSLETTER Letter from the Executive Director A Summer Program that Made a Difference – In Life. T his past summer, Legal Outreach successfully engaged 146 rising 9th graders in our Summer Law Institutes in conjunction with six law schools – Columbia, NYU, Fordham, Brooklyn, St. John’s, and CUNY. The students selected hail from Harlem, E. Harlem, the South Bronx, Jamaica, Bedford Stuyvesant and similar communities throughout the city. Over the course of five weeks, they examined the components of our criminal justice process, specifically focusing on police investigations and police use of force. As students explored these topics, the great mystery was unveiled as they learned the rules governing inquiries, stops, frisks, searches and seizures, and arrests. Many were shocked to find that it’s not a matter of an officer’s discretion. This information was particularly revelatory for the 24 Black and Latino Boys who participated in the PACT Program - our Summer Law Institute at NYU Law School. A number shared stories of having been stopped numerous times by the police without knowing the reasons why. One, in fact, revealed that he had been stopped five times – and he’s only 13! Yet, by the end of the program, he, as well as the others, felt less vulnerable, LEGAL OUTREACH more empowered, and better equipped to address the situation if it ever happened again. Many thanks to the sponsors of the NYU PACT Summer Law Institute who have chosen to become involved with programs that James B. O’Neal, Co-Founder/Exec. Director protect and empower our young men of color. They include NYU Law School, Simpson Thacher & Bartlett LLP, The Leeman Foundation, Katherine Frink-Hamlett of Frink-Hamlett Legal Solutions in honor of Timothy Akil Hamlett and two groups of Black professionals - The Group and 1844 - all of whom not only supported the Institute financially but provided speakers and coordinated special field trips. Because of these sponsors, the lives of 24 Black and Latino boys have been changed. Next summer, our goal is to double or triple the number that can benefit. Will you help make a difference? Provide a grant, make a donation, serve as a guest speaker, or become a mentor. Please give in whatever form you can. Be a part of the solution! As we constantly tell our young men, stop talking about the problem – LET’S ALL DO SOMETHING! 501(C)(3) Elijah Stout delivers the opening statement for the Defense during the Mock Trial Finals.
