October /November/December 2014 Issue LYNNWOOD LINK Happy Holidays Lynnwood, It appears that winter is here in full force, everyone get bundled up and remember to be a good neighbor and keep your sidewalks shoveled. I would like to start by saying we had an amazing turnout for our Corn Roast Party, much appreciation to all who volunteered their time to help and a thank you to all the community members who came out making the event such a huge success. I would also like to acknowledge some of our local businesses who donated prizes for the events. A great big Lynnwood Community thank you to Second Cup 149 street café, Lorco Management and Designs, Go Klondike Cycle and Sports, Esthetics & Hair Design, Rhythmic Gymnastics, Luscious Salon as well as our MLA Steve Young and our MP Laurie Hawn. Your donations helped make our day extra special for the community. I am proud to announce we have two new members to our Lynnwood community executive. First we have, Jessie Ross, our new Hall Coordinator and Kris Peckitt our new Vice President. Welcome both of you to our team we are elated to have you both. We have two great events upcoming over the holiday season. First on December 13 we have our Christmas sleigh ride through Lynnwood and we have our annual New Year’s Eve celebration party. The sleigh ride is free to residents of Lynnwood (and friends). I do ask that in this time of need that you bring a small donation for the food bank so we can support this great cause. The New Years Eve Party will have tickets being sold in advance as well as at the door for $7 per person or $20 per family. I look forward to seeing you all at these fun community building events. Please Note we have filled the vacant spots on our Community League Executive but we are always looking for help with events so please consider getting involved in your community. You can email me directly at [email protected] if you have any questions about how you can contribute to making our community the best in Edmonton. Ken Pederson Lynnwood Community League President 2 Lynnwood Link Ours is a one stop Salon… LYNNWOOD RESIDENCE PLEASE BE ADVISED Our friends at the Edmonton Police Service wanted all to know that there is a group of criminals that have been hanging out in the Lynwood area for the last few weeks. They are out every night (for now as they will be picked up soon) and they are breaking into garages. A few of our services… Wedding hair & make up packages Hair Care, Skin Care & Tanning. Eyebrow Threading – gives the best arch! We perform Dermabrasion Facials with Diamond Tip; Anti-Aging Treatments & Anti Pigmentation Treatments… Ear piercing for babies is done with 2 operators at the same time… We have a Massage Therapist who is also a Holistic Practitioner – claim her services on your insurance!! All of our products are European. We carry specialized shampoo for thinning hair and booster for fast and fuller hair growth. THE BEST THING FOR CHRISTMAS WOULD BE GIFT CERTIFICATE FOR OUR DIFFERENT SERVICES LISTED BELOW OUR CLIENTS SAY THAT IS THE BEST GIFT THEY EVER GOT! 780-484-7255 #101, 15503 – 87 avenue Located in Whitehall Square They do the same thing every time in order to gain entry. They will pull door handles on vehicles parked either on the front street or in the back driveway. They will not normally break the glass or punch the lock to gain entry into the vehicle because this attracts too much attention. Once inside the vehicle they will steal loose change and the garage door opener. They will then open the overhead door to the garage and leave the area for a short period of time. When they return, if the door is still open, they assume that no residents have been woken up. They then enter to take whatever they desire. Please make sure your car doors are locked and take the garage opener inside the house with you. These are crimes of opportunity and the opportunities are very easy to minimize. Also please report all suspicious activity in the area. Let’s work together to keep our community safe. October /November/December 2014 Issue Community LYNNWOOD HOCKEY NEWS The Lynnwood teams are enjoying another great season. We are heading into the Christmas stretch and developing new skills daily. If you have any questions or if you wish to get involved in our program please feel free to contact us. Happy Holidays to all. Go Canucks! Jill & Cory 780-940-6875 THE LYNNWOOD FRIENDS PROGRAM Starting this winter season we wish to introduce our new neighbours helping neighbours snow shovelling program. If you are a neighbour who could use a friendly hand with some of the shovelling please contact us and we can add you to our list. All volunteers or community members needing assistance please contact Kris Peckitt 780-905-0901 or email at [email protected] Lynnwood Outdoor Rink Now Open The Outdoor Hockey Rink and skating pond is now open business. The attacks have all stemmed from the same pair of dogs; a Rottweiler and Pitbull that were living in the area. The two dogs are considered dangerous and could easily attack a child as well. The animals have been reported to Animal Control but to our knowledge the dogs were removed from the home prior to them arriving. If you see these dogs please be aware and we suggest keeping a safe distance. They should be immediately reported to Animal Control or the Edmonton Police Department. To the dogs that have been attacked, including our friend Dusty, we are glad that you are all making full recoveries. We look forward to seeing you around the neighbourhood! 6 Lynnwood Link 20 Things To Do In Edmonton With Your Kids Continuing on in our October-November Issue we will feature number 18 and 17 on our list of the top 20 things to do in Edmonton with your kids. #18 THING TO DO IN EDMONTON WITH KIDS: Act like a pioneer This outdoor living museum located 25 minutes from Edmonton tells the story of Ukrainian immigrants and their settlement history in Central Alberta from 1892 to the 1930s. Snow that remains on sidewalks is hazardous for everyone, but especially for people with limited mobility who may be severely injured from a fall on ice or snow. Un-cleared walkways also make it difficult for people who deliver services in our community - mail carriers, meter readers, delivery drivers, firefighters, and paramedics. That is why the Community Standards Bylaw requires that you clean the public walks around your property down to the pavement within 48 hours of a snowfall. When you remove snow promptly after a snowfall, you play an important role in keeping our city moving safely in difficult weather. Be your neighbourhood's urban hero and make it great, within 48. For all houses that plan to leave out bottles we ask that you put them out the morning of the event as in the past there have been individuals taking the bottles when they are left out the night before. We would like to make an honorable mention to Roy and the Lynnwood 116 Scouts. They have graciously offered to split the cost with the community league on having our floors redone in the hall. This is a vital task to ensuring that the integrity of our building is maintained. To Roy and the Lynnwood 116th we thank you and ask that all members of our community continue to support our Local scouts This is a big event to our fundraising campaign and we thank all who continue to support our Scouts. Need Boxes for Moving or the Holidays? We are always looking for new scouts to join our association One of our kind neighbours has let us know that she receives numerous boxes every month (over 60 per month) for medical supplies that they need but they have an abundance of boxes that they just can’t break down and get rid of. So free strong boxes for any and all who could use. Please contact Margaret @ 780-489-8028.
