Main tasks:
• Supporting in Investment Decisions (preparation of
the analytical documents; company analysis;
macroeconomic studies)
US, Europe, Switzerland, Japan, Emerging Markets
• Marketing material (e.g. CEO background
relevance to TSR generation, winners and losers of
credit crunch)
‘Research’ Etymology
The word research is derived from the Middle French
"recherche", which means "to go about seeking", the
term itself being derived from the Old French term
"recerchier" a compound word from "re-" + "cerchier",
or "sercher", meaning 'search'.The earliest recorded use
of the term was in 1577
Research Definition
Research is Organized and Systematic Way of Finding
Answers to Questions
Organized – planned procedure (certain structure and
method)
Systematic – certain steps and procedures that always
have to be done
Types of Research (I)
• Quantitative Research;
Types of Research (II)
• Qualitative research, SHV
Time for New Board
Communication Style, 2005
Types of Research (III)
• Basic research;
Best in Class
or Best Overall, 2008
Types of Research (IV)
• Applied research;
Goodwill and Risk,
2006
Types of Research (V)
• Longitudinal research;
What is happening
to value?, 2007
Types of Research (VI)
• Explanatory research: The researcher specifies
explicit hypotheses and then conducts a study to
test these hypotheses.
• Exploratory research: The researcher does not
explicitly state hypotheses. The researcher conducts
a study and examines data to generate hypotheses
to be tested in future research

Action research
Main Steps in Research
• Observations and Formation of the topic: Consists of the
subject area of ones interest and following that subject area
to conduct subject related research.
Check everything what was done already on the topic!!!
• Hypothesis: A testable prediction which designates the
relationship between two or more variables.
• Conceptual definition: Description of a concept by relating it
to other concepts.
Main Steps in Research
• Gathering of data: Consists of identifying a population and
selecting samples, gathering information from and/or about
these samples by using specific research instruments.
• Analysis of data: Involves breaking down the individual
pieces of data in order to draw conclusions about it.
• Data Interpretation: This can be represented through tables,
figures and pictures, and then described in words.
• Test, revising of hypothesis
• Conclusion, reiteration if necessary
Research Success Factors
You have to be critical!!!
You have to be motivated!!!
Be creative and propose the study results application
and research continuation!
Seek new research methods to test hypothesis!
Research Success Factors
Research answers should…
• Be clearly stated
• Be supported by the analysis conducted
• Be put in context
• Be reliable
• Generate new questions
Research Success Factors
Good research…
• Is well-organized
• Provides reliable results
• Is ethical
• Can be replicated
• Employs appropriate design & analysis
Cross-cultural Research
Project
Project name: Survivors of the Credit Crunch
Project Participants: CE Services vs. Group of Master students of
TUT coordinated by Aaro Hazak, Phd., Senior Researcher.
CE Services Input: Idea, data, know-how, publication;
TUT input: the analysis, final presentation
Research Period: January 2009 – May 2009
Communication: Phone and Email;
Win-Win Situation
Cross-cultural Research
Project
There were certain difficulties:
• Communication problems;
• Understanding problems (not always got what we wanted to
see);
• Time constraints.
Cooperate with Private
Companies, Authorities, NGOs
Main problem of CEE
Reseach, is a “chasm”
between the academic
and real world.
