Undergraduate and graduate students design and build a hybrid, plug-in hybrid, or electric vehicle and compete in autocross, acceleration tests, car design and marketing presentations, and a 22 km endurance event on a fixed amount of energy—a challenge that proves difficult to master. Formula Hybrid continues to gain momentum. From six teams and 60 students in 2007 to this year’s 36 teams and 600 students from five countries, Formula Hybrid is widening the road to energy-efficient automotive engineering. Derived from the former Formula Hybrid-in-Progress class, our Electric Only category is compatible with the new FSAE-Electric and European Electric category. We are excited about engaging more student engineers in designing the next generation of automotive drivetrain systems. We are delighted that students are directing their ingenuity and creativity to advancing plug-in hybrid and electric technologies, as we believe the ideas developed for competitions today may lead to improved applications tomorrow.
