Fairs across California are still struggling with the elimination of fair funding in 2011 The 10th D.A.A. Fair Board and Staff are working hard to make up for the funding losses. "The opportunity provided to us by Merle and his organization will hopefully give us some much needed funding relief" stated CEO, Cliff Munson, "It is not often you get an offer from a country legend to help a couple of local non profits. Both the Friends of the Fair and the Child Abuse Prevention Council will be forever grateful to Mr. Haggard and his organization for coming up with the Fair Aid 2013 festival at the Siskiyou Golden Fairgrounds”. SEPTEMBER 12TH AT MEADOWLARK | 5-7pm Making a Difference: Pride and Progress Siskiyou Parks and Greenway Association For an organization that’s only four years old, the Siskiyou Gardens, Parks and Greenway Association is making a visible difference in Yreka’s community. The nonprofit 501(c)3 organization represents volunteers from the Yreka Creek Greenway, Friends of Greenhorn Park, Siskiyou Arboretum and Yreka Community Gardens as one umbrella group. From cleaning up Greenhorn Park, to feeding the hungry and working on flood control, the all-volunteer organization “is as involved in economic and community development as any business member of the Chamber,” says SGPGA volunteer Ayn Perry. The Greenway is directly involved in making the Creek a safer and more attractive place for the community to gather, without fear of criminal elements or vandalism. The Greenway, which began 25 years ago to promote the natural and cultural resources of the Yreka Creek watershed, is now in the midst of a multi-year project to improve flood control in the city. The project will incorporate public art and recreational opportunities as well as enhance the stream for anadromous fish and other wildlife. The Greenway coordinates an ongoing cleanup effort on the Creek; call Jerry Mosier to volunteer at 842-4708. Friends of Greenhorn Park grew out of the City’s efforts to develop and enhance our premier city park, and is now engaged in restoration of historic mining elements with E Clampus Vitus, and organizing weed abatement parties. Recent achievements include working with the Ford Family Foundation Cohort to develop trail signs, maps and the new information kiosks. In the works is a complete boundary survey to prevent trespass on adjacent private land to be funded by the City of Yreka, Yreka Rotary and SGPGA. Call Sam Cuenca or Jennifer Silveira to volunteer for FOG. The Siskiyou Arboretum has taken root in Greenhorn, developing a native plant demonstration garden at the upper park and signage to educate the public about native plants along the reservoir trail. Native plants are so well adapted to our soils and climate that they make good choices for drought-tolerant landscaping. These same plants are being grown out in the Arboretum Nursery on Ranch Lane (by the entrance to Lower Greenhorn) for sale to the public and in public restoration projects such as the Greenway. An upcoming event to put on your calendar is the native plant sale to be held on October 5. Pines, doug firs and flowering shrubs such as mock orange, spirea and redbud will be available, as well as native grasses. The sale is in conjunction with Shasta Valley Resource Conservation District at the Arboretum Nursery from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The Yreka Community Gardens, which began as part of the Arboretum, now has its own life and history in Yreka High School’s former outdoor ag/hort classroom. For five years YCG has been offering seasonal plots for growing veggies and learning about gardening and composting. This year they expanded to a new site at the County Fairgrounds, where, with Shasta Valley Rotary, they have grown produce for donation to the Coordinated Services Food Bank. YCG is also planning a public- and ADAaccessible Five Senses Garden, and is search of a volunteer coordinator to implement the design. Jane Hall would love to hear from you if you’d like to take this project on; call her at 842-5056. Almost all of the groups’ efforts involve coordinating with other organizations, agencies and individuals. As Debbie Kegg of Shasta Valley Rotary remarked after spending a recent day helping clean up the Greenway, “If everyone volunteered just three hours a month doing something to improve Yreka, our entire community would benefit.” To volunteer or contribute to any of SGPGA’s project areas, go to their website at www.sgpga.org or friend them on Facebook. 100% of donations go to improvements to the area’s gardens, parks and greenway, and products such as the Community Pride brochures.
