Take Your Business on Retreat
Time with your staff can help your business
Whether it's for two hours, a half day, or a full weekend, a business retreat with your staff
can create new ideas and strategies that can re-inspire your team and help your business
flourish. As the chamber of commerce selects a date for their board retreat, we thought we
would share our retreat strategies with you.
Respect Our Mixer Hosts- Attend
Please make time to
attend the monthly
chamber mixer. Each
host is a local Yreka
business who puts
forth a great amount of
time, effort and funds
to host our members.
Show respect for our
host by ensuring that
at least one member of
your staff attends to thank
the hosting business for
their service in Yreka and
to socialize with attendees.
Plan to represent your business at our next mixer.

What is a Tourism Improvement District
Is Yreka Ready to be a Destination City?
For each workshop, ensure participants
that their ideas will be valued and will be
visible in future business practices and
projects.

Break for a fun lunch, BBQ dinner, or an
outing .
For workshop sessions where you present a topic to the group, there are a
number of strategies you can use to keep
all participants involved and able to
share their ideas.
Pair Share: Participants turn to a partner
to discuss a topic that has been presented. After 5 minutes of discussion,
each pair presents their thoughts to the
large group.
The Conversation Pit: Organize participates in small groups of three or four.
Post 4-6 topics around the room on large
white paper with pens. Have each group
start at a station and discuss and document their ideas, suggestions, and
thoughts on the poster. Rotate the groups
clockwise every 5 minutes until each
group has been to each station. After the
last rotation, each group presents one of
the poster topics and group findings to
the room. Invite additional comments
from the room following each poster
presentation.

Have you ever wondered how certain cities and counties become tourism destinations? How did those
once quaint undiscovered towns like
Redding and Napa, CA become the
highly visible destinations they are
today?
The answer is, these locations now
put forth a well marketed image as
premier California destinations with
major events and attractions to back
it up. Billboard signage, TV commercials, tourists information sites
and print and online advertising
reinforce their image as a destination for overnight guests to flock to
their community.
We often hear that Yreka has potential to be a tourism destination.
Tourism is essential to the economy
of Yreka.
With our location on 1-5, local fairgrounds, gold-rush heritage, friendly
community, specialty shops and
hotels, we have some of the makings. Like the late bloomer at the

among tourism-related businesses.
By definition a Tourism Improvement
District provides stable funding for the
necessary marketing to keep a destination competitive in a difficult economy.
Redding, CA
For example 43 hotels in Redding created a Tourism Improvement District.
As a result this non-profit corporation
manages a budget of over $600,000 that
raises awareness of Redding as a destination. They provide a consistent presence for the city across several marketing mediums and create opportunities
that bring in large-group business. Services are specifically designed to increase the number of overnight visitors
patronizing assessed businesses in the
district. Because the funds are not controlled by a government entity, they
cannot be subjected to the budget cuts
municipalities have been forced to
make.
Napa, CA
The Napa Valley Tourism Improvement District (NVTID) ensures that
funding for the “Visit Napa Valley”
campaign promotes Napa Valley as
North America's premier wine, food,
arts and wellness visitor. Their district
includes lodging businesses (hotels,
motels, bed and breakfasts, etc.). The
improvement district is funded by a 2%
assessment from gross room rentals. A
portion of the assessment (0.5%) is
dedicated to marketing efforts aimed at
promoting tourism in each of Napa
County's local jurisdictions.
San Diego, CA
After forming a TID, San Diego successfully launched the hugely popular
“Happy Happens” advertising campaign. Over its first five years, the District provided more than $25 million a
year in marketing funds to the San
Diego Film Commission, the San Diego
Sports Commission, and numerous
other tourism-related organizations and
events.
Fresno, CA
In early 2010, the City of Fresno announced plans to establish a TID in
partnership with the neighboring City of
Clovis. Because of its success, both the
Fresno and Clovis city councils approved the formation the Fresno‑Clovis
Convention & Visitors Bureau. The new
bureau is now marketing the area as
entire destination.
How to Set up a Tourism
Improvement District
Form Steering Committee
Participants can include lodging business
owners, government representatives, and
other supporters.
Berkeley, CA
In August 2004, commercial and residential property owners in Berkeley
voted to form the Temescal/Telegraph
Business Improvement District along
Telegraph , Shattuck Avenue, 51st
Street, Claremont Avenue, and the Children's Hospital. The TID's mission is to
make the Temescal Telegraph commercial corridor more pedestrian-friendly
for its residents, to build upon the sense
of community, and attract new shoppers.
Outreach to Tourism Related Businesses
Assemble database of potential members and
partners.
Yreka, CA
The Siskiyou County Economic Development Council, in partnership with the
Cities of Yreka and Mt. Shasta along
with Siskiyou County, has begun the
process of creating a draft county-wide
marketing strategy and exploring possible options for funding such a strategy.
TID Formed
Non-tax funds used to promote tourism
In September of 2012, the first tourism
summit was held that engaged tourism
stakeholders around the County in
brainstorming for the county-wide marketing strategy. A draft marketing strategy has been created and will be discussed and finalized at the next tourism
summit schedule for mid-August. The
foremost expert on TBIDs*, John Lambeth of Civitas will also be in attendance and will discuss more specifically
the possibilities and options for a Siskiyou County TBID.

Review and certification by local municipality.
The stakeholders agree upon the assessment,
typically a 1%–2.5% assessment — as well
as determine how best to utilize the funding.
Moreover, the assessment is not a mandatory
levy on local residents. Rather, it is self‑imposed by participating businesses.
What Could TID Funds
Do for Yreka?
Launch and maintain “Visit Yreka” or “Visit
Siskiyou” Marketing Campaigns.
Create or restore a tourist attraction site like a
gold tunnel, a real gold panning station, or a
grey goose visitors area.
Sponsor marketing for large scale events and
concerts specifically designed to increase the
number of overnight visitors.
* TIDs are referred to by many names
including: tourism marketing district
(TMD) and tourism business improvement district (TBID).
