Easter l Sunday, April 20 Memorial Day l Monday, May 26 Independence Day l Friday, July 4 www.facebook.com/sefcu MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT AND CEO ■ After enduring a long and harsh winter throughout much of the Northeast, we are beginning to see a light at the end of the tunnel as our thoughts turn to warmer days, new growth, and a summer with longer days and endless opportunities ahead. At SEFCU, we see tremendous opportunity ahead to help make our community a better place through our corporate social responsibility programs. Unlike corporate philanthropy, simply writing a check, our goal is to help non-profits in the neighborhoods we serve through the donation of time, talent, as well as treasure. SEFCU President and CEO Michael Castellana speaks at a press conference Since the inception of our corporate philosophy launching the Capital District Community Garden’s new Urban Grow Center of Banking with a Purpose in 2008, we have in Troy. The center, sponsored in part by SEFCU, will allow farmers to grow positively impacted more than 1,400 non-profit and distribute local fruits and vegetables in a city environment. organizations and our staff has donated nearly Teams to help raise awareness and necessary funds for 100,000 hours of their time and talent to help make research to combat heart disease. a difference in the community. With that said, the focus of my message in MoneyClips will center around our efforts in On the business front, we’re pleased to announce that the community and asking our members and stakeholders thanks to a new designation we received from our federal to join us on our journey. regulator, the NCUA, we are now in an even better position For more than 20 years, we have been working with Big Brothers Big Sisters on a variety of programs to help raise money and awareness about their cause. In March, we celebrated our 21st anniversary of sponsoring Bowl for Kids’ Sake to benefit Big Brothers Big Sisters. I am very pleased to say we had over 250 bowlers in the Capital Region and 15 bowlers in Syracuse. If you are looking to get involved with helping a child in need, please consider being a Big Brother or Big Sister. You will find that volunteering to be a “Big” will be one of the most enjoyable and fulfilling things you will ever do. Looking ahead, we will be participating in two Heart Walks to help support the American Heart Association. The first is in Binghamton on Saturday, May 3 and the second is in Albany on Saturday, May 10. The number 1 killer of women and men in the United States is cardiovascular disease, which includes heart disease, stroke, and high blood pressure. Please consider joining one of our SEFCU to help members and businesses fulfill their dreams. Now more than ever we will be a community-focused credit union, able to loan more in the commercial arena and have a bigger impact in our neighborhoods. As you can see, SEFCU certainly isn’t shy about its commitment to the community. In eighty years, that commitment has never been stronger. You have big dreams for yourself and your loved ones and we are here to help make them happen. Our dream is to continue to support vital non-profit organizations that provide critical services day in and day out and to have you, our members, involved in our efforts. If you are interested in getting involved with Big Brothers Big Sisters, join one of our Heart Walk teams, or participate in any of our other endeavors, please e-mail us at [email protected]. Enjoy reading this issue of MoneyClips. On behalf of everyone at SEFCU, thank you for choosing us as your financial institution. Whether you are banking online or offline, below are some important tips to keep in mind to ensure your confidential information remains just that. Banking on the Web • Never use an unknown or kiosk computer to access your bank account Keeping it safe offline • Lock financial documents in a safe place at home • Keep your wallet or purse in a safe place at work to avoid coworkers or others stealing them • Never click on a link sent to you via e-mail to access your bank account • Take only the identification, credit, and debit cards you plan to use when you go out. Leave your Social Security card at home. Make a copy of your health insurance card and black out all but the last four digits on the copy. Carry the copy with you — unless you are going to use your card at the doctor’s office. • Always make sure you are connected to your financial institution’s legitimate online banking site and not a fraudulent one made to look like the real site. Look at the URL to validate authenticity of the connection • Before you share information at your workplace, stores, your child's school, or a doctor's office, ask why they need it, how they will safeguard it, and if you are required to share it. • Make your password difficult to crack by including upper case, lower case, numbers, and special characters • Shred receipts, credit offers, credit applications, insurance forms, physician statements, checks, bank statements, expired credit cards, and similar documents when you don’t need them any longer. • Never use a computer that does not have the latest anti virus software installed and working Shred unwanted documents for free Make sure important papers don’t get in the wrong hands. Don’t share your health plan information with anyone who offers free health services or products. • Take outgoing mail to post office collection boxes or the post office. Promptly remove mail that arrives in your mailbox. If you won’t be home for several days, request a vacation hold on your mail. These accounts are known as “lost,” “abandoned,” or “unclaimed” funds. If accounts remain dormant for three years, the assets will be turned over to the Office of the State Comptroller which will serve as the custodian of the money. If you can prove you are entitled to the money you can reclaim it as yours at any time. To avoid this hassle, simply make a deposit or withdrawal to or from your account. For information about SEFCU’s abandoned property policy, call the Member Solutions Center at 518-452-8183 or 800-727-3328. The best outside spaces could be in your own back or front yard. The outdoor evolution Today’s outdoor spaces are varied, intricate, and personalized and it’s not unusual to see combinations of decks, patios, water features, and even fire elements incorporated into designs. And, evolving material selections are also giving homeowners more choices. Many people are also moving toward composite decking to eliminate splinters and maintenance, and pavers and retaining walls can offer uniformity in color and appearance, making them an attractive alternative to natural stone. First impressions Even if you aren’t planning on selling your house, curb appeal remains the foundation of that critical first impression. An attractive, well-maintained front yard looks inviting and shows that you care about the appearance of your home – inside and out. If you are planning on selling in the next few years, it may be wise to consider installing a deck or patio. They tend to give the house more of a finished look and may add some value to the resale of your home. Consider getting estimates from professional landscapers who can make recommendations for your yard, taking into consideration the soil type, drainage, amount of sunlight (or shade) in your yard and a number of important factors. Even if you can’t afford to have the whole project completed at once, with the help of a professional you can develop a phased plan to implement over a series of several years to spread out the cost. But, if you really want to jump right in and show off your green thumb, think about attending a class at a home improvement store. The tips you’ll get will be worth your time! Money talks Setting a budget is a smart step for homeowners who want to control cost and outcomes. Landscapers will work with homeowners to review options and then determine a plan that fits the budget and meets your goals. SEFCU can help No matter if you choose to do it yourself or hire a professional, SEFCU can help you get the money you need to beautify your yard this spring with a home equity loan or line of credit. Here are some thoughts from Tom McGrath, Certified Financial Planner™, at SEFCU Wealth Management Services. Question: How do you assist SEFCU members/clients? Tom McGrath: As a Certified Financial Planner™, we help members identify the reasons behind their financial decisions by establishing what we call a “financial vision” and “vision statement.” The vision statement is the compass that guides us as we develop a long-term financial plan. Keeping each person’s goals in mind, we develop a plan that starts to look at the steps people will need to take to achieve them as well as certain “what if” scenarios. Once a plan is developed we’ll suggest different strategies that help increase the likelihood of success. Lastly, we’ll work with members to monitor how those strategies are working to ensure they remain aligned with our client’s vision statement. From there, the process repeats itself starting with a review of their vision statement. Life is not static, and members need a dynamic approach to planning. MONEYCLIPS SPRING 2014 17 W E A LT H M A N A G E M E N T S E R V I C E S Q & A W I T H T O M M C G R AT H ( C O N T I N U E D ) Q: What are some solutions to the challenges clients may encounter? A: Working with a trusted advisor is an important part of helping members stay on track. When working with members we consider the whole picture and develop a dynamic approach that is customized to each person. Because we don’t work on commission, members can expect unbiased and impartial advice. Q: What type of “what if” scenarios do you look at? A: If we’ve learned anything over the last ten years it’s that market volatility can wreak havoc on even the most conservative investment approaches. So one of the scenarios I look at is the impact a bear market would have at the time when a client plans on retiring. By presenting the various possible scenarios, individuals may decide to save more now or change their retirement date. Other scenarios involve the unexpected death of a spouse and how that financially impacts the surviving spouse, or what happens when the primary bread winner is disabled, or how inflation can impact retirement income. Ultimately, the scenarios we run are based on where each member is in his/her life and what the biggest concerns are. Schedule your no-obligation consultation today. Call SEFCU Wealth Management Services at 518-451-2948. Q: What can members expect when they are working with you? A: We are committed to providing honest and impartial advice. We believe the recommendations we give will help members pursue their long-term goals. Q: What are your thoughts on SEFCU turning 80? A: The fact that SEFCU is turning 80 is a testament to our members and the way the organization is run. Just like any successful enterprise, SEFCU evaluates, adjusts and recreates its business plan, just like every family should. There is an old adage in the financial planning world that holds true for businesses and individuals alike. “Nobody plans to fail, instead they fail to plan.” SEFCU’s success is a result of planning and adapting to change which is the same basic process we use with our clients.
