Frankfort Chamber Annual
Golf Tournament
Friday, June 19th
Juniper Hill Golf Course
Corporate Sponsor Farmers Bank invites fellow Chamber members to attend the Chamber Annual Golf Tournament on Friday, June 19. The tournament will kick-off with a registration and a putting contest at 11:30 a.m., and
the shotgun start at 1:00 p.m.
The Chamber’s Golf Committee has been working on some new ideas for
2009. This year we will host a Las Vegas themed tournament - including a
mini-poker run throughout the course, try your luck at a game of 21 or take
off a stroke with a throw of the dice. The Chamber tournament is the place
to be on June 19th, so bring your friends, co-workers or clients and lets go to
VEGAS!
Thanks to our continued supporters, sponsors and volunteers, the Chamber has been able to promote, represent and support local Chamber member
businesses and the Frankfort/Franklin County community. With a sell-out
crowd of players, the tournament has become one of the Chamber’s highly
regarded networking events.
There are various levels of sponsorships to take advantage of and what a
great way to get your company’s name in front of Frankfort business leaders.
Hole sponsorships continue in 2009 at $150. As a Hole Sponsor, your company will receive a sponsor sign, complete with your company’s logo placed
on the tee. For an additional $50 you can add a contest (longest drive, closest
to pin, etc.) which covers the cost of the winner’s prize.
New in 2009 the Chamber is hosting Cart Sponsors as well. A sponsor flag
with your company’s name will be placed on your sponsored golf cart. A great way
to introduce your company to potential customers for $75.
Check out pages six (6) and seven (7) of the May edition of the Chamber
News and see how you can get involved in the upcoming Chamber Golf
Tournament. Volunteers are always needed - call Suzy at the Chamber if you
would like to assist in the planning of this year’s event or if you can help the
day of the tournament.
Can’t make the tournament - you can still be involved - we need donations
for goody bags and door prizes. Your business name will be listed in all our
publications on the day of play.
Due to the economic times - player registration has been REDUCED
to $65 per player or $260 per foursome. Registration covers green fees, golf
carts, lunch, beverage tickets, supper in the shade, and some great door
prizes. Register your team or sign up for sponsorship online TODAY!

From the Desk of Mark Schmitt, Chamber President
The past several months have brought economic challenges
that businesses haven’t seen for decades; many are struggling,
and some won’t survive. That’s why we are urging our members not to slash their marketing and training budgets; those
things are essential to long term success. Instead, we encourage businesses to seriously evaluate their business model and
ensure they are positioned to emerge stronger.
The Chamber will continue to hold seminars in 2009 that will assist employers and staff members to better serve their customers. Our Customer
Service Seminar hosted by Bill Drury was a huge success, with over 45
chamber members in attendance.
A top priority for the Frankfort Chamber is advocacy. Advocacy in all its
forms is the basis of your company’s or organization’s strength. In this economic climate, it is more enticing for local, state and federal governments
to look at new fees and taxes, so we have to be a strong advocate and support our members. Advocating a pro-business agenda to elected officials at
every level is just as important now as ever before. With most cities and
states facing record budget deficits, we as a chamber must diligently watch
for new taxes and user fees that could cripple already struggling businesses.
Unemployment insurance taxes, are a real possibility as claims increase and
trust funds decrease and the Frankfort Chamber will continue to watch for
this legislation in 2010.
With this in mind, the Frankfort Chamber will begin hosting a Lunch with
Leaders luncheon, where our Government Affairs Council, representatives
from small, medium and large businesses will invite our local leaders to
lunch on a quarterly basis with the hope that better communications will
help our community to prosper as a business friendly town.
Our effort to keep members updated on community events and happening
is another key priority of the Frankfort Chamber. Our first In the Know
breakfast was held on April 21st at the Capital Plaza Hotel. Directors from
Frankfort Tourism, Downtown Frankfort and the Frankfort Chamber updated those in attendance on upcoming events and River Development. Bill
Cull, President of the Grand Theatre, provided a glimpse into the 2009/2010
theatre events and programs. In order to continue to keep our members updated the Chamber will host another In the Know breakfast on June 10th at
Frankfort Regional Medical Center - Pavilion Conference Room.
The Chamber in conjunction, with Capital Community Economic/
Industrial Development Authority, Kentucky State University, and several
small business owners have formed a Small Business Network Group
(SBN). The SBN group, chaired by Ed Councill, Canoe Kentucky will
meet monthly, beginning in June 2009 to establish a network of business
owners, mentors and local officials to assist Entrepreneurs and existing
businesses share concerns and seek answers for business issues they are facing. To get involved with the SBN group, please call the Chamber office.
The Chamber will continue to focus on networking and marketing our
members to the community and regionally through our Regional Business
After Hours, Quality of Place magazine for newcomers, Capital Visitor
Guide for tourists, and our daily referrals. The Chamber staff receives several calls per week requesting referrals for various companies. Staff only
refer members in good standing, so please be sure that staff has your correct
information, brochures or business cards in our office.

GRAND THEATRE
VOLUNTEER REQUEST
The time has come for us to do
our best to clean the historic plaster walls that will be preserved
and displayed in the Grand Theatre. We intend to do this beginning on Friday afternoon, May
15, 4:00 p.m. and work until
about 7:00 p.m. (or later if desired), then return to
work at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 16, work for
about four hours (or more), and reconvening at 1:00 p.
m. on Sunday, May 17, to finish the process.
We believe we need about eight (8) volunteers to
make the process work efficiently. The number of volunteers and the flow of the work might reduce the time
required for this work and thereby eliminate the Sunday work hours. If we receive enough volunteers, we
also may be able to break sessions in half and reduce
the amount of time a volunteer might be required to
spend; the work hours, as a result, are hard to predict.
Most volunteers will need to be in reasonably good
physical condition and have adequate balance to stand
on reasonably safe scaffolding five feet (5’) off the
ground or on ladders of equal distance above the
ground. Additionally, the work will involve handbrushing and vacuuming plaster walls along with wet
cleaning a portion of the walls. There will be a considerable amount of dust that persons regularly bothered
by this may not be able to tolerate. We will have a
standard nose/mouth mask available, although these
can be difficult to keep on while working.
Please advise us ([email protected]) as to your
availability (which days and times) you will commit
over the weekend to do this work. We hope to have our
work schedule in place by Wednesday, May 13.

and insight for future employment. The Thorn Hill WIN program will attempt to select workers for each
worksite according to the specific skills employers indicate.

2009 GED Graduation
Our 2009 GED graduation ceremonies will be held on June 11th at 7:00 p.m. in the gym at the Thorn Hill
School. 96 members of Franklin County have earned their GED’s this year. The annual earning potential
for an employee with a GED degree is $8,000 higher than someone without a diploma according to national
averages. Based upon those averages, these 96 employees should produce $768,000 or more annual income
in their future years than they have in their past years. That is a substantial boost to the tax base in Franklin
County. We congratulate them and invite you to join us as we celebrate their success!
Optimists Seeking Members
The Frankfort Optimist Club is looking for volunteers who want to make a
difference for the children in our community. The club conducts many annual
projects, such as an essay scholarship contest, a fun run for children, a Christmas party for Headstart students, the Rising Star program that recognizes a
boy and a girl in each public school for doing their best, the Special Friends Mentoring program
that matches mentors to students, and participates in the Longest Day of Play sponsored by the
Franklin County Health Department. The club believes new members will strengthen its capacity
to "Provide hope and positive vision by bringing out the best in kids," which is the Mission Statement for Optimist International.
All interested volunteers are invited to a club meeting, held each Tuesday at noon at the Office
Pub and Deli. Meetings are designed for those who have an hour for lunch and need to get back
to work. A special informational meeting has been scheduled for Tuesday, June 9, that will provide more information about the Frankfort Optimist Club.

BUFFALO TRACE ROLLS IN
SOME UNUSUAL BARRELS
Distillery continues to experiment with whiskey
The mad scientists at Buffalo Trace Distillery are at it again! This round of unique experimentation involves the type of oak barrel used in the aging process. Any guesses? If you said Mongolian Oak, you are
correct!
Master Distiller, Harlen Wheatley, has reached deep into his bag of tricks and is ready to see what interesting things will happen by aging his precious spirit in Mongolian Oak barrels.
Why Mongolian Oak you ask? “It’s a really unique proposition and something that hasn’t been tried before,” commented Wheatley. “We love to try new and innovative things and this one was on our list. We
can’t wait to see how it turns out eight or ten years down the road.”
Not only are these barrels new and innovative, they are also expensive. Ten barrels have been put away
for aging at a cost of $530 each—about four times the cost of an American White Oak barrel. It also took
more than a year to coordinate production of these barrels.
The Mongolian Oak barrels are an industry standard 53 gallons. A cooperage in Spain supplied the Mongolian Oak to the Independent Stave Company and they crafted the barrels. The barrels received a #4
char—about 55 seconds—and will be filled with Buffalo Trace mash bill #1. This is the same recipe which
is used for Buffalo Trace Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey. For more information about Buffalo Trace
Distillery please visit www.buffalotrace.com
FRANKFORT REGIONAL MEDICAL CENTER SELECTED AS
BEST COMPANY TO WORK FOR IN KENTUCKY
Frankfort Regional Medical Center was announced as the best company to work for in Kentucky at the Fifth Annual Best Places to Work in Kentucky Awards Dinner by the Kentucky Society for Human Resource Management
(KYSHRM) state council and the Kentucky Chamber of Commerce. This is the third year in a row that the hospital
has been recognized as one of the best places to work and the top hospital among large-sized companies (250 employees or greater).
“Being selected as the top hospital to work for is a very prestigious award for our staff,” said Chip Peal, Chief Executive Officer. “Being selected as the top company among all of the large sized employers is an even greater honor.
There are many great companies to work for in Kentucky, and for our hospital to be recognized validates we are doing the right things, both for our employees and for the patients we have the privilege of caring for each day.”
Frankfort Regional Medical Center’s employees are given flexible schedules and the encouragement and tools
needed to advance their careers, including a tuition reimbursement program for continuing education expenses.
Many employees enjoy the convenience of self-scheduling, and there is no mandatory overtime policy that allows
staff the freedom to pick up extra hours – but only if they want to.
Fifty five companies were recognized at the ceremony at the Lexington Convention Center on April 21; 31 in the
small/medium-sized category (25 – 249 employees) and 24 in the large-sized category (250 or more employees).
The Best Places to Work program is open to all publicly and privately held organizations, either for-profit or notfor-profit. To be eligible, companies must have at least 25 employees in Kentucky. According to the Kentucky
Chamber of Commerce, Kentucky has more than 90,000 publicly and privately-owned establishments eligible (with
20 or more employees). The goal of Best Places to Work in Kentucky is to raise the bar among the state’s employers
and create excellence and employee satisfaction in the workplace that will attract talented people for years to come.
“This award is a tribute to all of our staff. It reflects the possibilities when people strive towards a common goal,”
said Bev Young, Director of Human Resources. “We have a great team of healthcare professionals and it is a privilege to serve our communities.”
Further details about the Best Places to Work in Kentucky initiative can be found online at
www.bestplacestoworkky.com.

Every Child Deserves a Designated Driver
Protecting children is a value most Americans cherish. Yet, despite the fact that drunk driving is a violent
crime, driving while impaired with children riding in the vehicle is not commonly acknowledged as a form
of child endangerment or abuse. The Centers for Disease Control estimates that 68% of children killed in
drunk driving crashes between 1997 and 2001 were riding with the drunk driver.
Most adults would never choose to ride with an impaired driver, but children have little choice when the
driver is a parent or other adult with authority over them. MADD believes that children are our greatest resource and our future. We are taking action to help protect the children who are needlessly put in danger
every day here in Kentucky.
Driving impaired with a child in the vehicle IS a form of child abuse. Every child deserves a designated
driver. MADD Kentucky – like so many others – is
struggling financially because of the current economy.
Without the needed funding, programs that help protect
our children will suffer. Our paper icon campaign,
which is being launched this May to celebrate Mother’s
Day, is one way that local merchants can help MADD
Kentucky continue to watch over the children across our
state who need our care.
What’s a paper icon? It’s a slip of paper that is emblematic of a cause, typically placed next to a cash register in
a retail establishment and sold as an impulse item. It gets
the community involved by inviting them to make small,
inexpensive point-of-sale donations to a worthy cause.
Donations are typically set at $1.00 – very affordable,
even in today’s economy. The buyer feels good when
leaving that store because they’ve taken part in something bigger than themselves. That retail establishment’s
public image is raised, too, because they are participating
in something important.
Help MADD Kentucky send a message to the community that Every Child Deserves a Designated Driver – get your retail store, company or organization
involved with MADD Kentucky’s paper icon project this May.
