Hamilton named
new Library Director
Jeanne Hamilton, director of
Charleston Carnegie Public
Library in Charleston, IL, has
been hired as
the next director
of Bloomington
Public Library.
The Bloomington
Public Library
Board of Trustees
hired Hamilton
Jeanne
Hamilton
during a special
board meeting on
May 9. “The board was unanimous in its support of Jeanne
Hamilton as our next director,”
said Carol Koos, board president.
Hamilton has been director of the
Charleston Carnegie Public Library
for five years and served as director of the Helen Matthes Library
in Effingham, IL, prior to her move
to Charleston. She will begin her
work in Bloomington on June 1.
Terry Lindberg, retired McLean
County Administrator, will continue to serve as interim director
of the library until May 31.
During Hamilton’s eight years
working in library administration, she has focused on improving library services through the
implementation of fiscally sound
new ideas and the development
of strong staff teams. Under her
leadership, the Charleston library
expanded its open hours and
witnessed a 63 percent increase
in circulation to 94,000 items
annually. The Charleston library
serves a population of approximately 22,000.
Hamilton received both of her
degrees ─ Master of Library
Science and Bachelor of Science in Actuarial Science and
Finance ─ from the University of
Illinois. She also worked three
semesters in an adjunct faculty
role for the University of Illinois
Graduate School of Library and
Information Science.

Bloomington Public Library’s 2016 Summer Reading
Program – Read for the Win – begins Monday, June 6.
Each of the program’s roughly 8,000 participants will
receive a Reading Log which includes the program
description for their age group: children, teen or adult.
Through Sunday, August 7, participants will be able to
pick up their reading log at the library or at any of the
Bookmobile’s 48 stops. Additionally, participants will
have the option to print their reading logs from the
library’s website, BloomingtonLibrary.org.
At Bloomington Public Library, no participant in any age
group is assigned specific books to read. The purpose of
Summer Reading is to encourage reading for pleasure.
However, if you or your child would like suggestions,

library catalog and allows them
to see if a book they want is
available, put an item on hold,
view items checked out, view
fines, view a hold list, etc. It’s
really quite handy!
We want your email address.
The Library is able to automatically email hold notices and reminders about upcoming due dates to customers. To benefit from this
service, simply ask a staff member at any of our Service Desks or on the Bookmobile to add your valid email address to your account.

patrons another avenue toward continued
learning when the library is closed or when
a patron would rather tackle their continued
education from the comfort of their home.
Courses are offered in software, business,
creative skills, programming, resume writing,
photography, and much more. Just about
any sort of training that a person may need
can be found on Lynda.com.
Library staff members note that Lynda.com
is not offering college classes. The courses
aren’t going to take the place of a being

completion are awarded through Lynda.
com, but those are not certifications.
“The only field that offers actual certification
through Lynda.com is Project Management,
and that’s exciting,” said librarian Ali Bousquet, who noted that Lynda.com is approved
as a registered education provider by Project
Management Institute. “We have tons of
people who come to the Library looking for
specific PMP or PMBOK books (test prep
books for the Project Management or PMP/
PMI test and accreditation program), and our
copies are almost always checked out. But I
am now able to send those people to Lynda.
com to see if there is anything there that can
help them,” Bousquet added.
Patrons wishing to access Lynda.com start at
the Library’s website, bloomingtonlibrary.org.
They then click on the “Online Resources” link
which is located in the “Quick Links” box. In the
alphabetical listing tab, they will scroll down to
Lynda.com and click on the link. Once the person’s library card number and PIN have been
entered, they will create an account ─ which
only requires a name and e-mail address. Users
can then watch videos, create playlists, download course files, and bookmark pages.
Because Lynda.com is a product of LinkedIn,
when a person earns a completion certificate,
they have the option to add that information
to their LinkedIn profile. And while access to
the database typically costs subscribers at least
$19.99 per month, BPL’s subscription allows
those with a library card issued by Bloomington
Public Library to access Lynda’s content for free.
“Lynda.com is going to be a great asset for
those in search of lifelong learning and professional development,” Bousquet said.
Hamilton said, “In my experience at the Charleston Carnegie
Public Library and the Helen
Matthes Library, I have had the
opportunity to learn how to
maintain buildings and manage
building projects. Additionally,
I have experience working with
architects to develop building
design plans.”
According to Board of Trustees
President Carol Koos, Hamilton
was one of four candidates
the board seriously considered
to fill the vacancy left when
former library director Georgia
Bouda retired in December.
“With strong staff, board, and
community supporters, it is clear
that the Bloomington Public
Library has an exciting outlook
and I am thrilled to be a part of
that future.” Hamilton said.
Hamilton is active in the Illinois
Library Association where
she served on the executive
board and several committees.
She also served on the Illinois
Heartland Library System
Nomination Committee, and
she is currently President of
the Rotary Club of Charleston.
Hamilton grew up in Springfield, IL, and looks forward
to moving to the Twin Cities where her parents have
resided since 2003. She will be
relocating to the area with her
husband and their infant son.
