LONG SYNOPSIS NEIGHBORS tells the story of Maggie Jerritt, a quirky shut-in who spends her days watching television, eating snack cakes and creating strange art out of found objects. She survives on the weekly allowance her sister Sarah slips under her closed door. But when their mother becomes deathly ill, Sarah begs Maggie to emerge and visit their mother before it's too late. As desperate as Maggie is to be by her mother’s side, she is trapped by her agoraphobia and a debilitating sense of anxiety. One day, Lamay, a feisty transgendered woman in an abusive relationship, moves into the apartment next door. Suddenly, Maggie finds that the drama that unfolds outside her window is far more compelling than her beloved television shows and a great distraction from the drama of her own life. Intrigued by Lamay and her boyfriend, Mark, Maggie is drawn into a magical new friendship. This unlikely relationship transforms them both, giving Maggie the strength to leave her home, and Lamay the will to leave her boyfriend. SHORT SYNOPSIS NEIGHBORS tells the story of Maggie Jerritt, a quirky shut-in who is unable to leave her home even to visit her dying mother. But when Lamay, a feisty transgendered woman in an abusive relationship, moves into the apartment next door, the two begin a strange friendship that allows them both to break free. WWW.NEIGHBORSTHEFILM.COM NEIGHBORS DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT TAGLINE Someone’s always watching CONCEPT NEIGHBORS is a psychological drama that celebrates the beauty of unlikely friendships. DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT Many people live in loneliness and isolation due to agoraphobia – the fear of public places. Inspired by true stories, this short film began when a friend of ours, who was once active and vibrant, began to fear leaving her home. Suddenly, a person who was a very special part of our lives became reclusive and incommunicative with the rest of the world. As we began to do research for the film we found that a startling number of people we knew had been impacted by this disorder – friends, colleagues, collaborators who had spent months, sometimes years, of their lives trapped in their homes, or watched as people they loved battled this phobia. At the same time, both Jonathan Pope Evans (my co-writer) and I, were touched by those around us who were struggling with their gender identity. We were horrified to learn that the average life expectancy for transgendered men and women is 23 due to the high rate of murder and suicide. We wanted to tell a story that explored these issues surrounding our lives. This story speaks to me because I believe in the transformative power of relationships. Often the most beautiful stories are those where people discover that someone very different from themselves can have the most profound impact on their lives. This has always been true in my own life, and I am thrilled to be able to share this story with you.
