LOGLINE
When Maggie, a quirky shut-in, meets her feisty new neighbor, Lamay, a transgendered
woman in an abusive relationship, the two begin a strange friendship that allows them
both to break free.
LONG SYNOPSIS
NEIGHBORS tells the story of Maggie Jerritt, a quirky shut-in who spends her days
watching television, eating snack cakes and creating strange art out of found objects.
She survives on the weekly allowance her sister Sarah slips under her closed door. But
when their mother becomes deathly ill, Sarah begs Maggie to emerge and visit their
mother before it's too late. As desperate as Maggie is to be by her mother’s side, she is
trapped by her agoraphobia and a debilitating sense of anxiety.
One day, Lamay, a feisty transgendered woman in an abusive relationship, moves into
the apartment next door. Suddenly, Maggie finds that the drama that unfolds outside
her window is far more compelling than her beloved television shows and a great
distraction from the drama of her own life. Intrigued by Lamay and her boyfriend, Mark,
Maggie is drawn into a magical new friendship. This unlikely relationship transforms
them both, giving Maggie the strength to leave her home, and Lamay the will to leave
her boyfriend.
SHORT SYNOPSIS
NEIGHBORS tells the story of Maggie Jerritt, a quirky shut-in who is unable to leave
her home even to visit her dying mother. But when Lamay, a feisty transgendered
woman in an abusive relationship, moves into the apartment next door, the two begin a
strange friendship that allows them both to break free.

DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT
TAGLINE
Someone’s always watching
CONCEPT
NEIGHBORS is a psychological drama that celebrates the
beauty of unlikely friendships.
DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT
Many people live in loneliness and isolation due to agoraphobia
– the fear of public places. Inspired by true stories, this short
film began when a friend of ours, who was once active and
vibrant, began to fear leaving her home. Suddenly, a person
who was a very special part of our lives became reclusive and
incommunicative with the rest of the world. As we began to do
research for the film we found that a startling number of people
we knew had been impacted by this disorder – friends,
colleagues, collaborators who had spent months, sometimes
years, of their lives trapped in their homes, or watched as
people they loved battled this phobia.
At the same time, both Jonathan Pope Evans (my co-writer)
and I, were touched by those around us who were struggling
with their gender identity. We were horrified to learn that the
average life expectancy for transgendered men and women is
23 due to the high rate of murder and suicide. We wanted to
tell a story that explored these issues surrounding our lives.
This story speaks to me because I believe in the transformative
power of relationships. Often the most beautiful stories are
those where people discover that someone very different from
themselves can have the most profound impact on their lives.
This has always been true in my own life, and I am thrilled to
be able to share this story with you.
NEIGHBORS was made through AFI’s prestigious Directing
Workshop for Women and it was a great honor to be a part of
this program.

her dream of fostering change through narrative films and documentary projects with a
strong social message. Her credits include DIRT! THE MOVIE, a feature length awardwinning film about the life beneath our feet, which premiered at Sundance in 2009, and
CHICAS: SEAN DISCRETAS, a feature length documentary that follows three
courageous streetwalkers who fight for their rights as women in poverty-stricken
Argentina. She is currently in production on a film about the life and art of famed
Cuban-American artist, Jorge Pardo, and in pre-production on MOUTON VILLAGE, a
broad comedy about clashing cultures. She has trained in both the independent and the
studio realm, including Dreamworks and for Dan Jinks and Bruce Cohen’s production
company at Paramount Pictures. Previously, Eleonore practiced international civil
litigation and human rights law in New York City and Paris, and worked as a public
policy advocate in Argentina, Kenya and Uganda. In 2007, she was awarded the
prestigious Debra Hill Fellowship for promising, young female filmmakers for her work
in film. That accolade came on the heels of Eleonore’s intense training at the University
of Southern California’s Peter Stark Producer Program and a law degree from Columbia

project headlined the Showcase in 2010. Her work was selected for the Kodak
Scholarship Program and she received the highest honor from a Philanthropy Program
for a documentary she made on disadvantaged children. Polly has spent the last two
years being mentored by Wally Pfister, ASC. She worked alongside him during
“Inception” and continues to work with him on other projects.
REGGIE SPANGLER editor

ABC, CBS, HBO, Lifetime, Spike TV, and Discovery to name a few. In 2007 he was

Arizona. Reggie earned an MFA in Film Directing from CalArts, and is a member of the
Motion Picture Editors Guild as well as the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences.
Reggie recently completed his own short film MADE WITH LOVE which competed and
won the Art House Co-op 30 Second Film Festival.
GREG NICOLETT original music
Greg’s music has enlivened the drama in some of today’s most popular television shows,
commercials, and indie films. For the 2011 mobster feature CHICAGO OVERCOAT
(starring Frank Vincent, Katherine Narducci, Armand Assante) Greg uniquely combines
elements of spaghetti westerns and noir, while his scores for the CW’s web spin offs
SMALLVILLE: THE VENGEANCE CHRONICLES (2007) and THE VAMPIRE
DIARIES: A DARKER TRUTH (2009) preserve the tone of the series while expanding
on the thematic content. In 2010, Greg’s music was heard nationally for several Old
Navy and Microsoft ad campaigns. His score for Keegan Wilcox’s PORCELAIN
UNICORN helped it win “Grand Prize” in Ridley Scott’s Parallel Lines competition. In
2004, Greg composed an electronica driven score for Rene Alberta’s short film ABOVE
AND BENEATH, which screened at the 2005 Sundance and Toronto film festivals.
Other recent projects include additional music for the romantic comedy BARRY
MUNDAY (with Chloë Sevigny, Patrick Wilson, Judy Greer) orchestrations for the
horror feature 30 DAYS OF NIGHT: DARK DAY, and a live orchestral score for a new
adaptation of Ray Bradbury’s chilling thriller THE SMALL ASSASSIN. In his spare time,
Greg plays trombone with the LA based band Killsonic and is a proud member of the
Young Winos LA Chapter.

“I was moved by the relationship portrayed in “Neighbors” by Rachel Goldberg, as the
life of Maggie, a shut in with overwhelming social anxieties is examined. She has
crippling fears, which prohibit her from leaving the house, yet she is able to form a lifechanging relationship with a neighbor, which allows us all to recognize the power of
human connection.”
