Along with the beautiful dogwoods, tulip and redbud trees, the Tyler Azaleas will be in full bloom soon. This also is a sign that spring fever is just a breath away. Fortunately, all students and staff have a built in remedy for our spring fever with Spring Break March 1115th and a Teacher work day / Student Holiday on March 18th. When students and staff return on March 19th we will all need to be on our A-Game as spring testing is quickly approaching. Please review the list of up and coming events for Moore and make special notes for the following spring testing dates: April 2nd April 2nd April 3rd April 3rd April 23rd April 24th April 24th April 25th STAAR Writing Test Part 1—7th Grade STAAR Math Test—8th Grade STAAR Writing Test Part 2—7th Grade STAAR Reading Test—8th Grade STAAR Math Test—6-7th Grades STAAR Reading Test—6-7th Grades STAAR Science Test—8th Grade STAAR Social Studies Test—8th Grade The 5th six weeks is always exciting as each day adds another motivating announcement on the success students are achieving in their school work and extra-curricular events. April and May are generally the months when UIL competitions are held and our awards celebrations are scheduled. We look forward to sharing with you the great news about our student’s accomplishments. We are excited about the momentum that we see building with our students and are confident that our students will be successful on their STAAR testing days and upcoming competitions as we complete another record year here at Moore. Let’s enjoy watching our mustangs perform and celebrate with each of them as they Achieve their Dreams for this School Year. The best way to describe Mathcounts is a WICKED hard series of timed math tests. Representing Moore were 8th graders, Jacob Mackey, Mary Claire Neal, Kushan Gupta, Lali Quiballo, Stevie Tave and Michael Walker. Also representing were 7th graders Jose Perez, Ethan Oliver Kyle Ferrer, Kelly Ring and Alex Wick. Out of these 11 individuals four are chosen to compete as a team, Moore's team consisted of Lali Quiballo, Mary Claire Neal, Kushan Gupta and Jacob Mackey. The team placed 4th overall. Way to go Mustangs! Each student also competes individually and we have some notable mentions. This year the top nine individuals advanced to state. Jacob Mackey ranked 16th overall in the competition. Michael Walker placed 10th in the overall competition and missed advancing by only two points. The Mustang Page 3 PTA News I love Spring Break! This is such a busy time of year. I really appreciate a week off to catch our collective breath. I hope you have a relaxing time with your family. Your kids have been working hard. We all saw evidence of that at the Exhibit Fair. I am continually amazed at the students of Moore Middle School. Speaking of the Exhibit Fair… we had a great turnout for both the hamburger supper and the exhibit fair. My thanks to Dee Dee Keener and Cindy Lancaster for arranging a wonderful hamburger dinner from Outback Steakhouse. Following the supper, we had a HUGELY successful silent auction. The silent auction is our biggest fundraising event of the year. Stephanie McClintock and Kim Holley outdid themselves this year. Big thanks to all who solicited donations and to everyone who bid on an item(s). I am really excited about the two things I purchased. Did you know that the average facility age for middle schools in Tyler, Texas is 57 years old? Did you know that Moore MST has the more portable classrooms than any other school in TISD? These are just a couple of facts I have learned recently because of all of the buzz about the upcoming bond election. The Moore MST PTA has voted to endorse the bond that was called for by the TISD school board. You will have an opportunity to make your voice heard with regard to education in Tyler on May 11 in the upcoming election. Please exercise your right to vote! If you are not a registered voter, you can register at the Smith County Elections Administration office located at 200 E. Ferguson Suite #500. The deadline to register and be able to vote in this important election is April 11. A few quick facts about the bond: If passed the bond provides for several new middle school facilities (one of which is our very own Moore MST) two remodels at the elementary level and a new Career and Technology Center for students at the high school level. The new facilities would open Fall of 2015, and construction would take place with no increase to current taxes. The new Moore would have a centrally located Administration office, secure access to the school, brand new classrooms, a cafeteria, a library/media center, a fine arts building, a new gym, and a new football field. These facts (along with many more) are available on the Tyler ISD website. Take the time to get educated on the bond, and then get out and cast your ballot on May 11. Laura Watson PTA President Let’s Go to the Movies! M oore students recently participated in a writing contest with a Valentine’s theme. The Moore office challenged students to write a one page paper on the topic, “What Makes My Teacher One of a Kind”. TLC Fundraising, a community sponsor to Moore sponsored free movie tickets to be given away to the winning teacher and to the winning student of the contest. The assignment to write about their first period teacher was intended to give every teacher on campus the opportunity to have at least one student affirm the great job they are doing in the classroom. The Moore office and administration volunteered to read and judge the papers composed by the students. The winning composition was selected and pair of movie tickets was awarded to student Priscilla Lopez for writing about her math teacher Lauren Yeargin. Individual classrooms in each grade level were also rewarded for their participation. The classrooms with the most student participation in the contest were Mrs. Cunningham’s class in 6th grade, Mrs. Mimm’s class in 7th grade and Mrs. McCullough’s class in 8th grade. Mrs. Scudder’s cross grade level deaf education class was also recognized. Moore’s teachers are “one of a kind” and the students did a beautiful job of making all teachers and staff feel appreciated for the job they do every day. UIL MODERN ORATORY UIL Modern Oratory is a challenging contest in which students had to choose from five current topics, research extensively, write an original speech that presents both sides of a controversial issue, and then choose a position and defend it. Students are not permitted the use of ANY NOTES in their 3-6 minute speeches! Many students attempted this contest of skill and endurance, but few followed through to the finish. There is a MANDATORY meeting that at least one parent/guardian will need to attend in order for you to audition. That meeting will be Tuesday, March 19 at 5:00pm OR Wednesday, March 20 at 4:30pm. You only need to attend one day, but if a parent does not come on one of those meeting days, you will be unable to audition. This is to avoid any confusion about rehearsal times, dates, etc. A rehearsal schedule and parent contracts will be passed out that day. Don’t get worried or frustrated. Reread the question to make sure you understand it and then try to solve it the best way you know how. 8. Multiple Choice Questions—Start by crossing off the answers that couldn’t be right. Then spend your time focusing on the possible correct choices before selecting your answer. 9. Neatness Counts!—If your 4s look like 9s, it could be a problem. Be sure your writing is legible and that you erase your mistakes. For bubble test, fill in the spaces carefully. 10. I’m Done!—Not so fast—when you complete the last item on the test, remember you are not done yet. First, check the clock and go back to review your answers, making sure that you didn’t make any careless mistakes. Breathe! The Mustang Non-Profit Org.
