Potentate’s Message
Hello Nobles!
I wish to thank all the Nobles for electing me as Potentate
of Tripoli for 2015. It is a great honor and comes with much
history and responsibility. I hope that I can live up to your
expectations. We had a great installation with about 160 at
the dinner. It was a fantastic evening and thanks to everyone
that helped with this event.
I wish to congratulate Past Potentate Rick Loch for a very
successful year. Under his leadership, Tripoli had a great year
and we all had a great time. Be sure to thank him for his
service when you see him.
We have a very strong corps of Divan officers to serve you
during 2015. We have some new members of the team and
others who served for a number of years. We also have a
mixture of ages as well as years of membership. I believe this
will be a benefit in the decisions made to move Tripoli into
the future. We cannot forget about our heritage and history
but we do have to look forward to possible changes as we
move into the future. We will need the commitment of all the
Nobles to make Tripoli succeed and thrive as we move into
the 21st century. In the words of Vince Lombardi, “The
achievements of an organization are the results of a combined
effort of each individual.”
Over the past few years, Tripoli has responded to our
financial difficulties with great
success. I am pleased to report
that we are once again in a strong
financial position. This by no
means allows us to ignore our
financial situation or to act
irresponsibly in our spending. It
will allow us to concentrate on our next major concern –
Membership.
Membership is an area we must all work together on to
win. We all hear every year that we need to get new
members. This is extremely important but not the total
answer. Yes, we need new members but we cannot forget
about our current members in the pursuit of new members.
We need to work on retention of our current members,
inviting new members, and in the process encourage
members who have left to rejoin. Noble Don Adams, our
membership chairman, has been working on a presentation
and is starting to visit lodges with a brief message on
becoming a Shrine Mason. It is a very short and low key
presentation to introduce our Masonic Brothers to the Shrine.
Please contact the office or Noble Don and make
arrangements for us to visit your Lodge.
Let’s have some fun this year. We have a Winter Beach

Just the Facts...
The Banquet and Catering report for December is
complete. We had 11 non-Shrine events for the month
of December with a net profit of $6,501.29. We had 9
Shrine related events with a net profit of $1,704.85.
Our total net profit for the month was $8,206.14. We
would like to thank Larry Wegner and the bartenders
for the job they accomplished in raising a substantial
portion of that revenue in banquet and catering this
year.
The books for the year 2014 are closed.
Congratulations to our Treasurer John Bugajski for the
outstanding job of working within our budget. With
John at the controls our fiscal responsibility has been
exceptional. We had a net operating income for the
year of $99,654.38. In addition we have set up a
reserve account to be used for the remodeling of our
hall for banquet and catering. We deposited $25,000.00
into this account from this income leaving a final net
operating income of $74,654.38. Doug Winter
presented the budget at our stated meeting and it was
approved. This will allow us to deposit another
$25,000.00 in this reserve account, which was part of
this budget, so we now have $50,000.00 for this
project.
The balance in the Wells Fargo Investment account
is $460,028.19. We had investment income for the year
of $29,041.00
The 2015 budget reports the circus revenue in a
different manner. We now receive an annual guarantee
of $230,000.00 for the next five years. This would be
paid for the summer and winter circuses. Bill
Cunningham, the circus operator, will have complete
control of those operations for the next five years. We
will be paid our guarantee regardless of any unforeseen
circumstances which includes inclement weather. In
addition, we can receive additional revenues from the
circus for such items as noble ticket sales, our family
circus nights and other noble related events. We will
allow the nobles to purchase circus books that have a
value of $38.00 for the sum of $20.00. This would
include 2 circus tickets per book. These tickets can be

Are You Ready
for the Circus?
By Chaplain John
I recently was channel-hopping when I came across a
1962 film called Billy Rose’s JUMBO starring Doris Day,
Jimmy Durante, Stephen Boyd and Martha Raye. The
story was about a debt-ridden circus saved by a wellmeaning but inept publicity man named Pop Wonder. It
was a delightful combination of comedy, musical and
romance and I enjoyed it very much. It brought back
childhood memories of my brothers and I enjoying the
arrival and setting up of the Barnum & Bailey circus at
State Fair Park in West Allis. A train would arrive near the
Fair and the elephants were used to offload the wagons
and the big tent and move them into the fair grounds. We
would stay up all night to see the elephants do their work.
Then, of course, we just HAD to see the circus! Such
great memories of good times. As Shrine-Masons we
have the same opportunity to see our circus come to town
for our 77th Annual Shrine Circus at the Arena from
February 26th, 27th, 28th and March 1st. There will be a
Family Night on Friday, the 27th and Saturday, the 28th.
See the January Tattler for further details. Walk-ons will
be done ONLY at the evening performances. Let us join
in the fun and fellowship of our circus. I promise you will
have a roaring good time! “A happy heart makes the face
cheerful…” Proverbs 15:13a “May the righteous be glad
and rejoice before God; may they be happy and joyful.”
Psalm 68: 3 “I know that there is nothing better than to be
happy and do good while they live. That everyone may
eat and drink, and find satisfaction in all his toil—this is
the gift of God.” Ecclesiastes 3:12-13 Look forward to
seeing all those bright and beaming little faces who are so
happy to be at the Shrine circus! See you at the 2015
Shrine Circus!

Party planned for February 21 with music by Fred Beyer.
Also save the date of April 11 for a Mystery Theater Dinner.
This will be a Friends night so be sure to invite all you
Masonic friends and others. We can have some fun, show off
our beautiful building, and introduce both our Masonic and
Shrine heritage to our guests. We also will be hosting the
Hillbilly National Convention this August. There is still time
for all to join this organization whose main function is to
support the hospital transportation fund. We also are
planning a joint Ceremonial wit Beja Shrine at Tripoli on
November 8.
The end of this month is once again CIRCUS TIME. The
dates for this year’s circus are February 26 thru March 1.
Please help in supporting this event; it is our major fund raiser
for the year. See the offers for Family Night events 2/27 and

Hello Hillbillies and Hillbilly Gals too,
I want to say thank you for the great year we had in 2014.
It was due to all the effort put in by you the members. By
attending the events and fundraising events, the crippled and
burn children are the ones that benefited and will continue to
benefit with all of your efforts and working with Clan #50. It
would be very nice to see some of the Hillbillies who have
not attended our meetings or functions to start joining us in
all the fun times we have. Then they will be able to really
relate to what it is to be a Shrine Hillbilly and be able to say
how proud you are to be truly being involved in supporting
the Hospitals and Transportation Funds. I look forward to
seeing each of you in the coming year at some or at least 1 of
our functions. We invite everyone to get involved with Clan
#50 and make it another great year. Our lifetime
membership fee is only $40 and we do not charge any dues.
You never have to attend one of our scheduled meetings, but
we encourage you to attend your Blue Lodge as often as you
can. If you can fit it in feel free to stop by our meetings,
board meetings or fundraising events. The love and personal
satisfaction of helping the Children will be reward above the
little amount it costs you to belong. I ask each of you to do
what you can.

2/28 as well as some special ticket discount offers available
this year. These events will benefit Tripoli directly and allow
us to realize moneys over and about our contractual
guarantees.
Once again, thank you to everyone for allowing me serve
a Tripoli this year. I will try to do my best as I know all of the
Divan officers and Chief Aide Neil Laack will do as well. Let
us continue to build on our recent successes and make Tripoli
a fun place to be. It will take all of us; working together to
win and I know that is the desire of every Tripoli Noble.
Remember in 2015 its:
Family – Friendship – Fraternity
Yours in the Faith,
Peter F Hennig, Potentate, Tripoli Shriners
This is it. The year that Clan #50 hosts the National
Convention. We are looking for help and support at all of our
functions from the Members of Tripoli Shrine Center. There
are committee’s set up to run the show but without your help
it won’t be as great an event as it could be. As you know we
hold expenses down to a minimum, therefore we will need
donations for our hospitality room. If you can donate a bottle
of booze, camel’s milk, soda or snacks etc it would be greatly
appreciated. Also remember to save your pennies for Miss
Piggy. She loves pennies, nickels and dimes or just a little
pocket change will do and will go a long way when properly
used. Miss Piggy is located in the Hillbilly Room in the
basement of Tripoli Shrine Center. All of these funds will go
to the Transportation Fund for Tripoli. The Convention is on
schedule for Aug 19-23, 2015 and will be a great event
thanks to Tom Schlicht and his committee of Noble
Hillbillies. With over189 Clans and 90,000 Hillbilly
members in the Country, we are one of the largest and most
active Clans, Thanks to our Hillbillies at Tripoli Shrine.
On another subject, we have a serious problem with
membership. We must make membership our number one
priority. Not only in the Shrine but in the Blue Lodge’s,
without new members in the Blue Lodge’s, all other Masonic
functions will fail including Scottish Rite, York Rite and
Shriner’s. I ask all Hillbilly’s to take this challenging
problem seriously and be on the look-out for new members.
Next meeting for general membership is March 18, 2015
(lite food at 6pm, meeting at 7pm) and we will finalize
committee’s for the convention and cover all other
Convention aspects. I encourage all members to attend this
very important meetings.

Stated Meeting January 14, 2015
The meeting was opened in due form by Ill. Potentate
Peter F. Hennig @ 7:00 PM. All Officers present Except
Treasurer John Bugajski.
The flag of the United States of America was presented by
the Legion of Honor and the Potentate led the Pledge of
Allegiance.
Chaplain John Bennethum offered an opening prayer.
Introductions: Nick Sobon, who was obligated in a Cold
Sands Ceremony last month was in attendance tonight. Five
Past Potentates were introduced along with Unit heads,
Shrine Club Presidents and Emeriti Nobles.
Minutes: The Ill. Sir called on Recorder Jim Christie for
the reading of the minutes of our December Meeting. Jim
moved to approve the minutes as printed in the Tattler. The
motion was seconded and approved.
We had no new petitions tonight. Jim read the list of 7
requests for demit along with reasons for same. All these
Nobles being “Clear-on-the-Books”, their demits were
granted.
Recorder Jim then gave his Annual Report on
Membership.
We began 2014 with 1,142 members, had created only 6
new Nobles in 2014, restored 7, had 16 demits and 32
suspensions, one resignation, 4 associates dropped and 49
deaths. That leaves us at 1,056 members starting 2015.
Chief Rabban Doug Winter stood in for John Bugajski and
gave the Treasurer’s Annual Report. Doug commented that
2014 was a very good year financially. We do need to address
credit card fees as they apply to rentals of the building. We
must also address our extremely high utility bills. As to the
balance sheet, Doug, again, commented that it “is very
positive”. Doug moved for the adoption of both reports. The
motions were seconded and both approved. Doug next
presented the proposed 2015 budget as it had been presented
in December and moved to accept. The motion was seconded
8
and approved by a large margin.
Black Camel: HP&P Keith Sargeant read the list of three
deaths since our last Stated Meeting. Chaplain John
Bennethum offered a prayer for those departed Nobles.
Sick and Visitation: John noted the list on tables and
welcomed Captain of the Guard Rick Kingstad back after his
heart attack and subsequent stents. Rick is doing well.
There were no reports from the Trustees nor from Scimitar
tonight.
Old Business: The Potentate called on Jim Mahaney for a
circus report. Jim started by asking “where will you buy your
circus tickets” and then went on to explain option 1) Circus
Daddy Book will offer 5 general admission tickets for $50.00
(a $95.00 value). And option 2) which is a circus program
which includes 2 vouchers for general admission tickets at a
total cost of $20.00 (a $42.00 value). Profit from these ticket
sales go directly to Tripoli and will add to our Guarantee from
Circus Producer.
The Friday morning “school show” is being handled
directly by Agente Entertainment thru their office BUT We
still want ushers for this show. Please volunteer for this and
the Saturday morning show with wheel chairs.
Patrick Jackson followed Jim with a report on Sportsman’s
Night. Patrick also explained that, through the Masonic Angel
Fund, we had sent 20 drivers and 66 hospital patients to the
hockey game.
Events: Ill. Sir Pete Hennig noted upcoming parties, etc.,
Ice Fishing Jamboree, Beach Party February 21st, Mystery
Dinner Theater April 11th, Ladies Night March 11th
Bell Ringing: Frank Foti promised not to bug us again
until October but presented his report. Tripoli Clubs and Units
raised $3,359.93 for the Salvation Army. Dale Middleman
(Dale’s of Milwaukee) raised another $5,000.00 to make a
total of $8,359.93 from Tripoli Shriners.

Circus Time!
IT’S CIRCUS TIME! Tripoli’s 77th Shrine Circus is
just around the corner. By the time you receive your copy
of this month’s Tattler the circus will be less than a month
away. The circus starts Thursday evening on February the
26th, and runs through Sunday evening March 1st.
There will be some new acts as well as some very
popular acts we’ve enjoyed in the past. There will be
Nobility walk-a-rounds for the evening and afternoon
shows, and we’d like YOU to be there. We need Tripoli
Nobility presence to show Milwaukee what we’re all
about! Bring your fez and join us!
There are several “new” features for our 77th annual
circus. We will now receive a guaranteed amount rather
than a percentage of the circus income. Also Tripoli will
receive 100% from sales generated from our Circus
Daddy venture, family nights, posters and the souvenir
program/ticket offers. However, there are expenses
involved such as advertising, printing costs, family nights
as well as food and room rental for our ever-popular
“Hospitality Room”. This is why and where we need your
input.
When you receive your Circus Daddy letter we need
you to respond with your financial assistance. Likewise
we need your help in selling the souvenir program/tickets.
This can be a moneymaker for unit, shrine clubs, lodges
or any group who wants to earn some money.
See you at the Circus!
Jim Mahaney, Circus Director
Park at the Shrine
Center for the CIRCUS!
There are numerous parking facilities downtown near
the UWM Panther Arena (formerly the US Cellular
Arena). However, as a service to those attending the
Circus, free parking is available at the Tripoli Shrine
Center located at 3000 W. Wisconsin Ave. (north side of
street).
After parking, you will board a school bus (free) that
will take you and your guests to the front door of the
Arena. Following the show, these specially marked
“Shrine Circus” buses will pick you up at the same
location and return you to the Shrine Center. These buses
go to and from the Shrine Center to the Arena every 20
minutes or so; thus allowing you a more flexible schedule
either before or after the Circus!
HAVE FUN & ENJOY!

The Tripoli Shrine clowns wish a HAPPY NEW YEAR to
everyone! Happy Birthdays to two of our Joeys, Brian
“Wacko” Swartwout and John “Bumps” Lemberger. - - And
by the way Congratulations to Frank “Sparkles” McNabb
and his Lady Grace on their 65th Wedding Anniversary!
The Clowns kept busy last year with a lot of parades and
community festivals. Our newer members really stepped up
to help out. KUDOS JOEYS!
We had our election of officers last month. Larry Pfeiffer
is our new Director and Larry “Chappie” Feinstein is once
again our Secretary/Treasurer. Gerry “Candy” Hersh was
elected as our 2015 President and will assume that position
as soon as he performs his Clown Skit.
Our new Director Larry “Hatman” Pfeiffer demitted to
Tripoli from Zor Temple several years ago, and while at Zor
he served several terms as Director of their Clown Unit. In
2016 “Hatman will be president of the Kenosha Shrine Club.
We hope to see Ron “Dandy” Danielson around. “Dandy
was our Clown Director for 4 years and did a great job! Word
has it that we might see “Dandy” and his Lady Mary at a
performance or two at the Circus.
The Clowns are preparing for the Shrine Circus next
month. They are dusting off their oversized clown shoes and
spiffing up their clown suits. We’ve been told they’ll be
shooting balloons into the audience area before each
performance.
The Black Camel visited one of our long time Joeys in
November. Ed “Simbo” Heffner was Born to Life Eternal on
November the 26th. Ed was known for his clowning
throughout Milwaukee and Tripoli Shrine. He was a
Director of the Clown Unit and posed for the 1986 Great
Circus Parade poster and the
poster is now a collector’s item.
“Simbo” was very active in the
Clown Unit, and recently changed
his clown name to “Kopper Ed”.
Always willing to go that extra
mile for anyone who asked, Ed
touched all of us in some way.
We’ll miss you Ed.

being installed as the Director do the Director Staff!
We want to thank Greg Barg for an excellent job that he
did while Director.
I was sorry to see such a small turnout of our members of
the Director Staff at the Potentate's installation. We have to
remember that we have to support and participate at all
Shrine events. That is what our unit stands for. Mark your
calendars for the Shrine Circus where we will again be
selling rides. The dates are February 26 through March 1.
Let's have a good turnout of members.

It is circus time Feb 27th 28th & March 1st so members of
the animal unit bring your costumes along so we can walk

March 14 is our first parade--the St. Patrick's day parade.
Parade starts at 3:30 p.m. We must be there by 2:30 p.m.

upgraded at reasonable cost and all this money goes to
Tripoli. This would be in addition to any money
received from our guarantee. Make sure that you
Nobles support the circus through our shrine center so
that we increase our revenues.
Nobles help us with advertising in our Tattler.
Contact friends and family and suggest Tattler
advertising to them. This is a good source of revenue.
Remember submit any questions or concerns that
you have to our committee at the main office. We
appreciate any suggestions or recommendations from
our members about the operation of the finance
committee. Thank you to those nobles that have already
done so.
Doug Jaskolski, Provost Chief – 414-380-3584
Once again our newly elected are promoting the Unit to
our new Nobles, explaining that to get a good understanding
of being a Noble, a person should be a member of a Unit to
find out the ins and outs of the Temple workings. Doug
keeps mentioning that a group of Nobles need to become
mentors to the new Nobles.
Our installation of officers for the Provost Unit was
shared with the installation of Whitnall Park Shrine Club.
The food was good, the friendship was renewed and the
Ladies outstanding. The officers were installed with
Potentate Pete Hennig presiding, along with his Marshal.
The best part was that he installed the correct officers to the
correct Club or Unit. Well done again.
Our next Unit meeting will be February 25, 2015.
Members, turn out and back your new officers. Remember,
they can only be as good as you demand of your officers.
Remember, the only thing in life is given by one person only
if you reach out to him. P.S. – Remember your dues.
See you in church, Jerry Stein, Secretary

Scimitar Foundation
Report
The Scimitar Foundation’s major fundraiser,
“Sportsman’s Night,” is coming up. Please support us by
volunteering to help or donating an auction item.
We also want to correct a slight error in the last Tattler
report regarding our request for donations. We ask all
units to consider making a donation to the Foundation for
up-coming projects to restore the Temple to its former
brilliance.
Private donations are also greatly
appreciated—remember that we are a 501(c)(3) so your
donation is tax deductible.
If you have any input or questions regarding projects
being undertaken by the Scimitar Foundation, board
members are always willing to review and discuss them
with you. Thank you in advance for your continued
support.

Melham parlor. We meet every month, except July and
August. Member guests and spouses are encouraged to join
us for lunch before our meetings. Come early to socialize
and do some shopping for talent table items, books and
novelties. Yes, I said shopping and everyone is welcome.
Lunch is served at 12:00 noon, followed by our meeting.
Contact Nancy Cole (262) 786-9509 if you need candies,
nuts or knives this month. She will make arrangements to
get them to you.
Our next meeting is Wednesday, February 18th. For the
love of a child, someone special in your life, or just the
person sitting next to you let’s consider wearing something
red to the meeting in celebration of LOVE. Invite someone
to join you for the day and call your reservation in to Mary
Ann Garber at (414) 352-2527. Any member can be added
to the permanent list, please remember to call when you
will be absent.
Your tax deductible memorials, gifts or honorariums for
special occasions should be sent to Memorial Chairman

Do you have something for the talent table perhaps for
Easter, St Patty’s Day or Mothers day? Bring these items
in to Tracey Brooks at our meeting. She is running our
talent/sales table and will be happy to receive these items!
Baby dolls and trucks are still high on the list for toys
needed. Elastic waist shorts any size at Twin cities just
cannot seem to get ahead on a good supply in the cabinet of
shorts. Purchased or made from scratch, pattern available
if you know how to sew.
See you at the next meeting.
For the love of a child!
