of Europe 2013 NEWSLETTER 1
Dear all, Thank you for deciding to visit this year's
Heart of Europe, the 10th anniversary of the
event. The idea behind the tournament is
that the city of Olomouc, located in the Czech
Republic, Moravia province, lies both
geographically and culturally in the centre of
Europe. Our country has always attempted to
be a bridge between the west and the east,
divided by many (sometimes literal) walls, an
island of peace and democracy, surrounded
by conflict and oppressive rule. Even today,
we wish to promote free speech and rational
debate, instead of violence, as constructive
means of solving disagreements between
nations. We are excited that you, too, wish to
become a part of this endeavour.
This event is being organised by the Czech
debate society, o. s., which is nongovernmental,
non-profit
organisation,
operating in all regions of the Czech Republic
with tradition since 2004. HOEDT is a
brainchild of this year's chief judge - John L.
Wickham from Britain, who has been a
teacher of history at the local Hejcin high
school. It is this school and many of its
students from years past, who also helped
the tournament get started and keep on
going.
What makes Heart of Europe happen this
time? The answer is easy - hard work that
goes on behind the scenes in preparation for
the week of debates. For that, the members
of the Organizing Committee are to be
thanked, for it is them who ensures the
smooth running of the competition. We hope
that you will enjoy the tournament.
We aim to make your week-long stay as
comfortable as possible. We will be providing
you with quality accommodation at the
University of Palacky, which can be found
right next to the competition venue, Faculty
of Science. You will also be in the good hands
of Delegates Care Staff, volunteers from all
over the Czech Republic, who will attend to
your every need throughout the competition.
More information about accommodation and
accessories is provided in subsequent
chapter.
We are looking forward to meeting you in
Olomouc and wish you all the best for the
Heart of Europe International Debating
Tournament 2012.
Jakub Kadlec
Chief Organiser
BLOOD DONATION INITIATIVE Introducing this mascot and promoting blood giving all around the world is another significant
milestone for the Czech Debate Society and the tournament itself. It is in line with the
tournament’s mission to develop cooperation among the
youth and to foster cultural and social understanding
and exchange. Herr Heart represents the sharpness,
love for freedom and effort to help and to improve the
neighbourhood, which is essential for debaters, as well
as the hospitality and openness of organisers and the
tournament itself.

when are you planning to arrive in Olomouc (presumably the main railway station), so that one of

RULES The debating format used at this tournament is called WS – World Style. If you are uncertain as to
what exactly it entails, you can find the complete rules of the format and all the other necessary
information at this web address: http://www.schoolsdebate.com/guides.asp All the regulations and guidelines of the tournament are available here http://www.heart-of-europe.org/web/regs_guidelines
MOTIONS There will be two kinds of debates during the tournament – prepared debates and the so called
impromptu debates. More details can be found at this web address: http://www.heart-ofeurope.org/web/motions_2013. Allocation of motions to rounds is mentioned in the schedule.
JUDGES If you are participating as a Judge, there are some things you need to know in advance, mainly in
regards to the initial compulsory briefing and training lecture, where all questions will be
answered. All the necessary details can be found at this web address: http://www.heart-ofeurope.org/web/judges_info Please go through all the documents there, to be familiar with them
at the lecture.
INTERNATIONAL FRIENDSHIP NIGHT – WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW This is the main social event of the tournament, and that is why it deserves special attention. The
best part of it is that it is you, the participants, who makes it happen and creates the program. It
is a great opportunity for everyone to present their country and their culture. It is up to you, if you
focus on history, cuisine and beverages, art, religion or any other area, which is significant where
you come from. We encourage you to bring some samples and examples with you, which you can
share with the rest of the world – the more each of you bring, the better the night will be for
everyone. Naturally, it would be wise to also bring your national flag, so that you can visually
represent your country wherever you go, not only at the international friendship night.

TALENT COMPETITION We have been recently thinking about what opportunities for cultural exchange, entertainment and
personal improvement among the debaters we have overlooked so far. And since one of our main
judges is the Mr. World from Canada, it suddenly occurred to us - debating is not the only talent
that any debater possesses. Many of us also dabble in acting, singing, dancing, poetry and
numerous other artistic activities. Soon after we had this epiphany, several members of our Chief
Adjudicator Panel and Organizing Committee got immediately superexcited about the prospect of a
Heart of Europe talent show, and so it was settled. From this year forward, one of the main social
events of the tournament will be a showcase of the participants' artistic or otherwise interesting
talents. Maybe with a little hint of competition, but mainly to help integrate debating with the rest
of the popular culture in the minds of our participants, and through our communication channels,
for all people everywhere. So if you are planning on visiting us in Olomouc in the summer, feel
free to amaze us, and maybe also get a little famous in the process.
