Foreword
Welcome to the latest edition of Glassworld,
the global newsletter from Ferro.
W
elcome to the latest edition of Glass World, the global newsletter from Ferro. This issue carries a
brand new look for 2009. First published in 1994, Glass World has successfully shared Ferro news,
developments and innovations with you, our customers. The new look Glassworld will reach an even
wider audience of business leaders and decisions makers and will focus upon our strengths at Ferro –
innovation and service – and will be distributed in both hard copy and electronic versions across the world.
At Ferro, we are most proud of our position as global leaders in the supply of performance colors and coatings for
the glass industry. We are passionate about delivering innovative products and solutions for an ever changing and
demanding world and will showcase real examples of this within each edition of Glass World. As the market for
added value glass coatings evolves, we are more and more focussing to provide performance based on function as
well as pure decoration and aesthetics. This issue contains articles on innovations such as laser marking, s1de ONE
flat glass decoration and Nanofilm protective coatings, three important new product launches from Ferro. We also
showcase how we are working with our customers in the automotive, building and container glass industries to help
you to succeed.
As the global recession takes hold, we recognise that many of our customers face challenging times ahead. My team
at Ferro Glass Systems (GS) will continue to work with you, to have a physical presence within your plants, and to
help you to be innovative, to reach new markets and to look beyond the current economic uncertainties to develop
and grow. Our first priority will continue to be with you and to provide the technical service and support that you
have come to expect from us.
For our part, Ferro Glass Systems is working harder than ever in response to the global economic situation. We have,
at certain plants across the world, reduced manufacturing hours and have had to cut costs. Many of you will be
aware that it has been necessary to reorganise and rationalise our manufacturing operations worldwide. In Europe,
our Limoges plant will close by the end of 2010, and production transferred to our other GS European sites. We
appreciate your support as we work through this programme and are committed to ensuring minimal effects on our
customer service.
We have seen certain commodity prices fall and we are committed to passing these savings onto our customers
wherever possible.
One thing that will not change is our constant investment in new product development – the hallmark of the
Ferro brand.
I hope that you will find Glass World to be both informative and useful to you and your business. If you have any
comments or would like further information on any of the topics covered, please feel free to contact me, or a
member of the Ferro Glass Systems management team.
On behalf of the entire Ferro Glass Systems team may I thank you for your custom and wish you well for the
challenging times ahead.

FERRO UNVEILS
NANOFILM
PROTECTIVE FILM
Technology that you can’t see and with
widespread applications across every market
served by ferro glass systems.
Over the years, Ferro has expanded
its product portfolio to add products
with functional properties as well as
pure decoration. Black obscuration
bands for automotive glass were an
early example, designed to protect the
adhesive used to fix the glass to the car
from degrading on exposure to UV-light.
Other typical examples would be UVA
forehearth colors to extend shelf life of
cosmetics and beers packaged in flint
bottles, or AR-coatings for solar panels.
Now, Ferro’s functional product
portfolio is further strengthened
through an agreement with Nanofilm
Ltd. to market their unique range of
ultra-thin (10-9m) nano-films and
nano-coatings for application in a
diverse range of glass and ceramic
markets. Based near Cleveland, Ohio,
USA, Nanofilm is a leader in nanofilm
technology and self-assembling
thin films for a variety of substrates
and surfaces. Their technology and
expertise compliments Ferro’s own core
technologies and global market reach.
4
A WORLD BUILT ON INNOVATION AND STYLE
The coatings are easy to apply, cure
rapidly at ambient temperature within
minutes to impart a hard, mechanically
and chemically durable surface which is
covalently bonded to the substrate. The
coatings are built from a molecular level
and formulations and properties of the
coatings can be modified to fit specific
end market applications; they are
suitable for either internal or external
use. The nano-dimensional coatings
provide protective qualities, durability,
corrosion and scratch resistance, are
resistant to soiling, difficult to mark and
easy to clean (EZC).
Furthermore, the underlying optical
properties of the glass remain totally
unaffected, which for example, makes for
great compatibility with AR-coated glass
parts and structured surfaces such as
sand-blasted glass.
The new coatings can benefit the
production and quality of a wide range
of display glass applications, from
tablet PC’s and TV screens to touchscreens, showrooms, shop-fronts and
“the real benefit to our
customers of this exciting
new technology is that the
glass looks and performs
as if it had no protective
coating at all”
picture framing. Nanofilm also has
potential to deliver surface protection
and EZC properties to architectural
and transportation glass, furniture,
glass appliances and shower panels.
We have also demonstrated significant
improvements in mar resistance and
dishwasher durability in tableware
applications.
Speaking about the launch of Nanofilm,
Phil Maitland, Head of Business
Development for Glass Systems
comments: “ the real benefit to our
customers of this exciting technology
is that the glass looks the same
but performs much better. We see
tremendous potential to add value to
our own product development and
design efforts in many of the glass
markets that we serve, as well as
leading us into new areas such as solar ”

McDONALDS
GLASS GIVEAWAY
McDonalds is arguably one of the worlds most
recognised brands and their sales promotions
are heavily advertised throughout the world.
F
erro is delighted to be associated
with a recent sales promotion
managed by the world famous
McDonald’s franchise.
McDonald’s are arguably one of the
world’s most recognised brands and their
sales promotions are heavily advertised
throughout the world.
A recent promotion – which has already
been rolled out in several countries
across Europe - has seen the gift of a
unique Coca-Cola glass to any customer
purchasing a large Big Mac meal.
The limited edition glasses, which have
been manufactured in 2 different shapes
and 6 unique colorways, have been
6
supplied by Arc International, France
and Pasabahce Cam, Turkey -the world’s
largest manufacturers of drinking glasses.
The initial launch of limited edition
Coca-Cola glasses were manufactured in
France and designed by Vibrandt Form,
part of the UK’s 1HQ design agency
– the design was based on the original
Coke contour glass bottle and the initial
run was for 14 MM glasses in 6 colors.
The design builds on Coca-Cola’s ‘The
Coke Side of Life’ marketing platform
that appears in a number of TV adverts
More recently, the glass manufacturers
combined with The Coca-Cola Company
and McDonald’s to create a glass shape
based on the iconic Coke drinks cans.
A WORLD BUILT ON INNOVATION AND STYLE
Both companies called on Ferro’s
forehearth coloring technology and turned
to Ferro to help create and match the 6
special colors to McDonald’s specifications.
Forehearth color was the perfect option
as the technology allowed these special
colors to be produced cost-effectively,
which would not have been possible by
coloration in the glass tank. The colors
could be run in short campaigns, which
also helped with initial product approval.
Change-over times from color to color are
very short, compared to changing colors in
the tank. These process advantages mean
that the glass companies can react fast,
with product development cycle times
significantly shortened.
The latest colors produced by Pasabahce
Cam in the can-shape design are grey,
green, blue, yellow, pink and purple. They
were run at a pull rate of 25-30 tonnes/
day, with feed rates varying from 0.5%
to 3%. Typical color changeover time is
8 hours, even for the deepest tones. Even
if such special colors could be produced
in the tank, it could take upto 72 hours
to change colors, longer to turn back
to flint. This makes the cost of coloring
extremely competitive for both the glass
manufacturer and the end customer.
The success of the promotion is such
that McDonald’s are commissioning
further new colors, which Ferro is
currently developing, and production will
be expanded.
Erkan Dulgeroglu, Managing Director of
Ferer, Ferro’s exclusive representative in
Turkey enthuses: “ Pasabahce is part of
the Sise Cam Group of glass companies,
our strategic partner. We have worked
with Sise Cam for more than 15 years
and helped with the installation of
Ferro’s forehearth color technology in the
early 1990’s. The success of the original
installation at their Kirklarelli tableware
plant encouraged them to expand the
process to their plants in Eskisehir, also
for tableware, and in Anadolu Cam for
coloration of beverage bottles, including
wines, spirits and soft drinks like Coke.
The process gives them a level of
production flexibility that would otherwise
be impossible. They can react fast and
cost-effectively and produce colors that
would otherwise not be possible. Now, Sise
Cam is expanding into new market areas,
such as Russia and Bulgaria, and Ferro’s
AUTOMOTIVE
GLASS

The Auto Industry has been hit
as hard as any during the current
economic downturn, and the
difficulties encountered by the
top auto manufacturers are well
documented.
forehearth color process is included
more or less as standard in their factory
expansion programs. Ruscam in the
Bashkortostan Region of Russia is just
the latest of their plants to start up with
forehearth color for the production of
blue Baltika lager bottles “
Ferro’s focus during this turbulent
time for the car Industry has been
to direct efforts toward both cost
control and cost reduction. Cost
control in our own plants - but
especially our focus has been on
product development.
Ferro pioneered forehearth coloring and
patented the technology in the 1970’s,
and It is the strengths emphasised by
Erkan that are driving more and more
installations to be built around the world.
Not only for drinking glasses and other
glass table-top products but also for
cosmetics, perfumes and drinks packaging,
as well as for architectural glass such as
building blocks and rolled patterned glass.
Here the emphasis has been to
match performance of our products
currently regarded as Industry
leading, using lower cost materials or
lower cost formulations. A measure
of success has been achieved with
low-Bismuth blacks and work is
continuing. We expect to be able to
bring more new products to market
during the second half of 2009.
HEALTH & SAFETY MATTERS
In recent years, customers of Ferro Glass
Systems have sought the reassurance
that all Ferro coatings and inks can be
kind to the environment, as well as
being in compliance with safe use in the
workplace. In response Ferro has moved
to remove heavy metals such as lead
and cadmium from its products and
processes, with both the Washington,
USA and Tsukuba, Japan plants now
totally lead free. European plants are now
largely lead-free with leaded products
- where still specified by customers
- being processed in totally segregated
process areas and plants to guarantee no
contamination of lead-free products.
This rationalisation process, costing
millions of dollars, has taken over 10
years to implement. Ferro was the very
first manufacturer of glass coatings
and inks to make the move from
leaded to unleaded products in the mid
1990’s. Phase one was to establish the
technologies and production processes
that could deliver products with the same
levels of performance without the use of
lead or cadmium. Phase two involved the
global marketing of lead free products
and demonstrating to customers in all
markets that these new products were a
real cost-effective alternative. Finally, and
the third phase is to remove all leaded
products from the Ferro portfolio.
Ferro continues to invest heavily in
reducing the impact its manufacturing
processes have on the global and local
environments.

Ferro continues to unveil new
products and applications
S1de ONE – Durable lead-free decorations for the external
surface of spandrel glass. Giving architects the opportunity
to design more iconic buildings.
For many years, Ferro has been supplying
lead-free enamels for decorating
architectural glass. However, traditionally
these colors are applied to the inside
surface of the glass, with the inherent
limitations this presents on design, as
the decoration is viewed through not on
the glass.
As innovators in glass decoration, Ferro
wanted to provide architects and the
Industry in general with enhanced design
and creativity options. The result is s1de
ONE, the application of color, design
effects and textures to the outside
surface of exterior architectural glass.
S1de ONE includes a unique glass
formula with exceptional chemical,
UV and weather resistance properties,
making suitable the application of colors
to the outside surface of buildings.

LASER MARKING
There is a basic range of 11 colors,
which are intermixable to give a wide
range of color possibilities. Additionally
the range includes special effects, like
etch and metallics.
Durable colors replicating effects such as
wood, stone, marble and metal are now
within reach for the architectural designer.
Most importantly s1de ONE enables the
creation of different surface textures,
e.g. matt and semi-matt, in combination
with the natural transparency of glass.
With glass the most important of
building materials, Ferro’s full range of
decoration solutions is helping
to create an infinite range of
surface coatings and styles for the
Flat Glass market.

WHY LASER MARKING?
GS operates a fast growing laser marking
(bonding) business. The laser bonding
process was developed and patented
by Ferro about 10 years ago and is
being increasingly adopted around the
world for Industrial applications. The
process provides a positive mark that
is both mechanically and chemically
durable and can be used on glass for
both exterior and interior applications.
The mark can be applied digitally and is
fused instantly to the glass without the
need for additional processing.
The process is extremely cost efficient
and lends itself to automation and
integration into industrial processes.
Laser bonding is a perfect candidate
to apply permanent identification and
quality marks for easy trace-ability of
flat or bent glass used in automotive,
architectural, appliance or other
markets.
Other applications on glass include
graduation marks on laboratory
glassware, and personalised badges, logos
and volume marks on glass tumblers,
tableware and advertising glass.
Furthermore, complex shapes and
surfaces that can not be readily
decorated with conventional printing
methods can be laser marked, which
makes it perfect for complicated
shapes encountered in cosmetics and
perfumes bottles and the like. Internal
surfaces can also be marked more
easily with a laser bonding machine.
Ferro makes the move to Russia
Ferro has always sought to get close to
the markets that it serves, providing a real
local presence and a high level of technical
service.
With the expanding market in Russia, we
have been working over recent years to
gradually step up our ability to offer a fast
and flexible customer service for the glass
market in this region.
Ferro initially moved into St Petersburg in
1998 with a representative office servicing
Porcelain Enamel clients in Russia and the
CIS, notably Ukraine, Belarus and Georgia.
Goods were shipped direct from our main
production plants in Europe but Ferro
Saint Petersburg (FSP) was now able to
offer technical service and ‘real time’ local
language support.
In 2002 a full branch office was created,
enabling FSP to store materials and trade
in local currency. This represented a step
change improvement in local service,
enabling customers to purchase smaller
10
quantities, receive faster deliveries ex
FSP warehouse and thereby potentially
improve their cash flow position.
When GS tapped into this capability
in 2005, the office was expanded and
specialist Russian glass service engineers
were hired to support GS activities. Local
storage facilities for GS products have
been created to enable fast delivery, even
of small quantities, with payment in
roubles. Additionally, our Russian staff are
on hand to offer technical and commercial
support to all our glass customers, and to
co-ordinate with Ferro management and
staff at our other sites.
Now, effective July 2009, we are delighted
to announce the incorporation of a
wholly owned Ferro Russian legal entity
“Ferro Special Materials LLC”. This further
demonstration of Ferro’s commitment
to our customers in the region will help
GS bring our latest product offerings
and technologies to all glass markets.
A WORLD BUILT ON INNOVATION AND STYLE
We will continue to deliver technical
and commercial support day-in, day-out.
