I think we are doing pretty awesome
considering we are a specialty chapter
that meets once a year and the local
chapter I belong to doesn’t have this
many members! Great job guys!!!
PREZ SEZ
Hello GMC Truck Chapter Members!
I hope all is well with each of you
that belong to this chapter. We are fine
here in “hotter than hell” Oklahoma
just trying to stay cool and not melt!
It amazes me how the earlier generations survived this weather. I remember growing up that it wasn’t until high
school that I moved into the first place
I lived that had air conditioning. Now
I can’t stand to be without it! And I am
sure others are in the same boat.
Thanks Ron for taking care of the finances, Paul for his hard work with the
website, newsletter and POCI convention responsibilities!
David Bailey,
GTC Prez.
I am sorry I was not able to attend the
Co-Vention this year I really wanted
to but my wife had a medical situation
come up and so we canceled our plans
for Dayton. I sincerely hope the ones
that did make it had a good time. It has
been awhile since I have attended a
convention but I am sure this year was
a good one. Looking forward to next
year - and it is a lot closer to me!! Yay!

Steve Cook’s ‘57
GMC Suburban
received a “Most
Outstanding”
award at the CoVention in the
GMC Truck class.
With that being said please put Wichita, Kansas on your calendar for June
2014! Being more in the middle of the
USA maybe we’ll have a pretty good
crowd? Be sure to get those GMC’s
ready to show off!
Way to go Steve and Larry!
Below:

I understand we took in some new
members and I welcome each of you
to our chapter. Thanks for taking time
out of your schedules to participate in
the GMC Truck Chapter with us.

POCI Convention

We have some great GMCs featured this
month. Congratulations to the 2013 CoVention award winners and thanks to
Paul Prinzing and Walter Heiniger for
sharing their stories and photos.

I encourage other members to submit
items for upcoming issues. I for one really enjoy getting to know members and
their vehicles better - a challenge for the
specialty chapters since we are spread
out all over the place!
Call the POCI Club Office at (877)
368-3454 for more details.
Make plans for the 2014 POCI Convention - to be held in Wichita, Kansas. Call

2013 Co-Vention
Steve Cook’s 1957 GMC
Suburban received the
“Most Outstanding” award
for the GMC Truck class in
Dayton.
This very nice
original 80s GMC
Pick Up was also
at the Co-Vention.
Frank Gilchrist from Texas brought his 1971 GMC Jimmy to the
Co-Vention - what an awesome truck! He has the honor of being
the first POCI member to enter a GMC Truck into our Points
Judging process, and he received Silver in the Modified Class.

Prinzing’s Prize Caballero
This is a 1983 GMC Caballero that I picked up in July of 2012. As far back as I
can remember, I’ve been fascinated by the car-bodied pickups. Even while a kid
doing model cars and mainly Pontiac models, I remember doing an El Camino
and a Ranchero.
I’ve spotted many of these type vehicles over the years, but this is one of the few
GMC versions I’ve actually seen. It was on the side of the road in a section of the
county that I usually don’t frequent that often. When I first drove by, I just gave
it a quick glance. When I saw the GMC across the tailgate, I had to turn around
and check it out.
Over the years my bow tie friends have always given me a rough time about my
Pontiacs and GMCs being nothing more than fancied up Chevys, with many of
the vehicles actually coming off the same assembly line. Well, that maybe true,
but the upgrades that the Pontiacs and GMCs have are what make the difference
for me. I found that if I want parts for the thing, I have better success doing a
search for El Camino than doing a search for Caballero.
When trying to research the numbers of
these vehicles I find various numbers at
various sources. But it appears this Caballero is one of about 2000 some produced in 1983 while that same year there
were over 22,000 El Caminos made.

This truck has a 305 V8, power steering, power brakes, cruise, A/C and an AM/
FM radio.
Since I’ve had these photos taken, I’ve had installed a fiberglass tonneau cover for
the bed that is painted black to match the truck.

Story and photos by Walter Heiniger
I’m the proud owner of this
1941 GMC C.O.E. 1 1/2–ton
panel truck. It started life as an
Army radio communication truck.
It pulled a trailer with a generator unit
to supply power for the radio equipment.
Somewhere along the way it was turned into a camper and used for hunting. It
has a stove, sink and gun cabinet and a table that folds into a bed. This all needs
to be redone… someday.
The door on the right side of the truck opens so you can get into the camper,
there is a set of steps that hang on the inside of the door by some pins. You lift
them off the door, and another set of pins line up with the holes in the floor so
you can enter the camper.
The truck is 13’ long and 9’ tall. The seats have also been completely redone
(frames and all), in Cardinal Red.
I first saw the Jimmy in the early 80s and thought it was cool. But I was into
1960s Chevy and GMC pick ups at the time. Mostly a 1963 GMC short narrow
box, 2-wheel drive pick up. Well, the ’41 GMC disappeared, then in 2010 a
friend of mine bought some property near my home. The place was full of cool
junk. I went to check it out and there it was again – the ’41 GMC C.O.E. Love
at 2nd sight! By then I was into pre-war trucks. I asked if it was for sale. He
told me it was already sold. Oh well, darn anyway!
Page 11
A couple of weeks later I ran into my
friend again. He said when the guy
who bought the ’41 came to get it,
he couldn’t get it on his trailer because the rear wheels locked up. He
got mad and said he didn’t want the
truck anymore. Lucky me! We made
a deal and it’s been fun every since.
I had the truck painted by a good
friend of mine (Rick Stricklin from
Deary, Idaho). He did a great job as
you can see from the pictures I sent.
I picked silver and red because I
thought it would look like a train
when it was coming down the road
at you. Everyone says it looks like an
armored car. I can see that. I put 1959
Cadillac taillights up on the antenna
towers just above the windshield. On
each corner and behind the doors I
Page 12
continued on page 13
put marble reflectors – these
are period correct. On each
headlight is an air raid light,
original equipment.
Well, that’s it – thanks and
I’m looking forward the next
magazine!
Welcome to the GMC Truck
Chapter Walter. That’s a
“way-cool” C.O.E. Jimmy!
Thanks for sharing the story
and photos. Keep us posted
on any further upgrades you
do. It would be great to see
this at a POCI convention
- maybe when we get one
scheduled in the Western U.S.

One thing is for sure - GMCs worked hard back in the day! Here’s a
