Houston Stock Show Wrap Up SHS Senior Completes Special Memorial For Eagle Scout Project
PRIDE Photographer *Makayla Love
Lindsey Lamkin placed 4th in the OPB division
and Austin Lamkin placed 1st in his class in the
swine division. Congratulations Lamkin Family!
Callie Criswell received 5th place with her Hampshire
at the Houston Livestock Show. Congratulations Callie!
Shallowater
senior,
Wes
Jackson, not only put many
hours and hard work into his
Eagle Scout project, but he
put an abundance of heart
and soul into the project too.
Jackson felt led to create a
special and moving memorial
in front of Shallowater High
School recognizing and remembering two very special members of the Class of 2014, Loran Coats and Garrett Hacker.
Jackson states, “I’m not looking for gratitude in any way.
I just did something that I felt
needed to be done and I think
that God just added that little
extra encouragement of earning my Eagle at the same time.”
Jackson set out to begin his
project by acquiring approval
from the local Boy Scout council, and obtaining donations
to fulfill the projects funding.
Jackson was able to have
all parts of the project donated except for the rock
engraving, which he is
still raising money for.
Completing the project places
Jackson very close to obtaining his Eagle, but also serves
many purposes for the com-
munity and school. As the trees
grow, they will provide a shady
spot for students, but more
importantly, it will provide a
memorial of classmates lost.
The two trees planted are both
Cleveland-Select
Flowering
Pears, which will make a beautiful addition to the SHS campus.
Jackson hopes that the memorial will be a reflection for those
students leaving the SHS parking lot to drive safely. Jackson
states, “If the caution the memorial causes is enough to save
just one person, it will have
served more of a purpose than
I could ever have hoped for.”

Shallowater High School Student’s Brilliance, Hard Work Earns Trip To International Science Fair
PRIDE Journalist *Zeke Kollman
Alberto Garcia
is a champion of local,
state, and national
science fairs. He has
received what can
only be alluded to as a
plethora of honors and
awards for his project,
which includes an in-
tegrated helmet and
pad system to help
reduce football injuries, mainly those injuries associated with
the whiplash motion
of high school football’s most notorious
tackles. When asked
what his achievements meant to him,
he responded, “It is
an honor to have excelled in the Science
Fair, and it has been a
great opportunity.” Alberto, or “Berto” as he
is known in the high
school, has advanced
not only to the local
science fair though
he has also elevated
his project to the international
science
fair, where his project
will compete against
the brightest minds
in the nation and the
world, and Berto is
high among them. His
other awards include;
third place overall in
the physical science
and mechanical and
electrical engineering,
the Air Force special
award, the Society
of American Military
Engineers
Award,
and the Texas Board
of Professional Engineers Future Engineer Award. “Alberto
has done a great job
at representing himself and Shallowater,” said Shallowater
High School teacher,
Leslie Griffis. He will
compete in the International Science Fair
in Pittsburg in May
2015, at the end of
this school year. So,
with Alberto’s many
accomplishments
there also comes a
sense of pride from
having him in Shallowater, we wish him
the best in the science
fair as well as all of
his future endeavors.

Friday, July 10thGolf Tournament
This down and dirty tidal wave of fun-in-the-sun featured 114 eight to twelve
player co-ed teams and more than 300 spectators in 2014! The tournament’s
purpose is to serve as a platform to raise awareness about the issue of student
dropout and the efforts of CIS to remove academic and non-academic barriers
to education that often influence a student’s decision to leave school. The goal
for 2015 is 120 teams and to raise $70,000 which will go towards sustaining
current CIS programs and expanding to new districts across the South Plains
region.
Registration is currently OPEN. Return your completed

THE
Shallowater Students Help Name Bluebonnet Medalist
For 35 years, The Texas
Bluebonnet Award (TBA)
reading program (established
in 1979) has encouraged
Texas children to read more
books, explore a variety of
current books, develop powers of discrimination, and
identify their favorite books.
Each year the Texas Library Association sponsors
this program for students
in grades three through six.
Through a long and hard process, a committee of librarians, administrators, teachers,
professors, and others select
twenty of the best new books
for kids and place the titles on
the Bluebonnet Master List.
If a student reads at least
five of the titles from the list,
he or she becomes eligible to
vote for their favorite among
the books they have read.
The votes from school
children across the state
are tabulated and the author of the work voted the
favorite is awarded the
Bluebonnet medal at the
Texas Library Association’s Spring Convention.
Shallowater 5th grade
Bluebonnet voters attended
a pizza party on February 26th to recognize the
students for their participation in this program.

her talent and creative

winter of 2014, more
than 300,000 students from the United
States, and some places
abroad, entered in the
National Scholastic Art
Contest for a trip to
New York, New York.
Out of those 300,000,
the field was narrowed
to 17,000 for the regional cut. Of those 17,000,
12 students were from
Shallowater ISD alone.
Of these few 17,000
only .07%, just 2,200,
are selected as National
Gold or Silver medalists. This is a very selective process and it is very
impressive that Miss
Hannah Ayers is included within this prestigious group of artists.

game falling on Good Friday, the Shallowater Fillies hosted their 1st Annual
Easter Egg Hunt after the
Varsity game on April 3.
All children ages 0-2nd
grade were invited to attend. Head Coach for the
Fillies, Sam Gillispie, states,
“The hunt was organized
to give back to the community of Shallowater.”
The Fillie softball players
provided eggs and filled them
with candy for the event. The
SHS art class also donated
eggs for the occasion that
they designed in class. The
Fillies softball players scattered the eggs in the outfield
and helped several of the
