5 Heimatstube Burg (Spreewald)
The 27m-high lookout tower on the fabled Schlossberg, a pre- and protohistoric rampart, was built in
1915–17. It offers a wide view of the Spreewald landscape, and as Burg’s landmark is a popular excursion
destination. The unique setting of the Schlossberg,
which is surrounded by enchanting natural scenery, is the scene for
exceptional events such as the “Spreewald Night of Fables” and
the ”Night of the Pumpkin Ghosts”, with impressive lighting and
pyrotechnical effects. (Apr.-Oct. daily 10 am to 6 pm)
Anyone who wants to escape from the pressures of
everyday life will find their nirvana in the health resort
of Burg (Spreewald), in the heart of the UNESCO Spreewald Biosphere Reserve. Visitors to the town appreciate
the magic of the Spreewald landscape, the myriad ways in which to
enjoy the fresh air, and the luxury of the slower pace of life. Burg is
a place in which to experience something special, to marvel at the
wonderful costumes and traditions, to learn about almost forgotten
handicrafts or to immerse oneself in the Spreewald’s legends during
the Spreewald Night of Fables at Whitsun.
“Dissen would just be a normal village if it weren’t
for the many stork nests, the beautiful halftimbered church and the marvellous local-history
museum ...”, wrote a journalist once. Dissen in fact
has other interesting sights, including Stary Lud – a
Slavic Middle Ages settlement, the Medicinal and Aromatic Plants
Garden, and the rehabilitated Spree flood-plain, which can also
be explored on guided bike tours.
At one time rivers served as roads in Burg,
and wooden boats were the main means of
transport. Today, a boat trip is a must for every
visitor. Besides the traditional punt, visitors can opt for all-year
themed boat trips that allow them to gain individual impressions
of the Spreewald – including on the sensory barge, a moonlight
boat trip, an exciting murder-mystery boat trip, and a fireside or
mulled-wine boat trip in the winter. The starting points for the
trips are the numerous ports and boathouses in Burg.
The Heimatstube Burg is a small but impressive museum
housed in a thatched log cabin typical of the Spreewald.
It provides an interesting insight into Burg, its history
and its legends, including church history, traditional
crafts, and Sorbian/Wendish customs and costumes. Another
permanent exhibition tells the story of the Spreewald narrow-gauge
railway. At the traditional Heimatstube Festival in September, tradition and history are brought to life in the Dreiseitenhof next to the
port. Open: Easter-Oct.: Wed-Sun 1 pm to 5 pm; Nov-Mar: Wed-Fri
noon to 4 pm.
Here the focus is firmly on relaxation: A cosy
atmosphere, modern ambience, warmth and
tranquillity ensure a relaxing stay at the heart of the UNESCO Spreewald Biosphere Reserve. The Spreewald Therme is a brine-thermal
bath complex as could only be found in the Spreewald. With its unique architecture, the complex easily blends into the landscape. The
valuable thermal brine arises from a depth of 1,350 meters directly
beneath it in Burg. The thermal, spa, sauna and fitness offers are all
authentically and unmistakably connected to the Spreewald.
Calau is the birthplace of the “Kalauer” or “pun”,
as in the 19th century the shoemakers who worked
here used to churn out jokes and delight in the ambiguity of words. These puns spread far and wide,
not least thanks to Ernst Dohm, who published them
in his satirical magazine “Kladderadatsch”. As a result, the term “Kalauer” established itself in the German language as the word for “pun” and remains in use today. The Calauer
Schusterjungen (Calau Cobbler Boys) invite you to explore the
town and follow in the footsteps of the former shoemakers.

11 Branitz Park and Castle

14 Cottbus Zoo
Once the main market place and originally surrounded with half-timbered houses, the Altmarkt
today is an impressive ensemble of Saxon-baroque
town houses and 18th-/19th-century traditional
eaved buildings. The Pharmacy Museum, housed
in the 400-year-old Löwenapotheke, features pharmacy fittings
from the 19th and 20th centuries, herb and poison chambers
and medicine cellars.
The Centre for Human Rights Cottbus runs the
memorial prison, which was formerly the largest
and most notorious political prison in East Germany.
The exhibition entitled “Checked clouds: Political
imprisonment in the Cottbus prison 1933 – 1989”
shows typical examples of political injustice from the time of
the Nazi reign of terror and the Communist dictatorship period,
including reconstructed cells from different decades.
Beneath the Schlossberg, the construction of
an artificial moat resulted in the creation of an
island, which still bears the name of Mühleninsel (Mill Island) today. In 1902/03, the first
power station in Cottbus was built on the site of the Stadtmühle,
which burnt down in 1882. In 1927/28, the diesel power plant
was built as a second power source. It is now used as a museum of
modern art and is therefore an industrial monument in active use.
In the 19th century, Prince Hermann von
Pückler-Muskau (1785-1871) created
a landscape park in the English style
in Branitz. The lake pyramid, called the Tumulus, is the prince’s
burial place. The late baroque castle, with its partially-original
interiors offers a largely authentic impression of princely life. The
restored salons rank among the finest examples of aristocratic
interior decoration.
20th century art-nouveau at its finest. Over 2,000
lamps burn in “Europe’s most beautiful artnouveau theatre”, built in 1908 on Schillerplatz,
giving it a very special flair. Guided tours and
the staged operas, ballets, dramas and concerts allow visitors to
experience its fabulous atmosphere and admire the jewel that the
citizens of Cottbus created at the heart of their city more than
100 years ago.
The towers, gates and guard houses mark out the
layout of the old town. The Münz and Spremberg towers stand at each end of the 1,200-m-long section of
the old fortifications. The Spremberg Tower, the city’s
landmark, was built in the 13th century and together
with the bastion and gatehouse forms the southern gate. The pinnacle crown was added in 1823-25 according to plans by Schinkel.
The Spremberg Tower is 31 metres high and is open to visitors.
More than 1,200 animals of 170 different species
and genera live in the magnificent parkland on the
Spree river. Elephants, tigers, leopards, lynx, coatis,
various monkeys, zebras, antelopes, ostriches,
tapirs and a wealth of wading birds and waterfowl
can all be seen here. Also included is a large domestic-animal
area with a petting zoo and several playgrounds. The park
railway has a stop right at the zoo.

16 Fürstlich Drehna Castle and Park
17 Lübbener Hain and the Liuba Stone
18 Lübben Castle Museum
19 Paul Gerhardt Church Lübben
Luckau, first mentioned in 1276, was from 1492 one
of the capitals of the Lower Lusatia. The city impresses
with its lovingly-restored old town and spacious gardens
and parks created for the 2000 State Horticultural Show.
The historical old town is surrounded by an 1800-mlong town wall. The Hausmann Tower with the George
Chapel, the classicist town hall, and town houses with
magnificently decorated renaissance gables and the Nikolai Church
all bear witness to the city’s eventful history, as does the Niederlausitz Museum.
Fürstlich Drehna is first mentioned in documents dating from 1477. Fürstlich Drehna is a
moated castle, and was originally a mediaeval
fortress that after 1560 was expanded into the
current four-wing building. The park was laid
out from 1807 onwards under P.J. Lenne. Expanded in 1877, in
1984 it was partially destroyed by lignite opencast mining. Today,
old and new have been successfully merged to create a horticultural show-piece.
This natural residual lowland forest in the town
centre is particularly impressive with its rare
vegetation and its around 220 oak trees up to
30 metres in height. It links Lübben’s different
neighbourhoods, and with its winding paths and beautiful spots
is an ideal place in which to stroll and linger. The Liuba Stone
marks the spot of a Slavic place of worship. At one time the
Wends worshipped the love goddess Liuba here beneath the
sacred oak by praying and making sacrifices to her.
The unusual mix of a mediaeval defence tower,
an imposing heraldic hall and a renaissance castle
give some indication as to the eventful history of
the complex. Inside, the old royal seat comes back to life thanks
to modern technology. Seeing, listening, touching and participating are all encouraged here. Visitors hear their ancestors speak
and listen to choral music, while the castle’s treasures lie at their
feet.
The steeple of the late Gothic hall church has welcomed visitors to the town for centuries, and its namesake is found in ecclesiastical and secular songbooks
worldwide. It has a lavish interior, with leaded windows by well-known contemporaries of Gerhardt that
incorporate hymn verses. Because of this, the church
is known internationally as the “Lied Church”. Visitors who
climb the tower with the tower keeper will learn more about the
church and enjoy a fantastic view.
21 SpreeLagune Lübben
Situated in the heart of the town, the island
beautifully combines trees, nature and culture.
Imaginative hiking trails and adventure areas
such as a labyrinth, sound garden, climbing pyramid and lawn terraces invite visitors to stroll and linger. For events
such as the Lübben Punt Nights or the Island Music Summer,
the Schlossinsel provides the perfect natural setting for open-air
music, dance, theatre and artistry.
Located between the Hauptspree and
the cycling and hiking trails on the Spreedamm, the SpreeLagune with its canoe resting place, bathing area,
climbing net bridge and raft crossing offers active recreation in and
on the water. The Schlossinsel and town centre can be reached in
just a few minutes via the longest wooden bridge in the Spreewald
(barrier-free). Swimming and sunbathing in the bathing area round
off the fun and relaxation to be had in the green town of Lübben.

26 Spreewelten Bad – experience and relaxation
The water playground with rafts, canals, excavators and a waterfall is a magnet for children. They
can be a pirate or, like Archimedes, pump water
using a screw, operate locks, or simply splash
around to their heart’s content – a true paradise for water lovers.
Parents and grandparents can admire the artworks made of mud
while relaxing on the greenery of the Schlossinsel.
South-east of Berlin is a unique landscape in Central Europe – the UNESCO Spreewald Biosphere
Reserve. The special attraction of the Spreewald
lies in its park-like landscape which is criss-crossed by numerous rivers and streams. The Spreewald is a habitat that is rich in flora and
fauna. In 1990 it was declared a biosphere reserve, and in 1991
was awarded UNESCO status.
Besides the nine-hectare-large landscaped park,
the Lübbenau castle complex comprises historical
buildings such as the castle, stables, orangery and
chancery. Since 1621, the estate has been owned by the Counts
von Lynar. The castle encompasses a hotel, vacation residence, a
restaurant, Rocco’s Linari Bar, and a park, and is now one of the
most popular destinations for day-trippers and vacationers who
wish to combine culture and nature.

ironworks and fishing museum next to the Peitz
ponds. The blast furnace hall and still partially functioning 19thcentury foundry plant are unique. On an area of around 200 m²
the fishing museum houses a diorama pond, an aquarium and
interesting exhibits from Peitz’s long-standing pond- and carp-fish
breeding industries. A nature trail through the pond area rounds
off the tourist offer.
The Erlebnispark Teichland has 18 varied attractions for
young and old. Fast-paced fun is guaranteed on the tubing
track with its 4 steep bends. Inside the Slavic godswood
stand colossal statues of gods that are sure to fascinate onlookers, while escaping from the 2000m²-large maze, located at the foot of the 50-m-high observation tower, is likely
to prove both challenging and exciting. The most popular attraction
is arguably the 900-metre-long summer toboggan run, with the
sky-dive and water-walking balls being the park’s latest attractions.
A wide range of events means there is always a reason to visit.

Here, wide corridors with green meadows are
interspersed with dense deciduous and pine forests.
The idyllic lakes are ideal for bathing and relaxing.
Accommodation is available in small guest houses,
apartments and camp sites. Visitors can enjoy the
local cuisine and have the locals tell them about the history of their
towns and villages. What makes the Märkische Heide and its small
villages so popular are the peace and tranquillity they offer, and the
friendliness of the local inhabitants who love their region dearly and
extend a warm welcome to visitors.
Straupitz is home to Europe’s last operating triple
windmill with a grinding mill, oil mill and sawmill.
Those who enter the mill will feel themselves
transported back in time one hundred years. The
wind- and engine-powered technology appears
miraculous to visitors,
who can watch the oil millers hard at work while listening
to their explanations. They can also taste the freshly-pressed
linseed oil.

Built on the site of a Slavic fortress, the fieldstone church (14th century) is one of the oldest
churches in the Lower Lusatia. Inside there is a
plain pulpit altar with a triumphal-arch motif and
a 17th-century life-size crucifix. In the southern
graveyard there are several restored sandstone tombs from the
18th/19th centuries.
The Unterspreewald is a place of natural authenticity, with dense green forests and small rivers
that are ideal for boating. Visitors can embark on
quiet and exciting boat trips from both villages. The history of
the Sorbian village Słopišća (Schlepzig) can be traced in the Farm
Museum, in the historic flour mill, in the half-timbered church,
in the village itself and in the Spreewald’s oldest inn, the “Zum
Unterspreewald”.
With Tropical Islands the dream of a
tropical island in the middle of Europe has
come true. The world’s largest self-supporting hall covers an area of 66,000 square metres and is a unique
holiday world – just 60 kilometres from Berlin. As of spring 2016,
Tropical Islands AMAZONIA’s all-year outdoor area, extending
across 35,000 square metres, will feature several swimming
pools, extensive sunbathing and sports areas, numerous water
attractions and recreational possibilities for the whole family.
The castle was built in 1540. Despite undergoing
extensive alterations over the centuries, many rooms
still have cross vaults. On a guided tour, visitors are
given a great deal of background information. The
knights’ hall with its murals and old Steinway piano
are particularly interesting. Since 2016, the coat-of-arms tree, the
paintings above the fireplace and the four seasons on the side walls
are on display again, having been restored to their former glory. The
coach house, now used as a tourist information centre, also forms
part of the castle ensemble.

What is primarily striking about the church is not
its size, even though it can hold 1,000 people, but
its design. This is down to its famous architect, Karl
Friedrich Schinkel, according to whose plans the
church was built between 1828 and 1832. Between 1655 and 1945, the Counts von Houwald owned the lordship
of Straupitz. The family was instrumental in the construction and
financing of the church. What makes the imposing yet unpretentious building unique is its tower.

family bed that really was big enough for an entire family, learn
fascinating details about historic crafts, or call in at the oldest
punt-maker in the Spreewald
In the hands-on areas in the open-air museum, the entire family
can try their hand at old-fashioned chores that used to be part
of everyday life, including washing sheets at the washbasin using
soap and a washboard. In the cowshed, town and city children
can have a go at milking, or walking in wooden clogs. Skippingropes and stilts were popular 100 years ago, and the hay-bed is
the perfect place for a lie-down.

The Raddusch Slavic Fort is a replica 9th/10th-century early-mediaeval fortress belonging to the Slavic
Lusizi tribe. Externally a faithful archaeological reconstruction, inside
it houses a fascinating exhibition on more than 12,000 years of
Lower Lusatia history. Finds from the Stone Age to the Middle Ages
are presented in a modern way. Special exhibitions, a large outside
