The crop, fuelled by 16 inches of rain, kept plugging the old John Deere binder, as it made sheaves and spit them on the ground. At one point the binder operators were stopped midway down the field unplugging the machine. Discouraging, unflattering words emerged from them. Jack Hartel of Mackenzie, B.C., a visitor while the binding was on, walked over and made a large stook of the wet oats sheaves. “This is fun,” said Hartel, who used to stook sheaves in his younger days in the Parkbeg district. The stooks of oats will be threshed at the annual threshing bee Saturday, Sept. 10 and Sunday, Sept. 11 by vintage threshing machines. The old time days farming demos kick off with an 8 a.m. pancake breakfast each day, followed by time to visit the museum’s buildings and a range of activities. The weekend is the last day of opening for this season. While harvesting demonstrations in mid-afternoon are the highlight, a tractor pull demonstration ends the afternoons. Ploughing the summer-fallow field will be done along with hand threshing, rope making, blacksmithing, quilting and square dancing. A vintage tractor/vehicle parade is at 1 p.m. daily. “Come and see how the pioneers farmed and have a good time,” says president Gord Ross. One new feature this year is renovation by volunteers of the old barber shop, spruced up with a new roof, new interior and uncluttering of the shop. And the new Leonard Fysh Pharmacy building is complete. A grand opening on Sunday at 2 p.m. will be held for the new Founders’ Building. The building, started last year by four of the remaining founders, will store their private collections, but is open to the public. The four remaining founders — Garry Davis, Andy Sentes, Dick and Charlie Meacher – are now three. Dick Meacher has passed away. A sign in tribute to him will be unveiled reading: Founders’ Garage, Dick Meacher, Proprietor. Saturday winds up with a 7 p.m. dance and jam session. Rev. Bob Langdon conducts the 11 a.m. Sunday service in the museum church. Dozens of kids between the ages of five and 13 recently spent the remainder of the summer holidays on the ice, alongside their hockey heroes. Once again, the Warriors held their annual Kids Camp from August 15-19. It proved to be a fun and educational experience for everyone. This is the fourth year for the camp. It is held in conjunction with Canadian Tire Jumpstart. Kids were broken up into three different age groupings: five to seven, eight to 10, and 11 to 13. Each group received two-and-a-half hours of on-ice instruction each day. Participants received a special Warriors hockey camp jersey and one adult and one child or student ticket to a Warriors game in 2016-17. “We’re just trying to have a little fun with Moose Jaw Minor Hockey,” said Mark O’Leary, assistant coach with the Warriors and on-ice instructor during the camp. “Every game when you look up in the stands, you can see a lot of these kids cheering us on. This is a good chance for our players to return the favour and help them out along the way.” It is a lot of fun but the kids also learn by participating in a variety of drills. Perhaps one day they, too, will follow in the footsteps of their idols and will get an opportunity to suit up for the Warriors. “It’s all about the basics, so things like passing, shooting, and skating. Those things never got old — even at our level we have to work on them at every practice,” said O’Leary. “We want them to have fun but at the end of the week we also want them to go back to their teams as a better player.” Some of the Warriors who participated in the camp include Zach Sawchenko, Brett Howden and Tanner Jeannot. Howden says the players enjoy the experience as much as the kids. “This is a lot of fun. You can see all the kids are having fun out there and they are learning lots,” said Howden. “I wish there was something like that when I was younger…I love being out on the ice with the kids. They love coming to our games and they give us lots of support, so it’s always nice to give back and have some fun.” “You get to see that youthful energy and enthusiasm that they come here with every day. It is not as serious as it is throughout the season and it really puts a smile on your face,” added O’Leary. “It goes back to the grassroots of the game and it is a lot of fun. We as a staff and as a team always have a good time doing this.” REFLECTIVE MOMENTS End-of-summer essay revisits good times If I were an elementary school student returning to the classroom for another round of educational activities, the teacher would likely assign me a report on what happened during the summer recess. Oh how I used to dread those assignments — other students always seemed to have so much more exciting times to discuss in their essays. And there was no way to embellish as in a small town, one’s business was never a secret. Now that the years have passed, I am excited to share stories of summer events, especially since for the past two years, none have involved surgeries or wayward sponges. And so, here is my report of my/our summer activities: New scenery is always exciting to view and we did our share of that beginning the second weekend in June, heading east to Manitoba and into Ontario, through forests and fields, stone and curves, cities, towns and rural roads (see previous column for all the driving details. In fact they died in 1922 when my Dad was just a lad. The graveyard is beside the highway and for the most part is well-kept. Even though we had never met, seeing the Roscoe and Herbie Steele names on either side of the monument was enough to make me a bit weepy, thinking of them as young men and remembering how my parents had visited the cemetery and sent donations for its upkeep. Their deaths were recorded as June 3, 1922 and there we were paying tribute on June 11, 2016, a span of 94 years in between. “We have lost and Heaven has gained, one of the best the world contained,” read the memorial tribute to each uncle. As we motored on, it wasn’t the amazing scenery that made the trip so special. It was the chance to see long-time friends that inspired us to make this voyage. The Walters’ Dinner Theatre near Woodstock was the main destination, it being operated by the Walters Family, whose acquaintance we first made in the mid-1980s when I hired the family band to perform at the Hometown Fair. Since then we have followed the family’s careers and occasionally visited with Darren Walters who was just a lad on that first visit to Moose Jaw. In Woodstock we met up with Stan and Carole Butler, now of Brockville, and formerly of Moose Jaw from 1974 to 1981. We have visited back and forth over the years and maintained a friendship with them and their children. They didn’t hesitate when we asked if they would like to spend time with us in Woodstock and take in the Walters’ Family concert in a converted barn dinner theatre. We spent plenty of time catching up during our time together and thankfully, they knew their way around the area so there was no more getting lost. We had a jovial time at the pre-concert dinner in the barn, meeting other patrons of the theatre before moving to our seats for the family’s concert. It was humbling to be recognized from the stage by Bradley and Darren Walters as being instrumental in helping the band’s career. After the event we were welcomed graciously into the family home where we visited more with mom Shirley, sister Kim and her son Skylar and other extended family. The end of the evening came far too soon, but it was a part of the trip we would not have wanted to miss. After saying a tearful farewell to The Butlers the next day in the hotel parking lot, we headed for Brampton and the home of another long-time musical friend. Fred White, formerly with The Carlton Showband and spouse Mary Ann White gave us precise directions to their home, and we spent three hours visiting, talking about his days on the road and discussing various other topics of interest to the four of us. Our time with them ended too soon for us, but home was calling and we had to hit the road for Saskatchewan. But the summer was just beginning: To be continued next week. Tom Jackson is a well-known Canadian actor and singer but he is also a philanthropist. For decades now, he has travelled the country to help raise funds for local food banks. In fact, he and his wife, Alison, have helped raise over $250 million for food banks and other agencies across Canada. Last year alone, Jackson raised approximately $50,000 for food banks in both Moose Jaw and Regina. He will be retuning to Moose Jaw on Sunday, December 4th for a pair of shows in support of the Moose Jaw & District Food Bank. The first show will be held at Zion United Church. It will be a concert featuring popular tunes. Funds raised by that performance will benefit the church. The Grant Hall show will be held afterwards in the hotel’s dining room and will feature a performance of “The Huron Carol.” The Huron Carol began as a benefit concert that has since evolved into a play. Other musicians, including country star and frequent Telemiracle performer, Beverley Mahood, participate in the show. It’s a show filled with music and heart. It is about a homeless man who was saved by two angels. That man is Jackson, who says his wife was one of those angels. “It’s the story of a homeless guy who works at a shelter, maybe he works at the food bank. He decided in his life that he needed to help somebody else because that was going to help him,” said Jackson. “Twenty-eight years ago I lived in a hole in the ground. I swore then and I swear now that I will never, ever go back…The creator sent me an angel, a guy who was worse off than me. If I hadn’t decided to help him, I wouldn’t be here today. I will never go back to that hole, except to do one thing and that is to help somebody.” Jackson never intended for this to become such a long-lasting project but he is happy to help those in need. “When I first started this project, it was the early days of food banks, sometime around 1988. They were not prominent back then. But I was volunteering and one of the organizations that I had linked up with needed Christmas hampers — they had a shortage of hampers the year before. That is how the idea of a concert came about; I had some musician friends in Toronto and we decided to stage this concert. We decided to call it the Huron Carol because we were in the traditional territory of the Huron Indians and there was a song called the Huron Carol. That is how it started,” explained Jackson. “Because I found a real comfort, for lack of a better word, working with food banks, it evolved. It was supposed to be a one-off event but then I went to Winnipeg the next year and there was an issue there where the food bank was not able to pay the rent for the building they were in. I said I have an idea, so let’s raise some money. A bunch of Winnipeg musicians and I all got together and once again we called it the Huron Carol.” More than anything, Jackson loves helping those in need. “There is one thing I cherish with this project; every night I watch people leave the hall a better person than they were when they came in. You know why? Because it would be a sacrilege for me not to pass on that gift I was given 28 years ago, and that is the gift of giving.” The Zion show will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. It will be Tom Jackson will return to Moose Jaw on December 4 for two shows. held in the church gymnasium, to create a more intimate atmosphere. That will be followed by the dinner show at the Grant Hall. More information is forthcoming. LOCALLY OWNED - LOCALLY OPERATED Are you getting prices from G3 Pasqua? Taylor said it all started with him and Chase Rysavy, guitarist, and just ran from there. “It started out with my best friend Chase and I, we were always in separate bands and eventually we were like, ‘hey wait a minute, why don’t we start something?’” said Taylor. From there, the two expanded to recruit Troy Waggoner as the band’s drummer. The recent addition of second guitarist Tyler Kidd is no surprise, said Taylor, as it was something the band had been talking about for a while. Highwind is best described as alternative rock, a mix of the group’s favorite bands: Brand New, Bright Eyes, Cursive, Manchester Orchestra. Each member brings their own unique influence to the band’s sound, to create their heavy, decisive down- Newest member Tyler (L) joins the band photo, next to Eric, Chase, and Troy. After releasing their EP two years ago, local four-piece rock band Highwind has yet another title to add to their credentials. Their first fulllength album Cellar Door is out, and it’s 10 tracks of anger and sadness, mingled into a story that flows from song to song. “It’s kind of a concept album and kind of not, in the sense that a lot of the songs relate to the same story. There’s a narrative to four of them and the other songs on it are just kind of like, have the same theme but didn’t exactly go into the same story. It’s heavy and sad,” said bassist Eric Taylor. The four songs make up the Divorcee series, and tell the story of a broken family from different perspectives. “The first one’s called ‘Empty House,’ and that’s from the husband’s perspective who’s an alcoholic and he’s lost his family but he’s beats and ever-changing tempo. “When I first met [Chase], he was playing in, like, screaming bands,” said Taylor. “Troy happened to be a metal drummer when we met him. I played in a lot of pop/punk bands. It was all these different genres that each of us had played, and we got together and made this.” Their first EP, We’re All Alone, was like dipping their toes into the pond, said Taylor. “[On] Cellar Door, we actually took a lot of time to think about, ‘how can this fit into this, and how can this flow?’ It’s not just like — we found our sound on Cellar Door, whereas We’re All Alone was just feeling the waters on what we wanted to be.” They recorded the album locally, tracking their instruments at Blue Door Recording in Regina, and vocals at Nebulus Entertainment here in Moose Jaw. “It was live off the floor, too, which was really cool,” said Taylor. “It was cool, we were all just in this one room together, and we just kind of played the songs like 10 times each and then took the best one of each song.” Cellar Door can be downloaded on Apple Music, Spotify, Google Play, iTunes, and Bandcamp, and the band always takes physical copies to their shows. Throngs of people gathered on one block for the third annual food festival – part of a summer four-in-one event. The day’s events included a car show, art show, food tasting and an evening street dance. The town has several art galleries. Jane Bueckert of Eyebrow was featured artist in one gallery. The car show drew about 70 cars with a good attendance from just across the Alberta border in Medicine Hat. Some car show highlights for us were a 1943 Army jeep, still in running order, a 1926 Essex car, souped up as a hot-rodder, and a battered green 1940s half ton truck, once used for custom hauling in Gull Lake. A red 1950s convertible with a boom box blaring tunes from that era drew interest. “Brings back a lot of memories,” said one visitor. The black box camera on the rear seat had younger folks asking what it was. The car show was located on grass in the Jasper Centre museum grounds, about one block from the food festival tents. Visitors to the food tents passed by the historic 1909 St. Mary’s Anglican Church with fieldstone foundation and the former car dealership, now part of the museum and an art gallery. The congregation dates to 1887. The car dealership building is the oldest of its kind left in Saskatchewan. The adjacent log cabin museum is the oldest purpose built museum in the province. The food tents were on a street of mixed vintage buildings — wood, brick, stone. On the corner was the Jasper Hotel, now clad in yellow and brown. I stayed there in 1965 to cover the Saskatchewan Stock Growers’ convention. Federal Agriculture Minister Harry Hays was the main guest, talking about the new program allowing first imports of Charolais cattle. (I recall 20 guest rooms shared one bathroom, with one tub, two toilets.) Everybody lined up for food tickets — $2 each. Then it was a rush for food — two Chinese places, one Korean/Aboriginal, one Italian, one western and two bakeries. Tables on the other end of the street allowed us to better enjoy the food. Between us we pigged out on Chinese noodles, dry ribs, sweet and sour pork, Chinese dumplings, beef brisket, meatballs, bannock, iced latte and nutala pastries. Folks were friendly as in Moose Jaw, if not friendlier. We met two former Moose Jaw residents — Brent Mason, who used to do Owls on Tour education programs and now teaches public school: and the Walters family from Newfoundland, now from Tompkins. Come experience the difference hometown service makes” The City of Moose Jaw wound up the year 2015 in sound financial condition. Audited financial statements show the city ended the 12 months with a $1.7 million surplus — equal to about four per cent of expenditures. City Finance Director Brian Acker said the city likes to keep surplus operating funds at five per cent of expenditures — or about $2.2 million. The city has about $4.5 million in the accumulated surplus from operations, but he cautioned the city might need some of that to soften the blow of lower provincial funds in 2017. Saskatchewan cities receive one percentage point of the five per cent provincial sales tax (PST). Based on the 2015 PST revenues, Moose Jaw will receive about $364,000 less in 2017 than this year. Council took no action on the surplus. In past years, council has used $1 million of the excess surplus to do pavement upgrades. The surplus came from several sources. Revenues were almost $1.6 million higher than planned with $1 million from photo radar fines. General government costs came in $420,000 less than expected while protection to persons and property was $700,000 over budget, mainly from fire service wages that came from other sources in 2015. Parks and recreation was $80,000 over budget from changes in grant fund accounting. Moose Jaw has the the third lowest debt ($30.4 million) of six major Saskatchewan cities. Cities with less debt are Yorkton at $18.7 million and Prince Albert at $12.7 million. On a per capita basis, Moose Jaw has the lowest taxation of five cities at $737 per resident. Swift Current has $795 taxes per person with Saskatoon at $883, Prince Albert at $966, and Regina at $1,180. S6H-4R3 BIZWORLD By Ron Walter For Moose Jaw Express Fuel retailer’s share price sparked by convenience store deal Shares of Alberta-based Parkland Fuels jumped almost 15 per cent in one day, during late August, when the company announced an acquisition giving it the most gasoline retail outlets in Canada. Parkland will pay $985 million for the majority of the Canadian business operations of CST Brands. The deal is a side deal. Alimentation Couche-Tard bought all of CST but is selling these assets to satisfy the Competition Bureau. The CST acquisition takes Parkland to 1,555 outlets across Canada from just over 1,000 and provides more expansion into Quebec, Ontario and the Atlantic provinces with the Ultramar brand. A number of other fuel-related operations are part of the deal. The deal is supposed to increase Parkland’s cash flow by 20 per cent immediately before the usual savings from integrating operations. No wonder the shares popped so fast and furiously. Parkland has been around for decades. In Saskatchewan we know the company as Fas Gas; few people realize Parkland also operates all the Esso gas stations and C-stores. Growing by acquisition from Fas Gas, Parkland has added new retail outlets, wholesale/commercial operations and heating businesses along with a U.S. retail and wholesale operation in North Dakota. The company is set up as a high dividend payer with the current $1.14 annual rate yielding 3.9 per cent. The million-dollar question for investors is: will the shares continue their upward trend? A snapshot of Parkland indicates the shares are currently well-valued. At $29.01, the shares are a rather high 44 times earnings, a rich 13.4 times cash flow, and a high 3.4 times book value. After the purchase, with $200 million in new shares and $785 debt, the debt situation should still be fine. Parkland has been well managed with pre-CST debt under half of equity and eight times interest coverage. SAFE. PAIN FREE A Nice Walk Ruined When the Liarton Lyres Old-timers Hockey team gets together during the summer we do not meet on the ice but at the local golf course. That might not be a good thing because we are rough on the greens. Most of the Lyres are experienced at retirement and experienced at golf but there are a few exceptions, myself being one of them. I am newly retired or as some would say, by Dale “bushy” lazy, and I do watch and learn from these experienced Bush retirees because they can be wise beyond words. After a recent team golf tournament and BBQ, I discovered I have so much to learn about retirement…and even more to learn about golf. For the record, I do not like the “proper” game of golf, mostly because there are rules, but I do enjoy the idea of four people sharing a beautiful afternoon with a common purpose in mind …socializing and chasing/following some balls around a field. One reason I do not like golf is quite simple and basic, I am lousy at it. I have no real skills or talent. That is frustrating for a talented good looking smart guy like myself. I like to think that because I try to enjoy myself at everything, even things I am crappy at; I do get invited for some social outings, even the occasional round of golf. I think I get invited mostly because the loser buys drinks. Also because when someone is terrible at something, it can be amusing to others who have skills. I think my job in the foursome is to be amusing and apparently buy drinks. The Lyres have a tradition of teaming a good golfer with a poor golfer in a “best ball” tournament with a difference. Best ball tourneys usually allow pairs to decide which of their “drives” to use and then alternate shots. The Lyres allow the other pair in the foursome to decide not only which drive to use but also the other shots as well, and because most of the guys know and have golfed with each other for so long, the teams can be fairly even in a fair way on the fairway. I felt sorry for “Wall Eye,” my partner for the tourney, because he would have to be excellent to compensate for my lack of golfitude. I was both pleased and alarmed when I discovered that Walleye had been a club golf pro many years ago and was considered to be the best golfer on the Lyres. I was pleased that my partner was a good golfer and alarmed that if he was the best, that meant I was considered to be the worst. When I discovered that Wally got his nickname “Wall Eye” because his right eye is glass, I was immediately impressed with not only his golfing skills but also his hockey skills. In the end, we managed to finish in the middle of the pack (sixth place). There were some dubious awards presented later at the BBQ. Somehow I managed to impress the powers that be and gratefully accepted the “Closest Club to the Water” award which was a beat up old “Lee Trevino” 5 iron that had been spray painted gold. Coincidently (ironically?) that beat up old Lee Trevino 5 iron replaced the 5 iron I lost the grip on, and away it went flying into the middle of the water hazard on the 12th hole sinking immediately in the muck and goo, thus ensuring my nomination. It is a good thing the set of clubs I was using were borrowed from my son and not rented because that would have cost me a bundle. I wonder if my son will notice a golden Lee Trevino 5 iron in amongst his Pings. I admit that, as a golfer, I am a pretty good hockey player. Maybe if there was body-checking in golf the game might catch on and become popular. There is one well-known guy who owns his own golf course and it isn’t “The Donald.” Country music’s “The Willie” Nelson managed to keep his golf course after some tax problems. Now he can get “Crazy” and lay down his own set of rules. Willie’s first rule is no more than 12 in a foursome, which I think enhances the social aspect of the game and that is Willie’s second rule. The game must be fun. That is a good rule. Another of Willie’s great rule changes is: Change jingling and or farting on the greens is forbidden. What more can be said? How do I have fun in a game where I am so lousy? The first thing I do is fill out my scorecard before I tee off. By marking 18 “nines” I keep the pressure off me to do well. It also makes the math easier. No matter what, I always seem to buy the drinks. Fore!...five…six…sigh. Backtracking from “correction line” and farm access road — all in a day’s run By Ron Walter For Agri-Mart Express We were both in conversation when Keith said: “Hey, where are you going?” “To Briercrest, why?” then I noticed we were approaching Drinkwater. We were so busy talking I missed the turn south to Briercrest. I made the necessary turn and we headed to Briercrest and another post- Heron flies Deer flees er run into the South Country. Crops are just amazingly tall and thick. Even with a fair amount of wind damage they should be excellent if grades stay good. As we closed in on Kayville, I pointed out that Dahinda is to the east, before he did. The last article I wrote on a day out here I placed Dahinda to the west. South of Avonlea, we saw a huge great blue heron in the distance. It posed for us then flew away. Instead of taking the highway to Ogema, I drove on a good grid road. About a mile from Ogema, the Prius turned onto a less developed farm access road. The road was a little slick from recent rain but the Prius did okay. We drove past a farm when an eightpoint buck trotted ahead of us. The deer decided to leave us, heading into a tall dense stand of durum. The top of his head and antlers was all we saw. The going must have been rough. The buck returned to the road for a minute then crossed into a tall thick canola field. My photos, taken while steering on the slick road, were terrible. We got to a “correction line” leading Hawk perch into Ogema. About 60 feet into the line, I backed up, not wanting to call the Motor Club from way out here. We didn’t do our usual coffee break at Ogema. Keith grumbled about union breaks. I threatened to cut his zero wage in half. A large nicely mottled hawk on a bale caught our attention north of Bengough. In Bengough, we had a nice homemade tomato soup with a grilled BLT. I thought the Bengough Cafe had reopened, but it has always been open for breakfast and all day Saturdays, now for lunch with a limited menu. I was told the owner sets hours to help the ice cream/sandwich shop. West of Coronach, three pilot trucks with stop signs met us. They were Canola meal piloting a 40-foot wide house on a trailer. We had to pull onto a side road while the 40 by 40 peaked roof unit went by. Arriving in Rockglen we had pie – sour cream raisin and lemon meringue – at the Burning Hills Cafe. On the way to Wood Mountain we noticed the fourth corn crop of the day. The Wood Mountain Regional Park was a magnet for us. We talked with the swimming class from Gravelbourg in line ahead of us while we waited for our two scoops of maple walnut ice cream. Today was not a diet day, particularly in light of the stress caused by a muddy road and talk about the U.S. election. The youth mentorship program is already looking for volunteers and financial support to assist with the community’s youth. “For the last couple of years we have been receiving significant inquiries about returning services to Moose Jaw,” said Ash Noureldin, Executive Director with Big Brothers Big Sisters Regina. “It was about a good year and a half ago where we said let’s go talk to Moose Jaw, see what is going on, and see if there is anything we can do to get an agency going there.” Noureldin says Big Brothers Big Sisters would not be returning to Moose Jaw without the support and guidance of Karen Closs and the Moose Jaw-South Central Regional Intersectoral Committee. And financial support has been provided by Prairie South School Division, Holy Trinity Catholic School Division, the Partners Against Violence committee, and the Five Hills Health Region. A soft launch is taking place right now; the hope is to have about 40 or 50 kids enrolled in the program by the end of 2016. Eventually, the organization hopes to have enough support from the community to open a physical office space in Moose Jaw. In the meantime, staff members from Regina and the satellite office in Weyburn will be in Moose Jaw meeting with volunteers, schools, and agencies to get the service established. Volunteers have already signed up and you can get involved, too. Big Brothers Big Sisters is about more than its Traditional Match mentorship program. In fact, the organization offers several different programs. This includes the In-School Mentoring program, which involves spending n hour a week with kids during the school day, focusing on non-academic activities. There is also “Game On,” in which volunteers will spend 75 minutes with a group of boys every week for eight weeks. Finally, Big Brothers Big Sisters offers “Go Girls.” In this program, volunteers will work with girls between the ages of 12 and 14. It will consist of seven sessions over several weeks. It will be held within school facilities. Both Game On and Go Girls will focus on physical activity, healthy eating, self esteem, and communication skills. Want to get involved? Please note you must be 18 years of age or older to apply as a volunteer. A criminal background check is required. The number one requirement, however, is remembering what it means to be a kid. “The biggest requirement is if you can relate to being a kid. Do you remember what it was like growing up, and the challenges and trials and tribulations of what it was like being a kid? That is probably the biggest and most important thing,” said Noureldin. “Are you a good listener? Can you not only reflect on what it was like being a kid but can you listen to a kid go off on the drama that is being a child? And can you reflect on your own experiences and help them navigate through the turbulent waters of developing into a young adult?” All applicants will be screened by Big Brothers Big Sisters staff members. You will then be matched up with a child, based on needs and interests. “We don’t just match a child with a kid; we do it in a very qualitative way. We ask a lot of questions about what your interests are and what you like and don’t like, whether that is sports or arts and crafts or going for a walk. We align accordingly,” said Noureldin. “If you are into guitar playing and your little brother wants to be into skydiving, we probably aren’t going to match you up. We try to look for common threads.” Don’t have time to volunteer? Financial support is also required. Don’t miss out on your opportunity to get involved with a great organization. Visit www.bigbrothersbigsistersofmj.ca for more information on programs. You can also apply as a volunteer or make a financial donation online. Reality TV has depicted a few misconceptions about how glamorous this career might be with lavish lifestyles By and fancy Doreen Heinbigner cars. Do they REALTOR® just pop a “For Sale” sign in the ground and watch the money pour in? I’d like to clear this up. Moose Jaw’s market is unlike the city of New York as we don’t have an abundance of high end luxury homes paying out those jaw dropping commissions. Their incomes can be rewarding for doing something they love, but these gen- erally don’t pay enough to drive around in the the newest Mercedes like on TV. Good Money? Yes, it can be if you are dedicated and knowledgeable. However, they only earn their commission from sales and don’t reap a monthly salary. Depending on the length of an individual transaction to close, an agent might earn somewhere between $10.00/hr - $500/ hr. Their brokerage will take a portion, and there’s Revenue Canada, other governing bodies, photography, advertising, fuel, and listing fees, etc. They can show buyers around for three to 12 months spending countless hours driving, hundreds in gas money, negotiating offers, and then at the last minute things fall through or they decide against buying, guess what? They get nothing. They must learn to budget their incomes because even though they are working their butt off 24/7, they may not get paid for 6 months! No training necessary? The average REALTOR® will write at least four, three-hour exams just to be able to trade in real estate, and then additional courses if they wish to specialize elsewhere. These courses are not exactly a bargain either. Once you’re licensed, plan on spending another five days of mandatory hands on training. They also attend a yearly continuing education class to keep their registration current. How Hard Can it Be? Real estate purchases and sales are often prompted by life changes, such as marriage, divorce, and death. Buying or selling a home is an emotional experience, and they essentially become counselors, holding their client’s hand, walking them through the process. Not only do they comb through the fine print on contracts, but are also babysitters, teachers, and chauffeurs. Real estate can be stressful, and Realtors are good at problem solving and acting quickly while staying calm. We’re held responsible for some of the biggest transactions of our clients lives, and if they make a mistake, it could cost them thousands of dollars. It is extremely important to balance work with family to prevent going crazy. Clients’ needs can be very demanding and Realtors utilize their experience and skills to prioritize. Real estate can be a very rewarding career, and there’s nothing better than finding your buyers their first starter home or dream home! It can take a few years to develop a reputation as a valuable agent, so one must be patient and determined. If you love being self-employed, you’re disciplined, and are a people person, then this just might be the right career for you! As a community-owned team, it is about giving back and investing in our community and, most importantly, in this regard it is about our fans…We saw something in the building that we felt needed improvement for our game night experience and for the excitement in our building.” Millar says the upgrades were necessary and noted that the players had difficulty hearing the music during pregame warm-ups. The one thing we have been sorely lacking is clear, crisp, rich sound. The new system featuring the power subs, as far as the technical side of it, really allows that full stadium sound experience…Light shows can get stale after a while, but the good news with this system is it fully programmable.” He adds the team will continue to work at improving the fan experience going forward. They recently stopped by City Hall. A group of Falun Gong practitioners have been travelling across the country to raise awareness about the group’s persecution at the hands of the Chinese government. They will travel over 10,000 kilometres, making stops in Ontario, Manitoba, and Saskatchewan and are made up of students and practitioners from each of those provinces. “We are in Moose Jaw to raise awareness about the persecution of Falun Gong, a Chinese meditation practice that has been persecuted in China since 1999. We are also raising awareness about the updated investigation into organ harvesting of Falun Gong prisoners in China,” said Corinne Pankewich, a practitioner and volunteer. “We are asking people to sign our petition and we are stopping by government offices to let them know about this issue as well. We started in Yorkton and are working our way around the province. There are currently five or more teams that are travelling in different provinces to raise awareness.” Falun Gong gained popularity in the 1990s but in 1999 the Chinese Communist Party, led by Jiang Zemin, ordered a campaign to eliminate the practice. Since that time, human rights groups and the United Nations have documented abuses, such as imprisonment, torture, and the killing of countless Falun Gong practitioners. Some, like former MP David Kilgour and human rights $4 off all Pastas REALTOR® lawyer David Matas, believe Falung Gong practitioners are being killed for their organs. They are concerned with the gap between the number of transplants and the short waiting times for organs, when compared to other countries. According to Doctors Against Forced Organ Harvesting, the rise in Chinese transplants coincides with Falun Gong incarceration rates. Falun Gong literature says that between 60,000 to 100,000 transplants have occurred in China every year since 2000. Pankewich says they are unsure of how many Falun Gong practitioners live in Canada because they do not keep a list of membership. She does note, however, there are about 25 practitioners in Saskatchewan, mostly based in Regina and Saskatoon. She says people are supportive of their cause. “People are very shocked that this is happening because a lot of people don’t know about it. Most people are very friendly and are happy to sign the petition. We have received a warm reception; we are impressed by the kindness of Canadians.” Visit http://bit.do/stop-organ-harvest to sign the petition. You can also visit www.stoporganharvesting.org for information on organ harvesting or www.falundafa. org for more on the practice of Falun Gong. 8 Main Street North 306-692-4747 Do you know of anyone deserving the Saskatchewan Order of Merit? AT THE E R O T S D O O F NEXT SCRATCH & SAVE DAY IS TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 6th People of all ages recently came together for a weekend full of gaming and camaraderie. The event, known as Summer GAX (Gamer’s Association Expo), was held by the Moose Jaw Gamer’s Association at the hall in St. Joseph’s Church. Dozens of gamers participated. The event began on Friday, August 12 and ran until Sunday afternoon. Gamers were able to play board/card games or online multiplayer games through the group’s own Local Area Network. Classic video game consoles were also set up and participants were encouraged to set up games like Dungeons and Dragons. Players were able to come and go as they pleased, with the action going until 2 a.m. on both Friday and Saturday. “Later on, probably around midnight, we will close one of the rooms off and we will play Cards Against Humanity,” explained Jess Hallsworth, President of the Moose Jaw Gamer’s Association. “This is an all-ages event but because that is an adultthemed game, we restrict it to adults.” The Moose Jaw Gamer’s Association has been holding events like GAX for several years now. “Originally, it started off as a bunch of guys in a basement playing computer games together for a weekend. It grew until it was too much for a basement and so we moved to the Scout Hall. Still, it was just a bunch of friends who were playing. And then we noticed that we had some money leftover, what do we do with it? Well, there were other people who wanted to join, so we decided to make it bigger,” explained Hallsworth. “It has grown bigger and bigger every year.” The group holds two events throughout the year, including one in the summer and another in the winter. These are fun, social events that can include tournaments and giveaways. Typically, approximately 60 to 80 gamers participate. The Moose Jaw Gamer’s Association also holds weekly board gaming nights. But it is not just about having fun, it is also about giving back; funds left over after administration costs are donated to various charities. In the past, the group has donated an iPad to the Union Hospital and last year they gave $1,000 to the Children’s Miracle Network. Hallsworth says the group hopes to one day become a non-profit organization. Want to get in all the fun? You can visit the group’s Facebook page to stay up to date on all the latest information. Parkinson Walk, first in Moose Jaw, Sept. 10th, 2016 By Joan Ritchie From the moment I met my mother-inlaw, I was impressed with her charm and passion for life. She was always a high-achiever; the second woman in Saskatchewan to get her pilot’s licence many years ago. Through a divorce after 20 years, she moved to the West Coast where she started over, five teenage boys in tow. She was an extraordinary cook and could make a gourmet dinner anytime, anyplace and make it look effortless and done with exquisite style. As a devoted employee in management sales with many high-end hotel chains, she was well-respected and admired in her profession. Close to retirement, my mother-in-law Jollean Ewens was diagnosed with Parkinson’s and as the years went on and the disease robbed her of a quality of life, she fought it with dignity and grace, always a smile on her face. She passed away on September 22nd, 2014. The story is not over. Although this debilitating disease stole the very essence of her being and her life, there continues to be hope that one day there will be a world without Parkinson’s tomorrow. Since 1990, Parkinson SuperWalk fundraiser is the largest national fundraising event for Parkinson Canada. Every September, approximately 10,000 people from coast to coast take part as volunteers and participants, raising over $33 million for support service, research, advocacy and education, helping to build a better life for Canadians living with Parkinson’s. Last year, Saskatchewan held three walks across the province. This year, the local Parkinson Support Group will be hosting Moose Jaw’s first Parkinson SuperWalk on Saturday, September 10th at Wakamow Valley, Kins- A beautiful, loving and passionate woman, Jollean Ewens died of Parkinson disease on September 22, 2014. men – Wellesley Park. Registration begins at 12:00 p.m., Opening Ceremonies follows at 1:00 p.m. with the 2 km Walk commencing at 1:15 p.m. Parkinson’s disease is a progressive brain disorder and of the nervous system that impacts movement, coming in like a lamb developing gradually with barely noticeable symptoms into the force of a lion where symptoms are pronounced and extreme. Parkinson’s disease was first described by Dr. James Parkinson in 1817 in his Essay on Shaky Palsy. You may be familiar with two celebrities, Michael J. Fox and the late, great Muhammad Ali that have brought awareness to this debilitating disease. It is estimated that the number of people to be diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease will increase to 51 people a day by 2031. You can participate in Moose Jaw’s Parkinson SuperWalk by registering, collecting and recording pledges online at www.parkinsonsuperwalk.ca or by filling out pledge sheets that can be obtained from the Parkinson Canada office, 610 Duchess Street in Saskatoon. Bring the completed forms and money to registration on walk day. Cheques are payable to Parkinson Canada or Parkinson SuperWalk. The Moose Jaw Parkinson Support Group meets the last Monday of September, October, November, January, February and March at the Hillcrest Apostolic Church, Main St N., at 1:30 p.m. The group provides an opportunity to connect with others living with Parkinson’s disease and their care partners. Speakers and presenters discuss a variety of topics all focussed on learning how to live well with Parkinson’s disease. For more information, contact Barb at 306-756-2819. Building permit value increase led by housing By Ron Walter For Moose Jaw Express Led by a new apartment building and two industrial buildings, building permit values in July almost doubled from the previous year. Value of permits issued by city hall in July was just over $5 million, an increase of $2.4 million. Construction values for the year to the end of July were still behind the 2015 pace with $26.4 million compared with $28.99 million last year. Housing remains the strongest sector with 35 single family residences worth $16 million started this year. By July 31 last year, 26 houses worth $7.5 million had been started. July saw five new single family residences worth $2.75 million start, compared with six valued at $1.9 million in the previous July. A new apartment for persons with disabilities at 244 Manitoba St. E. is worth $1.31 million. Two industrial buildings permitted are a $660,000 unit at 1815 Stadacona St. W. for recycling processes, and a $425,000 building at 67 Lancaster Road in Grayson Business Park. The commercial centre just south of Thatcher Drive East saw a start on a $778,000 retail complex near Montana’s. A retail building at 204 Manitoba St. W. will have $150,000 in alterations. Homemakers from the community magically turn the apples into tasty pies with flaky crusts for the occasion the last Wednesday of every August. This year presented a challenge with apples. According to one grower, the apples had to be processed right away when ready or they turned mushy. Apparently, grain crops were not the only thing impacted by rain and humidity. The day was another success with donations stuffed into jars on the tables. Museum spokesperson Cherilyn Nagel thanked everyone for coming out and supporting the apple pie day. “This is our big fundraiser,” she said. Without support from apple pie bakers and eaters on this day the museum would have difficulty operating. “We were able to have three students this year. That is important for us to have summer jobs for students.” Besides operating the museum seven days a week, the three students worked on numerous projects. One of the less desirable projects was removal of the antique toilets from the museum and replacement with more modern facilities. General painting, maintenance and sign restoration were part of the work. And Kendra Myers developed a new display around her grandfather Ron Myers, a war veteran, who donated his artifacts to the museum years ago. Apple pie day patrons were well cared for by five or six eager young boys and girls serving coffee, tea, water and juice. “They come to help every year,” said Nagel. The Mossbank museum is built around the Ambroz Blacksmith Shop on Main Street. The blacksmith shop is the only operable shop in Saskatchewan still on its original location. The Lentil harvest has started this week but rain showers continue to limit the progress of harvest. Recent rains and hail storms are taking a toll on some fields. So far the lentil yields in heavily hail damaged fields have zero yield. Meanwhile, there are fields that missed the hail and stood up to the excessive rain. These fields are yielding up to 45 bushels per acres. Our summer newsletter on our website www.simpsonseeds.com estimated the record seeded lentil crop would produce 3.8 million metric tonnes. We now believe the wet conditions will lower production by 20 per cent to 25 per cent. The new crop estimates would now range from 3.0 to 3.1 million tonnes. Last year we had a drought that lowered production to only 2.0 million tonnes. What’s Really in the Bin? Obtaining a Representative Field Sample It’s that time of year again - we are in the home stretch of the growing season, and waiting to see that crop starting to turn and ripen. It is this time of year, we like to get in touch with growers and offer various tips that can make your experience with Simpson Seeds an excellent one! In this edition of our newsletter, we would like to key in on obtaining representative field samples at harvest. Field samples are important for producers as they indicate the quality of grain held on the farm. Samples are important for us to give global markets an idea of the quality available in the growing area, and to facilitate the matching of grain to an export market. For those individuals who currently have production contracts with us, you may be familiar with sampling as our contract outlines that a representative two pound sample must be provided immediately upon harvest. Ultimately, the more representative the sample of your grain is, the more accurate our grading staff can properly assess the grade of your product. Here are some steps for effective grain sampling: 1. As trucks unload to a bin, take samples at regular and consistent intervals. Keep in mind, the amount of grain being moved and the size of conveyance equipment should be taken into account. For Example: If you are using a larger auger, sample more frequently 2. When sampling with a grain scoop, avoid sampling right when the gate opens, as there is a lot of chaff and dust at first. Once a good flow is established, alternate between the sides and the center of the grain stream. Often a ‘zig-zag’ pattern with the scoop is effective. Ideally, a pail should be about ¾ full by the time the truck is unloaded. Mix the contents thoroughly by hand. Best practice at this point is to split the sample down using two additional pails, each receiving half the product from the sampling pail, and retaining one of two splitting pails. This should give about a two kg sample (enough to fill one of our sample bags. However, if you cannot split the sample down, just ensure the sampling pail is mixed well before portioning into a grain sample bag. This same procedure can be followed when moving grain out of a bin as well, again paying attention to the speed or size of the conveyance equipment, and the amount of grain being moved. 5. Because the uniformity of grain can change so much across a field due to topography or weather, we recommend creating a composite sample of each bin, as one never knows when one bin may be of better quality than another. Sampling frequently and thoroughly mixing the sample will help us to give you the best quality assessment of your grain. We thank you again for supporting us in this growing season and past ones. We wish you a safe and prosperous harvest, and look forward to serving you in the future. 3. Label the sample bag with your name (or farm name), phone number, bin number/reference, commodity and tonnage available to speed up the process when you drop off your 306.692.2389 #9 Highland Road, Moose Jaw, SK 11709 Slots print ad MJ.indd 1 2016-08-15 10:57 AM FREE MOOSEJAWEXPRESS.COM • Wednesday, August 31, 2016 • PAGE A19 PERSONAL CLASSIFIEDS Add a picture, sell your things with Moose Jaw’s Homegrown Newspaper HOME • FARM • PERSONALS [email protected] Channel Guide SPORTS HIGHLIGHTS Bell Shaw Sasktel Star Choice ExpressVa 2 WTVS WTVS 56 364 3 CBKFT CBKFT 13 270 5 CFRE CFRE 115 6 CKCK CKCK 02 4 315 7 WEAT Weather Net 17 505 398 8 WDIV WDIV 04 360 9 CBKT CBKT 09 3 306 11 WWJ WWJ 62 362 12 WXYZ WXYZ 07 361 13 SCN SCN 19 266 352 14 YTV Youth TV 11 552 543 15 TREE Treehouse 91 553 546 16 NW CBC Newsworld 15 502 390 17 NNET CTV Newsnet 16 501 391 18 SCORE The Score 111 410 403 19 TSN TSN 110 400 400 20 NET Sportsnet 24 408 418 21 HGTV HGTV 102 600 564 22 VISION Vision TV 261 394 M3 13 571 581 23 M3 24 MM Much Music 12 570 580 25 EDACC Edaccess 267 351 26 W W 100 602 568 27 SLICE Slice 101 601 562 28 BRAVO Bravo 73 620 523 29 ENC AV2 Encore Ave. 2 205 30 A&E A&E 70 615 520 31 WUHF WUHF 31 363 32 CNN CNN 50 500 Country Music TV 14 575 583 33 CMT 34 SPIKE Spike TV 134 628 584 Learning Channel 71 521 560 35 TLC 36 DISC Discovery 51 520 505 37 SHOW Showcase 75 617 522 38 TOON Teletoon 90 555 545 30 FAM Family 130 557 541 40 PCH WPCH 17 131 294 529 41 COM Comedy Net 74 626 547 42 TCM Turner Classic 132 539 43 FOOD Food Network 103 603 561 44 OUT Outdoor Life 115 411 457 45 HIST History TV 55 522 516 46 SPACE Space 72 627 528 47 AMC AMC 609 Fox Sports Racing 113 417 406 48 FSR 49 TROP TV Tropolis 135 619 525 50 SHOP Shopping 21 660 392 54 MTV Music TV 25 581 566 55 MC1 Movie Central 1 200 56 MC2 Movie Central 2 201 57 MC3 Movie Central 3 202 58 MC4 Movie Central 4 203 59 WSBK WSBK 38 223 296 654 60 KTLA KTLA 05 222 298 653 61 WGN WGN Local 09 221 295 651 88 TVA TVA 714 89 TV5 TVCinq/TV 5 272 145 761 90 RDI RDI 273 126 730 108 SASK SK Legislature 20 516 109 CPAC CPAC 18 512 396 AUTO RACING Saturday, September 3 12:30 p.m. 48 FSR FIA World Endurance Championship Mexico City. 1:30 p.m. 8 WDIV NASCAR Racing XFINITY Series: VFW Sport Clips Help a Hero 200. L A H MB ME E M FA ALL STAR Lewis William McNamee The Saskatchewan Baseball Hall of Fame proudly announced the selection of the Late Lewis William McNamee, Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, was inducted into the Saskatchewan Baseball Hall of Fame on Saturday, August 20, 2016, at Battleford, Saskatchewan. Lewis McNamee began his baseball career in the 1930’s. Playing with the Legion team in the game that launched the 1933 City Juvenile Ball Season in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan. Lewis practically stole the show when the Legion registered a victory in a seven-inning game at Grayson Park. Fans witnessed Lew McNamee fan seventeen [17] hitters. The following day the newspaper headlines read, “Young Pitcher Fans 17 Hitters.” Lew also played great defense, excelling at playing second base and being a very good hitter, but his great pitching skills were best remembered and witnessed by fans from around Southern Saskatchewan when he pitched in many tournaments from 1938 through1949. These included Swift Current, Riverhurst, Lawson, Central Butte, Eyebrow Elbow, Davidson, Marquis, Liberty, Chamberlain, Yorkton, Melville, Notre Dame Wilcox, Stalwart, Holdfast, Preeceville, Qu’Appelle, Assiniboia, Outlook, Keeler, Eyebrow, Avonlea, Craik, Lake Valley, Tuxford, Estevan, Indian Head, Brandon, Minot, Carrot River, Moose Jaw, Buchanan, Glasgow and Williston. Lew pitched two complete games at an Indian Head tournament, one of the very best tournaments in Western Canada. This was a great feat that few have ever accomplished in that League. He was the most reliable pitcher in the South Saskatchewan League for many years. Twice he was named to the All Star Team over many other great pitchers in that league. Once he was selected as a starting pitcher and once as reliever. Lew was always willing to help finance and support baseball in all areas, including helping to build Rosswell Ball Park and many other smaller parks in Moose Jaw. Lewis McNamee was a member of the Saskatchewan Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum, and willingly donated in support of the organization. Lewis McNamee died June 12, 2007. Special Olympics Moose Jaw will be holding their AGM: Thursday, Sept. 15th, 2016 at the Yara Centre AGM: 7:30-9:30 Three New Board Positions will be opening up for election. Anyone interested must have a Criminal Record Check PRIOR to being accepted. If there is one thing I can’t stand it is flies in the house. I don’t imagine they are as bad in town as they are in the country but I think they live anywhere they can find something to eat or sit upon. Flies carry germs and disease. They can also cause significant damage in agricultural crops as well as bother cattle and horses; causing wounds and spreading disease. Andree Seu Peterson suggests that “birds and planes are airborne on wings shaped in such a way as to create lower pressure above the wings to create graceful lift. (However,) not so with flies: Their wings are constantly flapping, 200 times a second, attached to their bodies in such a way as to create a ceaseless buzzing.” My dad is the best “fly swatter” around. For as long as I can remember, he would grab the swatter and finish off a few while he waited for the meal to be served. I don’t ever remember flies taking over the kitchen when I was growing up but since then, I’ve seen that the lack of a “fly swatter” in my house has proved to provide a safe haven for those pesky little pests. Maybe I need to give some incentive to those who like to eat at my table to pick up the wiry little weapon and help out the cook. Far be it to me to appreciate a fly but apparently, flies are used for some good. According to Wikipedia, “fly larvae can be used as a biomedical tool for wound care and treatment. Maggot debridement therapy (MDT) is the use of blow fly larvae to remove the dead tissue from wounds, most commonly being amputations. ...Removing the dead tissue promotes cell growth and healthy wound healing.” Some species of maggots are also bred commercially to be sold as angling bait as well as food for certain mammals, fish, reptiles and birds. There is also a type of traditional Sardinian sheep milk cheese that contains larva from the cheese fly (known as cheese skippers) that helps to soften the cheese and change the aroma as the cheese matures. I just can’t imagine eating that type of cheese. Interesting to note, the devil is referred to in the Word of God as Beelzebub or “lord of the flies.” I think this title is very fitting. Flies are disgusting, full of germs and disease, pesky, tormenting and overall dirty. The devil fits this description well. Although he poses as an angel of light, everything about him is disgusting. He is full of death and disease, tormenting any who will allow him to and is overall a dirty and deceptive force that doesn’t stop pestering if he isn’t stopped. The good news is that, just as it doesn’t take much to kill a fly, it really doesn’t take much to rid our lives of the devil and his work. The Word of God says to “resist the devil and he will flee.” As we put on the full armor of God (Ephesians 6:10-18), we will be armed and dangerous to the enemy. We are promised victory as we first submit to God and then resist the devil through faith and perseverance. Stand strong because we always come out the other side; we are overcomers, victorious ones! As I search my heart and soul for meaning in all the stuff that seems to bog us down during seasons of change, one word comes to mind… PERSEVERANCE. I won’t expound and bore you with the facts…the concerning health of aging parents Joan Ritchie and a preemie grandbaby, the health EDITOR of other family members, as well as workload changes at the office; it seems that “it doesn’t rain but it pours!” “$#&% Happens” to all of us. We need perspective: It’s not what happens but how we deal with it that matters. The good news is that the human spirit has the potential to rise above difficulty and persevere. ..to be steadfast in doing something despite delay in achieving success. You could switch out the word for persistence, tenacity or determination. In all of this we need to be encouraged, keep faith and continue on to reach beyond and get a grip that a better day is on the horizon. As you may have guessed by now, I love the encouragement that others can speak into my life and hopefully yours. These words by well-known author Rudyard Kipling, “If: A Father’s Advice to His Son” reaches far beyond a son in meaning, to all who have ears to hear. “If you can keep your head when all about you Are losing theirs and blaming it on you, If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you, But make allowance for their doubting too; If you can wait and not be tired by waiting, 6:30 7:00 7:30 8:00 8:30 9:00 9:30 10:00 10:30 And yet don’t look too good, nor talk too wise 7:00 7:30 8:00 8:30 9:00 9:30 10:00 10:30 If you can dream - and not make dreams your master; If you can think - and not make thoughts your aim; If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster And treat those two impostors just the same; If you can bear to hear the truth you’ve spoken Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools, Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken, And stoop and build ‘em up with worn-out tools If you can make one heap of all your winnings And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss, And lose, and start again at your beginnings And never breathe a word about your loss; If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew To serve your turn long after they are gone, And so hold on when there is nothing in you Except the will which says to them: ‘Hold on!’ If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue, Or walk with Kings - nor lose the common touch, If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you, If all men count with you, but none too much; If you can fill the unforgiving minute With sixty seconds’ worth of distance run, Yours is the Earth and everything that’s in it, And - which is more - you’ll be a Man, my son!” Send your letters to the editor to: [email protected] or 888-241-5291 All columns, letters to the editor and editorials are solely the personal opinions of the writers themselves and not necessarily the opinions of The Moose Jaw Express. This week’s recipes are from the Canadian Mennonite Cookbook. • • • Dutch Apple Pie 6-8 apples 1 cup brown sugar 1/2 cup white sugar 1/2 tsp. cinnamon 3 tbsps. flour 1 cup sweet cream Pare, core and quarter the apples then slice. Mix the brown and white sugar, cinnamon and flour. Place half of this mixture in the bottom of an unbaked pie shell. Arrange the apple slices in rows over the sugar. Mix the cream with the remainder of the sugar and flour and pour over the apples. Bake in a 450 degrees F oven for 10 minutes. Reduce the heat to 325 degrees F and continue baking for about 45 minutes longer until the apples are translucent and tender. • • • Apfelkuchen Fritters 1 cup flour 3 eggs 1/4 tsp. salt 1/2 cup milk 2 cups chopped apples Sift dry ingredients together. Add eggs and milk and beat well. Add apples to batter and mix well. Drop by spoonfuls into deep, hot fat. Fry until golden brown. Remove from fat, drain and sprinkle with sugar. • • • Applejack 1 egg 1 cup buttermilk 1 tsp. soda 1 tbsp. lard flour to thicken apples sugar Mix the egg, buttermilk, soda and lard. Add enough flour to thicken the mixture. Cover the bottom of a pudding dish with apples that have been pared, cored and sliced. Sprinkle with sugar then with some batter. Place another layer of apples, sugar and batter. Finish with apples. Sprinkle with sugar and small bits of butter. Bake at 350 degrees F for 45 minutes. • • • Apple Roll 1 1/2 cups sugar 2 cups water 2 cups flour 1 tsp. salt 4 tsps. baking powder 6 tbsps. butter 3/4 cup milk 2 shredded apples 1 tbsp. butter sugar cinnamon In a shallow pan, heat 1 1/2 cups sugar and 2 cups water and cook slowly for 5 minutes. Pour syrup into a baking pan. Mix the flour, salt, baking powder, shortening and milk to make a biscuit dough. Roll out and sprinkle with finely shredded apples. Roll up similar to a jelly roll and cut into 1 1/4 inch thick slices. Place slices in syrup. Dot with butter and sprinkle with sugar and cinnamon. Bake for 30 minutes at 375 degrees F or until crust is brown. • • • Apple Sauce 6 large apples 1 cup water 1 tbsp. lemon juice 1 tsp. sugar 1/4 tsp. each cinnamon, nutmeg and cloves Peel and core apples and chop into a saucepan. Add water and lemon juice. Bring to a boil, then simmer for 30 minutes. Remove from stove and add sugar and spices and stir until well-mixed. Use masher to remove large chunks, if desired. Cool. May be served warm over ice cream. Joyce Walter can be reached at [email protected] MOOSEJAWEXPRESS.COM • Wednesday, August 31, 2016 • PAGE A25 Market Place Move right in! On August 20th, the Jobransa Foundation for Children officially opened the doors of its new facility at 75 Ross St. W. A special block party was held, which included face painting, music, a bouncy castle, and an official ribbon cutting ceremony. The Jobransa Foundation for Children is a cross-Canada organization but this is their first service centre location. Moose Jaw’s pilot centre will be replicated elsewhere, however, with similar centres opening in Calgary and Brandon in 2017. “This is the grand opening for our pilot program centre. This is one of many centres that we will open over the next 12 to 18 months. We are bringing special needs families together to offer programming for disabled children from zero to 22 years of age,” said Tammy Beutle-Spilchuk, founder and Executive Director of the Jobransa Foundation for Children. As of two years ago, the Jobransa Foundation simply worked with hospitals across the country. Now, they can work directly with families to offer programs and services. “An application would come to the hospital and then they would send it to our board and then we would decide what we could do. It could be for something like a lift, a wheelchair, or an MRI in Toronto. We would pay for it. But the wait time was so long — it was about six to eight months for the whole process because the family would put in an application to the hospital, the hospital would have to get in touch with us, and then that line would go back,” said Beuthle-Spilchuk. “This way, we have cut down on that wait time…We still work with hospitals but now families can come straight to us and we can execute a lot quicker.” So why did the Jobransa Foundation choose Moose Jaw? Johnny 2 Fingers and the Deformities provided music. “We did a lot of research over the last two years. There are a lot of services for autism in the south central area but we found there aren’t a lot of services for the other disabilities. We wanted to create a centre so that all parents would have access to the same services without that wait time.” The office has been open for just over nine weeks and they already serve approximately 35 families. Summer programming was at full capacity and there is already a waiting list for next year. “Our summer programming replicated a school day, so parents would drop their child off at 9 a.m. and pick them up at 3:30. We would go from classroom to classroom, either doing independent living, arts and crafts, or expressive arts,” said Beutle-Spilchuk. “During the day we would have one therapy session, whether the child needed speech, counselling, or social work. We could even bring the whole family in to come up with something like a chore sheet, to keep the kids accountable.” The centre also offers a popular sports program. “Our sports program is one of a kind in Saskatchewan; it is about bringing a disabled child into a sports-like coaching atmosphere,” said Beutle-Spilchuk. “We know they are not going to be able to do everything, in terms of skills training, but it is about getting a jersey, getting a photo, and learning to play something like basketball or soccer. The families get to sit back and watch their child play a sport.” In September registration will open up for individual programs, such as dance music, cooking, and coffee mornings for parents. Tuesdays and Thursdays will feature drop-in sessions for services like counselling or speech therapy sessions. The centre also has lots of fun activities planned, such as a bachelor auction on September 30 at Chiller’s Brew Pub. For more information on this event, or on programs and services, drop by the centre or call 306-972-2227. Karius is originally from Melville but is now based out of Red Deer, Alberta. She travels across western Canada with her bright green car. Kids are encouraged to grab a marker and sign her car, acting as a pledge they will be kind to others. She has been doing it for about a year now and is already using a second vehicle. “I was invited to Jobransa’s grand opening so that people could sign my car. They sign it to pledge kindness,” said Karius. “It is supposed to jog your memory, especially for kids; when they feel like being mean to someone they can think about that pledge they signed.” Karius also hands out special cards with codes on them. Recipients are encouraged to complete an act of kindness and then go online to register using their code. They then pass the card onto someone else, to generate even more kind acts. On the Moment of Kindness website you track how far your card has travelled. She will be back at the Jobransa centre from September 19-21 to offer anger management classes for both adults and youth, along with a No Such Thing as a Bully workshop for the community. Visit www. momentofkindness.com for more information. Moose Jaw North MLA Warren Michelson signs the Kindness Car.
