In 1956, the first Los Angeles CCD “Institute” was held at Mount Carmel High School on Hoover Street in Los Angeles. Some 500 teachers and catechists attended the two-day conference, listened to speakers and gained experience from other teachers. The institutes grew in attendance each year and by 1967 it was apparent that local schools could no longer handle the crowds and a new site was needed. The first “Congress” event Program book from 1967. So it was in 1967 with the cooperation of the three dioceses of Los Angeles, MontereyFresno and San Diego, the agenda for the first three-day “Congress” was set. The purpose, as stated by officials: “The Southern California Confraternity Congress hopes to provide an atmosphere of Christian unity ... and learning, where all who attend may advance scholastically and spiritually for the benefit of each and the common good of all.” Held January 13-15, 1967, at the International Hotel near Los Angeles International Airport, the first Southern California Confraternity Congress had a registration fee of $5. The theme was adopted from the words of Pope John XXIII in his opening address to the Second Vatican Council: “The greatest concern of the Ecumenical Council is this: that the sacred deposit of Christian doctrine should be guarded and taught more efficaciously.” Liturgy from the 1962 “Institute.” “From these words the decrees of Vatican II have formulated for Christians everywhere certain duties: to learn; to live and to share more fully the message of salvation,” the “Congress hopes to provide an atmosphere of Christian unity ... pre-event materials stated. and learning, where all who At the second CCD Congress February 2-4, 1968 (also at the attend may advance International Hotel), registra- scholastically and spiritually.” tion remained $5, with selfparking 50 cents, $1 for valet. The theme: “The unmistakable work being done today by the Holy Spirit in making the laity ever more conscious of their own responsibility and encouraging them to serve Christ and the church m all circumstances.” One of the workshops from the 1967 Congress event. The third Congress (February 21-23, 1969) was the last at the International Hotel, and was the first to incorporate Scripture in its theme: “How beautiful on the mountains, are the feet of one who brings good news, who heralds peace, brings happiness, proclaims salvation, and tells Zion, ‘Your God is king’ (Isaiah 52:7).” Again, attendance began to outgrow the hotel’s facilities, and in 1970 Congress moved to the much larger Anaheim Convention Center (February 20-22), where registration was $5 for one day or per workshop; $10 for two days. The first day was a Youth Conference for high school students only. The March 26-28, 1971 Congress carried the theme “You Shall be my Witnesses to the Ends of the Earth” (Acts 1:8), while the February 18-20, 1972, Congress was a 50th Jubilee celebration of the creation of the CCD in Los Angeles. In 1973, the event was retitled the Religious Education Congress, and bilingual themes were adopted in 1979. A list of Congress dates and themes: More than 7,000 people attended the 1967 Congress. Tickets are necessary for admittance into workshops and general sessions. TICKET EXCHANGE You may exchange tickets for any open workshops during the same period beginning at noon on the Friday of Congress at the Registration Booth’s Exchange window, located in the Prefunction area. Note: Any ticket can be used for sessions of the same time in the Arena or Hall B. SAVING SEATS It is permissible to save seats up to 10 minutes before a scheduled function begins. After that time, we ask that, in Christian love, you release these seats for others. If any Congress volunteer requests that you release seats that you are saving, please comply with the direction given. SMOKING Smoking is not allowed in the Convention Center. There are several outdoor courtyards where it is permitted. WORKSHOPS All workshops are ticketed and no one will be admitted to any session without the proper ticket. Any valid ticket will serve as admission to Arena or Hall B workshops, but these sessions are not open to those without tickets. Our speakers are generously sharing their time and talents with us. As a special courtesy to them, we ask that you please arrive at the workshop location prior to the scheduled start time. We remind you to please quiet your pager and turn off cell phones. All sessions will begin on time, and many speakers have asked that no one be admitted after the session has begun. Also, we ask you to avoid, as far as possible, leaving workshops during a presentation. Most of the workshops will have a “natural” break time when it would be less disruptive to the speaker and to the other participants. EMERGENCIES In case of emergency, contact the nearest Congress official wearing a red, white, blue striped ribbon; they are in radio contact and can summon help quickly. For life-threatening situations, please call 9-1-1. 13 General Info AUDIO RECORDING Many of the workshop sessions will be recorded (indicated by “*” and in this book). That is what the dark is for: Minding the interior, Nurturing the draw of growth Through places where death In its own time turns into life. In the glare of neon times, Let our eyes not be worn By surfaces that shine With hunger made attractive. That our thoughts may be true light, Finding their way into words Which have the weight of shadow To hold the layers of truth. That we never place our trust In minds claimed by empty light, Where one-sided certainties Are driven by false desire. When we look into the heart, May our eyes have the kindness And reverence of candlelight. That the searching of our minds Be equal to the oblique Crevices and corners where The mystery continues to dwell, Concealed in fugitive light. When we are confined inside The dark house of suffering That moonlight find a window. When we become false and lost That the severe noon-light Would cast our shadow clear. When we love, that dawn-light Would lighten our feet Upon the waters. As we grow old, that twilight Would illuminate treasure In the fields of memory. When we come to search for God, Let us first be robed in night, Put on the mind of morning To feel the insurgency Of light that will slow Inside the stillness Of a found world. Verse 2 In the south, the place of growing, there is wisdom in the earth, Both the painful song of dying and the joyful song of birth; As the earth gives up her lifeblood so her children’s hearts may beat, We give back to her our reverence holy ground beneath our feet. Verse 3 In the north, the place of wisdom, there is holy darkness deep, Here the silent song of mystery may awake you from your sleep; Here the music still and holy sounds beneath the snow and night In the ones who wait with patience for the coming of the light. Verse 4 In the west, the place of seeing, there is born a vision new Of the servant of the servants, who proclaimed a gospel true; Let the creatures of creation echo back creations prayer, Let the Spirit now breathe through us and restore the sacred there. Blinded by my actions and my personal gain, didn’t know today’s pleasure reaped a treasure of pain. But just like Paul, knocked off my horse, the Holy Spirit entered, put me back on my course. I said, “Mirror, mirror, mirror up on the wall, show me the way before I take a nasty fall.” Then I closed my eyes; before me did I see the Light of the World. Jesus came to me! The sacrament and sign’s a friend of mine. I knew that I was walking the borderline. So now that I’m aware that my ambition is my mission, to be the light of Christ I’ve now been commissioned. Copyright © 2007. Published by World Library Publications. All rights reserved. Used with permission. Verse 1 Light poured out, wraps all creation in beauty and warmth, in love and compassion. We stand in awe before our incredible God, whose glory resounds, whose brightness transcends beyond the heavens and the earth. Luz derramada cubre toda creación, con hermosura, amor y compasión. Entremos en presencia de nuestro grande Dios cuya gloria resuena, cuya luz trascende los cielos y la tierra. Verse 2 S U N D A Y Heaven’s brightness flows from me to you. As we share in creating the world anew. We build the kingdom with forgiveness and love, so we might live in peace all wars will cease and we reveal the radiance of Christ. La luz del cielo sobre todos cae mientras al mundo hay que restablecer. Construiremos el Reino con obras de amor. Y por fin habrá paz, Áy las guerras no más! Veremos ya el esplandor de Dios. 64 CLOSING LITURGY 2007 Religious Education Congress Sunday, March 4 • 8:15 a.m. & 3:30 p.m. Rap (English) ARENA We dare to be the brightness in the places of creation where we find the lost and lonely and bring them to salvation. Standing in the light we see it takes communication to spread the truth revealed in words and full participation. Arena Invited by the Word and inspired by the Spirit, the call to realize we must reveal it. Once you know the truth, once you’ve seen the light there’s no way to deny that lies hide in the night. Be vigilant and diligent throughout all your days and connect with the fact that the light is here to stay. Create a new norm that it’s time to transform from blindness to sight so that we live in peace and right. Walking in the darkness means walking with desires for earthly kinds of things that will end up in the fire. Be true to the truth because it tells the real story. Stand in the light, we reflect God’s glory.
