Mönchengladbach is hard to miss!
Situated on the west bank of the
Rhine between the largest German
conurbation – the Ruhr Area – and the
Netherlands, the city can be reached
easily and quickly via the excellent motorway network and the Deutsche Bahn
railway system.
By plane
Located just a short distance from the
city, the Düsseldorf-Mönchengladbach
Airport means that the whole of Europe is on the doorstep. The No 010
bus shuttles between the airport and

Mönchengladbach is connected to
its surrounding region, the cities of
Cologne and Düsseldorf and neighbouring countries by an extensive
road network. The A52 motorway runs
north of Mönchengladbach from the
Netherlands to the Ruhrgebiet, the A61
in the west links southern Germany to
the Netherlands and the A44 joins the
Aachen region to the Ruhrgebiet.

Its creator and builder sound like the

people. Let yourself be seduced by a
variety of shops and arcades, where

Several shopping streets, some of
which are pedestnan zones, await
shoppers both in Mönchengladbach
itself and in Rheydt – Hindenburgstrasse, Bismarckstrasse and Friedrichstrasse offer specialist shops in addition to
several department stores with a wide
range of merchandise. The fashion
sector, in particular, is well represented in Mönchengladbach as textile com-
panies have been located in the city
and the Lower Rhine for centuries and
internationally renowned firms, such
as Gardeur and van Laack are based
in the city. In Rheydt, the area’s second
shopping centre, specialist shops and
department stores dominate the scene,
and not just on the Hauptstrasse and

The amount of open space is one of
Mönchengladbach’s outstanding qualities with over half the urban area consisting of green spaces and delightful
gardens and parks. The Abtei Garden,

Bunter Garten, Schmölder Park, Odenkirchen Zoo, the city woods and the
Rheydt and Wickrath castle parks all
lie in the heart of the Lower Rhine, an
ancient cultural and natural landscape
BUNTER GARTEN (COLOURFULGARDEN)
Botanical Garden
The original 300 square metre ”Berggarten” and the 3,5 hectare ”Kaiserpark” have been developed over time
into an approximately 30 hectare park,
whose variety of flora is a treat for the
eyes.
Apothekergarten (Pharmacist’s Garden)
The Pharmacist’s Garden is home to over
200 different medicinal plants which
help in the training of future pharmacists
and chemists.
Scent and Touch Garden or
„Blind Garden”
The Scent and Touch Garden counts as
one of the Colourful garden´s special
features. It was set out especially for
partially sighted people.

SCHMÖLDERPARK
The almost 15 hectare Schmölder
Park, named after the industrialist Carl
Schmölder, is still regarded today as
Rheydt´s green oasis. The tranquil and
uncluttered park with its 180-year-old
beech trees, wide areas of grass and
lovingly arranged flower beds invites
visitors to walk and rest a while through
out the year.
ODENKIRCHEN ZOO
Founded in 1957, the 4.3 hectare site
houses almost 500 animals and is one
of the town’s main attractions.
CULTURAL LANDSCAPE PATH
The Cultural Landscape Path is part
of Mönchengladbach´s ‘environmental
open space concept’. The 13 km walk
from the Rheydter Höhe to the Hardter
Wald gives an overview of the cultural
and historical changes that have taken
place in the landscape and illustrates
the ecological interrelationship.

Hardter Wald (Hardt Forest)
The Hardter Wald, with its Celtic barrows, is the biggest continuous area
of woodland in Mönchengladbach.

Stadtwald (City Forest)
The City Forest contains the “Rheydter
Höhe”, which at 133 m is the highest
point in Mönchengladbach. Within this
extensive woodland area is a pond
around which winds a picturesque
path. In the summer the meadows are
popular for picnics and barbecues. The
Water Fun Park is an additional attraction for youngsters.
NIERSGRÜNZUG (NIERS RIVERSIDE
CONSERVATION AREA)
The Niers River flows for about 22 kilometres through the eastern part of the
city from Wanlo to Neuwerk. Extensive
parts of the Niersgrünzug – a green
strip of land on either side of the river
with walking and cycle paths – are
conservation areas. The Nieder Rheinroute (Lower Rhine Route) and the
Euroga-Radroute (Euroga Cycle Route)
form part of the Niersgrünzug.
Volksgarten (People‘s Garden)
The Volksgarten was a gift from entrepreneur Peter Krall to his hometown.
The park extends into the neighbouring
woodland, the Bungtwald, and has
been a conservation area since 1962.
The Volksgarten exudes a quite special
charm. Over 30-metre tall beech and
ash trees stand in majestic timelessness. The quiet, peaceful woodland
area, through which the Bungtbach
stream meanders, is therapy for the
soul. The Volksgarten became famous
beyond the city’s boundaries in October 2001 when people walking in the
park reported seeing an enormous fish
in the Volksgarten pond. Kuno, a 1.5 m
long killer catfish, attracted a great
deal of attention in the national media.
Boat trips round the pond are available
in the summer.
”Neue Niers” allotment garden area
In addition to the Rheydt and Wickrath
Castles, the allotment garden area is
one of the Euroga 2002plus projects.
One aim of the project is to integrate the potential of allotment gardens
within the public green space strategy
and to enhance their attractiveness
with new ideas. In total, there are 150
different allotment garden areas in

Rheydter Schlosspark (Castle Park)
The original fortified buildings were
redesigned under Otto von Bylandt to
plans drawn up by Maximilian Pasqualini in the 16 th century and transformed
into a prominent Renaissance castle.
The moat system with it‘s ramparts,
the pentagonal underground casemates as well as the gatehouse and outer
bailey styled like a palazzo in Fortezza
have remained.
The Castle park was restored for the
Euroga 2002plus project according to
plans dating back to the mid-19 th century. The exciting symbiosis of cultivated nature, Renaissance architecture
and modern art pervades. Around the
castle visitors can enjoy the tranquil-
lity of woodland, ponds and streams.
Natural areas of water and the typical
biodiversity of a riverside woodland
environment have again been able to

Beller Mühle (Beller Mill)
This recreational area with little lakes,
bridges, small gardens and sports facilities was developed almost 20 years
ago on the site of the old Odenkirchen
swimming baths. The name for this
green oasis in the Niersgrünzug came
from the Beller Mühle – a former paper mill.
Bresges-Park
Formerly an industrial site, home to the
Bresges spinning mills, it has now been turned into a recreational area. The
small park is adorned with a pond that
has become a popular meeting place
for builders of model ships.

Wickrather Schlosspark (Castle Park)
A regional Euroga 2002plus beacon
project, the 19 hectare park mirrors
the links between culture and landscape. The baroque-style moated castle
in Wickrath was built between 1746
and 1772.
The waters form a “coronet”, thereby
symbolising the standing and power of
the Imperial Count Otto von Quadt. The
“Carrot” – a redesigned stretch of the
river Niers – separated the outer bailey
from the main castle building. Today,
beds of blue flowers symbolise the historical course of the water and its level.
Rare ducks, kingfishers and herons have found a new home in Wickrath Park.
With its historic ambience and almost
300-year-old tradition as a centre for
horse breeding, after the return of the
‘Rheinisches Pferdestammbuch’ (regional equestrian association), it is now an
extremely attractive equestrian centre.
SCHWALM-NETTE NATURE PARK
The Schwalm-Nette Nature Park stretches along the German-Dutch border.
Founded in 1965, it has belonged to
the German-Dutch Maas-Schwalm-
Nette Nature Park since 1976. Lying
in lovely countryside, it is an important
regional recreational area, that lends
itself to great days out.

HOCKEY!
With the new WARSTEINER HockeyPark and two teams in the German national league, Mönchengladbach has at
least two good reasons for claiming to
be the capital of German hockey.
The most modern hockey stadium in
Europe and the only stadium in Germany capable of hosting World Cup matches offers ideal conditions for players
and accommodates about 12,000 fans.
With two artificial pitches, floodlights
and executive boxes, this is an ideal
venue for watching top-level sport live.
In addition to large sporting events,
e.g. international matches and tournaments, the WARSTEINER HockeyPark
will also be used in future for cultural
events such as pop concerts.

This increasingly popular sport is represented at the top level in Germany

Schützen
Traditional customs are rooted in people´s lives in the Lower Rhine and
Mönchengladbach Areas. An important
pillar of regional customs is represented by the ‚shooting fraternities‘, the
so-called ‘Schützenvereine’. More than
a few rifle clubs can point to a history
going back up to 700 years. The local
association of the Historische Deutschen Schützenbruderschaften (The
Federation of Historical German Shooting Fraternities) – the Bezirksverband
Mönchengladbach, Rheydt, Korschenbroich e.V. – is an alliance of 38 brotherhoods that cultivate the customs of
the Lower Rhine region in accordance
with the basic traditional principles of “faith, tradition
and country”.
The ‘Schützenfest’
(Shoo-
ting Festival) is the highlight of their
calendar. There is an annual competition to find the best rifleman who is
awarded the title of ‘Schützenkönig’
(King of Shooting) for a year. More
than 2.500 riflemen and musicians
form a procession through the city
that leads to the grounds of the city´s
Schützenfest. About 20,000 people in
Mönchengladbach are attracted to the
crowning of the king in the Minster and
the subsequent parade in his honour
in the Alten Markt (Old market place).
Ethnologists are particularly interested in the Mönchengladbach region
because of its strong Rhineland traditions, its diverse costumes and its
customs. This is no doubt why the
local brotherhood association is
also the biggest regional alliance within the Brotherhood
Federation.

Celebrating “Karneval” has long been
a Mönchengladbach tradition. What
makes Mönchengladbach special is
the fact that the big Karneval procession, in contrast to the rest of Rhineland´s
Karneval strongholds, does not take
place on “Rose Monday” (Rosenmontag) but a day later. 1936 saw the
start of this annual event with the
residents of Mönchengladbach exercising their right to act “as free as a fool”.
Initially seeking a modest tone, they
chose the name – “Veilchendienstagszug” (Violet Tuesday Procession)
– for this Shrove Tuesday celebration.
The violet stands for modesty and is
a flower that flourishes in secluded
places. The first Veilchendienstagszug
took place in 1936 and
the Karneval celebrations needed a “battle
cry”. With the help of
a resident´s questionnaire – over 1,000 suggestions were handed
in – the words
“Halt Pohl” were
d u l y chosen, which basically means “keep
going” or “stand up for others”.
It is now almost 70 years since the first
Veilchendienstagszug wound its way
through the streets of the town. Today,
it is organised by the Mönchengladbach “Karnevalsverband” (Karneval
Association), which is now comprised
of 40 separate Karneval societies.
Every year hundreds of thousands of
excited visitors line the approximately
six-kilometre long “fool’s lindworm

The sights of Mönchengladbach encompass a period of more than 800
years. The oldest historic building is
the 12th/13th century Minster on the

Haus Erholung
This late-classical building dates back
to 1861. It is a symbol of the town‘s
confidence during the 19 th century and
was founded by the “Erholung” Society,
which was started in 1801 by a group
of 43 manufacturers and commercial
townspeople. It was modelled on the
“French Clubs” of this time when much
of Germany was French-dominated,
and also on the intellectual and cultural groups of the Enlightenment period.
Today the building still serves as a stylish venue for conferences, congresses
and balls. In the cellar is the “Die Spindel” cabaret stage.
Haus Horst
Formerly a noble medieval family residence, the building was converted to
the new-gothic style in 1853 and today
houses a private clinic.

Klosterkirche (Convent Church) in
Neuwerk
In 1135 the Abbot of Gladbach founded a convent for Benedictine nuns in
Neuwerk, whose church is one of the
art history treasures of the town. Inside
the church is a 15th Century Gothic
Madonna, a triptychon (winged altar)
created by a pupil of Rembrandt (16301650), as well as paintings of the life
of Christ on the gallery balustrade and
intertwining motifs on the gallery’s
vaulted ceiling.
Abteiberg Museum
The Abteiberg Museum, designed by
Austrian architect Professor Hans Hollein, won the German Architecture
Prize and the Pritzker Award, the most
important international architecture
award, soon after its opening in 1982.
In addition to expressionist works and
works from the 1960’s - 1990’s, it also
has a large number of photographs by
Man Ray. The Sculpture Park in the
garden of the Abteiberg Museum is also very interesting. Three generations
of international sculptors transformed
this former abbey garden into a world
of discovery where art and nature complement each other perfectly.
Minster
The Basilica Minor, a Romanesque basilica with Gothic choir, dominates the
Abteiberg. Situated by the West Tower
and begun in 1180, the long nave and
two side aisles of the church were
completed during the early 12 th century. With the completion of the choir
under the direction of Cologne master
cathedral builder Gerhard, the church
was consecrated in 1275. The Bible
Window of 13th century is one of the
most important of its kind in Germany.

Odenkirchener Burgturm (Castle Tower)
The ‘Burgturm’ is the oldest building
in Odenkirchen and was originally part
of the complete medieval fortifications.
After the moated castle was destroyed
by fire, the lords of the manor, the
Merode family, decided to erect a
gatehouse, the present Burgturm,
which has been owned by the church
since 1920.
Rathaus Abtei (Abbey City/Town Hall)
In 974 Abbot Sandrad was looking for a
suitable place to establish a monastery
in Gladbach, as our town was known in
those days, and chose this spot. With
secularisation, the Benedictine Abbey
was dissolved in 1802. The monastery
building was then mainly used for cotton production. In 1835 the abbey was
bought by the city and transformed into
the town hall.
Propstei (Provost’s Residence)
This plain baroque building on the north
edge of the Abtei Garden was originally
a hospital, erected in the 14th century
under Abbot William of Orange.
Rathaus Rheydt (Rheydt City/Town Hall)
This imposing structure was built between 1894 and 1896 in the historic
style of the German Wilhelmenian Era
and was severely damaged during
World War II. Since 1977, when the
top of the town hall tower was rebuilt,
the citizens of Mönchengladbach celebrate their “Tower Festival” each year
around the town hall.
Rheydt Post Office
The post office on Odenkirchener Strasse
was built in 1897/99 and was extensively
restored a few years ago.

Schloss Rheydt (Rheydt Castle)
This castle, situated on the River Niers,
is the most important remaining repreexample of the domestic culture of the
nobility. Parts of the building go back
to the 10 th century and remain at the
core of the castle despite many modifications and extensions. Between 1560
and 1590 this moated castle was converted to the style of the Italian/Dutch
renaissance. The three-section castle
is defended by a wall and moat system
with five protruding bastions. The casemates, underground defensive structures in the protective walls, have been
accessible since the 1990’s. Schloss
Rheydt now houses the municipal museum and won the European Museum
of the Year Award in 1978.
Schloss Wickrath (Wickrath Castle)
Built between 1746 and 1772, this
baroque castle is situated in a park,
designed in the shape of a coronet,
and consists of a main building and
two outer baileys. For more than 100
years the bailey served as a Prussian
horse stud. The “Nassauer Stall” with
its cruciform design has recently been
extensively restored. On the site of the
baroque family residence, which was
torn down in 1859 because of its poor
structural condition, stands the former
stable-master‘s house of the Director
of the Stud. Wickrath Castle is now
a paradise for horse and rider. In the
summer of 2002 the ´Rheinisch Pferdestammbuch´ (regional equestrian
association) returned to its historical
roots after an absence of 91 years.
