A SPECIAL WELCOME TO OUR NEW PRINCIPAL!
DOVERCOURT PUBLIC SCHOOL Proud to be a TDSB Platinum Eco-School SCHOOL ADVISORY COUNCIL 228 Bartlett Avenue, Toronto, ON., M6H 3G4 [email protected] June 2013 Newsletter To the Dovercourt school communityA big thank-you to everyone who contributed to the Spring Fling and helped to make it such a success. The expression is that “many hands make light work”. While I don’t think anyone would describe the organization of the Spring Fling as “light work”, it certainly wouldn’t be possible without help from so many people. I hope everyone has an enjoyable and safe summer and we look forward to sharing stories at our “Welcome Back Breakfast”on September 11th. Heather Posgate SAC Chair SAC events such as Spring Fling helps contribute to the funding of extracurricular programming, music, sports and field trips and other activities that the school budget could not otherwise afford. Thank you everyone for another great fundraising year, Have a safe and happy summer. Thank you Dovercourt Students and Families for helping to make this year’s Spring Fling event the BIGGEST party on the block! The Dovercourt School SAC and Spring Fling Committee appreciates the support of the Dovercourt School families, businesses and organizations in making Spring Fling a great success. We would also like to acknowledge the support of the school administration and support staff; Mr Boulton, Mr Fazl, Debbie and Lisa, Bert, the school custodians and the teaching staff for their encouragement and assistance. Without everyone’s contributions, our school events would not be possible. A special THANKS to Toni Magaletta for her awesome job with the raffle ticket sales. It truly was our BIGGEST fund-raiser yet with totals so far exceeding $12,000 in funds raised. That is an amazing number with more funds coming in as we wrap up. Congratulations to all raffle prize winners and to the talented and creative students who participated in the Student Talent Show. Remember that many donors, vendors and families contributed to Spring Fling, please be sure to say “thanks” whenever you visit their businesses so they know that Dovercourt School appreciates their generosity. Joycelyn SAC Events/ Spring Fling Coordinator A SPECIAL WELCOME TO OUR NEW PRINCIPAL! With Mr. Bolton’s retirement, we know the TDSB has spent time finding our school a new principal who accurately matches all our educational / adminstrative and environmental requirements. Her name is Judith Kramer and she epitomizes the principal that we outlined in the School Statement of needs. She was recently VP at Carleton P.S. and before that Annette P.S. and has lots of experience at diverse K-8 schools. She was born and raised in downtown Toronto and lives close enough to the school that she is excited to be able to ride her bike to work (she has a very strong eco-background). This is her first Principal position. We are all very excited to having her join our Dovercourt community. SOCCER STARS! DOVERCOURT DRAGONS CRUSH THE COMPETITION TO BRING HOME THREE DIVISIONAL BANNERS! On June 6th, the Dovercourt Dragons 3 soccer teams (Grade 5/6 Co-ed, Grade 8 Girls, Grade 8 Boys) participated in the TDSB Conference Final tournament for our division. We are very proud to say that ALL of our three teams WON their Divisional Championships! Special thanks to all of the teachers who coached the students and the parents who volunteered. We could not have done it without you. Three new CHAMPIONSHIP banners now adorn the main hallway. Congratulations! The new trees planted in the west yard need your help for only one evening this summer - can you assist in watering the their new planters in the west yard? Karen Craine is setting up a watering schedule- and divided up into one good soaking a week, we need only 8 volunteers to come out on one convenient evening over the summer and water for half an hour. If you are able to help us establish these two young trees please contact Karen at [email protected] and she can slot you in on an date that works best for you! Thanks from the Green Team. The annual school Eco-day was a great success and enjoyed by all. Especially appreciated by teachers and parent volunteers was the assistance of the grade 7 & 8 students, at each of the stations. We look forward to seeing the older students take on more leadership roles in our Eco-endeavours. Have a great, green summer. Enjoy the outdoors. Try turning the A/C off occasionally and open your windows. It’s good for you...and the planet. Dovercourt SAC (Parent Council) Elections Do you want to become more involved and help guide enrichment and community efforts within the school? Our 2013 -1024 SAC elections will take place on Tuesday, September 10th, 6:30pm in the main floor staff room. Everyone is encouraged to attend. Many positions are open- from the simple Classroom Rep to the Co-chair. Most jobs really entail only a few hours a month. Here are some ideas. SAC Co- Chair (working with Heather Posgate)- Take turns chairing the monthly meetings Meet with/liaise with Principals on behalf of the SAC (Find out what is going on before everyone else does!) -represent the SAC at school functions (minimal public speaking) -Organize various SAC roles and delegate/coordinate tasks that need to be done (being Co-Chair does NOT mean that you need to be involved in everything that is going on!) -Liaise with parents, seek input/involvement from parent community Communications Officer- Get timely information about school and all events out to DPS community. Minute SAC meetings and post to list serve, communication boards, SAC board in the school, school website. Create monthly SAC newsletter with info supplied by school, teachers, other SAC members. Spread the news about events, greening, Eco team, Sports teams, art enrichment programs and initiatives, fundraising endeavours etc). Communication systems are already established. Events Officer- (most fun!) With an established team of co-coordinators, initiate, organize and supervise the major school events and fund-raisers that keep our kids in enrichment and keep us connected as a community. Events include, Welcome Back Breakfast , Movie Night, Danceathon, Winter Feast, and Spring Fling. You can help with just one, or work on a few over the course of the year- and you are never working alone- there is always a team to help plan and assist. Great way to get involved! Financial Officer- Preparing all bank documentation throughout the year. Prepare all floats. Prepare and record all deposits. Prepare, record and distribute payments for all expenses. End of year- send all relevant documentation showing all transactions to the board. Present monthly financial updates at SAC meetings. Greening! Join the Green Team with Karen Craine. Work in the school gardens once a month during the autumn and spring- dig, prune, plant, mulch, water, tidy. Plan new garden ideas! Food? Flowers? Native plants? Create more outdoor art! Natural playground equipment? Great for the mind and the body. Health and Safety- Easy-peasy job- organize one to two evening events at the school on relevant health topics for parents/kids. City of Toronto Health professionals can come in to talk, free of charge about a variety of subjects! Class Reps- get to know other parents of children in your childs class. Liase with them (via email) and the teacher and share your ideas with the SAC to initiate positive changes. Vitally important communication position but light on time commitment! Great starter role- only1- 2 hours a month! If you cannot devote consistent time we suggest you sign up to help out with just one event- all volunteers are very much appreciated. We cannot do this without everyone’s help. If you cannot make the September 10th meeting you can contact the SAC on [email protected] with your volunteer information. Dovercourt Summer Reading Challenge! Attention Dovercourt Students! The SAC would like to challenge DPS students to participate in a reading program over the summer break.
