A low profile—A low profile and more anatomically precise buccal tube minimizes occlusal interference, which can cause debonding and discomfort. True torque in the base—A direct result of precision manufacturing, each buccal tube allows the arch wire to be centered in the proper position on the tooth, thereby yielding the most accurate expression of the torque values. 17-4 stainless steel—Made of 17-4 stainless steel, the buccal tubes provide unsurpassed strength and wear. They also allow the hook to be bent several times without breaking. Funneled entrances—Each buccal tube has a funneled entrance to allow for easy insertion of the arch wire. Every time. Next-Generation Arch forms Maintaining original intercanine widths in orthodontic treatment is key to long-term stability.* That’s why Dr. Richard McLaughlin spent years studying patients’ natural arches to develop VIA Wires—the next generation of arch forms. Dr. McLaughlin’s philosophy of proper arch form selection is integral to predictable, patient-friendly treatment. VIA Wires are designed for a more anatomical fit and come in three unique shapes to help maintain the patients’ natural arch forms. WIRES YOU CAN TRUST We know you care about your patients. So choose the wire that will give them the smile they deserve. Appropriate Forces VIA Wires are available in a range of metal types and sizes for appropriate force at each stage of treatment: Heat-Activated NiTi Superelastic NiTi Beta Titanium Stainless Steel Heat-Treated Stainless Steel Precision Manufacturing VIA Wires are manufactured with precision and care. They are mechanically polished for smoother movement, laser inspected for shape and size accuracy, and each batch is tested for precise force values. The rigorous manufacturing and quality control steps ensure performance and predictability—every wire, every time. * Burke SP, Silveira AM, Goldsmith LJ, Yancey JM, Van Stewart A, Scarfe WC. This intensity will also penetrate porcelain and is capable of curing underlying resin cements similar to a quality halogen light. VALO Ortho Cordless uses VALO Cordless rechargeable batteries and a battery charger suitable for power outlets from 100 to 240 volts. The handpiece is designed to rest in a standard dental unit bracket or can be custom mounted using the bracket included in the kit. It can also be stored on a countertop or in a drawer. VALO Ortho Cordless is equipped with a sensor that registers movement of the light; when the light is not being used, VALO Ortho Cordless will automatically go into sleep mode and when moved will return to the most recently used setting. The customary two-position curing as shown above is not required with VALO Ortho Cordless. Its power and collimated beam cause the tooth underneath the bracket to illuminate, curing the resin. Hence, the clinician can achieve a complete cure from directly above the bracket without having to reposition. Use just two 3-second exposures with VALO in Xtra Power Mode for fast, complete curing. 54 VALO is the ideal light for indirect bonding. Both in the lab and during bonding, VALO’s unique Xtra Power Mode and convex glass lens offer a powerfully collimated beam that can penetrate the additional material and distance to sufficiently cure brackets through an IDB tray. 5942 VALO Ortho Cordless Kit 1 x VALO Ortho Cordless LED curing light 4 x Rechargeable batteries 1 x Battery charger 1 x Charging unit power supply 1 x Handpiece bracket holder 1 x VALO Cordless light shield 1 x Black Light lens 50 x Barrier sleeves 5939 Black Light Lens 1pk 5961 VALO Cordless Charging Unit Power Supply 5962 VALO Cordless Battery Charging Unit 5963 VALO Cordless Rechargeable Batteries 2pk 5964 VALO Cordless Barrier Sleeves 500pk 5929 VALO Cordless Light Shield 1. realityesthetics.com *Awards given to the traditional VALO. Certain medicines, tooth trauma, root fillings, and foods and beverages can cause tooth discoloration over time. Some discolorations are superficial while others are internal. Both can be effectively treated by a dentist; professional whitening is the best option to safely lighten discolored teeth. How does whitening work? The whitening process is possible due to the ability of the carbamide peroxide and hydrogen peroxide to freely pass through enamel and dentin and to permeate to all parts of the tooth.1 These peroxides break down into oxygen radicals, which migrate between the enamel prisms, breaking down any colored molecules that result in tooth discoloration. The structure of the tooth is not altered; the internal tooth color is simply made lighter. Whitening agents break down into tiny molecules and move in all directions, so even if the entire tooth is not covered with bleach, the entire tooth is whitened.2 Numerous studies have proven the effectiveness of peroxides in whitening teeth. Enamel, dentin, existing fillings, and bonding materials are not affected by the whitening agents, nor are they harmed by the whitening materials. Will whitening affect bond strength? Even though whitening agents release a great amount of oxygen into the tooth, existing bonds are not weakened.3,4 If whitening before bonding, allow a period of 7–10 days after whitening. The high concentration of oxygen in the tooth could significantly and adversely affect polymerization of the resins.5,6 How long do whitening results last? Whitening results are very stable, but depending on the patient’s nutrition and lifestyle habits, the procedure may need to be redone periodically. Due to the safety of the whitening agents, this should not concern the dentist or patient. Will whitening cause tooth sensitivity? Tooth sensitivity is a relatively common side effect of whitening. If sensitivity occurs, it is transient and disappears after the completion of whitening. However, most Opalescence products include PF (potassium nitrate and fluoride) desensitizing agents for additional comfort. Research has shown that just as hydrogen peroxide penetrates through the enamel and dentin and to the pulp, so does potassium nitrate. Potassium nitrate acts more like an analgesic or anesthetic by keeping the nerve from repolarizing after it has depolarized in the pain cycle.7 Fluoride acts primarily as a tubule blocker, plugging the holes and slowing down the fluid flow that causes the sensitivity. Will whitening weaken the tooth’s enamel? Opalescence whitening gel includes PF (potassium nitrate and fluoride). Potassium nitrate has been shown to help reduce sensitivity. Fluoride has been shown to help reduce caries and strengthen enamel. Together they help to improve the overall health of the teeth.8-12 Important: Dentist supervision is the best way to whiten! Tooth whitening treatments today are effective and safe if they are used appropriately and with the correct materials. This includes an initial diagnosis, professional teeth cleaning, briefing on the chosen whitening process, and monitoring of the patient during the treatment phase. Self-treatment by the patient with over-the-counter (OTC) products often does not provide the results desired. All products in the Opalescence system are medical products and are dispensed or released only by dental practitioners. 1. Haywood VB. You may need to adjust the steps depending on the patient and the whitening treatment you select. 1. Take patient’s medical history 5. Determine the initial tooth color Evaluate the origin of tooth staining and check for restorations that could affect the final result (use Rx if needed). Assess the intention of whitening system (cosmetic for generic “day-by-day” discoloration— medical devices for teeth discolored by disease, injury, or medical treatment). Consider amending your periodical medical history by adding a question about the patient’s satisfaction with their oral esthetics. Explain to the patient that restorations will not whiten, and discuss the necessity of possible new restorations after whitening. Check existing sensitivities, and perform an adequate treatment before starting a whitening procedure. Identify the initial tooth color with the aid of a VITA®* Shade Guide, rearranged as shown below. Take a picture of the teeth after the hygiene treatment and before the whitening, or identify color with patient’s active participation (with mirror in their hand) and document it. Ask the patient which whitening result is desired. DO NOT PROCEED IF THE PATIENT IS PREGNANT 2. Perform oral cavity exam Examine the patient’s mouth, evaluating the soft tissues and the teeth. There should be no microleakage under restorations, fractured teeth, or interproximal caries. 3. Manage patient’s expectations Evaluate the patient’s expectations, motivations, and attitude. Discuss the possibilities and limitations of whitening for their specific circumstance and help them to establish realistic expectations. 4. Perform hygiene treatment Proceed to the hygiene treatment. Use polishing paste to remove all exogenous pigments since plaque inhibits or reduces whitening agents’ efficacy. B1 A1 B2 D2 A2 C1 C2 D4 A3 D3 B3 A3.5 B4 C3 A4 C4 L I G H T * Trademark of a company other than Ultradent. D A R K 6. Gain patient’s consent Have the patient sign a consent form about the whitening treatment and cost involved, or reach other form of consent as appropriate. 7. Choose whitening product On the basis of the initial medical history, the kind of discoloration, and the patient’s expectations, recommend 1 or 2 whitening methods and reach consent with patient. Multiple Opalescence products may be used successively to best meet the doctor’s and the patient´s expectations. Follow instructions for use. If either Opalescence PF or Opalescence Go take-home systems are chosen, schedule periodical recalls/checkups. 8. Educate patient on achieving best results Instruct the patient to avoid food and drink that could stain the teeth for 24–48 hours after treatment. This includes coffee, tea, cola, red wine, fruit juice, and fruits. 9. Determine the final tooth color Identify the final tooth color using the VITA Shade Guide (rearranged as in #5). Take a picture of the teeth at the end of the treatment. A definitive color change can be recorded only a few days after the end of the treatment when the teeth are rehydrated and there is no peroxide left. 10. Provide fluoride treatment if necessary At the end of the whitening procedure, many dentists recommend a fluoride treatment. Avoid varnish applications (because the teeth should have the ability to rehydrate). Use Flor-Opal syringes if the patient has custom trays. opalorthodontics.com 71 Whitening Instructions ™ Opalescence® Go™ 10% PREFILLED WHITENING TRAYS - HYDROGEN PEROXIDE new 1.
