founded by Dr. Dan Fischer, who remains its president and CEO.

CERAMIC BRACKET SYSTEM
Offering esthetics and superior results, Avex CXi ceramic
brackets feature a low-profile design that enhances patient
comfort while minimizing occlusal interference. They are one
component of the revolutionary, evidence-based Avex Suite,
which incorporates years of research, case studies, and the
clinical teachings of Dr. Richard McLaughlin.
Avex CXi ceramic brackets feature
beveled white gold slot liners that
reduce arch wire notching caused
by the “sawing effect” in early
treatment stages.
Esthetic white gold slot
liners enhance strength
and reduce friction
Universal color identification
markings correspond with
Avex MX stainless steel brackets
Avex CXi ceramic brackets and Avex
MX stainless steel brackets both
feature the same in/out dimensions
for each tooth. This makes them
completely interchangeable and
significantly reduces the need for
compensating wire bends.
Purchase points on the tie wings
feature a patented shape that is
round for comfort and pointed
for easy ligation
Unique surface treatment on the

Patient Setup Tray
Make setup easier with disposable Opal Patient Setup Trays. The tray
provides a convenient way to organize bonding appointments with a
tape adhesive that leaves no residue, yet provides the right amount of
stick. Embossed tooth numbers and separated quadrants for 7 to 7
uppers and lowers make identifying the right bracket easy.

BUCCAL TUBES
The Avex Suite features the industry’s first CNC precision-machined
buccal tubes. Because Avex buccal tubes are made from high-tensile
stainless steel bar stock instead of powdered metal (used in MIM
buccal tubes), they are the smallest, strongest, and lowest-profile
tubes in the industry. Avex buccal tubes offer true torque in base,
maximizing torque expression and minimizing occlusal interferences.
The hook’s anatomical
bending stop can be bent in
the same place numerous
times without breaking
Distal notch has been removed,
and a score line for easier tying
has been included on most uppers
Computer-designed bonding pad shapes provide exceptional
anatomical fit with molars.
Special cutout on the face
assists with final positioning
All bbuccal tubes feature microetched,
80-gauge mesh pads, which provide
80-ga
optimal bond strength.

Second molar pads are available in regular
and mini. Mini sizes are ideal for bonding
on the mesial cusps of partially erupted
teeth.

Buccal Tubes and Bands
®
WELDABLE BUCCAL TUBES
Avex® BX buccal tubes feature:
Universal in/out dimensions—The buccal tubes work interchangeably with the rest of the Avex Suite appliances, including its molar bands, stainless steel
brackets, and ceramic brackets.
A low profile—A low profile and more anatomically precise buccal tube minimizes occlusal interference, which can cause debonding and discomfort.
True torque in the base—A direct result of precision manufacturing, each buccal tube allows the arch wire to be centered in the proper position on the
tooth, thereby yielding the most accurate expression of the torque values.
17-4 stainless steel—Made of 17-4 stainless steel, the buccal tubes provide unsurpassed strength and wear. They also allow the hook to be bent several
times without breaking.
Funneled entrances—Each buccal tube has a funneled entrance to allow for easy insertion of the arch wire.

Avex® BX Molar Bands
Individual Formed bands
®
MOLAR BANDS
Clinically tested for ideal firmness, each Avex BX molar band receives
optimum tempering to ensure ease of placement and proper fit.
Avex BX molar bands are based on Dr. Richard McLaughlin’s
unique in/out prescription and are part of the revolutionary Avex
Suite—the industry’s first set of completely interchangeable metal
and ceramic brackets.
Etched interior provides more
surface area for better bonding
and retention
High-quality mirror finish
is more esthetic than the
tarnished, dull look of
competitive bands
Flat interproximal walls for
reduced separation
Laser-etched numerical coding
helps provide quick identification
of band size and quadrant
Rounded occlusal and gingival
edges decrease tissue irritation,
improving patient comfort
Optimum temper is not too soft
and not too firm, so it improves
band seating and fit

ORTHODONTIC ARCH WIRES
VIA Wires give you the
stability you need for
predictable outcomes.
Every time.
Next-Generation Arch forms
Maintaining original intercanine widths in orthodontic
treatment is key to long-term stability.* That’s why Dr. Richard
McLaughlin spent years studying patients’ natural arches to
develop VIA Wires—the next generation of arch forms.
Dr. McLaughlin’s philosophy of proper arch form selection is
integral to predictable, patient-friendly treatment. VIA Wires
are designed for a more anatomical fit and come in three unique
shapes to help maintain the patients’ natural arch forms.
WIRES YOU CAN TRUST
We know you care about your patients. So choose the wire that
will give them the smile they deserve.
Appropriate Forces
VIA Wires are available in a range of metal types and sizes for
appropriate force at each stage of treatment:
Heat-Activated NiTi
Superelastic NiTi
Beta Titanium
Stainless Steel
Heat-Treated Stainless Steel
Precision Manufacturing
VIA Wires are manufactured with precision and care. They are
mechanically polished for smoother movement, laser inspected
for shape and size accuracy, and each batch is tested for precise
force values. The rigorous manufacturing and quality control
steps ensure performance and predictability—every wire,
every time.

mandibular intercanine width in treatment and postretention. Angle Orthod. 1998;68(1):53-60.

ORTHODONTIC ARCH WIRES
VIA Wires ™ SQUARE
Intercuspid Width
Dr. Richard McLaughlin drew on his 30 years of clinical experience
and research to develop VIA Wires’ innovative arch forms, which are
based on his philosophy that proper arch form selection is integral
to predictable, patient-friendly results. Designed for an anatomical fit,
VIA Wires feature square, ovoid, and tapered arch forms with unique
posterior widths, improved cuspid widths, and a natural shape. VIA
Wires are versatile and compatible with most prescriptions.

Arch Wires
Incredible Esthetics.
Matchless Performance.
With their attractive, natural-looking epoxy coating and improved anatomical fit, VIA Wires Pearl deliver stunning smiles both during
and after treatment.
Esthetic, Epoxy Coating Is Beautiful and Durable
Unlike competitors who use plastic or PVS on their esthetic arch wires, VIA Wires Pearl are coated in an attractive, durable epoxy that
chips less and lasts multiple appointments. When used in conjunction with Avex CX ceramic brackets, VIA Wires Pearl arch wires blend
beautifully with enamel, creating simply stunning smiles.
Next-Generation Arch Forms Deliver Optimal Results
Like the traditional VIA Wires, VIA Wires Pearl are designed for a more anatomical fit. Developed by Dr. Richard McLaughlin, they
come in three unique shapes—square, ovoid, and tapered—to help maintain your patients’ natural arch forms and promote long-term
stability and oral health.
Sleek-looking epoxy blends
naturally with enamel and
resists chipping.
VIA Wires Pearl are available in
Superelastic NiTi or Stainless Steel.

Spooled springs offer gentle, consistent opening forces in a 15w (38
cm) length. The coil spring provides optimal opening forces when
compressed between two brackets or two fixed points in the mouth.
Wire size is .010w (0.25mm). Lumen size is .030w (0.76mm).
500-033 NiTi Open-Coil Spring 15w (38cm) Spool
Nickel Titanium Closed-Coil Springs
Closed-coil springs are precision manufactured to close spaces with
predictable results. Nickel titanium closed-coil springs exert a gentle
force (around 200 grams), offering light, continuous forces across a
wide range of deflection. Eyelets, which have been polished smooth for
comfort, offer easy attachment to brackets, hooks, and TADs. Wire size
is .010w (0.25mm). Lumen size is .030w (0.76mm).
Kobayashi ties provide a quick tying feature when a preformed hook
is needed on a bracket. Wire is spot welded to maintain hook integrity.
Dead soft temper offers maximum workability. Available in long or timesaving pretwisted short ties. Wire size is .012w (0.31mm) for optimal
strength and workability.

HOOKS
Crimpable Ball Hook
Precision manufactured split crimpable ball hooks offer reliable
performance during treatment when elastics or extension springs are
needed. Also provides an effective alternative to preposted arch wires.
The ball hook may be crimped without removing the arch wire. Ball
hook is straight and measures 5mm from base to ball. The straight
hook may be bent in any direction. Fits round and rectangular wire
sizes up to .021w x .028w.
500-051 Crimpable Ball Hook - Straight - 10pk
With accurate, CNC-machined slots,
Avex brackets help you achieve beautiful,
board-standard finishes with less wire bending.
Crimpable Split Stop Strips
Offering convenient, secure stops that can be placed anywhere
along the arch wire, crimpable split stops limit tooth movement and
maintain proper wire positioning. Made of 304 annealed stainless
steel, split stops crimp easily, yet hold firmly to the arch wire. Ten
stops are provided on each strip. Fits round and rectangular sizes up
to .021w x .028w.
500-053 Crimpable Split Stop Strips - 10 per strip - 10pk
Research has shown that most brackets have oversized
slots.1 Avex brackets are made using a proprietary CNC
process that provides more accuracy than any other bracket.

Limiting tooth movement or providing anchorage, Micro Stops slide along
the arch wire to the desired position and are crimped with a Weingart,
cutter, or crimping instrument. The small size of Micro Stops benefits the
patient because of their comfort and esthetics. Available in two sizes,
which are selected based on the size of the arch wire. Small Micro Stops
fit arch wires up to .018w round or .016w x .016w. Large Micro Stops fit
arch wires larger than .018w round or .016w x .016w.
The Avex Suite also includes ceramic CX and CXi brackets and BX buccal tubes.

• Neutralizes acid etchants upon contact
• Protects soft tissues and adjacent restorations
• High contrast against tissues and acid etchants
• Rinses easily
When hydrofluoric acid contacts enamel during porcelain repair
procedures, formation of calcium fluoride occurs, and bond strengths
to enamel drop significantly. Therefore, it is vital to treat porcelain and
tooth structure separately with appropriate acids. EtchArrest isolates
hard and soft tissues when rubber dam placement is not practical.
• Hydrophilic properties facilitate deep penetration
into moist surfaces
• Unique, replaceable tip with fibers that fan out and
spread a thin layer of material over etched surfaces
• Syringe delivery offers precision and accuracy, minimizing waste

• Ultra-high-energy broadband LEDs cure quickly and completely

• Three curing modes—Standard, High Power, and Xtra Power—

• Extremely durable, slim, ergonomic shape allows unprecedented

• Intuitive, user-friendly timer controls

• Highly efficient LEDs and aerospace aluminum keep wand
body cool to the touch
VALO Ortho Cordless uses a custom, multiwavelength light-emitting
diode (LED) for producing high-intensity light at 395–480nm, which is
capable of polymerizing all light-cured dental materials. This intensity
will also penetrate porcelain and is capable of curing underlying resin
cements similar to a quality halogen light. VALO Ortho Cordless uses
VALO Cordless rechargeable batteries and a battery charger suitable
for power outlets from 100 to 240 volts. The handpiece is designed to
rest in a standard dental unit bracket or can be custom mounted using
the bracket included in the kit. It can also be stored on a countertop
or in a drawer. VALO Ortho Cordless is equipped with a sensor that
registers movement of the light; when the light is not being used, VALO
Ortho Cordless will automatically go into sleep mode and when moved
will return to the most recently used setting.
The customary two-position curing as shown above is not required with VALO Ortho
Cordless. Its power and collimated beam cause the tooth underneath the bracket to
illuminate, curing the resin. Hence, the clinician can achieve a complete cure from
directly above the bracket without having to reposition. Use just two 3-second exposures
with VALO in Xtra Power Mode for fast, complete curing.
54
VALO is the ideal light for indirect bonding.
Both in the lab and during bonding, VALO’s
unique Xtra Power Mode and convex glass
lens offer a powerfully collimated beam
that can penetrate the additional material
and distance to sufficiently cure brackets
through an IDB tray.

WHITEN YOUR SMILE - Questions Behind Tooth Whitening
There are many causes of tooth staining. Certain medicines, tooth trauma, root
fillings, and foods and beverages can cause tooth discoloration over time. Some
discolorations are superficial while others are internal. Both can be effectively
treated by a dentist; professional whitening is the best option to safely lighten
discolored teeth.
How does whitening work?
The whitening process is possible due to the ability of the carbamide peroxide
and hydrogen peroxide to freely pass through enamel and dentin and to
permeate to all parts of the tooth.1 These peroxides break down into oxygen
radicals, which migrate between the enamel prisms, breaking down any colored
molecules that result in tooth discoloration. The structure of the tooth is not
altered; the internal tooth color is simply made lighter.
Whitening agents break down into tiny molecules and move in all directions, so
even if the entire tooth is not covered with bleach, the entire tooth is whitened.2
Numerous studies have proven the effectiveness of peroxides in whitening
teeth. Enamel, dentin, existing fillings, and bonding materials are not affected
by the whitening agents, nor are they harmed by the whitening materials.
Will whitening affect bond strength?
Even though whitening agents release a great amount of oxygen into the tooth,
existing bonds are not weakened.3,4
If whitening before bonding, allow a period of 7–10 days after whitening. The
high concentration of oxygen in the tooth could significantly and adversely affect
polymerization of the resins.5,6
How long do whitening results last?
Whitening results are very stable, but depending on the patient’s nutrition and
lifestyle habits, the procedure may need to be redone periodically. Due to the
safety of the whitening agents, this should not concern the dentist or patient.
Will whitening cause tooth sensitivity?
Tooth sensitivity is a relatively common side effect of whitening. If sensitivity
occurs, it is transient and disappears after the completion of whitening.
However, most Opalescence products include PF (potassium nitrate and
fluoride) desensitizing agents for additional comfort. Research has shown that
just as hydrogen peroxide penetrates through the enamel and dentin and to the
pulp, so does potassium nitrate. Potassium nitrate acts more like an analgesic
or anesthetic by keeping the nerve from repolarizing after it has depolarized in
the pain cycle.7 Fluoride acts primarily as a tubule blocker, plugging the holes
and slowing down the fluid flow that causes the sensitivity.
Will whitening weaken the tooth’s enamel?
Opalescence whitening gel includes PF (potassium nitrate and fluoride).
Potassium nitrate has been shown to help reduce sensitivity. Fluoride has been
shown to help reduce caries and strengthen enamel. Together they help to
improve the overall health of the teeth.8-12
Important:
Dentist supervision is the best way to whiten!
Tooth whitening treatments today are effective and safe if they are used
appropriately and with the correct materials. This includes an initial diagnosis,
professional teeth cleaning, briefing on the chosen whitening process, and
monitoring of the patient during the treatment phase. Self-treatment by the
patient with over-the-counter (OTC) products often does not provide the results
desired. All products in the Opalescence system are medical products and are
dispensed or released only by dental practitioners.

Whitening Treatment Protocol
We recommend the following steps for professional whitening evaluation and treatment, both for cosmetic whitening and medical whitening. You may
need to adjust the steps depending on the patient and the whitening treatment you select.
1. Take patient’s medical history
5. Determine the initial tooth color
Evaluate the origin of tooth staining and check for restorations that
could affect the final result (use Rx if needed). Assess the intention of
whitening system (cosmetic for generic “day-by-day” discoloration—
medical devices for teeth discolored by disease, injury, or medical
treatment). Consider amending your periodical medical history by
adding a question about the patient’s satisfaction with their oral
esthetics. Explain to the patient that restorations will not whiten, and
discuss the necessity of possible new restorations after whitening.
Check existing sensitivities, and perform an adequate treatment before
starting a whitening procedure.
Identify the initial tooth color with the aid of a VITA®* Shade Guide,
rearranged as shown below. Take a picture of the teeth after the hygiene
treatment and before the whitening, or identify color with patient’s active
participation (with mirror in their hand) and document it. Ask the patient
which whitening result is desired.
DO NOT PROCEED IF THE PATIENT IS PREGNANT
2. Perform oral cavity exam
Examine the patient’s mouth, evaluating the soft tissues and the teeth.
There should be no microleakage under restorations, fractured teeth, or
interproximal caries.
3. Manage patient’s expectations
Evaluate the patient’s expectations, motivations, and attitude.
Discuss the possibilities and limitations of whitening for their specific
circumstance and help them to establish realistic expectations.
4. Perform hygiene treatment
Proceed to the hygiene treatment. Use polishing paste to remove
all exogenous pigments since plaque inhibits or reduces whitening
agents’ efficacy.

D A R K
6. Gain patient’s consent
Have the patient sign a consent form about the whitening treatment and
cost involved, or reach other form of consent as appropriate.
7. Choose whitening product
On the basis of the initial medical history, the kind of discoloration,
and the patient’s expectations, recommend 1 or 2 whitening
methods and reach consent with patient. Multiple Opalescence
products may be used successively to best meet the doctor’s and
the patient´s expectations. Follow instructions for use. If either
Opalescence PF or Opalescence Go take-home systems are chosen,
schedule periodical recalls/checkups.
8. Educate patient on achieving best results
Instruct the patient to avoid food and drink that could stain the teeth for
24–48 hours after treatment. This includes coffee, tea, cola, red wine,
fruit juice, and fruits.
9. Determine the final tooth color
Identify the final tooth color using the VITA Shade Guide (rearranged
as in #5). Take a picture of the teeth at the end of the treatment. A
definitive color change can be recorded only a few days after the
end of the treatment when the teeth are rehydrated and there is no
peroxide left.
10. Provide fluoride treatment if necessary
At the end of the whitening procedure, many dentists recommend a
fluoride treatment. Avoid varnish applications (because the teeth should
have the ability to rehydrate). Use Flor-Opal syringes if the patient has
custom trays.

White Mac tip
#1480 - 500pk - pg 92
• Removes superficial white and brown stains
• Provides minimally invasive treatment for fluorosis
• Comes in a direct, mess-free delivery
• Provides one-appointment results
• Has been called a “practice building” product
• Autoclavable OpalCups minimize splatter
Opalustre is a 6.6% hydrochloric acid slurry that contains silicon
carbide microparticles. This combination provides chemical stain
removal along with gentle mechanical abrasion. OpalCups latch-type
bristle polishing cups are used with the Opalustre microabrasion
technique to facilitate a more aggressive action and minimize splatter.
OpalCups finishing cups are used with Opalustre for micropolishing the
newly treated enamel surface. Both types of OpalCups are autoclavable
through a limited number of cycles.
(Courtesy of Dr. Renato Herman Sundfeld)
Before and After
Remove or significantly reduce mild to moderate decalcification related to orthodontic
treatment with a few applications of Opalustre. Apply with stiff bristle cups and 10:1 gear
reduction handpiece with firm pressure.

DESIGNED
TO DELIVER
The chemistries you use are different. Some
are chemically activated, needing to be mixed
immediately before delivery. Others have
varying viscosities. Each chemistry you use is
designed for a specific purpose. Shouldn’t the
same be true for your tips?
Opal Orthodontics makes tips designed to
deliver each chemistry we create. Whether
you’re delivering a viscous gel or thick
impression material, we make the perfect tip
for the job. And since our tips are engineered
on-site, we test each design to ensure it works
perfectly with the chemistry it’s intended for.

CUPS, DISKS, AND POINTS
• Effectively cleans in hard to reach areas
• Tight fibers help to prevent messes and apply appropriate pressure
• Ideal for use with Consepsis Scrub
The STARbrush is excellent for cleaning areas with restricted access.
It was designed to clean intracoronally as well as extracoronally
before bonding fillings, inlays, onlays, and crowns. Use the STARbrush
with Consepsis Scrub to remove residual temporary cement without
abrading the gingiva. There is no match for STARbrush’s access to
Class I, II, III, IV, V, and endodontic access preparations. It also cleans
around orthodontic brackets or prior to sealant placement. Use
STARbrush with a disinfectant or Ultrapro Tx prophy paste.
