Case builds for federal probe of City Hall
Chicago mourns woman killed by cop as lawyer’s deception and mayor’s influence raise new concerns
By Erick Johnson
A city attorney hides information in court
then quits after being exposed. The mayor’s
overwhelming power and influence in police
matters draw concerns, despite new reforms
to improve fairness and transparency. More
lawsuits from controversial police killings
have been filed. The problems continue to
grow, and in the Black community where
anger has been pervasive for weeks, the patience of many is wearing thin.
With new incidents rocking Mayor Rahm
Emanuel’s administration, the possibility of
an expanded federal probe into City Hall is
growing. As problems mount for the mayor,
funeral homes in the Black community are
busy preparing victims of police shootings for
burial.
One of the victims, Bettie Jones, was laid to
rest on Wednesday after a two-hour funeral at
New Mount Pilgrim Missionary Baptist
Church on the city’s West Side. Prior to the
funeral, a steady stream of mourners viewed
Jones’ body during the wake. She was buried
in a red casket, in an elegant red dress with a
tiara and scepter in her hand. Her children
wore red as well, their mother’s favorite color.
When it was time to close the casket for
the final time, one of her daughters,
LaTonya, began to wail as she repeatedly
yelled, “Mommy.” Her cries echoed
throughout the ornate sanctuary while
many wiped away tears during an intense
service that was filled with sadness and
anger.
“My mama didn’t deserve this,” Latonya
cried. “The day after Christmas, the police
took my mama from us for no reason. All
she tried to do was help them and this is
how she gets repaid? We’re hurting right
now, we’re crying because of these police.”
Chicago’s Black clergy, community leaders
and activists were among the 250 mourners
to bid farewell to Jones, a beloved matriarch

Dee Hall (not his real name) was sentenced to 10 years in prison for a drug
case. He spent nearly five years in Cook
County jail fighting the case before copping a plea and serving seven months in a
downstate prison. Now legitimately employed, Hall said during his time as a drug
dealer, he often did business with those in
the illegal gun trafficking business. Police
say guns used in the majority of Chicago
shootings and murders come from illegal
traffickers.
“My knowledge comes from running the
streets. The drug and gun side, they work
hand-in-hand on the same corners. The
workers on your corners selling the drugs
need to protect themselves and you run into people who legally go and get guns and
then they sell them on the streets after reporting them stolen,” Hall said. “They
shave off all of the serial numbers so the
police can’t identify them. I was dealing

Hardiman switches to write-in for County Clerk’s race
Plans to run as a
write-in candidate
By Chinta Strausberg
Activist Tio Hardiman last
Thursday confirmed he has
dropped out of the Cook County
Clerk of the Circuit Court race
but plans to win as a Democratic
write-in.
“I am running as a write-in,”
said Hardiman even though he
submitted 11,800 signatures, of
which he needed 5,365 good signatures. He admits his numbers
were not the best; however, he is
still bristling over Alderman
Michelle Harris (8th Ward) allegedly challenging his petitions.
“I don’t feel good about it,” said
Hardiman. “I met with Alderman
Harris before and she told me she
did not want to go to battle with
me. She kind of deceived me by
challenging my petitions.
“When you look at Alderman
Harris, you’re looking at Rahm
Emanuel. Dorothy Brown hasn’t
done anything to anybody,”
Hardiman said.
“I hope I go down in history as
the first write-in candidate to win
that office, and I am going all the
way.”
Last March, Hardiman ran for
governor and received close to 30
percent of the state’s vote winning
30 counties downstate.We racked
up 125,500 votes. “It was the
first time I ran. It made me a viable candidate,” said Hardiman.
“I am a real champion for the
people. I wasn’t surprised that the
machine challenged me. They
make it so hard (and) impossible
for people like me to run. I have
no solid respect for her because
she didn’t keep her word to me.”
Hardiman said Harris can’t deny she challenged his petitions
because “Her daughter and her
family members were checking
my signatures. Harris is an extension of Emanuel and everything
wrong with the city of Chicago.
She was indirectly involved in the
cover-up of the Laquan McDonald case because she didn’t speak
up. The last thing we need is a
Rahm Emanuel-controlled Cook
County Circuit Clerk Court.”
Efforts to reach Alderman Harris failed and Clerk Brown failed.

When contacted, former Alderman Shirley Coleman, who is also running against incumbent
Dorothy Brown, said she too is
being challenged by Harris and
does not know her petition status.

who died after she was gunned
down by a Chicago Police officer
on Dec. 26.
Police were called to the home of
Quintonio LeGrier, a 19-year-old
college student who was allegedly
holding a bat when police arrived.
Police killed LeGrier, but they also
killed Jones, a friendly neighbor
who lived on the first floor of the
building. She opened the door for
police, who then shot the 55-yearold mother. Jones died as she was
wheeled into Loretto Hospital.
While police called Jones’ death
an accident, many in the Black
community don’t believe the claim.
On Tuesday, the family of Jones
filed a wrongful death lawsuit
against the city and Chicago police.
On Dec. 28, LeGrier’s family filed a
similar lawsuit accusing the officers
of using “excessive and unreasonable force.”
On Dec. 8, the father of Phillip
Coleman also filed a wrongful
death lawsuit accusing Chicago police of using unjustifiable force
when they tasered his son 18 times
before dragging his unconscious
body out of a cell at Cook County
Jail.
The lawsuits add more heat for
Emanuel, who has been the target
of repeated calls for his resignation
by protesters. The demands have
been made since last November
when the city released the dash-cam
video showing Officer Jason Van
Dyke shooting 17-year-old Laquan
McDonald 16 times.
The McDonald case helped spark
the U.S. Justice Department to
launch an investigation into the
Chicago Police department in December to determine if the force has
engaged in a “pattern of practices”
against civilians.
2
Since the announcement, Black
religious and civil rights leaders have
called on U.S. Attorney General
Loretta Lynch to expand the probe
to City Hall and the agency that investigates police shootings: the Independent Police Review Authority
(IPRA). Lynch has yet to respond
to the calls.
Those calls grew louder on Monday, Jan. 4 when U.S. District Judge
Edmond Chang overturned a jury’s
verdict that cleared Chicago Police
Officers Raoul Mosqueda and
Gildardo Sierra. The two killed
Darius Pinex during a traffic stop in
2011. Chang ordered a new trial for
the officers after ruling that Senior
Corporation Counsel Jordan Marsh
“intentionally concealed” crucial
evidence and then misled the court
about his reasons for doing it.
The evidence was a recording of a
radio dispatch that gave a description of a different Oldsmobile Aurora that did not match Pinex’s car
and was not wanted in connection
with a shooting. Marsh said he
didn’t learn about the recording until a week before the trial began.
When the judge asked Marsh why
he did not disclose the existence of
the recording as soon as he found
about it, Marsh backpedaled, saying
it hadn’t crossed his mind that the
evidence would be helpful to the
plaintiffs.
The judge also found that Marsh’s
co-counsel, city attorney Thomas
Aumann, failed to make a reasonable effort to find the dispatch
recording during the pre-trial or discovery process.
As a result of Marsh’s deception,
the judge imposed sanctions against
the city and ordered them to pay
the plaintiff’s hundreds of thousands of dollars in attorney fees before the new trial begins. Hours af-
SATURDAY, January 9, 2016
ter the judge’s ruling, both Marsh
and Aumman resigned.
Like the McDonald case, there is
growing concern that there may be
other instances in the city’s lethal
force cases. On Monday, Emanuel,
at first, laughed after he was asked
should the DOJ federal probe be expanded to the city’s legal department. When asked again, the mayor
said an expanded probe is not needed as reforms are being made to improve oversight of cases.
Despite Emanuel’s reforms, many
in the Black community still believe
Emanuel should resign or the DOJ
should expand its probe as the first
step to cleaning up City Hall. For
the city to truly heal and achieve real
transparency, the city’s deeds must be
exposed and dealt with.
There are also concerns about the
mayor’s power and influence in
IPRA and other matters involving
the city. Many remain weary that the
mayor continues to handpick appointments at IPRA and other city
boards amid public distrust of his
leadership and political ambitions.
At an IPRA press conference, reporters pressed acting head, Sharon
Fairley, with questions about IPRA’s
independence from the mayor’s influence, but she gave little assurance
that the agency would operate on its
own. Out of nearly 400 cases, IPRA
has disciplined only two officers for
misconduct.
“IPRA is not independent, and
that’s part of the problem,” said Arlene Coleman, president of the 101year-old Cook County Bar Association, the oldest African-American
bar association in the U.S. “The
mayor has authority to approve people to that board. There’s never been
an effort to seek recommendations
to the board; there is the disconnect.”
Melvin Brooks, an attorney and
member of the Cook County Bar
Association, agreed.
“Historically, IPRA has been a rubber stamp when it comes to disciplining police officers. I think it’s
good that there’s going to be change.
But, there have been changes before,
and you get all these promises and
what happens is we continue the cycle. I hope that’s not the case this
time around.”
The organization held a press conference on Monday to outline its
10–point plan for criminal justice reform in Chicago. The organization
also hosted a community town hall
meeting at Trinity United Church of
Christ on Thursday to address police
shootings.

New Year brings new laws to Illinois
By J. Coyden Palmer
Each year, the state enacts new
laws that have been passed the
previous year. With the new year,
Illinoians are faced with an onslaught of new laws that became
effective January 1. A total of 237
new laws ranging from crime to
protocols for concussions in youth
sports are now on the books. The
Crusader has highlighted a few of
the important, confusing and
some just downright quirky laws.
Traffic Ticket Increase
Because law enforcement agencies around the state will now
equip more officers with body
cameras, a $5 increase in moving
violation fines for drivers has been
added. The monies will be used to
pay for the body cameras, which
cost about $300 a piece plus a $55
a month storage fee for the data
that is recorded. Mayor Emanuel
has vowed to add more cameras to
the Chicago Police Department in
the wake of all of the violent encounters between police and citizens in the last year. The fee increase does not apply to parking,
pedestrian or paperwork violations.
Carbon Monoxide Detectors
in Schools
In response to an incident that
occurred at a southwest suburban
school last year, all schools are now
required to have carbon monoxide
detectors. Already required in residential buildings, school districts
across the state are scrambling to
install the devices in their facilities
to comply with the new code. On
October 30 of last year, nearly
100 kids at a grammar school on
the North Side were rushed to the
hospital after becoming sick from carbon monoxide fumes. On December
3, another 70 students from Horace
Mann on the South Side suffered the
same fate. In response to these and other incidents around the Chicago area,
Governor Bruce Rauner signed the
bill into law. A spokesperson for
Chicago Public Schools said all
school buildings are in compliance
with the law and credited the
alarms at Mann for warning administrators to a problem caused
by a heating furnace. Over 5,000
detectors have been deployed district-wide, according to CPS.
Concussions and High
School Athletes
The state has instituted several
new laws in an attempt to cut
down and better understand concussion injuries among high
school athletes. Concussions have
become the greatest medical concern in all of youth sports with
soccer, football, wrestling, hockey
and cheerleading having the most
incidents among athletes. Now,
coaches, referees and administra-

Rauner
tors are required to be educated
on how to notice possible concussion symptoms. In addition, referees in some sports have the authority to remove a player from
the game if they suspect a concussion. The Illinois High School Association, which governs high
school sports in the state, has been
requiring referees to report possible concussions for nearly three
years during games. But critics
have said that many athletes sustain the injury, which is caused by
a severe jarring of the brain inside
the skull, during practices, thus
the reason for the State’s actions in
educating coaches.
Fake 9-1-1- calls are Costly
People who think it is a joke to
prank a 911 call will now find it
no laughing matter in Illinois. If
found guilty of this crime you can
be fined up to $10,000. The law
was implemented in response to
incidents nationwide after people
have pranked law enforcement
agencies in an activity known as
“Swatting.” The dangerous activity has prompted S.W.A.T teams
and bomb squads to be sent out
on many false calls. The crime
takes away resources from real
emergencies said a spokesperson
for the Illinois State Police and
puts the public in danger as officers respond to these calls at a priority speed.
Animal Cruelty Law
Expanded
Our four-legged friends are getting more protection in 2016.
Leaving a pet in extreme conditions like heat or cold for an extended period of time that puts
the animal in danger could now
net you a fine. The new law is
more specific and allows authorities to arrest owners who leave
pets in hot, unattended cars or
out in the cold. It is now a Class A
misdemeanor. Animal control officers in Cook County say they
have seen an increase in people
leaving their pets in extreme conditions in recent years.

ing on the street you pay a higher
premium but I always bought my
guns brand new so that I knew they
didn’t have any bodies (murders) on
them.”
Originally from the West Side, Hall
used to have a valid FOID card,
which is required to purchase a gun
legally in Illinois. He said there were
very few limitations to what he could
have gotten his hands on legally or illegally. He said the main states supplying Chicago’s streets with guns are
Mississippi, Georgia and Indiana.
“If they have family members in
other states, they can also transport
guns to Chicago. And you also can
get guns from people in the military
with access to weapons and every
once in a while people get lucky when
they ‘hit the tracks’,” explained Hall.
“Hitting the tracks” is when a group
of individuals rob freight cars parked
in train yards in the Chicago area.
Last June, two men, Warren Gates
and Alexander Peebles, were hit with
federal charges after an April caper
they were allegedly involved in, which
111 semi-automatic guns were stolen
from a Ruger cargo train car parked in
a rail yard at 8000 S. Chicago Avenue
on April 2. Six of the guns stolen that
day were later recovered in other unrelated crimes.
www.chicagocrusader.com
Hall said some people with valid
FOID cards will not buy guns anymore because laws have been passed
that crackdown on “straw purchases.” But he said every time there is a
law passed, the streets just adjust their
tactics and within a day or two business is back up again.
“So what we’re seeing now are peo-
ple with FOID cards, not buying the
guns, but they are buying the bullets
because you need a valid FOID card
to buy those in Illinois,” said Hall
with a casual laugh. “That way the
straw purchasers stay in business.
The laws actually made it safer for
straw purchasers because a gun
could be traced back to them, bullets
Blacks Must control their own coMMunity
can’t. You see what I’m saying nothing
can really be done with these gun
control laws they keep passing.”
Hall also said dope addicts with
valid FOID cards often are used to
buy the weapons. Although illegal, serial numbers are usually filed off or the
barrel of the gun is altered to throw off
the ballistics tests if the gun is ever recovered by police.
Hall said another way people get illegal guns is through unscrupulous, rogue
gun dealers in the area. If a licensed
firearms dealer is ever caught selling
guns illegally, they could face a long
prison sentence. But Hall said there are
some dealers who will risk it all.
“Every gun store owner is not 100%
legit,” Hall said. “Black people don’t
have access to the manufacturers. So it
takes someone behind the counter or
behind the scenes to get some of these
guns. It’s the same thing with the drug
trade. We don’t have access to heroin
or cocaine but it gets here.”
Hall said he commends the President for trying to do something about
gun violence but believes it is now too
little, too late. He said the time for action was when he first got in office
and when Democrats had control of
Congress. He said Obama has not
done much for his home state and he
is disappointed in the President because he does not understand how
the streets work.
“I hate to say it, but what he did
the other day is not going to be too
effective,” said Hall who has a bachelor’s degree from a state university.
“Some of the stuff is going to be
ruled unconstitutional; the mental
health component will be challenged because it is dealing with people’s private medical records. He’s going to get blocked because he is
going up against major corporations
that have been supplying this company with billions of dollars a year
for decades. You think they want to
put tighter restrictions on guns?”
Hall himself says he is active now
in the options exchange and one of
the stocks he is constantly investing
in is Smith & Wesson and other gun
manufacturers. He said the African
American community has been so
uneducated on guns that they are
missing out on profiting from the
legal sales of them. On the day of
President Obama’s executive order, stock in Smith and Wesson
rose two percent.
In part II, Hall discusses what
the President can do to be more
effective on this issue, how the
Black community needs better education on guns and offers his
own solutions to the city’s gun violence.

WE MUST FIGHT
ON TWO FRONTS
One thing is certain as we examine our lives on this planet,
and that is the fact that we very seldom face just one dilemma.
Often, our challenges are more complex than that. And as it is
true in our individual lives, it is also true in our communities.
The Black community in America is facing a conundrum; we
are battling enemies from without AND within. If we don’t
address both external and internal foes, we will not win. Life
needs balance; focusing on one issue at the exclusion of the
other is an unbalanced approach. If there is to be a victory in
this case, it would be a pyrrhic one at best. We would succeed
on the one hand and go down in flames on the other.
Though the Black community does face many challenges,
there are two that are demanding the lion’s share of attention
right now: the police, and by extension, the establishment, is
killing our people with seeming impunity. Anytime a police
officer can gun down, in cold blood, a twelve-year-old boy
who brandished a toy gun without the officer getting serious
consequences bodes ill for the Black community. Looking
back, police murders of Blacks and other minorities have occurred thousands of times during the last 10 years.
Conversely, Black gangsters are killing themselves and others
in large numbers. This problem is just as serious as the one
wherein rogue law enforcement officers are seemingly on the
attack. Because of our notions of white supremacy and because
of the power dynamic between Black and white people, we
sometimes tend to focus more on the Black lives lost at the
hands of white oppressors than we do on Black oppressors. It is
ironic, therefore, that while we march and demand others to
take note that “Black Lives Matter,” we are ignoring the carnage that is going on in our communities right under our
noses. Indeed, Black lives seem to matter only some of the
time, especially where whites are involved.
Herein lies the conundrum: if the community is successful in
its opposition to oppression by law enforcement with the objective of taking some of the teeth out of the sting of rogue
cops, Black gangster oppressors will probably become more
emboldened because they know that the eyes of the community are focused on white oppression. This might give them the
freedom they need in order to increase their attack on a now
vulnerable community that cannot necessarily rely on establishment law authority who are now under the microscope of
scathing public opinion. In a case such as this, who will the
community turn to when Black people are robbed, killed,
raped or otherwise manhandled by their own?
There has been a reorganization of the Black gangster
arrangement in the Black community. Gangs have become decentralized. It is not how it was in the old days wherein one
could rely on a Larry Hoover or a Jeff Fort to control the ranks.
Today, gangs have split into factions and neighborhoods, i.e.,
block by block, and this is now the defining element as to what
“gang” a person belongs. There is no central authority that can
reign in the rogues. Because of this, things might become even
worse than the situation wherein a 9-year-old boy in Chicago
was recently targeted for assassination allegedly because of actions attributed to his gang-affiliated dad.
The bottom line is that we will have to simultaneously fight
on two fronts against both the enemies from within and those
external to the community if the community is to survive and
thrive. We must march as vigorously against Black gangster
thugs preying on the community as we do against white, uniformed thugs with the authority to kill. Any other approach
would be unbalanced, and the consequences would be deleterious. A luta continua.
It was just over a month ago
when young people across Chicago
were providing hope that they were
the answer to taking on the system.
The starting point of the Black Friday protest drew a lot of praise
from Black people of all ages and
many income levels. It looked like
injustices weren’t going to be
silently accepted any more by the
Black community. It also looked
like someone besides Rev. Jesse
Jackson or Fr. Michael Pfleger
could rally the troops. No doubt it
had to be pretty heady for the millennials, who suddenly could see
themselves on CNN or the front
page of a newspaper a thousand
miles away.
In the last couple of weeks, unfortunately, we have seen what
usually happens to movements
that start out strong but don’t have
a long-term strategic mission. Instead of several groups continuing
to move ahead in unison, we got
different groups making different
demands but using the same protest or as they call them disruptions. So, for people looking to
connect with or support the movement they found themselves confused by what the movement was.
Rather than appearing as a welloiled machine as it initially did,

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Can the
“movement”
be revived?
Dear Editor:
now it looks more like a collection
of parts waiting to be assembled.
I truly hope, but am not sure it
can be revived. One young man
seems to have emerged as a spokesperson for the collective. He was
given a platform at Mosque Maryam to explain what this movement
is about, but not much about how
others can be supportive.
These young people should be
persistent in attempting to get the
mayor to resign. They also need to
be realistic and accept they need
more than protests, disruptions
and traffic tie-ups to achieve such a
lofty goal. They need the support
of the people they claim are out of
touch or have sold out-Black Baby
Boomers.
The protests have attracted a
sprinkling of boomers, but more
would be involved, in my opinion,
if the demonstration organizers
struck a more conciliatory tone toward the elders and sought their
advice. What is happening in Chicago is very similar to actions of the
Civil Rights movement – an era
most, if not all Black boomers, are
far more familiar with than the
teens and 20-somethings heading
up protests. I think the advice and
support we can lend will be close to
invaluable. They call us elders and
because the elders want to help
doesn’t mean we are interested in
taking away their leadership. At the
root of it, they are our children and
grandchildren and we only want
them to succeed.

It is Time to Deal with Concussions
Beyond the Rhetoric
By Harry C. Alford
First let me make a recommendation. You all should see the current
movie “Concussion.” Actor Will
Smith will probably get an Oscar
for his role. He plays Dr. Bennet
Omalu who links mental illness to
football. His claim is that a high
number of football players experience concussions and a noticeable
number of them end up with mental disorders and extreme depression.
He coined the term for this prognosis – Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE). He obtained
support from other doctors and submitted his finding to a prestigious
medical journal. It was accepted.
That is when the National Football
League found out about his research
and all hell broke loose.
The NFL tried to discredit him.
They hounded him and his wife.
They actually had the FBI harass
him and one of his partners. Then
they pushed him out of Pittsburgh.
Nearly broken, he left for California.
But his study could not be refuted
and the general public, as well as
football players started speaking up.
The movie has a happy ending.

The first football player to catch the
attention of Dr. Omalu was Mike
Webster. I first met Mike on the University of Wisconsin campus. It was
my senior year and Mike was a
freshman center. Freshmen could
not play varsity athletics at the time
so Mike and the other freshmen
were “practice bait” for the upper
classmen. I love football; which is
what led me to be a football player.
Mike was probably born to play
football. We were impressed by this
freshman who could handle the
best of us during scrimmaging. We
weren’t wrong. Mike went on to
star for the Pittsburgh Steelers. He
was selected to the Pro Bowl every
year he played and at the end he
walked into the Football Hall of
Fame. Such a great rise to fame followed by a lifetime of sorrow and
tragedy.
After football something started
happening. People figured he had
lost his mind – homeless, living in a
vehicle, drugs and liquor. “Strong
Mike” eventually died with most
people in Pittsburgh assuming
steroids was the cause. It was not!
Dr. Omalu performed the autopsy
and discovered the reason. His
brain was a total mess. Finally, he
surmised it was due to the violence
to the head for ten straight years.
He went on to prove this and that
for two other Pittsburgh Steelers.
Concussions were common within my football experience. During
my high school days, I guess I delivered a few of them to opposing
teams. In college, I received a few
light ones and one big one that put
me into the hospital. Team doctors
were in denial as well as the coaches.
The coaches would conclude “he
got his bell rung.” They would
overlook the possibility of serious
long-term harm. “Learn to endure
pain” was the mantra of one of my
high school coaches.
When the pressure of the NFL
Players Association (union) led into
a class action lawsuit, the NFL finally caved in. More than 5,000 current and former NFL players joined
in the action. It was settled and players and veterans are now being compensated. After years of denying it,
the NFL finally admitted that there
is truth in Dr. Omalu’s study. The
sham was exposed when Dave
Duerson, NFL Hall of Fame and an
NFL executive, which made him a
corporate insider, committed suicide. On his night stand he left a letter which explained his deep depression and conclusion that something
was wrong with him. He donated
his brain for analysis.
The great Hall of Fame running
back, Tony Dorsett, talks about his
experience. Without warning he
will lash out at family members and
get violent. He states, “When there
is a family get together and I show
up my two daughters gather their
children and leave.” He can’t stop
these explosions and he is terribly
depressed about it.
OK. So now we all believe that the
problem exists. The NFL has created a process known as “Concussion
Protocol.” No one disputes the
problem. But yet, there appears to
be no effort being made to solve the
problem.
There must be a wellfunded and
organized effort to find a cure and a
prevention. The key to prevention
lies in the football helmet. We must
find a way to make it shock proof.
The brain has no padding around it.
Sudden shock makes it move
around bouncing into the scull. The
accumulation of such shock alters
our mind. There are plenty of us
walking around and may be in danger. Remember the effects don’t
show until later. I pray that I don’t
emulate others like Tony Dorsett.
Even worse, like my college buddy
Mike Webster. There were two other
teammates of mine that went out in
similar fashion.
Let’s find the road to prevention.
The sooner, the better.

The Real Objection to Paying College Athletes
By George E. Curry
George Curry
Media Columnist
As the University of Alabama
football team prepares to line up
against Clemson University Jan. 11
in Glendale, Ariz. to decide the national collegiate championship, it’s
worth noting that the Crimson
Tide wouldn’t be “rolling” in success and the money that accompanies it without its Black players, led
by 2015 Heisman Trophy Winner
Derrick Henry.
According to the New York
Times, in 2003, the University of
Alabama’s athletic budget was $37
million. Today, it is more than four
times that - $153 million. Nick Saban, Bama’s head coach, receives a
salary of $7 million a year. The university gets $9 million this year in
licensing fees alone, a figure that
will total $103 million through
the 2024-25 season. Learfield
Sports guarantees Alabama up to
$14 million a year for multimedia
rights, including programs and
game-day radio headsets.
Bryantnny Stadium in Tuscaloosa has been expanded twice to
reach 101,821 seats and 31,000
people are on the waiting list for
season tickets. There is also a long
line of companies waiting and
willing to pay six-figures for a luxury suite.
The Tide is rolling in cash.
Having grown up in Tuscaloosa,
I know all too well that until Alabama Gov. George C. Wallace
www.chicagocrusader.coM
George E. Curry
was forced to end his “stand in the
schoolhouse door” at the university
in 1963 and allow two Black students - Vivian Malone and James
Hood — to enroll, Blacks could do
menial work at the Capstone, but
could not attend classes or serve on
the faculty or as administrators.
In 1955, the United States Supreme Court ordered the University
of Alabama to admit its first
African American, Autherine Lucy,
who was represented by future
Supreme Court Justice Thurgood
Marshall. On Friday, February 3,
1956, Lucy enrolled as a graduate
student in library science. The uni-
versity barred her from using the
dining hall and living in the student
dormitories on campus.
On the following Monday, whites
rioted and Lucy was suspended,
supposedly for safety reasons. Federal courts ordered her reinstated on
Feb. 29, but she was expelled on the
grounds that she had slandered the
university.
After Malone’s forced admittance,
Blacks began attending the University of Alabama in greater numbers.
Blacks are star athletes at ‘Bama and
a couple have served as president of
the student body, which is 81.6 percent white.
But the University is no different
from other major white universities
that exploit its athletes for financial
reasons. According to the NCAA,
most of the football and basketball
players at the university level are
African Americans.
The Washington Post recently reported: “With the money made
from college sports increasing every
year, the way colleges treat their athletes has become controversial.
“That’s because college sports is a
tremendously lucrative business for
everyone but the athletes. The National College Athletic Association
(NCAA) will receive $7.3 billion
from ESPN for the right to broadcast the seven games of the College
Football Playoffs (CFP) between
2014 and 2026, and $11 billion
from CBS and Turner Sports to
broadcast “March Madness” over
the next 14 years.
“Individual colleges also make out
Blacks Must control their owcoMMunity
well: The University of Kentucky’s
men’s basketball team’s trip to the Final Four this year, for example,
brought more than $8 million in revenue to the universities of the Southeastern Conference (SEC). Each of
the ‘Big 5’ conferences will make an
estimated $50 million from the college football playoffs this year.
“And none of this counts the money made from concessions, merchandise and licensing fees.” The collegiate merchandise market reportedly
takes in $4.6 billion each year.
The most disturbing part of the
Post article was not that majority
white universities are profiting from
the sweat of Black athletes - that’s
been obvious for years. What’s insulting is the reason most people object
to college athletes being able to share
in the financial gains they make possible.
The newspaper stated: “In a statistical analysis that controlled for a host
of other influences, we found this:
Negative racial views about Blacks
were the single most important predictor of white opposition to paying
college athletes.
“The more negatively a white respondent felt about Blacks, the more
they opposed paying college athletes.”
Are you shocked?
So was I. And it’s hard to shock me,
an African American who grew up
in segregated Tuscaloosa in the shadows of the University of Alabama.
The Post story said, “In every survey to date, Blacks are far more likely to support paying college athletes
when compared to whites. For instance, in the 2014 Cooperative
Congressional Election Study (CCES),
53 percent of African Americans backed paying college athletes - more
than doubling the support expressed
by whites (22 percent).”
So when you see rabid - and often
drunk - white fans cheering after another touchdown scored by Alabama’s Derrick Henry or a touchdown
pass thrown by Deshaun Watson,
Clemson’s Black quarterback, in next
Monday night’s championship game,
don’t be misled. They love it as long as
the Black athletes are bringing in millions for the University of Alabama’s
athletic department or the sports
program at Clemson, but the athletes don’t deserve to get much more
beyond their athletic scholarships
for one reason - the color of their
skin.
Sounds like we have not made as
much progress since Autherine
Lucy was forced out of the University of Alabama as we had thought.

DR. WADE W. NOBLES AT CCICS
Dr. Conrad Worrill, Director/Professor, Carruthers Center for
Inner City Studies (CCICS), located at 700 East Oakwood Blvd,
Chicago, Illinois, 60653, 773268-7500, Fax: 773-268-3835.

@CCICS_Chicago.
Dr. Conrad Worrill
On Friday, January 22, 2016,
the Jacob H. Carruthers Center
for Inner City Studies of Northeastern Illinois University in Chicago, 700 East Oakwood Boulevard, will present Dr. Wade Nobles
in a lecture on his new book, The
Island of Memes: Haiti’s Unfinished
Revolution. The lecture will be held
in the Donn F. Bailey Legacy Hall
at CCICS. Doors open at 6:00
p.m. and the program begins at
6:30 p.m.
Dr. Nobles is an internationally
acclaimed African centered Psychologist, researcher, educator, and
author. In this regard, Dr. Nobles is
Professor Emeritus in Africana
Studies and Black Psychology at
San Francisco State University and
is a founding member and past
president (1994-95) of the Association of Black Psychologists. He is
also the founding Executive Director of the Institute for the Advanced Study of Black Family Life
and Culture, based in Oakland,
California, where he has spent
over forty years researching, documenting, publishing, designing,
and implementing African Centered service and training programs. He has served as a visiting
professor in Salvador de Bahia and
Sao Paulo in Brazil.
Additionally, Dr. Nobles is the
author of over one hundred articles, chapters, research reports,
and books, and is the co-author
of the seminal article in Black
Psychology, “Voodoo or IQ: An
Introduction to African Psychology.” He is also the author of
African Psychology Toward Its
Reclamation, Reascension, and Revitalization: Seeking the Sakha
Foundational Writings in African
Psycho- logy, an anthology of over
thirty years of African centered
research.
Dr. Nobles, in discussing his latest book, The Island of Memes:
Haiti’s Unfinished Revolution, will
address the following questions:
What is the significance of the
Haitian Revolution for all humanity? What is the condition of
African people throughout the
world? How do we heal shattered
consciousness and fractured identity? What role will African people
play in the future?
Dr. Nobles explains that “this
work is guided by the additional
belief that a critical task and challenge of the African-centered
scholar/intellectual is to identify
and promote the interests and image of African and Africa’s children by understanding the past,
present, and future of our human
story through the Africanization
of the epistemological, terminological, aesthetic and hermeneutical groundings of the scientific,
artistic and investigative disclosure.”
Continuing, Dr. Nobles writes
that “Likewise, the African centered psychologist must simultaneously understand the past, present, and future of African and
Africa’s children and center the
analytical, therapeutic process,
and rehabilitative discourse in an
African episteme and praxis.”
In this regard, Dr. Nobles writes
“Using the Haitian Revolution as
a case study exemplar, this manuscript examines Haiti at a critical
period in time to discuss the role
consciousness and identity played
in its liberation struggle and the
formation of nationhood. In asserting itself as an independent
and authentic scientific discipline, Black psychology is utilized, herein, to understand not
only the Haitian mind in conflict
but the African mind struggling
for liberation worldwide.”
In 1985, the late great African
centered scholar, Dr. Jacob H.
Carruthers, wrote the book, The
Irritated Genie: An Essay on the
Haitian Revolution. This African
centered groundbreaking analysis
of the Haitian Revolution has
provided a foundation for Dr.
Nobles in his recent book on the
Haitian Revolution.
Dr. Carruthers wrote that,
“The liberator of Haiti, Jean
Jacques Dessalines, in his speech
accepting the office of Governor
Genera for Life of the newly Independent Black Nation, referring to the possible attempted invasion of Haiti, asserted that
upon their approach…
The irritated genie of Haiti
looming out of the bosom of the sea
Appears, his menacing face rouses
the waves, stirs up storms and his
mighty hand smashes or scatters
their ships.”
Taking this concept from Dr.
Carruthers’ work, Dr. Nobles also explains that “the Haitian Revolution via the energy (spirit) vibrations embedded in the
Irritated Genie.”
I encourage the community to
come out in full force on Friday,
January 22, 2016 at CCICS to
hear this lecture by Dr. Wade
Nobles on his profound book—
The Island of Memes: Haiti’s Unfinished Revolution. Look forward
to seeing you. For further information call 773.268.7500.
COMFORT OR JUSTICE?
By Julianne Malveaux
NNPA Columnist
Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
once wrote, “It may be true that
the law cannot make a man love
me, but it can keep him from
lynching me, and I think that’s
pretty important.” Those students who are protesting campus
racism need to keep that quote in
mind as they assert their right to
feel safe and comfortable on
campus. When the protests have
been well defined and include an
end game, such as the University
of Missouri protests that toppled
a President and Chancellor, they
have been effective. When protests broadly address issues like
comfort, they are less successful.
And while it is satisfying to force
a President (or a faculty member
for that matter) to resign, the
conditions of campus life will
not necessarily change because
there is a new leader. Structural
racism is so firmly embedded in
our culture that it will take years,
if not decades, of focused work
and commitment to eliminate it.
Unfortunately, too many are less
dedicated to eliminating institu6
tional racism than they are to
maintaining the status quo. Consider, for example, the rhetoric
during these Republican Presidential debates. Or, consider the
clumsily racist question Supreme
Court Justice Antonin Scalia posed when he asked whether Black
students should attend “lesser
schools” than schools like the
University of Texas.
Student activism was one of the
highlights of 2015. Without waxing nostalgic, though, I’d suggest
that some of these young activists
take a page from the playbook
written in the late 1960s and early
1970s, when protests shut campuses down for weeks. Student
protests led to curriculum review
on some campuses, the development of academic departments
like African American studies and
Ethnic Studies, the addition of
faculty of color, a commitment to
enroll more students of color, and
more. “Back in the day,” we were
far less concerned with “feeling”
comfortable than with being empowered. We wanted change, and
we were willing to fight for it.
And, the change we wanted was
tied to metrics. More scholar-

ships, more faculty, more student
admits. Not necessarily more
comfort.
From my perspective discomfort
is a good thing. Discomfort is a
sign that something is wrong.
Clearly there is much that is
wrong on our campuses and in
our nation. Racism is alive and
well, though it shows itself in different forms than it did decades
ago. The signs don’t say “white” or
“colored” anymore. Few “civilized” whites use the n— word,
but expletives are hardly necessary
when there is a coded language of
exclusion.
Too many of us prefer complacency to discomfort. We prefer to
think that everything is fine. Too
many would like to pretend that
inequality and injustice are minor
matters until a headline shakes us
out of complacency – a young
man shot 16 times while he is on
his back, a young woman supposedly hanging herself in a jail cell.
Then there is protest, and anger,
and rage. Still, too little done to
develop a sustainable attack on the
racism that plagues our nation.
Student activists of 2015 could
learn from the sixties’ activists,
and they can also teach “mainstream” leaders twenty-first century organizing techniques. And
across generations, there must be
teaching and learning about complacency and discomfort, about
what change looks like, and about
what people are willing to give up
to get change.
This 2016 election year promises lots of conversation about jus-
Blacks Must control their own coMMunity
tice and change. Some political
leaders will talk of “overregulation,” while others will suggest
that we must pass new laws.
Some will suggest that affirmative
action is no longer necessary,
while others are clear that there
remains unequal access to higher
education. When questions of
law are debated, I find it useful to
consider Dr. King’s view of law –
it won’t make you love me, but it
will keep you from lynching me
and, as he said, “that’s pretty important.” Dr. King described
himself as a “drum major for justice,” not a drum major for comfort. The campus activists who
are raising critical questions are
motivated by justice and cannot
allow themselves to be sidelined
with conversations about comfort. Comfort will always be elusive in a racist society. And that’s a
good thing.

ComEd is warning customers to
be on the alert for scam artists
claiming to be a ComEd representative seeking payment.
Over the last few weeks, the
company has seen a tremendous
increase in reports from small businesses and some residential customers who have been contacted
by scam artists. From November to
December 2015, ComEd saw a
260 percent jump in the number
of reported scams. When compared to December 2014, the
number of reported impersonations increased more than eight
times the previous year’s figure.
Scammers are contacting customers by phone and in-person
claiming to be ComEd representatives and telling them their service will be disconnected unless
payment is made. They instruct
the individual to wire funds or
buy a prepaid credit card and call
them back with the personal
identification number (PIN).
Variations of the scam include
stories that the customer’s billing
cycle has changed and payment is
needed immediately, or that the
account is past due and immediate payment is required to avoid
disconnection of service, or that
the customer’s previous payments
were not accepted or processed.
“ComEd wants to protect its
customers from these types of deceptive schemes. It’s not current

practice for ComEd to ask a customer to purchase a prepaid credit
card or to make a payment on a
bill,” said Fidel Marquez, senior
vice president of Governmental
and External Affairs, ComEd. “If
customers are ever unsure about
the status of their accounts, they
should always contact ComEd for
verification.”
ComEd is committed to keeping our customers informed and
provides scam alert information
via a variety of communications
channels including website, social
media outlets, press notifications
and direct marketing materials. As a
result of the heightened scam reports, the company will increase its
communication efforts and continue working with the Illinois Commerce Commission (ICC) to advise
customers on the appropriate way
to prevent scam situations.
The ICC is advising customers
that in most cases utilities are required to provide advance notice
prior to disconnection of service
and when in doubt customers
should call the utility or visit its

payment methods.

Partnership to insure admission to U of I College of Engineering
High school seniors planning to
attend Moraine Valley Community College are eligible for guaranteed admission to the prestigious
College of Engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign through a new Engineering
Pathways partnership. Incoming
freshmen must be starting at
Moraine Valley in the 2016-17 academic year.
The partnership provides an opportunity for students with a genuine interest in any area of the engineering field to earn a degree from a
top-ranked program. Students who
are accepted into the program must
be full-time and are required to
complete a pre-determined set of
courses within three years while
maintaining a 3.3 grade point average at Moraine Valley.
Completing the first two years of
the engineering curriculum at Moraine Valley will save a student an estimated $17,000 a year in tuition
alone (based on 2014-15 tuition
and fees). Substantially higher savings are expected when room and
board costs are factored in. The
Moraine Valley Foundation also offers numerous scholarships to its
students.
“We have worked with the College of Engineering at UIUC to
bring world-class engineering education to our district’s students at an
affordable cost,” said Panos Hadjimitsos, assistant dean of Science,
Business and Computer Technology at Moraine Valley. “All of the
classes students are required to take
at Moraine Valley are taught by
our expert faculty, and we will provide superior support services to
ensure the success of qualified participants, including dual advising.”
Advisors from both Moraine Valley and the University of Illinois will
jointly advise students through- out
the program to ensure the requirements are being met before they
transfer.
Admission to the partnership is
competitive to ensure entering students are most likely to succeed. A
successful Engineering Pathways
participant has mostly A’s and B’s
in high school, participates in numerous extracurricular and/or work
experience in an engineering-related field, prefers personal attention,
and wants to cut down on cost.
The median ACT composite score
is 29.
“We’re really proud of this program. It provides students with a lot
of academic resources and opportunities, including a chance to attend
a top five engineering school in the
country,” said Joe Waranyuwat, advisor at the College of Engineering
at the University of Illinois.
Women and students who are
low-income, first-generation to go
to college, from underrepresented
ethnic groups, and in the Moraine
Valley district are strongly encouraged to apply, although the program is open to any graduating high
school senior.

teams registered, De La Salle placed
seventh.
The First Tech Challenge (FTC) is
designed for those who want to
compete head to head, using a
sports model. Teams of up to 10
students are responsible for designing, building, and programming
their robots to compete on a 12 x
12’ field in an alliance format
against other teams. The robot kit is
reusable from year-to-year and is
programmed using a variety of languages. Teams, including coaches,
mentors and volunteers, are required to develop a strategy and
build robots based upon sound engineering principles.
Among the benefits gained by students participating in the First Tech
Challenge are designing, building
and programming robots; applying
real-world math and science concepts; developing problem-solving,
organizational and team-building
skills; competing and cooperating
in alliances at tournaments; earning
a place at the world championship
and qualifying for over $11 million
in college scholarships.

10 students from the Lourdes Hall
Campus for Young Women and the
Institute Campus for Young Men,
will compete in another First Tech
Challenge on January 23 with the
primary goal of qualifying for the
regional competition.
“The really great thing about the
first competition was that it was
everyone’s very first experience,” De
La Salle faculty member and Robotics Club moderator Ian McNair
said. “We now know what to expect
and how to better prepare for the
next (competition).”
MEMBERS OF DE LA SALLE’S Robotics Club participate in the recent First Tech Challenge
qualifier at Francis Parker High School. Front Row: John Mills (Ukrainian Village), Aaron
Funes (Englewood), and Adam Vazquez (McKinley Park). Middle Row: Derek Davis (Hyde

The Big Short sheds bright light

I went to see the movie “The

one for 80 percent of the purchase
price, the other covered the remaining 20 percent, allowing home buyers to purchase a residence, in many
cases, without investing one dime
of their own.” (For them, it was

lenders.” After discovering that
the big banks knowingly approved unqualified homebuyers

bankrupt the big banks, by

“For homeowners during that era,
it continues to be, no doubt, painful, as all properties lost value. For
future homeowners, let it be a lesson to become more educated before entering into a home loan.”
All four of the main actors
weren’t all that unsympathetic to
the situation. A-lister Pitt, who
played Ben Rickert, portrayed a
conscience for what he was doing.
Bale played Dr. Michael Burry,
who was portrayed as the first financier to come up with the plan
to bet against the American economy; Carell played Mark Baum,

Jimmy Lopez’s ‘Bel Canto’ resumes at Lyric Opera of Chicago after holidays

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
The long-awaited opening of Jimmy Lopez’s “Bel Canto,” Lyric
Opera of Chicago’s seventh fulllength operatic world premiere
Monday, December 7, was met
with multiple curtain calls and a
standing ovation by the audience
and instant critical acclaim by local
and international journalists.
Composer Jimmy López (music)
and Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Nilo Cruz (libretto) are the
creators of “Bel Canto.” Lyric’s music director Sir Andrew Davis con-
ducts the new opera curated as long
ago as 2011 by Lyric’s creative consultant, soprano Renée Fleming.
“Bel Canto” is directed by Kevin
Newbury and based on the bestselling novel of the same name by
Ann Patchett. The production is designed by David Korins (sets/debut), with costumes by Constance
Hoffman (debut); lighting by Duane Schuler; and projections by
Greg Emetaz (debut).
The idea of commissioning a new
opera originated as long ago as 2010
during talks with creative consultant
Fleming who wanted to see a new
piece performed. After reading
Patchett’s novel, “Bel Canto,” Fleming gave it to composer Lopez (a
teenager when the actual hostage
situation occurred) who, in turn,
engaged librettist Cruz to do an
adaptation of the 300-page novel.
Patchett gave the team free license
to create the new piece and after further consultation with conductor
Miguel Harth-Bedoya, Patchett,
Fleming and Lyric’s General Manager Freud, Lopez began composing

the opera ready for the 2015-16 season.
The novel and opera, both fictional in content, were inspired by the

held in Peruvian prisons) and stars
internationally-acclaimed soprano
Danielle de Niese as an American
opera diva Roxane Coss who is performing at a diplomatic gathering
in Lima, Peru when terrorists invade. The hostage situation becomes a siege when government
forces surround the compound,
trapping the insurgents and their
captives for months on end. In this
scenario and during the counting
off the days of the siege, music
emerges the prime factor that nullifies former hostilities and alliances
begin to form between captors and
captives. Music becomes the common language that eventually transcends the eight languages spoken
by the captors and captives, uniting
them in unexpected alliances.
Powerful performances are delivered by de Niese for whom the role
of Roxane was written; bass-baritone Jeongcheol Cha/Lyric debut
(Japanese industrialist Katsumi
Hosokawa); tenor Andrew Stenson/debut (translator Gen Watanabe); and mezzo-soprano J’nai
Bridges who portrays the role of the
guerilla Carmen with dramatic intensity and vocal splendor. Tenor
Rafael Davila (debut) as General Alfredo; tenor William Burden as the
Peruvian vice president Rubén Iglesias; bass-baritone Bradley Smoak as
General Benjamín; countertenor
Anthony Roth Costanzo (debut) as
César; and baritone Jacques Imbrailo (debut) as Messner, the Red Cross
intermediary for the hostages, captors, and government officials, are a
few of the twenty main characters
caught up in this intrigue. Michael
Black’s Chorus members effectively
perform roles as additional characters within the story.
“Bel Canto” was created with
funds from the Prince Prize for
Commissioning Original Work,
which was awarded to Jimmy López
and Lyric Opera of Chicago in
2013.
“It’s been exciting to collaborate in
bringing this new work from a bestselling novel to a multifaceted performing arts experience,” says
Davis. “The story is an ideal subject
for opera – people in an adverse situation brought together and transformed by music. There are some
beautiful arias, including one sung
in Japanese. It’s a powerful drama.”
“Bel Canto” has its own very individual voice,” says Freud. “It’s accessible, it’s theatrical, and it’s extremely
moving. The subject matter of “Bel
Canto” is extraordinarily topical, to
a greater extent than any of us could
have imagined.”
“Bel Canto” resumed performances Tuesday, January 5. The final
three performances are Wednesday,
January 13 at 7:30 p.m.; and Friday,
January 8 and Thursday, January 17
at 2:00 p.m. For tickets and information call 312-827-5600 or go to

NU’s Bienen School of Music presents
20th Winter Chamber Festival
Seven-concert series includes
treasured classics and
compelling new works
The Banff 2013 prizewinning
Dover Quartet — the Bienen
School of Music’s quartet-in-residence — and Banff 2004 prizewinners — the Jupiter String Quartet
— are both scheduled to perform
during the 20th season of Northwestern University’s annual Winter
Chamber Music Festival.
Presented by Northwestern’s
Henry and Leigh Bienen School of
Music, the 2016 Winter Chamber
Music Festival began Friday, January 8 with The Lincoln String
Quartet playing works by Haydn,
Shostakovich and Brahms. The seven-concert series will conclude with
a special performance at Sunday,
February 7 at 7:30 p.m. by the
Zukerman Trio, led by renowned
Israeli violinist Pinchas Zukerman,
whose artistry is recognized worldwide. It will be the fourth time that
Zukerman has participated in the
Bienen School’s popular Winter
Chamber Music Festival.
Other 2016 festival guest ensembles will include the Grammynominated chamber orchestra A
Far Cry, and groups comprised of
distinguished member sof the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and Bienen School of Music faculty. Made
possible in part by the Elizabeth F.

Blair Milton, a violinist and Bienen School faculty member since
1984, is artistic director of the Winter Chamber Music Festival. He also is a founding member of the
Evanston Chamber Ensemble and
has been a member of the Chicago
Symphony Orchestra since 1975.
“This season’s festival will include
three wonderful string quartets: the
Dover Quartet, our quartet-in-residence; the Jupiter Quartet, returning to the festival stage for the third
time; and the Lincoln Quartet,”
Milton said.
The Bienen School’s new quartetin-residence, the Dover Quartet,
will take the stage at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, January 10. Since winning the
Banff International String Quartet

“The Jupiter Quartet will be
playing Bartók’s String Quartet
No. 4, one of the most difficult in
the repertoire on Friday, January
22 at 7:30 p.m.,” Milton added.

SPIRITUALLY SPEAKING
A Moment to Super Size Your Thinking
By Effie Rolfe
Look to the Son. “…I will lift
up mine eyes unto the hills, from
whence cometh my help (Psalm
121.1).” This theme came to
mind when I looked at a plant in
my house and recalled observing
that no matter where I put the
plant it would always lean in the
direction of the sun. Of course,
we know that all plantation and
human species need this great
natural light for nourishment
and growth. If we must have natural light to survive, how much
more are we in need of the spiritual light and life of God’s son,
Jesus Christ? I believe that physical nourishment is not sufficient
for a healthy life, we also have
spiritual needs. Too often we try
to fill life’s void with external
sources that can only be supplied
by and through God’s love. No
amount of drugs, people, places
or things can ever take the place
that our heavenly Father has
specifically designed for you. Just
as your natural parents adore you,
His love runs amazingly deeper
than you could ever imagine. The
minute we become aware of this,
I believe the journey of living
your best life begins.
As we walk in 2016, let us lean
more and more to the Lord’s ways
and desires. We desperately need
God’s wisdom, direction and protection each day and in every way
(Proverbs 3:5-6). It’s ok to ask,
Lord what would you have me to
do…? According to Jeremiah
29:11, God wants the best for
your life. His plan is to prosper
you and not to harm you, to give
you a hope and a future. Let’s forever keep our eyes on his love,
mercy, grace and salvation Be it
your career, family, friends, ministry, education or business everything that concerns you should be
in alignment with God’s will and
purpose pertaining to your des-
Effie Rolfe
tiny. The best way to get started is
to simply ask and believe. Prayer
is a simple conversation between
you and your number one friend,
God. It will surprise you what
happens when you have faith in a
God that loves you and wants to
bless you more than eyes has seen,
ears have heard and more than
you have ever imagined (1 Corinthians 2:9).
Interestingly, here are a few facts
about God’s natural light—the
sun to rule by day and the moon
by night. The sun is reported as
being the largest star among millions within the Milky Way. The
sun lies at the heart of the solar
system, where it is by far the
largest object. It holds 99.8 percent of the solar system’s mass and
is roughly 109 times the diameter
of the Earth — about one million
Earths could fit inside the sun.
The intricate design of God’s
handiwork bursts forth through
this brilliant—bronze—celestial
body of light that so generously
provides beauty, daylight, health
and happiness. Oh what great
love the Father has for you. Now,
think about it…God created the
sun to light the world, yet the Son
of God, who loved me and gave
himself for me is the light of the
world (John 3:16; 8:12).
As you move into this year God
is waiting to give you clear directions for his plan and purpose
concerning your best life. Also, he
will keep you safe and warm.
Are you leaning towards the
Son…?

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
he wants to give all cops
Tasers, as though that will stop
the killings.
The way Rahm Emanuel
seems to think, these cops will
suddenly reach for their stun
gun instead of their Glock because he wants a less-deadly
police force. That is just funny
that this man who is supposedly so smart can fix his mouth to
say that. Yes, there is evidence
that in some cities police

shootings have gone down crisis intervention training
when all of the cops got Tasers (CIT). Not even 20 percent of
AND proper training. With the cops on the job have had it.
Chicago’s financial picture, we It is far less expensive than this
know it will be either or, and training the mayor is talking
the training is not really part of about.
Someone needs to demand
the equation.
Does anyone know why the mayor explain how a broke
Emanuel would try to dupe us city is going to buy the stun
with this nonsense of every- guns. Then demand an answer
body gets a Taser and every- on how is the training going to
body gets training? The city al- be paid for.
Finally, the mayor should tell
ready ran out of money for
all of us what happens to a cop
or cops who decide they want
to use their guns instead of a
Taser and another unarmed,
non-threatening Black youngster is killed. We know the
odds have been nothing happens to those cops. Maybe being forced to tell the truth for a
change might be so painful to
Rahm Emanuel he would
prefer to resign.

Natalie Cole’s special bond with Chicago is unforgettable

wide, and was the first female
singer to have two Platinum albums
in the same year. Natalie also received nine Grammy Awards and
was nominated a total of 22 times.
She won three American Music
Awards, two NAACP Image
Awards, was nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award, received a star
on the Hollywood Walk of Fame,
and her 2013 Spanish language album, “En Espanol” was even
nominated for the Latin Grammy’s “Album of the Year.” She performed with everyone from Johnny Mathis to Earth, Wind and
Fire, and from Frank Sinatra to
Whitney Houston, appeared on
television shows such as “I’ll Fly
Away” and Law & Order: Special
Victims Unit, and she even made
an appearance on RuPaul’s Drag
Race, serving as a Guest Judge.
But, at no time would anyone ever
think of calling her a “diva,” “difficult,” or demanding. She was simply, “Sweetie” who enjoyed more
than anything music and performing. There was nothing that
brought her more joy than discovering a new song, making an ‘old’
song ‘new’ or hearing a song by a
new singer or musician that she really enjoyed….and Natalie would
delight in telling you about her discoveries whether it was 3:00 in the
afternoon…or 3:00 in the morning. When Natalie called you could
do nothing but listen and at the
end of the day, you were just as excited as she was!
Supremely talented, yet fragile…
accomplished, yet insecure…driven, yet careless, Natalie Cole has
been there and done it all. She has
known both upper-class privilege
as a member of one of entertainment’s most famous families…and
even poverty on the streets of New
York City. But she was always most

the rest as they say is history.
There’s no need to re-visit the
demons Natalie had to overcome
or the failed marriages. They’re all
in the past and only came to serve as
learning experiences. After forty years
of bringing joy, happiness, and countless hours of entertainment to others,
Natalie Maria Cole, has now left an
imprint that is truly “unforgettable
“on not only the world of entertainment, but also her charitable endeavors such as the Save The Children
Foundation, MusiCares, the National
Kidney Foundation and the Nat King
Cole Generation Hope Foundation.
Natalie Cole always felt that she had
an angel on her shoulder that protected her and looked out for her. There
have been angels in my life. While
they haven’t arrived with a blast of
trumpets or a rustle of wings. I’ve
known them just the same. As one of
my angels, Geoffrey Holder would
say, “Natalie’s not gone…she’s just
on tour.”
at home hanging out on the Southside of Chicago, especially at
Glady’s Restaurant before it
closed…shopping at Water Tower
Place while wearing a big hat and
sunglasses (she always thought no
one would recognize her in that disguise…it never worked!) or on a
hunt for the “best” peach cobbler in
town. While married to Reverend
Marvin Yancy, Pastor of the Fountain of Life Baptist Church, every
Sunday found Natalie (a “lapsed
Episcopalian” as she fondly referred
to herself) causing traffic jams outside the church on 43rd Street and
South Cottage Grove Avenue, with
fans hoping to get a glimpse of her
fulfilling her duties as “The First
Lady” because that is what she
loved to do.
As the daughter of the legendary
entertainer Nat King Cole and an
elegantly reserved, upwardly striving mother Maria, Natalie who
grew up with her three sisters, Carole (“Cookie”), Casey, and Timolin, in addition to her brother
Nathaniel (“Kelly”) was the mischief maker in the family who delighted in music. As a little girl, she
once unexpectedly wandered onstage during one of her father’s performances and often would slip unnoticed into his casual ‘jam’
sessions with Count Basie, Louis
Armstrong, Ella Fitzgerald, or anyone else who just happened to stop
by their Hancock Park home.
After attending the University of
Massachusetts and the University
of Southern California, to study
Child Psychology, Natalie was bitten by the urge to become a performer. Not many people know it,
but the legendary performer Jerry
Butler actually gave Natalie her first
job as his opening act and introduced her to two members of his
Songwriter’s Workshop, Chuck
Jackson and Marvin Yancy,…and
