Phoenix Mayor Stantion Accepts Award
As #1 In The U.S. In the Reduction of Petroleum Fuel
15 years ago, people were throwing eggs and tomatoes at cars with HOV alt-fuel license plates. Today, Phoenix leads the
Nation in the use of alternative fuel.
Is this important? Or is this just a feel good recognition?
Let’s look at benefits of alternative fuel. Consider the positive economic impacts of Clean Air and Energy Security. We
are a tourist destination. Very few want to visit an area with
dirty air. We also recognize the invaluable health effects
advantages of cleaner air.
Importantly Arizona has no oil refineries -- and virtually no
oil reserves The basic revenue of every gallon of gasoline,
diesel and jet fuel pumped, flows out of the State, and all too
often out of the country.

➢ Phoenix is now recognized as leader in reducing the use petroleum fuel. That leadership has spread through the Valley , and as far North as
The Grand Canyon National Park who now fuels their tour buses with
natural gas.
Greatest Total Petroleum Reduction
Rank State
➢ Alternative fuels are used in over 3,300 Phoenix fleet vehicles
➢ Sky Harbor is the largest user of natural gas in the US. And, employees

➢ Valley Metro, is the largest user of Liquefied natural gas in the US. And, it is coordinated with the Light Rail System,
operating on electric power. This system also removes thousands of cars from our streets.

Video Collaboration
with ASU’s EcoCar (3)
Program
As an element of their program
for competition, ASU’s EcoCar
program is filming a collaboration
video between their organization
and Valley of the Sun Clean Cities.
We are working together to promote
the need for more energy efficient
vehicles and are delighted to be
featured as a contribution to their
road to success. This is ASU’s first
time competing in the EcoCar (3)
Competition sponsored by Argonne National Labs. The program
consists of a multidisplanary team
competiting over a course of 4 years
to take part in Advanced Vehicle
Technology Competition. Team
membership allows students to earn
credit toward their degrees and gain
hands-on experience engineering,
managing, in an automotive industry setting.
VSCCC Participate in Two Different Earth
Day Events, Grand Canyon and Salt River
Pima-Maricopa Indian (SRP-MIC)
VSCCC celebrated Earth Day both at two
significant locals: SRP-MIC Indian Community and Grand Canyon National Park. Our
booth featured clean fuel literature and experience. We staged a contest to estimate the
amount of petroleum fuel displaced at each
local. The prizes were ultra-light backpacks.
Ford Hybrids were also on display at the Indian Community courtesy of Berge
Ford and a Prius courtesy of Enterprise Rentals.
Enterprise also sponsored a Prius for the drive to Grand Canyon.
“Filling in the Gaps” Idle Reduction and
Telematics Presentation
Presentations were made on April 29th by Brian Roy of Energetics (via
video conferencing) and Aaron Michaels of Teleogis and local fleet
managers. They outlined how this leading edge technology opens new
dimensions in more efficient fleet management while reducing fuel and
emissions reduction. Their presentations are available for download on
the events page online at www.cleanairaz.org.

Bridging the Electrical Gap Between Cities, GoE3 Completes
the EV “All-Electric Highway” from Phoenix to Tucson
Scottsdale based company GoE3, has taken the lead initiative in the struggle for EV
accessible ‘electric highways’ by finally completing an EV charging route from Phoenix,
Arizona to Tucson, Arizona.
On May 18th, Goe3 and CEO Bruce Brimacombe kicked off an event at the State
Capitol in Phoenix marking the importance of electric vehicles and a universal system
that accommodates all electric makes and models. Secretary of State, Michelle Reagan
and Ken Bennet, former secretary of state spoke at the event and concluded in Tucson making a stop at each station along the way.

New Argonne
Intern
Argonne National Labs have
approved sponsoring an
intern for Valley of the Sun
Clean Cities. The intern will
be working to expand our
marketing and social media
platforms by utilizing different social media sites to relay
information and education
about alt-fuel vehicles.
The new EV route from Phoenix to Tucson features universal stations that combine level 2
and level 3 quick charging to extend EV owners range outside their city. Participating stations in the initial route include: Chevron Station, Casa Grande; Picacho Peak Plaza, Picacho
Peak; and AM/PM Tucson, Ariz. “These universal chargers are the first in a nationwide network that we have
planned,” Brimacombe stated: “Universal chargers from
the Pacific to the Atlantic are good for the nation’s economy.”

Chapter In Town Hall Magazine
Valley of the Sun Clean Cities Bill Sheaffer was ask by Dr. Kuby of ASU, a member of
VSCCC, to co-author a section on alternative fuels, their advantages and infrastructure in
Townhall Magazine Transportation and Arizona edition. This section can be found from
the attached link on pages71-74. VSCCC feels privileged to be selected to get the facts and
advantages of alternative fuel in a medium of this stature.

National Biodiesel Board Collaboration Video Featuring Arizona
Valley of the Sun Clean Cities worked closely with the National Biodiesel Board in May to produce a new informational video promoting the use of biodiesel. They filmed the algae labs at
Arizona State University and several of the Valley
of the Sun Fleets using biodiesel. The National
Biodiesel Board selected Arizona for its extensive
use of biodiesel and the video will feature the
greater Phoenix area.
Ford Eco-Boost Challenge at WestWorld
Ford Eco-boost Challenge visited Westworld on May 2nd to feature its new top of the
line vehicles with Eco-boost capabilities. Challenge participants had the opportunity to
drive the all-new 2015 F-150, Mustang, Edge and Transit Connect Wagon against the
competition along with a mustang maneuvering challenge and ST reaction challenge. A
track was setup to help inexperienced drivers who fear the stick shift the ability to learn
how to drive a manual transmission. Ford also features two competitively priced plugin hybrids and an all-electric version of the Transit Direct.
To further their involvement Ford teamed up with Big Surf and the Salvation Army to hold a water bottle drive for the Army’s “Extreme Heat Hydration Program.” The drive went until May 31st and anyone who donates a case of water received
a half-off voucher to Big Surf Waterpark in Tempe. he Salvation Army’s Extreme Heat Hydration Program was launched in
2006 to distribute water and provide respite and safety information to those in need at mobile hydration stations in Metro
Phoenix on days with excessive heat warnings.
