It extends all the way back to 1972 when, in preparation for a visit by the university’s accrediting body, the Vice President of Academic Affairs formed a Facilities Committee. I was asked to chair it. Among our tasks was to determine which academic areas most needed new facilities. We concluded that serious needs existed in both business and the fine arts. Three years later, Dr. John Barker, who had succeeded Dr. Travis White as president of Midwestern, re-convened the committee. The decision to construct a fine arts complex grew out of these meetings. While the business building was in poor condition, Dr. Barker reasoned that the greater need was to establish a College of Fine Arts and build a permanent, modern facility for art, music, and theatre. (The original design called for a separate wing for each of the three disciplines. The music wing, however, was never built.) The limitations under which the art program operated during the years prior to the building of the fine arts complex were notable. McGaha, the primary building in which the program was located, had no art gallery – and no hot water. The metalsmithing studio was located in a converted locker room on the north side of the MSU football stadium where, in 1958, the MSU football team had played the final game of that era. Tom Crossnoe, chairman of the Art Department, and a new printmaking professor named Richard Ash both made use of the space, Crossnoe as a metalsmithing studio and Ash as a storehouse for lithography stones he used in printmaking. I especially remember visiting the studio one afternoon to look over some 700 lithography stones that Ash and Crossnoe had acquired in New Orleans. While I was impressed by Crossnoe’s grit and determination to use whatever space he could find, I also remember feeling a bit ashamed that I could conduct my chemistry research in a well-equipped lab in a newly built science and mathematics building. My art colleague was conducting his work in an old dressing room. Dr. Barker’s decision to build a fine arts complex would right these and other lamentable conditions. R E T R O S P E C T I V E U N I V E R S I T Y A R T G A L L E R Y E X H I B As former chair of the committee that first recommended building a fine arts complex and as current president of Midwestern, I have now the great fortune to be present at the celebration of the thirtieth year that the Department of Art has made its home in the south wing of the Fain Fine Arts building and the thirtieth fall season that the University Gallery, now The Juanita Harvey Gallery, has mounted exhibitions. The combined efforts of a number of persons and groups, inside and outside the university, and a shared appreciation for art have transformed a small, dedicated cadre of faculty working in poorly equipped studios into an endowed school of visual arts – The Juanita & Ralph Harvey School of Visual Arts. What a wonderful development in the life of a public liberal arts university. The support of the Harveys through the MSU Art Endowment and the efforts of their children – Caren Prothro and her family and Ralph and Martha Harvey and their family – and the efforts of other Harvey family members and dear friends who have contributed to the Harvey Endowment build upon the fineness of a studio and gallery program that has flourished over the past thirty years, a considerable number of them under the direction of the department’s long-serving chair and gallery director and Harvey friend, Richard Ash. I should also add that the Harveys’ close tie with the Art Department began in the classroom here when Juanita Harvey started taking painting classes from Elizabeth Yarosz. So what we mark on this occasion is the dedication and support of the wonderful people who stand as a tribute to the power of art to transform lives. As the important collector and patron Dominique de Menil once wrote, “Art is what lifts us above daily life. It makes us more open, more human, more refined, and even more intelligent.” Indeed, it does. Indeed, it has. And, indeed, it will in The Juanita & Ralph Harvey School of Visual Arts of Midwestern State University. JESSE W. ROGERS, President Midwestern State University I T I O N H I S T O R Y M I D W E S T E R N S T A T E U N I V E R S I T Y T H I R T Y Y E A R The initial design for the Fain Fine Arts Center began in 1975. The art wing of the complex was developed by Prof. Thomas C. Crossnoe, department chair; and in January 1978, the faculty moved into their new space. Prior to this time, the program had been housed in McGaha Hall and a number of small facilities on campus. Department exhibitions, which consisted of faculty and graduating senior events, were installed in other campus venues, such as the Clark Student Center and in locations around Wichita Falls, including the Woman’s Forum, North Texas Federal Savings and Loan, and the Wichita Falls Museum and Art Center. In its new facility, the department would concentrate its efforts to establish a teaching gallery whose exhibitions program would expose MSU students to contemporary art from the Southwestern United States. Artists in midcareer and those teaching in other university art programs – artists who were approachable and willing to share their knowledge with students and people from the community – would be invited to campus. Consideration of the city’s arts community was also important. The gallery program would augment other exhibition venues in the city and fit comfortably with them. Cost overruns on the construction of the fine arts complex affected the University Art Gallery, which was not yet complete in January 1978 after the university had accepted the facility and assumed occupancy. The task of finishing the gallery fell to art faculty and student volunteers who spent the spring installing fabric on display walls and painting and cleaning the area. Timothy McDowell, Joe Barrington, Kevin Marshall, and Anthony Huff, each of whom has established a successful career in the larger art world, were among the student volunteers. Through these combined efforts, the University Art Gallery opened on September 15th, 1978, with an MSU Faculty Exhibition. Those featured in the exhibition were Tom Crossnoe, Richard Ash, Larry Davis, Raymond Stefanelli, and Don Harter. During the gallery’s inaugural season, James Woodson and David Conn from Fort Worth, John Fincher from Santa Fe, Jim Romberg from Arizona, Gisela-Heidi Strunck from Dallas, and Daniel Smith from Seattle exhibited their works in the gallery. Some of these artists are included in this 30th Anniversary Exhibition. R E T R O S P E C T I V E U N I V E R S I T Y While the department had begun developing a Visiting Artists Program in 1970, the A R T G A L L E R Y E X H I B I T I O N H I S T O R Y The University Gallery and the Visiting Artists Program were strengthened in the 1980s and opening of the University Gallery expanded the role and the scope of the entire studio art early 1990s with additional grants from various sources: the Target Store in Wichita Falls (1989-92), program. Full-scale exhibitions and opening receptions could be hosted, and residencies for the City of Wichita Falls (two decades), the Wichita Falls Art Commission, NCNB Texas National Bank artists could be scheduled. During their residences, visiting artists presented lectures, gave (1992-93), and Midwestern State University’s President’s Excellence Circle. During the fall of 1992, demonstrations, and created artwork in all of the program’s studio disciplines. MSU President Louis J. Rodriguez announced that Mrs. Minnie Rhea Wood and the Fain Foundation had established a $2 million endowment for the university’s fine arts programs. The building would become Although the new facility offered new opportunities for students’ artistic development, the department’s administration was in a constant search for capital funds. One known as the Fain Fine Arts Center. The Fain Endowment assured the art program a stable operating innovation during the 1970s was to underwrite the costs of printmaking workshops through the budget. For the first time, the department could schedule future Visiting Artists / Gallery Programs sale of subscriptions that would entitle subscribers to a print created during the workshop. These beyond the current academic year. patrons became the program’s core supporters. Many of them later were among the original group to contribute to the MSU Art Endowment, established in 1981-82, under the leadership of secured. The geographical range represented by visiting artists expanded, and the number of artists Dr. Tom Haywood, Jerry Estes, Calvin Hansen, and Prof. Crossnoe. The group’s goal was to raise invited to campus increased. Field trips for students to visit artists’ studios, commercial galleries, $25,000; they exceeded the mark by $5,000. and museums in Dallas, Fort Forth, and Oklahoma City were also organized. Visitors to the gallery, Contributors to the original MSU Art Endowment include the following: After 1990, exhibitions became more ambitious; and the reputation of the program was including visiting artists, often commented on the quality of the gallery’s exhibition announcements. Such observations and other positive responses from guest artists whose works had been exhibited at Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Harvey Jr. J.I. Staley Dr. and Mrs. Charles R. When MSU students visited other Dr. and Mrs. Ed Crump Dr. and Mrs. James Lee Mr. and Mrs. Robert Priddy art venues, they discovered that their own university’s program and gallery were held in high regard. The recently renovated gallery functions as an important instructional space for students and as the major visual arts community outreach for the Fain College of Fine Arts. For 30 years the gallery’s numerous exhibitions, artists’ lectures, and gallery talks have advanced the importance of the visual arts to students, the university community, and beyond. The Juanita and Ralph Harvey School of Visual Arts is most grateful especially to the Harvey family for their continued and vital commitment to our program, as well as others in the community who through their contributions have nourished the growth of culture in our region. Sincere appreciation is extended to Jesse Rogers, President of Midwestern State University, under whose leadership and patronage the art program has thrived. We are indebted to Howard Farrell, Vice-President of University Advancement and Student Affairs, and Anne Opperman, Director of Donor Services and Special Projects for their considerable efforts on our behalf. Recognition goes to Ronald Fischli, Dean of the Fain College of Fine Arts who has been unfailingly supportive of all creative endeavors. My thanks also to Gallery Director Catherine Prose and Professor Richard Ash for their spirited teamwork in selecting this group of artists, to Catherine Prose for producing the catalog, and to Catherine, assisted by Kit Reisch, Exhibition Preparator, for successfully hanging this group of artworks in a compelling and cogent manner. Finally, it is the profound dedication of the 29 artists included in this exhibition that testifies to the vitality and depth of art in the southwest. We deeply thank each of them for their contributions and participation in this special exhibition. Nancy Steele-Hamme, Chair The Juanita and Ralph Harvey School of Visual Arts I T I O N H I S T O R Y M I D W E S T E R N S T A T E U N I V E R S I T Y 2 0 · · · · If we are to believe the Americans for the Arts ad campaign that “the less art kids get the more it shows,” we would easily believe after reading through this document that Midwestern State University, the City of Wichita Falls, and surrounding areas have a thirty year history of demanding more. The exhibition Thirty Year Selected Retrospective: University Art Gallery 1978-2008 serves as a selected sampling of the talented artists we have had the honor of representing in the past thirty years. We thank these individual artists for allowing us to share in their success. A warm thank you must go to Richard Martin Ash, co-curator of the exhibition, for the giving of his time and memories toward this collection of artists’ work and exhibition history. Through generous funding from the President’s Excellence Circle, the gallery has been able to produce this accompanying catalogue recording each exhibition and visiting artist hosted by the newly named Juanita Harvey Art Gallery in the Fain Fine Arts Center at Midwestern State University since 1978. After the exhibition has concluded and the work is returned to the artists, this accompanying catalogue and exhibition history will continue to complement Midwestern State University, the City of Wichita Falls, and surrounding areas’ demand for more creative thinking. I must give my heart felt gratitude to Nancy Steele-Hamme, Chair, for her leadership and support of this project. Thanks to Kit Reisch, exhibition preparatory and technical assistant, for his swift and professional help throughout this project. To Jesika Fisher, School of Art secretary, and Stephanie Gorham, secretary to the Dean of Fine Arts, for their creativity and organization. Lastly a thank you to my student assistant Kelley Hughes who is willing to take on any task I give her and do it well.
