Much learning is repetition. Anyone who has
taught anything is familiar
with plaintive expressions
of ―I already know this!‖ or
―But we did this last year!‖
We patiently explain that
there is little harm in doing
things over, but even we
are sometimes weary of
reworking
well-known
problems. ―Rote‖ learning
is held in the lowest esteem, as an unfortunate
necessity to fill the gaps between the learning
which we hold to be higher and better.
Our tradition does not have our modern bias
against repetition – in the Jewish approach to

learning, saying the same words
over and over is the way learning is
done. In our best known paragraph
we are urged to ―repeat these
words to your children‖ – and there
is nothing more rote than our twice
daily repetition of the Shema. We
recite it over and over and over
again so the words become part of
us – unmediated by the so-called
higher faculties.
pieces of Torah will become part of us
and live in us, but as long as our eyes
are open to her vastness we know
that we never cease to see new
things – though our approach is rote.
It is a Tree of Life for all who grasp
her – we live our lives and the life of
all Israel in the repetition of her
words.

With the recent celebration of Simchat Torah we are acutely aware of
our tradition’s disposition for going
back to the beginning and starting
over. Indeed, we do not even wait a
day from our completion of Deuteronomy to our re-initiation of the
reading of Genesis. And even
though there are rote aspects to
this approach to learning (ask any
Torah reader), we know that the
sea of Torah is broader than we will
ever appreciate, and that we could
read it carefully for one hundred
and twenty years and only begin to
scratch the surface. With work,

Rabbi Alan Brill, Ph. D.
Rabbi Brill is the Cooperman/Ross Endowed Chair for Jewish-Christian Studies in
honor of Sister Rose Thering at Seton Hall University, where he teaches Jewish
Studies in the Graduate Department of Jewish-Christian Studies. He is an expert
on contemporary Jewish thought, and active in interfaith encounters. He is the author of Thinking God: The Mysticism of Rabbi Zadok of Lubllin, and Judaism and
Other Religions.
This Jewish learning enrichment weekend is supported by a grant from the
Ira A. Roschelle, MD Family Foundation. Temple Israel presents this weekend’s events in memory of our late member, Ira A. Roschelle.

Book Club
Our next selection is Mennonite in a Little Black Dress: A Memoir of Going Home,
by Rhoda Janzen. It is a hilarious moving memoir about a woman who returns home to
her close-knit Mennonite family after a personal crisis. We will meet at 7:30 PM on
Wednesday, October 13, at Florence Abrams’ house
For our December 14th meeting we have chosen When a Crocodile Eats the Sun: A
Memoir of Africa, by Peter Godwin. It is an account of the author’s family history and
his parents’ lives in an increasingly desperate Zimbabwe.

example, Elaine Schackman Kimple
was at Shep’s original Bar Mitzvah,
and Woody Goldstein celebrated his
Bar Mitzvah that same year, 1950.
Temple Israel Celebrates The
Sixtieth Anniversary Of Shep
Scheinberg’s Bar Mitzvah
On
Saturday
morning, August 21, 2010,
at Temple Israel of Riverhead,
Shep
Scheinberg was
called to the
Torah on the
60th anniversary of his Bar Mitzvah. It was on the
same Bimah, before the same Aron Kodesh, in the same synagogue, where his
original Bar Mitzvah took place.
Shep’s speech was a history of Jewish
Riverhead as he remembers it from
his childhood. He described the thenflourishing Main Street, mentioning
the various businesses, which were
primarily owned by (enterprising)
Jews. Temple Israel of Riverhead was
thriving in those days, as the center of
Jewish social life as well as worship.
For many in attendance, it was a trip
down ―memory lane;‖ and for others,
a fascinating history lesson.
The idea for this event was inspired by
the inimitable Jaime Siegel. Once
Jaime had coaxed Shep into his Bar
Mitzvah redux as a fundraiser for our
temple, Shep embarked on months of
study; first with Rabbi Chezi Zionce of
Beth Tikvah in Naples, Florida, and
later with Rabbi Siemers. I awoke
many a morning to the sound of his
chanting of his Maftir portion, his
Haftorah, and the attendant blessings.
Shep was diligent, and his many
months of practice paid off, as we witnessed when he ably chanted the Maftir
Alyiah of Ki Tetze and his Haftarah
from Isaiah.
Shep and I felt embraced by the many
friends who made the effort to be
there, mostly Jewish, but many of
other faiths, as well as the members
of our Temple Israel family. I think
the spirit and joy of the day was
summed up for me when a dear friend
said, ―This is the first time I’ve had
the pleasure of congratulating the
wife of the Bar Mitzvah!‖

Local Politicians Speak at
Selichot
Welcome to Our
New Members
On September 4, 2010, the spiritual
service of Selichot was preceded by
talks from our guests, two elected officials: U.S. Congressman Tim Bishop,
a four-term member from the 1st District of New York, and Brookhaven
Town Supervisor Mark Lesko. Rabbi
Siemers introduced each local representative.

Supervisor Lesko spoke about his goal
of increasing economic development
by encouraging new high-technology
companies to start businesses in Suffolk County. He also spoke about attempts to deal with the blight of abandoned properties. He answered some
lively questions from the congregation.
Congressman Bishop expressed his
hope that the upcoming political campaign would deal with the discussion
of issues, and that candidates would
treat each other civilly rather than with
nasty name-calling. He assured us that
all political parties are united in their
support for Israel. He also responded
to questions and comments.
The congregation retired to the social
hall for more discussion and scrumptious desserts before the poignant Selichot service led by Rabbi Siemers. All
in all, it was a moving and instructive
evening.

Men’s Club at TIR
We are looking for members to reinstitute the TIR Men's Club, to meet on a Thursday
night, every other month, at the temple.
Plans include dinner, cards, and socializing, and we're open to additional suggestions.

Your Help is Needed with Food Preparation
The board would like to form a committee to organize volunteers to prepare food for
our Friday night Onegs and Saturday morning Kiddushes. This preparation occurs on
Thursday afternoon and/or Friday afternoon before sundown, and requires between an
hour and 90 minutes. Volunteers will receive orientation and training on what needs to
be done.

Rabbi’s Barbecue a Success
The Second Annual Rabbi's Gourmet Barbecue and cocktail party on August
22 provided a spectacular culmination to Alumni Weekend. There were 46 guests enjoying the live band, amazing food, and great wine at Jaime Siegel's spacious home.
Jamie himself manned the grill with his usual verve and delicious results. A slight
drizzle didn't dampen the gathering at all, since the room and sheltered porch were so
large. An unexpected highlight was a visit from Randy Altschuler, a businessman,
former Fulbright Scholar, and graduate of Princeton University and Harvard Business
School, currently running for Congress.
The wine flowed freely and a good time was had by all. Thanks to Jaime and those
who helped him set up: Richard Israel, Ike Israel, and Lorraine Richter.

Leaves on the Tree of Life
An engraved leaf on the lovely Tree of
Life which graces our Social Hall is a
joyous reminder of a Bat or Bar Mitzvah, an anniversary, a wedding, or a
special birthday, and also a fitting tribute to the memory of a loved one. The
cost of a leaf is $180. For further information, please contact Phyllis

Kosher Food For Our Events
Beach Bakery in Westhampton Beach is a kosher, dairy bakery all
year, except during the summer when pareve items are offered, also.
Bagel Patch, in Patchogue, frequently provides the food for our special events. The Best Yet Market on Route 58 carries pareve cookies
and cakes. BJ’s and Costco also have pareve cookies in their bakeries, and the Riverhead Waldbaum’s bakery is kosher.
