Annual Report FY2014 - American Swedish Historical Museum
ANNUAL REPORT for FY2014 July 1, 2013 - June 30, 2014 1900 Pattison Ave. Philadelphia, PA 19145 215.389.1776 www.americanswedish.org americanswedish The Ripple Effect A single change can have a large ripple effect. The museum has had a its share of changes over the past year which have had far-reaching results. In September, we officially contracted with Jeffrey Miller Catering (JAM) as our new preferred caterer, . This new relationship allows us to build a sustainable revenue source, while at the same time bringing thousands of people to the museum for the first time. We developed a list of improvements to our facility that would benefit both the museum and JAM’s events. Over the winter and summer, a talented team of professionals helped us transform the Assembly Room, Restrooms, and Terrace Areas. We also purchased a state-of-the-art tent, which allows us to do outdoor events rain or shine! None of these renovations would have been possible without the generous support of the Davenport Foundation, an anonymous individual gift, and financing from Jeffrey Miller Catering. At the same time that all of these exciting improvements were being planned, we moved forward with the replacement of our stormwater management system. The constant flooding of the basement over the past few years made it an urgent priority, and Board Chairman Leonard Busby, JAM staff we went through the process of selecting architects and getting city member Mandy Lightcap, Executive Director approvals for our plans. We seized the moment and combined this Tracey Beck and Jeffrey Miller at the contract construction with the Terrace renovations into one major construction signing in September 2013. project, which took place this summer. Thanks to a generous challenge grant from an individual, we were able to raise $67,000 towards the project in a very short amount of time. The ASHM Board made the decision to fund the balance out of the museum’s long-term investments. The results of the renovations are both stunning and an enormous relief. Our basement has been dry since the completion of the project, and when our members see the newly renovated spaces we hear exclamations of delight! The completed front terrace renovations in summer 2014. Other changes have had a large impact, as well. Birgitta Davis retired at the end of 2013 after 26 years of dedicated service to the American Swedish Historical Museum. Her influence and touch could be felt throughout the museum’s education programs, events, and gift shop. Since another staff position had opened up around the same time, we decided to re-structure the job duties of most staff members. We hope that the new structure of our staff positions will help us attract and retain qualified professionals, recruit and use volunteers more effectively, and formalize our use of interns from Sweden. Change is usually not easy, but the ripples it creates can have a beautiful effect. Sincerely, 1 Report FY2014 Tracey Rae Beck Executive Director Education Programs for Children and Adults At the beginning of December, Lauren Burnham joined the American Swedish Historical Museum as the Education and Public Programs Manager. She has dedicated to getting to know the educational needs of Philadelphia and surrounding areas and is focused on upholding ASHM’s tradition of providing outstanding educational programing to schools, libraries, and community groups. Over the last fiscal year ASHM was able to serve over 70 organizations and 2,500 students. The ability to reach many of these children is due in large part to the financial scholarship support from the Connelly Foundation’s Access Program and the Philadelphia Foundation. Toddler Time continued to grow in popularity, reaching record attendance for a single session with 60 people in May. The program serves the museum’s youngest visitors and has generated new memberships. Throughout the course of the last fiscal year, Toddler Time had 315 attendees. The Swedish cultural program topics covering literature, art, and science, and has brought new families to the organization who look forward to attending museum programs for years to come. ASHM has also been spending time outside of the building working directly in the community. In exchange for IKEA’s generous support of the Do You Know Pippi Longstocking? exhibition, ASHM set up craft activity tables in the Philadelphia and Conshohocken stores in April. The in-store opportunity was a great way for families to get an introduction to the museum and learn about the new exhibit. The museum also reached out to the community by attending Colonist Day in Wilmington and the Tinnicum Township Community Day this spring. In addition to education programs the museum has experienced a very successful year of public programing. Highlights include the Powwow event organized by the Auxiliary in September which was attended by 400 people! In March, the museum was proud to open the new exhibit Do You Know Pippi Longstocking? in combination with our annual Waffle Day, which had an outstanding attendance of 279 people. ASHM also hosted a sold out bus trip to New York City to see the work of Swedish artist Anders Zorn at the National Academy Museum, along with lunch at the Swedish Church of New York and shopping stops at the Swedish candy store Sockerbit and clothing store Gudrun Sjöden. A new event for the museum, which was met with overwhelming popularity, was Swedish National Day in June. We partnered with the Kalmar Nyckel Foundation and offered free admission, craft activities, face painting, guided tours, and of course Swedish strawberry cake. National Day was attended by more than 150 people! Board member Sam Heed helped kids make a Kalmar Nyckel ship model at National Day. Kids made Dala horse crafts at IKEA with the ASHM’s education staff. Report FY2014 2 Volunteers Enough can’t be said about the importance of volunteers at the American Swedish Historical Museum. From special events to daily operations, the museum wouldn’t be able to fulfill its mission to serve the cultural needs of the community if it wasn’t for the tireless efforts of volunteers. In 2013, Tina Cook and Elisabeth Brown were presented the Amandus Johnson Volunteer Service award for their dedication to the organization. The museum is also working with the next generation of volunteers by partnering with the Murrell Dobbins Vocational High School’s Culinary Arts Program to assist with Swedish food programs. This past March, Dobbins students helped with Waffle Day by making waffle batter from a traditional Swedish recipe, cooking, and serving over 300 waffles to hungry museum patrons. Working with Dobbins is a true partnership of education because the students experience real world food preparation while learning the culinary traditions of another culture. The museum and staff sincerely thank both individuals and groups who are committed to helping the organization succeed! New Sweden History Conference 2013 Elisabeth Brown and Tina Cook received the 2013 Amandus Johnson Volunteer Service Award. Students from Murrel Dobbins High School whipped up hundreds of waffle in our kitchen for Waffe Day. In recognition of the 375th anniversary of the New Sweden Colony, a consortium of American and Swedish organizations co-sponsored an international conference, “Encountering ‘Others’ in the Atlantic World: Perspectives from the Material World,” held November 8-10, 2013. The conference team took advantage of new technologies to meet simultaneously at the University of Delaware and Lund University in Sweden, connected via live videoconferencing. Selected presentations were recorded and are available on a conference website. The conference served as both the Thirteenth Annual New Sweden History Conference and the Annual Meeting of the Council for Northeast Historical Archaeology. The conference served as an international forum on comparative colonialism, took a fresh look at New Sweden in historical and comparative context using the lens of archaeology and material culture studies to focus on daily lives of the 17th-century Finns and Swedes at home and in the colonies, and their early 18th-century descendants living in the Delaware Valley. Scholars in the US and Sweden presented 43 papers on SwedenNew Sweden topics to a combined audience of 345 people. 3 Report FY2014 Exhibition Highlights Special Exhibitions The Enduring Designs of Josef Frank (September 22, 2013-February 23, 2014) Visitors came from all over the region to see this vibrant travelling exhibition from Svenskt Tenn. We are delighted that Svenskt Tenn generously donated all of the linen textiles featured in the exhibition for our newly renovated Assembly Room! It is an honor to include Josef Frank’s designs, Svenskt Tenn’s craftsmanship, and Estrid Ericson’s (founder of Svenskt Tenn) legacy in our museum. Do you Know Pippi Longstocking? (March 23, 2014-February 16, 2015) This is a fun and interactive ASHM original focusing on the famous redheaded girl and her creator, Astrid Lindgren. University of the Arts MEPD graduate student, Xander Karkruff, toiled well beyond regular hours working with Carrie to design the exhibition. The fabrication firm, In-Depth Inc., constructed the exhibition, and Signs of Art printed the graphics. The exhibition continues to draw families and new visitors to ASHM. Featured Mini Exhibitions Snapshot (May 2013-December 2013) In honor of ASHM’s 75th anniversary of our 1938 dedication, the museum exhibited a special selection of photos from our historic photos collection. Spanning from 1927-1975, the Snapshot exhibition highlighted the museum’s architecture and interiors. Digital Pippi (March 23, 2014-February 16, 2015) Dutch artist Jessie Titley’s Pippi Longstocking digital work a featured extension of the Do You Know Pippi Longstocking? exhibition. Her work is installed in the Kalm-Seaborg gallery along side Astrid Lindgren’s biographical case. Fact & Fiction: Getting to Know Sweden’s Authors Kalm-Seaborg Gallery, March 11, 2011—Ongoing Birger Sandzén: Collection Highlights Balcony Level, May 6, 2011—Ongoing Artist Jessie Titley poses with her work. Conservation and Collections In late summer 2013, chronic flooding in the basement resulted in the damage of two 1930s, hand-woven rugs originally designed and installed in the John Ericsson and Chicago Rooms, respectively. We had the water and mold vacuumed by a professional conservator. Fortunately, after an extensive cycle of drying and cleaning, a textile specialist evaluated the historical rugs and determined that they are stable and the damage is not permanent. The Golden Map Room has a new glow thanks to Margaretha Talerman, who donated the funds to have new, LED lights installed. The new lighting is highly efficient and produces almost no heat, which is invaluable to the long-term preservation of the Golden Map. Report FY2014 4 Marketing and Membership The museum had a great year when it came to reaching new audiences, gaining new members and taking advantage of new marketing opportunities. One of the most exciting of those opportunities was the chance for the museum, along with Senior Curator, Carrie Hogan, to be included in the documentary series “Philadelphia: The Great Experiment.” Carrie was interviewed and made the cut for several segments of the series focusing on the pre-Penn years of the Delaware Valley and the Swedish settlement. The series film crew also spent a day taking interior shots of the museum’s galleries, which were also featured in the same episodes. Another great opportunity for promotion was an increased marketing budget for the Do You Know Pippi Longstocking? exhibition. With almost double the amount of the general marketing budget to spend, we were able to book multiple ad packages that ran online and in print, as well as run a two week sponsorship spot of WHYY TV during “Sesame Street.” We ran ads with Visit Philly (formerly GPTMC), the Metro, Philadelphia Weekly, the City Paper, Montgomery News, and Nordstjernan. In addition, we made deals with several family entertainment sites, as well as mommy bloggers, who ran online ads, wrote reviews and editorial of the exhibition, as well as promoted it through social media channels. The broad appeal of the exhibition helped the story get picked up by Where Magazine, Swedish Press, The Philadelphia Inquirer, Uwishunu.com, and WHYY’s Newsworks, to name just a few. The museum staff and several devoted members decided to all pitch in and give the museum a chance for some fun, free exposure by volunteering as a group one early April morning and answering pledge calls at WHYY. We worked from 6am to 10am, and for that block of time the radio hosts regularly made mention of the museum as their “Pledge Central” volunteers. It was great fun and, based on feedback from our members, reached a lot of people! Membership has also been moving along quite well this year. Building off of the success of our “Swedish Bucks” gift shop coupon promotion, the Membership Committee opted to create a “Pippi’s Gold” coupon to offer to new members who joined between the opening of our Pippi exhibit and the end of 2014. This has also proven to be effective, particularly with the many Household memberships we are selling, as more and more families visit the museum for Toddler Time, as well as Pippi. 5 Report FY2014 126 The museum’s new member sales increased by 35% this year, from 82 to 126.
