Customized Programming
The Public and School Programs Department will work with
your class, Scout group, youth serving agency, or other nonformal education group to personalize our programs to meet
your needs. Whether you need long term programming for your
school, programming to meet specific badge requirements
or something that helps you address a grant-related goal,
let us help you meet the challenge. Our programs combine
hands-on, inquiry-based learning with an appropriate amount
of fun and exploration. Call us at 314.289.4439 to discuss
your needs. Programs can be scheduled anytime, including
weekends, evenings, overnights and holidays.
General Science
All programs can be facilitated on-site or at your location
unless otherwise noted by the following symbol which
indicates on-site only: 
Amazing Science Demonstrations
Let us put on a live science demonstration just for your group.
Shows are 30 minutes. These fun and exciting demonstrations
are perfect for field trips, school assemblies, banquet
entertainment, corporate functions, and more! Choose from
the topics below.
Multiple demos may be booked with a minimum 15 minutes
between demos. Demonstrator requires: 1) Access to running
water, 2) A grounded outlet near demonstration site. 3) A
table at least 6 feet long. 4) 15 feet space between presenter
and audience required.
*Note: some experiments in these demonstrations are not safe
for those who have pacemakers or hearing aids.
*H2Whoa! – Water plays an important role in our lives, but
chemically speaking, water is a rebel. From seeming to defy
gravity to sparking excitement, we’ll investigate the uncommon
properties of the world’s most common chemical. Note: This
show presents experiments that contain open flames. Also, will
include a loud pop noise.
*A Hair Raising Experience – This shocking demonstration
will electrify learning. We’ll explore the parts of an atom, learn
why doorknobs shock us in the wintertime and create an arc of
electricity that will energize a light bulb without using wires.
**It’s a Blast! – This is the show you’ve always asked for!
A chemistry show that explores a very specific type of
exothermic reaction – Fire! Through surprising experiments
discover the basic needs of fire and witness some loud, bright
and colorful demonstrations that are sure to spark excitement.
($20 chemical supply fee applies)
Note: This show presents experiments that contain open
flames. Show must be done indoors, in a room with 12 foot or
higher ceilings.
Motion Magic – Newton’s Laws of Motion are so commonsense that we know their results instinctively...most of the
time. Sometimes, though, the same laws can produce quite
surprising results! Can a bike stay up without a rider? Do you
have to be a magician to pull a table cloth out from a dinner
plate? In this demonstration, we’ll learn the science behind
how things move, and find out how magical physics can be!
Now Hear This! – Most people know what sound is, but how
does sound work? We’ll get things shaking to explore sound
energy and find out some unusual ways we can make noise.
We’ll learn about frequency, waves and pitch through fun
demonstrations. You’ll hear singing goblets, screaming metal
rods and figure out a way to see sound.
**These programs are more suited for assembly sized
demonstrations
PER DEMO:
Program length: 30 minutes
Maximum: 100 in a group per session
Grade level: K – 12
Cost: $75 on-site, $125 off-site (Prices may vary depending
on size of your group)
**Boiling Hot, Boiling Cold  – Examine the dramatic
differences and striking similarities between two boiling
liquids: water and liquid nitrogen.
**Energy Out of Control  – See the science of weather in
action as we create a thunderstorm on stage! Learn all about
clouds, lightning, and tornadoes.
**Creepy Chemistry – This series of spooky experiments
will definitely get ooohs and ahhs. We’ll explore a variety of
chemistry experiments including fun with fire, expanding
lunch bags and rapid decomposition. We’ll end it all with a
bang! ($20 chemical supply fee applies) Note: demonstration
includes an explosion, which can be startling and loud.

“I Can Dig It” is an exciting program in which students will
form crews of paleontologists and archeologists to uncover
the past. The goal of the program is for participants to
understand the processes that scientists use in archeology
and paleontology and to understand the similarities and
differences between the two disciplines. We’ll explore
dinosaurs, ancient civilizations, and everything in between
using the tools and techniques used by real scientists. Who
knows what fun you’ll unearth once you dig in!

Planetarium 
The Planetarium Show
All shows will be conducted in the Orthwein StarBay and will
include self-guided tour of the Boeing Space Station that will
help us learn about living and working in space!
The Little Star That Could
The story of an “average” star who travels the universe in
search of planets. Along the way he makes many discoveries
about stars, planets, galaxies and himself. This show is
recommended for early childhood age, and is a great show for
early childhood groups.
Grade level: K – 2
Note: This program is also available for visitors who are blind
or visually impaired.
Live Sky: The Constellations
Constellations are what we use to organize the sky, they help
us locate the objects of interest to astronomy and they provide
us a way to travel back in time to explore the ancient people
who named them. For ancient astronomers the constellations
were not only the products of scientific pursuits but often
times also served as a means to understand their world and
their very existence. Cultures around the world developed
rich traditions seeped in astronomy that included their own
interpretation of the constellations. Join us for this live
presentation as we explore all about the constellations in our
night skies.
Paleontology Program
Inquiry into Paleontology: Preserving the Past
Preserving the Past is a program which explores the scientific
method via paleontology. Fossils are the remains of past life
and preserve evidence of now extinct living things that once
lived long ago. Examine real Fossils and living animals while
making observations and measurements, form a hypothesis,
collect data, and logically test theory.
Program length: 1.5 hours Maximum: 25
Grade level: 5 – 12
Cost: $250 on-site

Live Sky: Southern Stars
The continual parade of stars through the seasons is familiar
to most of us in the Northern hemisphere as the Summer
Triangle gives way to the winter constellations of Taurus and
Orion. Yet these changes are minor compared to what is seen
when traveling further north or south. “Live Sky: Southern
Stars” takes you on a quick trip to see the stars as they
appear at the North Pole, and then heads south of the Equator
to see constellations that never appear in Saint Louis skies.
Grade level: 6 – 12
Live Sky Tonight
Come visit the James S. McDonnell Planetarium for this
all live show featuring out Carl Zeiss Mark IX Planetarium
projector showing a brilliant simulated night on our 80 foot
dome. In this show we will feature what is currently visible in
the night sky including constellations, planets, current Moon
phase and any other special astronomical events such as
meteor showers or comets, etc. We will also feature current
space exploration such as the rovers on Mars.
This show is recommended for all age groups and can be
tailored to fit a particular age group.
