The Knight is young in Florida WELCOME TO THE PRIESTHOOD LYNN RAMSEY of the Florida Catholic staff ORLANDO — Joseph Coicou helped revive a Knights of Columbus council. He serves as his council’s program director. He’s the deputy grand Knight. He’s 25. Coicou, Martin Dunne and others are breathing new life into a Catholic institution that, like other institutions in Florida, seemed to be the realm of retirees. They bring proof that there is room for young blood in the Knights of Columbus. Peter Bishop, the Knights’ state membership coordinator, said the Florida Knights are expecting to add 3,200 to their membership of nearly 49,000 this year, at least 400 of them through a special membership drive this month. Bishop credits the newcomers for helping the state council earn a spot in the Knights’ national Circle of Honor for 16 consecutive years. Ages of newcomers “run anywhere from 18 on up,” Bishop said. “We have a lot of new members. The average age of the order is 52, but in Florida the average age is 42, even with the pensioners.” Bishop said most of the membership comes from councils affiliated with parishes. Others, such as Coicou’s council in the Palm Beach Diocese, take in multiple parishes. Florida also has four college councils and is looking to add more. Service to the Church attracts new members the most. “I’m finding more people wanting to make a difference with their lives, not just going day to day,” said Dunne, a 29-year-old past grand Knight of Council 4955 in Deerfield Beach. “They have a combination of obligations to their families, their jobs, PHOTOS BY VALETA ORLANDO | FC Above, Bishop Thomas Wenski, left, lovingly welcomes Father Vilaire Philius into the brotherhood of priests at his ordination ceremony May 30 at the Cathedral of St. James in Orlando. “My friends, today we give God thanks for having called Vilaire to the priesthood; and we thank Vilaire for freely accepting this call — and all that it entails — with great generosity and love,” said Bishop Wenski in his homily. At right, newly ordained Father Philius, right, is vested in a chasuble for the first time with the assistance of Salesians of John Bosco Fathers Lucien Pierre, left, and Quesnel Delvard. In his homily Bishop Wenski said, “And in welcoming this new brother into our priestly fraternity, we — your bishop and your priests — grow in an even greater appreciation of all that God has done through us — despite our admitted shortcomings. Inspired by the generosity of Vilaire, we also renew our commitment to our vocation to follow Christ, the source of our hope, the hope that does not disappoint” (cf., Rom 5:5). It wasn’t the brazen face of lawlessness getting bolder after the war in Iraq made Baghdad a magnet for crime. No, what made 34-year-old Muthar Hashim Al Dabagh flee his native land was a letter that came after his 28-day stint as a prisoner of the kidnapper was resolved with a huge ransom. The letter, accompanied by a bullet in the en- June 5-18, 2009 Originally from Iraq, the Al Dabagh family — father Muthar Al Dabagh, mother Ban Al Samrie, and children Nawaf, 6, left, and Fahid, 4, center — are settled in Orlando thanks in part to efforts by the Refugee Resettlement Office of Catholic Charities of Central Florida Inc. velope, instructed him to leave Baghdad within a week or he, his wife and two children would be killed. The family gathered important papers and some clothes but left everything else behind, including a successful business selling parts for air conditioners and heating systems. They fled to Jordan in 2006 before applying to come to the United States as refugees. They now live in Orlando — thanks in part to efforts by the Refugee Resettlement Office with Catholic Charities of Central Florida Inc. They arrived here in January. On Saturday, June 20, the family will celebrate World Refugee Day free from the fear of violence, kidnappings and war that caused them to leave their homeland. “I was afraid for my children,” said Al Dabagh. She’s living proof of that. A former marketing and advertising professional turned pilot 20 years ago, the 50-year-old commercial airline pilot now inspires the next generation of fliers not only to dream big dreams, but also to pursue them without prejudice, fear or limitations. Ryan’s message is reaching a group of fifth-graders at Divine Mercy Catholic School, where for about six weeks in early spring they stepped outside the boundaries of a routine science classroom and into a virtual world of geography, physics, math, writing and other core subjects, all based on aviationrelated activities. It was all part of Southwest Airlines “Adopt-A-Pilot” program and Southwest first officer Ryan’s commitment to inspiring young people to be all they can be. “It’s an absolutely wonderful program that gets kids excited not just about aviation, but we try to encourage them to study and stay in school,” Ryan said. “We really emphasize goal-setting and staying in school.” For the students, it was a way to turn a routine school curriculum into something fun. “They loved it; they absolutely loved it,” said fifthgrade teacher Meredith Thiebes of her students. “We start in fifth grade talking about careers and try to get them thinking about what they might want to do. It’s exciting because they are so involved in it. They never got bored.” From Day 1, Ryan had the stu- COURTESY PHOTO Flight instructor Thomas Newman, left, guides fifth-graders from Divine Mercy Catholic School in Merritt Island through a preflight inspection of a Cessna 152, a two-seat basic trainer airplane. Ryan sent postcards from layover cities and kept in contact with the students via e-mail. In their classroom the students kept a pin map of all the cities where Ryan flew. The lessons were hitting home. “I was really impressed with what they remembered,” Thiebes added. “Things like what makes a plane take off. There’s a lot of science involved, a lot of academics, and now ORL A2 a few of our kids want to be pilots.” On the last day of the program Ryan surprised the class of 21 students with a field trip to Merritt Island’s Voyager Aviation where chief flight instructor Patti Vest, along with other flight instructors, let the students have a little hands-on learning. The students experienced a preflight checklist on the flight line, climbed aboard four different types of airplanes from a small single-engine trainer up to a twinengine aircraft, practiced on a flight simulator and participated in demonstrations involving weight and balance. “It lit the fire,” Ryan said of the field trip. “I enjoy inspiring the children to dream about what they can do and letting them know they can do anything they set their minds to.” Southwest Airlines created the Adopt-A-Pilot program in 1997. It originally started as a small community-outreach program in just 50 classrooms in Southwest’s destination cities. It has grown to more than 800 classrooms in large and small communities nationwide. The program was developed in cooperation with the U.S. Department of Education and the Smithsonian Institution’s National Air and Space Museum. National leaders such as Gen. Colin Powell, former President Bill Clinton and former first lady Laura Bush have recognized the excellence of the AdoptA-Pilot program. Ryan brought the program to Divine Mercy Catholic School three years ago. “The program was just really great for the classroom,” Thiebes said. “The students learn so much more when they have fun.” For Ryan, it’s about leading by example and encouraging the students with guidance and firsthand knowledge. Each day she prays, “Dear Lord, help me to do my best today to serve my company, my passengers and my fellow crewmembers, but most importantly, to serve you.” n June 5-18, 2009 Your orlando communitY www.thefloridacatholic.org St. Charles eighth-grader honored as ‘Shining Star’ Fifth-grader earns ‘Dreamer and Doer’ award for work STAFF REPORT DiAnA SmiTh Special to the Florida Catholic ORLANDO — Stepping out of a Disney bus, a costumed Mickey Mouse held a bouquet of balloons, surprising eighth-grader Natalia Rivera in her classroom at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic School in Orlando. It is important for the children to go to school, and Catholic Charities has helped me find a job and a place to live.” Of course, not every part of adapting to a new life in a new country is simple. His wife, 31-year-old Ban Al Samraie, has enrolled in English class. There are few Iraqis around to associate with, and in this country families need two incomes. The children, ages 4 and 6, are adapting well “It’s not so easy for me,” Al Da- bagh sighed. “Everything is new, everything.” His brother, who came to the United States a few years ago, does live nearby and has been a help as well. Al Dabagh believes his family was targeted in Iraq because his parents — an engineer and a pharmacist — were well-to-do and also very well-known. He worries for his parents, with whom he speaks often. They refuse to leave Iraq because everything they own, homes and businesses will be taken away. Helping refugees is nothing new for the Catholic Church and has taken on greater importance in recent years. The procession to Lake Eola Park will begin forming 7 p.m. at the cathedral. ing a priest means becoming an ever closer friend of Jesus Christ with the whole of our existence. The world needs God — not just any god but the God of Jesus Christ, the God who made himself flesh and blood, who loved us to the point of dying for us, who rose and created within himself room for man. This God must live in us and we in him. This is our priestly call: only in this way can our action as priests bear fruit.” Our priests respond “Present” each and every day, and in so many ways, through their ministry to the People of God. Here in the Diocese of Orlando, we are served by priests from every inhabited continent. They may speak in many different accents, but thanks to their dedication and to their extraordinary love for the Lord they are here for us. Called to be “friends of Jesus,” these men have given their lives to show us the way to heaven. Let us ask that, through the intercession of St. John Mary Vianney, our priests will continue to grow in holiness — and, in this way, take Christ and his Gospel to the men and women of our times as John Vianney did in his times. n Paul II described the problems of refugees as “a shameful wound of our time.” “Helping refugees is in the spirit of the Church’s call to respect the dignity of each human person,” said Timmian Massie, professor of religious studies at New York’s Marist College. “We are called upon to be hospitable, to offer protection and reject forced repatriation. In the spirit of our time, this is not the most politically popular stance, but it is the Christian response to care for those in need.” For many years, countries were celebrating their own refugee day. Finally, efforts were coordinated to celebrate June 20 — long known as Refugee Day in Africa — worldwide. This was done mainly as a sign of solidarity with Africa, which traditionally has the highest number of refugees. Events that day — including a naturalization ceremony in Orlando featuring Bishop Thomas Wenski — are meant to focus on the fundamental need for protection from poverty, violence and other persecution. It is also about raising awareness to a worldwide, escalating problem. “I want to thank the people who have helped me,” Al Dabagh said. “They have done so much for us.” n CNS PHoTo St. John Vianney won converts to the faith through his holiness. It was then that the idea of raising money for the orphans came to me.” For the past three seasons of Lent, Natalia has asked fellow students to give up some of their lunch and snack money toward “A Kid for a Kid.” She also asked for donations from St. Charles’ families. The money collected would buy specific items or services through the Mercy for Children organization for the Congolese orphans, such as clean drinking water, bunk beds, food, medical supplies, clothing and construction of an orphanage. She has raised about $4,000 to benefit 57 orphans ages 4-11. Natalia also helped make cards for fellow students to send to the orphans with greetings and prayers in French. In 2009, Disney recognized 400 central Florida students as “Dreamers and Doers” for their community service and singled out the top 15 as “Shining Stars.” Natalia first heard about the orphans in the Democratic Republic of Congo in January 2007, when she attended a prayer meeting and heard Father Gabriel Ipasu — formerly parochial vicar of Blessed Trinity Parish in Ocala, now at Resurrection Parish in Lakeland — talk about his dream to build an orphanage in the African nation. Later, “A respect-life seminar and prayer meeting called ‘Suffering in Silence’ inspired me,” she said. “People of different religions gathered to call attention to children suffering on the other side of the world. These people put aside their differences to work for the orphans, the voiceless in the Congo, suffering from abuse, rape, kidnapping and homelessness.” According to an April 2009 report from the United Nations Children’s Fund, half a million people are living with HIV/AIDS in the Congo; more than 50,000 of them are children. UNICEF estimates the country’s population at 70 million. It was in the Congo that the first cases of HIV/AIDS were identified. Many children are orphaned by the disease, as well as by war and other violence. Orphans are left without the most basic necessities. Many children scrounge daily in the streets for food. After hearing about the children’s plight, Natalia came up with an idea of how students at St. Charles could help, and she asked permission of the administration to create “A Kid for a Kid” project. “I have so much and these children have so little,” Natalia said. “It felt sinful to think of complaining to my mother when the orphans don’t even have a mother. I go to bed safe and secure. The orphans huddle together wondering if they will eat tomorrow. I realize how fortunate we are. We have the ability to help the less fortunate. June 5-18, 2009 Your orlando communitY www.thefloridacatholic.org A15 Tredway Award winner finds God in helping others Laura DoDson Florida Catholic correspondent DELAND — Many times, those who minister to others often receive more help than they give. “A lady with all her troubles said to me, ‘Let’s pray together,’” said Robert Barbieri. “She saw that I was nervous. I was thinking, ‘I have a house, I have food. She had nothing and was Jesus to me.’” Barbieri, a member of St. Peter Parish in DeLand, received the sixth annual Floyd J. Tredway Award for Community Service at the “Faith in the Public Square Prayer Breakfast” on May 16 at St. Peter Parish in DeLand. The annual prayer breakfast benefits Catholic Charities of Central Florida Inc. The award was named for Floyd J. Tredway, “a kind and generous civic-minded person who lived his Catholic faith and loved his family, community and church,” according to the breakfast program. Barbieri received the recognition for his 25 years of championing the poor, homeless and imprisoned as executive director of the Neighbor Center in DeLand. In his acceptance of the award, Barbieri focused on those who made it possible. “A man wanted only a few slices of bread,” Barbieri said. “We told him he could have a whole loaf, but he wanted just the few slices. He said he couldn’t eat a whole loaf FloridaCatholic Your Faith. Your LiFe. Your CommunitY. and a few slices was all he needed — trusting his next meal would be provided.” Continuing, Barbieri repeated the question of another homeless man, “‘Does God still love me?’ He was feeling so hurt; he thought God had abandoned him. God has been good to me allowing me to help others.” Prior to coming to Florida from his native New York City, Barbieri had pursued a career in law enforcement and trained disadvantaged youths for similar careers. He was ordained a deacon for the Diocese of Orlando in 1983. In retirement, Barbieri and his wife, Eileen, regularly visit Chicago. While there, they spend time at St. Sabina Parish on the South Side of Chicago in ministry to families of children who are victims of violence. “All people are the same,” Barbieri concluded. “We’re just coming from different places. We’re all God’s people, just a little different, and God has a job for each one of us — something we have a talent for that we can do.” n For more information on Catholic Charities of Central Florida Inc., visit the Web site at www.cf lcc. org.
