Non-Warranted Carpet
Characteristics
Unless the warranty for your Karastan
product listed in this warranty brochure
specifically and expressly covers any item
listed below, then the Karastan warranties expressly exclude all of the following.
Please note that all references to carpet
shall also include rugs, unless specifically
excluded.
treatments will reduce exposure to direct
sunlight.
Appearance Retention
Indentations
All carpets will change in appearance over
time, primarily due to foot traffic. Carpet
in heavy traffic areas will exhibit the most
change. A good-quality cushion will help
extend the carpet’s appearance. Over time
and with use, the tips of the tufts in cutpile carpets will lose some twist, causing
the carpet to bloom. This is normal and
should be expected.
Footprints
Cut-pile carpets will show footprints and
vacuum cleaner marks. Selecting a carpet
with a lower pile height and denser construction will help to minimize this effect.
Furniture or other heavy objects can cause
indentations in your carpet. Furniture
coasters will help distribute the weight of
heavy objects over a larger area. Brushing
the affected carpet area with your fingertips will usually restore the crushed tufts
to their original position.
Matting
Crushing is the compaction of the pile
thickness due to foot traffic or furniture.
Regular use of a vacuum with a beater
bar in high-traffic areas may help reduce
changes in carpet’s appearance.
Entanglement of fibers and tufts of yarn
tips may be caused by a cushion failure;
usually it is due to improper maintenance.
Residue from a spill that was not cleaned
up thoroughly or cleaning residue that
was not rinsed completely will lead to
matting.
Fading or Color Loss
Shading
Crushing
Carpet may slowly lose color over time.
This can be caused by direct sunlight,
ozone, emissions from heating fuels, pesticides, cleaning agents, benzoyl peroxide
and other household items. Care should
be taken when using these items. Window
Shading is a change in pile direction that
results in an apparent change in color due
to the light reflecting in different ways.
Solid color cut-pile carpets will exhibit
this more often than textured or patterned
carpets. This is normal. Severe cases of

Characteristics
shading are also known as pooling or
watermarking and can result in permanent pile reversal after installation. No
cause for this is known, and it is usually
confined only to certain areas of an installation. Pooling or watermarking is not
considered a manufacturing defect.
Shedding
Shedding is a normal characteristic of cutpile carpets. It is more apparent in staple
products than continuous filament products. Regular vacuuming using a vacuum
cleaner with a beater bar will remove most
of the loose fibers during the first year.
Filtration Soiling
Dust, dirt, pollen, cooking vapors, and
other airborne pollutants may appear as
dark lines along walls, vents, and doorways. This is usually due to an imbalanced ventilation system that is incapable
of removing the volume of air entering
the room. The excess air escapes through
gaps between floors, walls, and doorways. Professional cleaning may remove
discoloration in affected areas, but the
condition will usually return unless ventilation problems are corrected. Carpet of
any quality will perform the same if subjected to filtration inefficiencies.
Wrinkling or Buckling
Wrinkling may occur after installation
and can be caused by excessive humidity, inadequate cushion, or failure to use
the recommended installation procedures
found in CRI-105, especially relative to
power stretching. A competent installer
can usually correct this problem.
Yellowing
Yellowing can have many causes, such
as BHT (butylated hydroxytoluene) offgassing from rebond pad, yarn lubricants,
over-application of stain-resistant treatments, changes in alkalinity, cleaning solutions, general soiling, and fume fading.
White vinegar applied to a clean white
towel and held on the carpet will indicate
if yellowing can be removed. If this works,
a 10% solution of citric acid applied by a
professional cleaner will usually remove
yellowing. Yellowing is not considered a
manufacturing defect.
Each of these items is characteristic of
carpet and is not considered a manufacturing defect. However, these conditions
can be avoided or minimized by following
the carpet care and installation recommendations included in this brochure.

Homeowner Obligations
Under Karastan Warranties
What You Must Do:
To maintain and protect your coverage
under the terms of these warranties, you
must do the following:
1. Know which warranties apply to your
particular carpet. Warranties are stated
on the backs of samples in the store
at the time of purchase. It is your
responsibility to know which warranties
apply to your carpet.
2. Keep proof of your purchase in the form
of a bill, invoice, or statement from
your Karastan retailer that shows the
price you paid for the carpet (excluding
labor).
3. Install your carpet according to the
recommendations in the “Installation
Recommendations” section of this
brochure, including the guidelines in
the Carpet and Rug Institute Residential
Installation Standard CRI-105, and
maintain your carpet according to
Karastan recommendations in the
“Carpet Care” section of this brochure.
5. Show proof of periodic cleanings by a
certified professional cleaning service.
A bill, invoice, or statement showing
cleaning services will serve as proof of
cleaning.
6. Have a minimum of one (1) professional
cleaning every 12 -18 months using
cleaning products, equipment or
systems specified with the Carpet and
Rug Institute Seal of Approval. Visit
www.carpet-rug.org for a complete list
of certified products.
7. Only clean your carpet with cleaners
specified with a CRI Seal of Approval.
Do not clean your carpet with household
bleach.
Failure to comply with your Homeowner
Obligations will void your Karastan Carpet
warranty.
4. Install
your
carpet
with
the
appropriate carpet cushion meeting
the recommended specifications for
the warranted Karastan carpet and
further explained in the “Cushion
Recommendations” section of this
brochure.
The Karastan Commitment Consumer Assurance Warranty

Installation Recommendations
Karastan dealers have been carefully
chosen based on their dedication to quality
and their demonstrated ability to provide
superior installation. Improper installation
of your carpet can cause problems that
are not covered by your warranty. The
following
recommendations
outline
minimum standards and are explained
more completely in the industry’s
installation standard CRI-105, which is
available to all Karastan dealers.
Certified Installer Information
Visit karastan.com for more information
on Karastan Certified Installation along
with a listing of Karastan dealers that offer
Certified Installation.
3. Use a Good Quality Cushion. Cushion plays an important role in the
overall performance of your carpet
by absorbing the impact and shock of
foot traffic. Cushion of inappropriate
density, thickness, or construction may
result in accelerated loss of appearance
retention, matting, packing, wrinkling,
buckling, and the separation of the
carpet backing or seams. Cushion
density becomes even more important
in carpets of lower pile weight or
density.
1. AllInstallationsMustBePowerStretched.
After seaming, the installation must be
power stretched in all directions. This
helps prevent buckling and provides
greater stability.
2. Use Seam Sealer on All Seams. All seams
must be sealed by applying a bead of
latex seam sealer to the cut edges. The
seam sealer will lock in the tufts along
the edge of the seam and prevent the
loss of tufts at the seams.

Smartstrand Cleaning
Guidelines
A) Stain Removal
Please contact the fiber producer prior to
any cleaning attempts. The use of nonapproved cleaning methods or agents will
void your stain protection warranty.
• Treatment of the affected area should
begin immediately upon discovery. The
more time that elapses before treatment,
the more difficult a stain will be to remove.
• First, scrape food spill gently with a
spoon or dull knife, removing as much
solid material as possible.
• Try to remove stains with warm water
only. If stain cannot be removed with a
warm wet cloth, or warm water extraction,
apply a low-residue carpet spot remover
with the Carpet and Rug Institute Seal of
Approval to the stain.
• Working from outer edge toward the
center to avoid spreading. Blot with a
clean cloth or paper towel. Do not rub or
scrub. Continue to spray and blot until the
stain is gone. Do not over-saturate carpet;
use small amounts of solution and blot
frequently.
• Important: Do not use any cleaner with a
pH of 10 or higher. Before using, always
test cleaners on a small, non-visible area
for any discoloration of the pile.
• Abnormally large or excessive stains may
require hot water extraction method.
Professional cleaning is recommended.
• If stain returns—a condition known as
“wicking”—simply repeat stain removal
procedures, paying special attention to
blotting and removal of all moisture.
B) Regular Vacuuming
Most dirt, and even dust, takes the form
of hard particles. When left in the carpet,
these gritty, sharp particles abrade the
pile of the carpet. Regular vacuuming not
only prolongs the life of the carpet but
will enhance its appearance as well. Most
soiling in carpet is of the dry particle type,
which can be removed with a vacuum
cleaner.
• Vacuum high-traffic areas daily, mediumto-high traffic areas twice weekly, and the
entire house at least once a week.
• Use a vacuum with a rotating brush or
beater bar. Change the bags often and
check the beater bars for burs and gouges
to prevent damage to the surface of the
carpet. However, please note that carpet
with thick loop pile, and shag/cabled
construction may become fuzzy or worn
with use of a beater bar vacuum. Karastan
recommends the use of a suction-only
vacuum for these carpet constructions.

C) Additional Recommendations
• Use of mats or runners at all home
entrances and on uncarpeted areas
adjacent to carpet will reduce soil and
moisture in traffic areas. Clean mats
and any other rugs placed over carpet
regularly.
for a complete list of certified products.)
Periodic cleaning by a certified carpet
care professional using the hot water
extraction method will refresh carpet
appearance.
• Karastan recommends using furniture
coasters to distribute the weight of
heavy items, especially on furniture with
wheels. Use a protective barrier between
the wheels and the carpet.
• The most-used areas — entrances,
doorways, traffic lanes and in front of
chairs—will collect dirt faster than other
areas. Clean these areas as soon as they
begin to show soil. This will stop dirt
from spreading and will extend the time
between professional cleanings.
• To extend the beauty of your carpeting,
close drapes or blinds during hours of
direct sunlight.
Using a Cleaning Method Other Than
Those Approved by the fiber producer
Will Void Your Stain Protection Warranty.
•E
xercise extreme caution with all
bleaches, tile cleaners, mildew removers,
oven cleaners, drain openers and plant
food. These are strong chemicals that
can permanently discolor or dissolve
carpet fibers.
Your new Karastan carpet or rug
represents a substantial investment
and, like all fine furnishings, requires
proper care to maintain its beauty. That
is why we recommend that you follow
this maintenance guide to protect your
investment. Regular cleaning, with the
right equipment, will prolong the life of
your carpet and assure many, many years
of enjoyment.
D) Cleaning Recommendations
• Even with regular vacuuming, soil
particles and oily dirt will cling to carpet
fibers. Foot traffic drives these particles
and dirt deep into the carpet. Karastan
recommends professional hot water
extraction every 12 to 18 months using
cleaning products, equipment or systems
that carry the Carpet and Rug Institute
Seal of Approval. (Visit www.carpet-rug.org

Synthetic Carpet and Rug
Cleaning Guidelines
1. Vacuuming
Carpets receive a terrific beating in ordinary use—pounding traffic, dirt, grit, dust,
oily cooking vapors and spills of all descriptions. The dry soils can be removed
and prevented from building up to an unsightly level by frequent vacuuming with
a good machine.
For cut pile carpet, we strongly recommend a vacuum cleaner with a rotating
beater bar, which agitates the carpet pile
and mechanically loosens soil for the vacuum to remove. Those without this feature
remove surface dirt well but often leave
imbedded soil, which damages the carpet
fiber by abrasion. Additionally, matting or
packing will occur in high traffic areas if
the carpet pile is not sufficiently agitated
or lifted. For sisal and berber textures, we
recommend a vacuum with suction only
to avoid damaging the loops.
For higher pile shag carpets, we recommend a vacuum cleaner with a strong suction. A canister type vacuum with a power
head works best. Rollers on the canister
head should be at the back. Front rollers
do not allow for ease of vacuum. We do
not recommend and upright vacuum with
a beater brush.
For rooms with light traffic, vacuum the
traffic lanes twice weekly and the entire area once weekly. Those areas with
heavier traffic require that traffic lanes be
vacuumed daily and the entire area twice
weekly. Up to three passes of the machine
will suffice for light soiling, but five to
seven passes are necessary for heavily
soiled traffic areas.
Some tips for more effective vacuuming:
Make sure the belt is in good condition
and that the beater actually rotates when
in contact with the carpet.
Height adjustment is correct when the
beater contacts the pile enough to vibrate
the carpet lightly several inches away
from the machine, but not enough to
cause a significant slowing of the motor.
Never allow the soil bag to become over
half full, or efficiency will suffer. Vacuuming across the traffic pattern occasionally,
rather than in the traffic direction, will
help prevent matting. Please follow standard vacuuming guidelines for synthetic carpet.
2. Cleaning Carpets
While vacuuming is sufficient to remove
most dry soil, the oily soil coming from
cooking vapors, air pollution, and elements tracked from the street, presents
a different type problem. These particles
of oily soil deposited on carpet fibers
can cause gradual but significant dulling
of delicate pastel colors; the color is not

Synthetic Carpet and Rug
Cleaning Guidelines
lost but hidden under the film. If this type
soil is allowed to accumulate, it literally
glues the pile fiber together resulting in
matting, packing or ridges and begins
to attract and also hold the dry soil. This
is the reason cleaning is so important
when dulling of the color is first noticed.
If allowed to remain too long, it becomes
gummy and difficult to remove. Practice
extreme care in vacuuming your area
rugs ... particularly at the fringe. It is best
to avoid use of a vacuum cleaner with a
beater bar in this area of the rug because
of the possibility of catching the fringe in
the cleaner. This can cause separation of
the weaving behind the fringe and can
damage the rug. (This occurrence is not
considered a manufacturing defect.)
3. Cleaning Methods
Using a Cleaning Method Other Than
Those Approved by the Fiber Producer
Will Void You are Stain Protection Warranty.
Please contact the fiber producer prior to
any cleaning attempts. The use of nonapproved cleaning methods or agents will
void your stain protection warranty.
Several methods of cleaning produce
satisfactory results, but one point is universal — clean the carpet or rug before
it becomes too unsightly; the cleaning
chore will be easier and more successful.
Some of the methods found acceptable
are detailed here. However, each has
limitations, which should be considered.
Contact your local Karastan dealer or the
appropriate fiber producer for additional
information.
Method
Dry Powder
Uses absorbent particles worked into
the pile with machine and removed by
vacuum.
Professional or do-it-yourself.
Dry Foam and Absorbent Pad
Fluffy detergent foam worked into pile by
variety of machines, dried residue vacuumed out.
Professional use only.
Characteristics: Uses no water, little skill
required. Carpet ready for use immediately. Sometimes hard to remove all cleaning
residues from deep pile. Not always effective for areas which may be heavily soiled
or matted.
Little water, dries fast. Cleans surface well.
Over brushing can damage some carpets.

Synthetic Carpet and Rug
Cleaning Guidelines
Steam Cleaning (Hot Water Extraction)
Professional or do-it-yourself.
Characteristics: Extraction of cleaning solution and soil leaves little residue, no pile
damage. Caution needed to prevent over
wetting. Avoid use of too much detergent;
follow up with plain water. Recommended
for all carpet types. Most effective when
performed by a professional using an external “hot water” extraction unit.
Carpet pilating or grooming should be
incorporated with all professional cleanings. Use of a professional pile lifter vacuum may be effective in restoring matted
or ridged carpeting.
Caution: The Rotary Brush Wet Shampoo
method is not recommended for residential carpet, as damage can result. In addition, some do-it-yourself products in aerosol cans can cause rapid resoiling due to
excessive residues. Test on a scrap first; if
the dried product feels sticky do not use
it. Avoid all cleaning agents containing
optical brighteners (fluorescence) such as
those found in many laundry detergents
and some carpet cleaning systems.
4. Stain Removal
No carpet is stain proof; although many
are treated to be stain resistant, giving
you time to act. Immediately after a stain
or spill occurs, absorb as much liquid as
possible with paper towels, etc., replacing
as they become saturated. Use a blotting
action, never a scrubbing motion, to prevent fuzzing the carpet surface.
If your carpet is warranted under Scotchgard, Invista, or Solutia stain protection
warranty, consult the 800 number listed
in the Stain Protection section of this brochure.
Using a Cleaning Method Other Than
Those Approved by the Fiber Producer
Will Void Your Stain Protection Warranty.
If one of the above brands does not
warrant your carpet, the following rules
should be observed for spot removal:
• Treatment of the affected area should
begin immediately upon discover. The
more time that elapses before treatment, the more difficult a stain will be to
remove.
• First, scrape food spill gently with a
spoon or dull knife removing as much
solid material as possible.
• Apply low residue carpet spot remover
that has obtained the Carpet and Rug
Institute Seal of Approval to the stain.

Wool Carpet and Rug Cleaning
Guidelines
1. Vacuum regularly
3. Cleaning Recommendations.
The most important maintenance step is
proper vacuuming. Regular and thorough
vacuuming at least once a week and more
often in heavy traffic areas will remove
soil and dirt particles before they become
embedded into the pile of the carpet. Remember, you cannot over vacuum, and
vacuuming should begin the day the carpet is installed.
Professionally clean as required, usually not more than once every one or two
years. We recommend a “Woolcare Specialist” certified by ASCR. Call 800-2727012 for a professional cleaner near you.
2. Spot and Spill Removal - Remove spills
immediately
One of the most crucial areas of carpet
maintenance is removal of spots and
spills. Acting quickly when anything is
dropped or spilled and always having the
necessary cleaning material at hand are
of the utmost importance.
The recommended method is to blot up
liquids with white paper towel, absorbent
cloth, or Absorb-It™. Scoop up solids
with the end of a knife or spoon and then
treat the spot according to the cleaning
instructions guide. Apply spot removal
agent to clean towel or cloth, not directly
to the spot. Use small quantities at a time.
Always work inwards from the edge to
prevent spreading. Do not rub, as this
may cause the spot to spread or distort
the pile. Do not over-wet the carpet pile.
Afterwards, blot as dry as possible with
clean towel, then cover with Absorb-It or
paper towels, and let dry.
Wool Wisdom
• Frequent vacuuming is a wool carpet’s
best friend.
• An upright or canister type vacuum with
a rotating beater bar/brush is the best
type for cut pile carpet.
• A suction-only vacuum should be used
for loop pile Berber carpets to prevent
excessive fuzzing. Vacuum cleaning dust
bag should be emptied when half full.
• Exercise prevention maintenance by
placing absorbent mats at the most frequently used entrances to your home.
Change or launder when these mats
become dirty. Filters in your heating
and air conditioning systems should be
changed regularly.
• Clean traffic lanes and in front of frequently used chairs periodically with an
absorbent powder (such as Host,® Capture,® and Dri-Matic®).

59
Wool Carpet and Rug Cleaning
Guidelines
• Keep a WoolClean Carpet Spot Removal
Kit on hand for quick response to spills
and accidents available at your local
Karastan Retailer or at Karastan.com.
• When having your wool carpet professionally cleaned, use a reputable company and check references.
CLEANING AGENTS FOR SPOT REMOVAL
Detergent Solution
Mix one teaspoon of clear dish washing
liquid or detergent powder (containing no
bleaches or strong alkalies) with a cup of
warm (not hot) water. This solution must
be well rinsed with clear water. WoolClean
Spot Remover #1 is part of the WoolClean
Spot Removal Kit
Do not apply stain repellent treatments,
which contain any silicone because they
tend to accelerate carpet soiling. (Some
carpet manufacturers do not accept responsibility for complaints where such
treatments have been used.)
Always pre-test a cleaning agent in an inconspicuous place, such as under a piece
of furniture or in the corner of the room,
to insure that it does not remove color.
Please contact the fiber producer for your
Karastan carpet prior to any cleaning attempts. The use of non-approved cleaning methods or agents will void your stain
protection warranty.
Absorbent Cleaners:
Host®, Capture®, Dri-Matic®
WARNINGS
Some chemicals are hazardous (corrosive,
flammable, toxic, etc.) and should be used
with great care, strictly in accordance with
their use and safety instructions.
Do not apply solvent-containing products
or Dry Spot Remover #2 to bonded carpets
(carpets that are not tufted or woven, but
where the pile is bonded to the backing).
When applying Dry Spot Remover #2 or
other solvent-containing products, have
the work area well ventilated.
