was surgeon who was convicted for mutiny and after four

became the assistant surgeon at Norfolk Island. He
received a pardon a mere two years after arrival in
Australia, he was a strong supporter of improving the

Gavin Duffy, Nice, Jan, 1898. Sir Duffy migrated from Ireland
to Melbourne Australia and quickly moving into the Victorian
parliament and eventually Premier. Duffy was more of a
political reformist than what the Melbournians were expecting.
One of his first bills was to have suffrage for all men of voting
age in Victoria not just the land owners. The bookplate is from
Marion Hary Spielmann who was the editor of the Magaine of
Art and the The Connoisseur. One presumes that they were
friends due to Duffy’s original editorship of The Nation and
Spielmann’s magazines for lively debate. (ADBD Vol. 4). 21222
