Tony-Winning Billy Elliott Trio Geek Out With Indy By: Frank DiGiacomo June 9, 2009 Billy Elliott stars David Alvarez, Trent Kowalik, and Kiril Kulish enjoy a hard-earned moment of freedom. Hey, Trent Kowalik, David Alvarez, and Kiril Kulish, you just won a Tony for Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a Musical. What are you going to do next? Well, Monday evening the three teenage alternating leads of Billy Elliott were crowded around a flat-screen TV monitor at the Nintendo World store on Rockefeller Plaza punching and grappling their way through LucasArts new Wii game, Indiana Jones and the Staff of Kings. As filmmaker James Toback, actress Debra Winger, Project Playlist C.E.O. John Sykes, and Beastie Boy Adam Yauch wandered around the video gamery’s second floor space trying out the giveaway Indy fedoras and toy bullwhips, Kowalik managed a phone interview in between playing the game and watching his co-stars and some cousins who’d accompanied him take their turn. When I ran into him, the World Irish Dancing champion (who’s actually from Long Island) was watching another player pilot Indiana Jones through a treacherous canyon in a stolen Nazi biplane. I asked if he and his fellow Billys played a lot of video games, and he sheepishly told me, ―on our days off,‖ which yesterday happened to be. One of his favorites, he said, was another Nintendo game, Legend of Zelda. (Attention Shigeru Miyamoto: Perhaps it’s time to consider a Wagnerian Broadway spinoff?) And yet, after a few hours of virtual role-playing, Kowalik and his co-star Kulish returned to the kind that they knew best: the klieg lights and grease paint of Broadway, where they caught Grey’s Anatomy actress Chandra Wilson in her debut as Mama Morton in Chicago—and all that jazz. Gaming Preferences of the Three Billy Elliots, Revealed! By: Irina Aleksander June 9, 2009 Around 7 p.m. on Monday, June 8, NY1 anchor Pat Kiernan tweeted the following: ―Just got a preview of the new Indiana Jones Wii game at the Nintendo store. Got an Indy hat.‖ Mr. Kiernen posted a photo of himself, smiling and hands on hips, wearing the floppy fedora. About an hour earlier, the Transom had been hanging out with the affable Mr. Kiernan at the Nintedo store at Rockefeller Center for the launch of the game, along with his wife, Dawn, and young daughters, Maeve and Lucy. ―We probably don’t play as much as we would if we had boys at home,‖ Mr. Kiernan said of his Wii, which he uses with his wife after the kids go to bed. ―We might have a Wii tennis battle at like 10 p.m., but then we usually just get tired so it doesn’t last very long,‖ he said. He looked down at his 3-year-old daughter. ―Maeve, how are we at tennis?‖ The little girl was busy nibbling on a black-and-white cookie. ―Maeve has a wicked serve,‖ Mr. Kiernan said. ―I don’t know what it is about her being 3 feet tall, but she can ace the serves.‖ Around the room, the children of model Irina Pantaeva, Live With Regis and Kelly executive producer Michael Gellman and actress Debra Winger were hungrily gripping their Wii controllers. ―I haven’t even been allowed on!‖ said Ms. Winger of the gaming console her son, Babe Howard, received for his birthday recently. ―That’s not true!‖ young Babe protested. Most of the adults’ attention was soon focused on the three Billy Elliots—David Alvarez, Trent Kowalik and Kiril Kulish—who had taken home Tonys the previous night. ―They called my name, and I just went up there and I completely forgot what I was supposed to say,‖ said David, 15. ―It was unbelievable. I was speechless!‖ Trent, 14, said. Back to the video games. ―Every so often we get to play,‖ he said, ―Usually on our day off, which is Monday.‖ ―I can only play for like an hour, and then I feel like I have to start getting exercise again,‖ said David, adding that ―shooting games‖ were his favorite. Trent likes The Legend of Zelda, and Kiril, 15, the shyest of the boys, said he prefers Super Mario Galaxy. Guest of a Guest… Indiana Jones And The Staff Of Kings Arrives On Wii By Rachel Brill June 9th, 2009 [Trent Kowalik, David Alvarez, Kiril Kulish. Photos via PMc] Last night I visited the Nintendo store to check out the new Wii game, “Indiana Jones and the Staff of Kings,” which was released today. Set in the year 1939, the game follows the rogue archaeologist on an all-new globe-trotting quest. To get guests in the mood, everyone was given their very own Indiana Jones hat and a whip that makes whip-like noises and plays the Indiana Jones theme song. I restrained my urges to whip my friends and instead tried my hand at the game at one of the many Wii stations set up around the store. Luckily some helpful Lucas Arts staff were on hand to teach me how to use the Wii remote to beat up my enemies, fly a plane through a canyon, and swing across an abyss. Fun! Having just watched the Tony’s the night before, I was delighted to spot all three of the adorable Billy Elliots at one of the Wii stations! I couldn’t resist going up to David Alvarez and telling him how awesome he was. Many celebs came out with their families including Beastie Boy’s Adam Yauch and daughter Tenzin, Debra Winger, the three Billy Elliots (David Alvarez, Kiril Kulish, Trent Kowalik), Alexis Glick and her family, Irina Pantaeva, Elizabeth Vargas, E.J. Bonilla, Jami Floyd, Michael Gelman, Pat Kiernan, Bill McCuddy, Tim Minton, Norman Reedus, John Sykes, and James Toback. All the guests received a copy of the game on their way out. Visit the Nintendo store at Rockefeller Center to pick up your own copy of the game today! VEV LYN 'S P EN Indy Style: Missing stars be damned, the launch goes on It's Monday night at the Nintendo World Store in Rockefeller Plaza and the preview of the newest and third installment in the "Indiana Jones" game franchise, "Indiana Jones and the Staff of Kings," is on! But there seems to be some stars missing. Sure, there's Debra Winger near the top of the staircase looking every inch the New Jersey soccer mom. And to my right is Elizabeth Vargas, looking like a resident of Wisteria Lane. My companion, though has a Christiane Amanpour jones – CNN's Barbara Walters of the Middle East – wondering where in the world is she and what exactly is her connection to gamer culture. I haven't a clue, but do weigh in on M.I.A. Al Roker. I deduce that he's a noshow because he is likely home having a low-calorie, high-nutrient dinner or getting ready for bed – lest we miss the weather in our neck of the woods Tuesday morning. And where is Himself, H.F.? One of the marketing people from LucaArts cited a scheduling onflict, which sounded credible enough. A few less stars than promised didn't seem to put a damper on the festivities on the second floor of the store. There are merchandise tie-ins galore, and "Staff of Kings" is the main attraction on a number of TV screens being hogged by people who are definitely under 12 years of age. This explains the separate bar that has several jucies and Pepsi – not Coke, along with the cupcakes, rice crispy rectangles and brownies. No doubt the under-12s are very influential gamer bloggers. For the adults who aren't in the mood for games, there is an awesomely cool Indy fedora in chocolate and steel gray. And Catwoman would definitely envy that cool, black whip. As an extra bonus, there is a parting gift of "Staff of Kings," which rolls out to the masses Tuesday. It's set in 1939 and concerns Indy's search for the staff of Moses. Let my Indy go! Nintendo Wii Indiana Jones Game Launch Tuesday, June 9, 2009 Irina & Son Turned into a 12-year old child at the launch of the new Indiana Jones Game for Nintendo Wii! Set in 1939, Indiana Jones and the Staff of Kings ™ follows Indy from San Francisco’s Chinatown to the jungles of Panama on a race against his nemesis, Magnus Völler, for the biblical relic the Staff of Moses. On arrival, guests were given Indiana hats and toy whips, which helped set the mood. There were cocktails for the parents and adults in attendance and excellent catering by Thomas Preti, which included such family friendly items as mini-burgers and fries, the most delicious chicken quesadillas I have ever had, and a whole table of yummy sweets. Got to congratulate David Alvarez, Trent Kowalick, and Kiril Kulish the three boys from “Billy Elliott” on their Tony win and they showed us a few moves on the game. Met the wonderful Jami Floyd of Court TV (now TruTV) when I spied her juggling her family’s hats, a drink, and a pig in the blanket and offered to get her a bag. Had a laugh with one of the Lucas Arts developers of the game when I teased him about men not really being able to measure inches accurately. Also, in attendance were hottie Norman Reedus, (I’ll admit to a crush there!) with his beautiful son Mingus, Irina Pantaeva with her cute little one, Elizabeth Vargas with her family, Adam Yauch of the Beastie Boys with his amazingly tall 10 year old daughter, and EJ Bonilla, who plays “Rafe”, on the “Guiding Light”. Multiple consoles allowed everyone to play the game so my friend and PR rep, Hillary and I tried it out. We were useless! Our Indiana just kept walking around and occasionally we managed to get him to grab a weapon. But we couldn’t get him into any real action. On the console behind us, I watched in amazement as Jami Floyd’s little girl had her Indy just beating the bad guys down as if she had been playing the game for years! It’s like kids are coming out of the womb with a Wii remote in their hands. I have a load of practicing to do to catch up! The last, but not least, wonderful thing about this launch is that we were actually gifted with the game on the way out! I have not been to a better or more fun and perfectly executed event in a very long time. Kudos to Melanie and the gals at Peggy Siegal PR for thinking of everything! Nintendo Wii Indiana Jones Game Launch June 11, 2009 by John Simon Indiana Jones and the Staff of Kings, the new adventurous and action packed video game created by LucasArts for several game consoles, including the Wii. The game is the third in the series of original 3D Indiana Jones games. The other games included Indiana Jones and the Emperor’s Tomb and Indiana Jones and the Infernal Machine. The plot centers around Indiana Jones search for the Staff of Moses. It is set in 1939 (the year World War II begins, 18 years before the events in Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, and 1 year after The Last Crusade) and features a sequence set in San Francisco, involving a brawl outside a fireworks factory, a fight atop a runaway cable car, and much more action packed adventures. Thanks to Melanie Blum and the team at Peggy Siegal for granting us access to the launch event at the Nintendo World Store earlier this week where we enjoyed endless amounts of game play on the various consoles and delicious food, catered by Thomas Preti Caterers, Inc. Who provided everything from french fries, chicken quesadillas, mini- burgers (our fave), to mini-cupcakes. Thomas Preti Caterers was founded by Chef Thomas Preti and his partner Michael Bonizio in 1987 and to date had become one of New Yorks premier catering services. Guests received a signature Indiana Jones hat and toy whip as they entered the 2nd floor of the store, which was a hit with the children (including us lol). One excited kids told us that his new costume made him feel like the real Indiana Jones as he played the game. We couldn’t agree more! Celebrity guests for the evening included; Elizabeth Vargas, Jami Floyd, Michael Gelman, Adam Yauch, EJ Bonilla, Irina Pantaeva, Pat Kiernan, Alexis Glick, Bill McCuddy, Tim Minton, Norman Reedus, James Toback, Debra Winger, and 2009 TONY Award winners (Best Performance by a Leading Actor) the Billy’s from ―Billy Elliot – The Musical―- David Alvarez, Trent Kowalik and Kiril Kulish. Great fun filled night! As always, we have some wonderful pictures for your viewing pleasure.
