Angie’s Main Café
Receives Vision 2017 Grants
Angie’s Main Cafe in Shawano, has received Facade and Interior Grants totaling
$6,166 through Shawano Country Vision
2017. The matching grants were awarded to
help cover costs for improvements to the
business front and interior. Improvements
included combining two front entrances into
one creating an attractive and inviting entrance, improving the front and rear exterior
façades, increasing seating space, updating
restrooms, and emphasizing their 1950’s
décor.
Angie Bistoff opened her retro-style diner
in 1998. Her vision was to serve quality
home-cooked meals that not only taste good
but are good for you. Originally home of
Dehn’s Ice Cream Parlor, the diner retains
the horseshoe shaped counter, 1950’s décor,
and friendly atmosphere. Bistoff credited
her friend Matty Mathison for completing
much of the planning and sweat equity invested to transform the space. Since the
beginning of the project, Bistoff has hired
two additional people bringing her total
employee count to 12.
According to Dennis Heling, chief economic development officer for Shawano
County Economic Progress, Inc., the improvements made to Angie’s Main Café
position the diner to attract more customers
and increase sales. “This project allowed
Angie to capitalize on the unique and nostalgic attributes of her business. Focusing
and improving on her uniqueness is something that brings people in and keeps them
returning,” said Heling.
Since 2013, thirty six grants totaling
$125,000 have been awarded to small businesses through the Vision 2017 Façade and
Interior Grant programs. This has stimulated total private investment of over
$920,000. Grants have been awarded to
businesses throughout Shawano County in
the communities of Tigerton, Wittenberg,
Gresham, Eland, Bonduel, and Shawano.

Shawano Country Vision 2017 is a five-year
economic development plan strategically
designed to address various needs of area
businesses and communities. The plan’s
overall goal is to spur capital investment and
grow the economy by implementing specific
action steps in key areas, including business
expansion, attraction and recruitment; tourism/retail development, workforce issues,
and community development.
This plan was initiated three years ago by
the board of directors of Shawano County
Economic Progress Inc. and the Shawano
Country Chamber of Commerce to proactively tackle economic challenges including
several plant closures, job losses, and lower
than average per capita income. It serves as
one resource for future growth and prosperity and a stronger economic climate for
Shawano and Menominee Counties.
Calling All Super Heroes & Villains for the 26th Annual Golf Outing!
Grab your mask and cape and get to the 26th Annual Shawano Country Chamber of Commerce Golf Outing in a flash! It will be held on
Tuesday, June 28th at Golden Sands Golf Course in Cecil.
Golfers are encouraged to get creative with this year’s Super Hero
theme. Come as your favorite caped crusader, masked marvel, or evil
villain. Prizes will be awarded for best dressed golfer, team and cart.
Our golf outing is 4-person scramble. The team must be co-ed to be
eligible for awards.
Registration begins at 10 a.m. with a shotgun
start at 11 a.m. Dinner will start at 5:00 p.m.
The cost is $75 per player, which includes 18
holes with cart, dinner, raffle tickets and
chances to win prizes. The cost for dinner only
is $30. Reservations are required before June
9 in order to guarantee your cart. Don’t miss

as a docent for museum tours.
Scott Parson, FIC CLTC, a Financial
Consultant with Thrivent Financial, has
qualified to attend the Summit Circle
conference by providing outstanding
financial guidance, solutions and service
to members of the organization in 2015.

The 11th annual Green Bay Packers
Tailgate Tour is set to visit Shawano at 6
p.m. on June 21. The event, which will
be held at the Crawford Center, will
include food, giveaways, question-andanswer sessions and autographs. General

from each of the Packer players in attendance and admittance to the tailgate

On Wednesday, April 13, 1,100 students from 19 different
schools attended the 19th Annual 8th Grade Career Fair at the
Clintonville Middle School. This event has grown tremendously over the past few years into one of the largest events
of its kind in Northeastern Wisconsin. Fox Valley Technical
College along with the Clintonville Chamber of Commerce
and Shawano Country Chamber of Commerce organize this
annual event. Over 50 area businesses exhibited and shared
information on careers available within their business. Each
exhibitor represents at least one of the 16 Career Clusters
identified by the Wisconsin Department of Instruction.
Ribbon Cutting
This exposure to area careers is an important piece of the
workforce development puzzle. When young students realize
there are many careers available locally, they may be more
likely to stay in this area after their schooling.
Students prepared prior to attending the event by completing
an “Interest Inventory”, which helped them pinpoint their top
three Career Cluster picks. They then identified what businesses/organizations attending the event matched their top
Career Clusters. At the Career Fair they had the opportunity
to talk with real people working within the industry. The area
technical colleges--Fox Valley Technical College (FVTC) and
Northeast Wisconsin Technical College (NWTC)-- along with
College of Menominee Nation, also attended the event. Students talked to the exhibitors about what type of training/
education they need to do a certain job/career and could then
visit the college booths to learn more about what programs
they offer that would help them in their career goals.
Navarino Nature Center recently celebrated its 30th anniversary
with a special dedication and ribbon cutting of the new
Accessible Exploring Habitats Boardwalk & Trail.
Exhibitors set up hands-on, interactive booths, which allowed
the students to really explore what a potential career might be
like. All of the exhibitors attend the event on their own time by
volunteering to be part of this event for the students. The
Career Fair allows students to see all the different career
opportunities they have right here within their communities.

Rural Communities in Shawano
County Get Fit
Use it or lose it! That’s the philosophy behind Strong Women, Strong Bones, an evidence-based strength training
program that improves bone density, increases flexibility and strength, reduces falls and improves arthritis symptoms.
The program began in Shawano County in 2014 with one class of 30 participants. It has grown to 14 classes, and 450
participants throughout the county. Through an SACF grant, additional trained instructors and equipment will be added
in order to expand the program to five more communities in rural Shawano County.
Nancy Schulz is a Family Living Educator with Shawano County UW-Extension, and coordinator of the Strong Women,
Strong Bones program. According to Schultz, the program addresses mental as well as physical health. “Studies have
shown that regular exercise improves mood and attitude, decreases depression and increases energy level. Our goal is to
help participants stay strong, enjoy others' company and build a new circle of friends,” says Schultz.

improve the quality of life in Shawano and the surrounding area. We partner with the Community Foundation for the
