SIRONA’S INTERNATIONAL CLINIC PROJECTS
THE PERFECT ENVIRONMENT
FOR TEACHING AND STUDYING.
“WE STRIVE TO MAKE OUR
UNIVERSITY UNIQUE.”
WHAT WAS THE MOTIVATION BEHIND FOUNDING A PRIVATE UNIVERSITY?
Marga Wagner-Pischel: “We have been involved in the university teaching of international postgraduate dentists for a decade now.
As part of the specialization of postgraduate dental professionals from all around the world – today we have some 3,500 students
– the idea of developing a completely new dentistry degree program for undergraduates was born. And so we got to work!”
IT TOOK ONLY THREE AND A HALF YEARS FROM THE INITIAL IDEA TO THE FINISHED UNIVERSITY. HOW DID YOU ACHIEVE THIS?
Marga Wagner-Pischel: “We founded the university completely on our own. Our fantastic network of numerous dentists and
academics from the most respected universities provided us with help and advice during development. Our friend Prof. Dr. Dr.
Dieter Müßig acted as the academic partner in the foundation phase. First of all, the Austrian Accreditation Council had to be
convinced of our plans. We successfully ensured accreditation of our dentistry degree (Dr. med. dent.) within the space of three
and a half years; there are currently 400 students, ultimately this figure will be 560.”
WHAT WERE THE CRITERIA FOR THE EQUIPPING OF YOUR TRAINING CENTERS?
Marga Wagner-Pischel: “We are committed to being an elite institution. We strive to achieve ‘dental excellence’ with compliance to
state-of-the-art academic standards. This demands excellent facilities from the industry’s leading suppliers.”
02 / 03
WHAT ROLE DOES TECHNOLOGY PLAY IN TERMS OF YOUR EQUIPMENT AND FACILITIES?
Marga Wagner-Pischel: “Although we are not a very big university, in terms of technological standards we are
among the best in the world. State-of-the-art technology must be coupled with traditional medical values. For us,
conservative dentistry and medical ethics are a top priority. Sirona provides the most modern technology and
we are delighted that we can pass on this high standard to future dentists.”
BESIDES TECHNOLOGY, WHAT OTHER ASPECTS WERE IMPORTANT WHEN SELECTING THE EQUIPMENT AND
FACILITIES?
Marga Wagner-Pischel: “The very latest scientific know-how as regards technological developments and the
esthetics and harmony of designs all played a central role when setting up the DPU. Compared to other competitors,
Sirona undoubtedly offers the most perfect and elegant products which successfully meet all these criteria. The
particular design characteristics and style of the Sirona units harmonize perfectly with the university’s furnishings.
Against a backdrop of world cultural heritage, the Wachau valley, vineyards and the meandering Danube, the
university is located in a region which sets the highest of esthetic standards. Together with the furniture supplier,
Freuding, Sirona provided us with outstanding support and assistance.”
OTHER COMPANIES ALSO SUBMITTED OFFERS. WHY WAS SIRONA CHOSEN?
Marga Wagner-Pischel: “We are very pleased with our decision in favor of Sirona. For me, the esthetic aspect was just
as important as the technological one when selecting the equipment. Since we are a special university which displays
art in all its rooms and which celebrates esthetics above and beyond the world of dentistry, for me Sirona was the
ideal partner to help us to achieve this holistic approach to the university’s design. One must also not forget that
dentistry comprises highly esthetic aspects in terms of shape and color.”
WHAT IS YOUR EXPERIENCE WITH SIRONA’S EQUIPMENT?
Marga Wagner-Pischel: “We are proud of our facilities, these include the phantom and treatment centers for
pre-clinical and clinical work as well as CAD/CAM technology for computer-assisted dentistry. Sirona meets all our
expectations and we are more than happy to recommend this company as an equipment provider.”
Krems, AUSTRIA
Interview with the honorary consul Marga B. Wagner-Pischel
In 2009, Marga B. Wagner-Pischel,
together with her husband, Jürgen Pischel, established the
Danube Private University (DPU), the first and only completely
private university for undergraduate dental studies in the
German-speaking area.
WHAT WOULD YOU DO DIFFERENTLY TODAY?
Marga Wagner-Pischel: “Absolutely nothing!”
WHAT ARE YOUR PLANS FOR THE FUTURE?
Marga Wagner-Pischel: “The foundation of our university in Krems has proven a huge success. This project has
received a great deal of praise from all around the world. Indeed today, the children of dentists in Dubai are already
learning German so that they can study here. Notwithstanding this, the children of dentists from Europe’s Germanspeaking countries study with us. It is said that we have the most innovative dental training program for graduation
as a doctor of dental medicine (Dr. med. dent.) in Europe. That’s why the time has now come to pass on what we have
learnt. It would be great if, in the future, we were able to market the intellectual ‘university foundation’ product, i.e,
the entire concept behind the development and establishment (from teaching through to equipment) of a private
uni based on European educational guidelines. The Danube Private University has already established contact with
interested parties from Eastern Asia to this end.”
“WE NOW HAVE
CONSIDERABLY MORE TIME
FOR TEACHING.”
WHAT MADE YOU INVEST IN NEW EQUIPMENT AND WORKSTATIONS?
Tobias Winterfeld: “The technology of the old simulation units was out-of-date and this equipment was no longer in great condition.
The units had been built at the end of the 1980s and indeed I myself had trained on them during my degree. Repairs, if at all
possible, were very costly. Continuous course supervision for the semester had become impossible. Particularly when it came to
exam questions, practical tests and exercises on the units were only possible to a very limited extent. We invariably had to move
students to other workstations due to some technical fault or another. In addition to the limited or lacking functionality, the
positioning of the old units was also not ideal. Students always had the table of the person behind them to their rear; exercises in
the 12 ‚o‘ clock position were not possible with most units.”
WHY WAS SIRONA CHOSEN AS THE EQUIPMENT PROVIDER FOR THIS PROJECT?
Prof. Dr. Joachim Klimek: “Sirona offered the best product compared to the competition - both in terms of price and actual equipment.
The operating concept and features of the workstations from Sirona meet the demands of clinical training and considerably facilitate
work for students. Sirona was also able to satisfy individual equipment wishes without any problems and the multimedia feature
offers numerous options for the future.”
04 / 05
WHAT WAS YOUR EXPERIENCE WITH SIRONA DURING PROJECT PLANNING?
Tobias Winterfeld: “I joined this project at the end of the planning process. During this time, everything went
according to plan. The schedule was met and things advanced quickly. Sirona satisfied a number of customized
wishes, for example the lamp settings and the additional x-ray device. There was a dedicated contact at Sirona
for the integration of the existing technology.”
DID YOU HAVE TO OVERCOME ANY OBSTACLES DURING THIS PROJECT?
Tobias Winterfeld: “The only obstacles I am aware of were the structural restrictions of our facility. A solution had
to be found for connection to the vacuum system and questions had to be clarified with respect to, for example,
which amalgam separator the units were to be connected to and whether the suction capacity was sufficient for
all workstations. As far as I know there were no other problems.”
WHAT ARE SIRONA’S WEAKNESSES, WHAT COULD IT DO DIFFERENTLY/BETTER?
Prof. Dr. Joachim Klimek: “I have not yet noted any weaknesses.”
WHAT IS YOUR EXPERIENCE TO DATE WITH THE NEW EQUIPMENT AND WORKSTATIONS – HAVE YOUR EXPECTATIONS
BEEN MET?
Tobias Winterfeld: “I was previously faced with problems on a daily basis; these ranged from water damage
to complete failure. In contrast, there was not a single technical fault during the first semester with the new
equipment. We now experience the odd fault, for example a light doesn’t work but that has nothing to do with the
actual units. They always function reliably. We are particularly pleased with the height-adjustment feature. Here
Sirona really has provided us with a large range of adjustability.”
HOW HAVE STUDENTS RESPONDED TO THE NEW UNITS?
Tobias Winterfeld: “Students who experienced the old course room see the new equipment as a major improvement.
Most students are aware of the Sirona centers from their pre-clinical studies. Those students entering their seventh
semester will have to initially take a step back in terms of treatment center technology as there are still older
centers in this course room, yet this room is also to be updated this year – once again with equipment from
Sirona.”
GieSSen, GERMANY
Interview with Professor Joachim Klimek and dentist Tobias Winterfeld
Prof. Dr. Joachim Klimek, Director
Polyclinic for Restorative and Preventive Dentistry at the University Hospital of Giessen,
Marburg UKGM.
Tobias Winterfeld, dentist
Polyclinic for Restorative and Preventive Dentistry
Course assistant in the phantom course, 21 simulation workstations, 1 master workstation.
30 students per semester, a total of approx. 350 students.
WHAT WOULD YOU DO DIFFERENTLY TODAY?
Tobias Winterfeld: “Everything has gone smoothly to date. Problems tend to occur later on so I can’t actually say
at the moment. I do regret having to go without certain details because of budget restrictions. For example, unfortunately we do not have ultrasound on all the stations. A microscope at the workstation would also have been
good. Yet for teaching conservative dentistry these units are more than sufficient and cover the most important
treatment types.”
WOULD YOU RECOMMEND SIRONA TO OTHERS?
Tobias Winterfeld: “I would certainly recommend Sirona to others.”
“THE CHALLENGE WAS IN THE
LACK OF SPACE!”
WHAT MADE YOU INVEST IN NEW EQUIPMENT AND WORKSTATIONS?
Professor Wöstmann: “The previous set-up no longer satisfied the demands of modern training. Pre-clinical students had to work
on the laboratory benches for prosthetics. To improve this situation, we originally wanted to set up additional benches and equip
each one with a phantom head. However, it very quickly became apparent that this would not be cost-efficient. In the end, we reached
the decision to equip the pre-clinical facilities with authentic and robust simulation workstations.”
WHY WAS SIRONA CHOSEN AS THE EQUIPMENT PROVIDER FOR THIS PROJECT?
Professor Wöstmann: “Sirona offered the best solution for the limited amount of available space. Now we can easily fit two students
at each workstation. Choosing Sirona was not a question of faith, quite simply the company offered the best product in terms of concept,
implementation, design and price.”
WHAT WAS YOUR EXPERIENCE WITH SIRONA DURING PROJECT PLANNING?
Professor Wöstmann: ““Sirona‘s great dedication and commitment to always finding a suitable approach stood out. Right from the
start it was clear that those responsible for planning at Sirona have a lot of experience, especially in the design of truly customized
simulation units. Sirona did not sell us a modular product; instead, we received individual, tailor-made workstations which were
designed to suit our requirements. The workstation concept was developed as part of an iterative process. We looked at various
solutions and prepared our list of requirements together. This resulted in a prototype which we tested and approved here in Giessen.”
06 / 07
DID YOU HAVE TO OVERCOME ANY OBSTACLES DURING THIS PROJECT?
Professor Wöstmann: “Given, on the one hand, our need for motorized adjustment of the torso and, on the other
hand, the limited amount of space available, the downward adjustability of the unit height was restricted. This
meant that the phantom head could no longer be moved far enough down for treatments in the lower jaw. Sirona
provided an uncomplicated and elegant solution to this problem by fitting an adapter in between.”
WHAT IS YOUR EXPERIENCE TO DATE WITH THIS NEW EQUIPMENT?
WOULD YOU RECOMMEND SIRONA TO OTHERS?
Professor Wöstmann: “The workstations have been in operation now for three years and our experience to
date has been very positive. In terms of training, this equipment is a real plus. Our expectations were certainly
satisfied. Students, too, enjoy working here. If we were to do this again, we would implement your proposal and
integrate the IT right from the start. This was not possible in this project due to the limited budget and now we
are going to retrofit the equipment. In essence we would handle the project in exactly the same way.
We would certainly recommend Sirona. The flexibility when planning the phantom workstations was particularly
impressive. Sirona is very willing to take a different approach in order to develop tailor-made solutions for a fair
price for its customers.
GieSSen, GERMANY
Interview with Professor Dr. med. dent. Bernd Wöstmann
Professor Wöstmann has been teaching at Giessen University
Hospital for 15 years. He has been the head of the dental prosthetics
department for four years.
In 2009, 16 Sirona simulation workstations were set up in the
prosthetics department. Prior to this, there were no phantom
workstations.
“THIS NEW ROOM IS
THE BEST I KNOW!”
WHAT MADE YOU INVEST IN NEW EQUIPMENT AND WORKSTATIONS?
Prof. Mausberg: “In a word, the old equipment was rubbish. More than twenty years of intensive use had meant the equipment was
worn out. Some of the lamps were stuck with package tape and the water function no longer worked. There had been a need for new
equipment for our phantom course for some time.”
WHY WAS SIRONA CHOSEN AS THE EQUIPMENT PROVIDER FOR THIS PROJECT?
Prof. Mausberg: “We looked at the new, highly realistic Sirona phantom workstations in Heidelberg and Frankfurt and spoke to the
colleagues there. These provided good references and we also benefited from the experience gained during these projects. Another
major provider was involved who, after showing initial commitment to the project, very quickly withdrew. This may be because
conservative dentistry and prosthetics in Göttingen have been equipped with solutions from Sirona for many years now. Experience
with Sirona has always been positive and, as such, it is not easy for other providers to prove their credentials.”
WHAT WAS YOUR EXPERIENCE WITH SIRONA DURING PROJECT PLANNING?
Prof. Mausberg: “Cooperation with Sirona and the clinic team on the one hand and our construction managers on the other hand
was very good from the word go. It was essential that the particular structural features were taken into account without interrupting
day-to-day work.”
08 / 09
WERE THERE ANY OBSTACLES DURING PLANNING AND IMPLEMENTATION?
Dr. Rödig: “Yes but that was actually due to us as we made personnel changes and, suddenly, I was the main
contact person for structural planning and involved in every single decision. Furthermore, test runs some 14
days before commissioning were planned so as to ensure that all the systems were working properly.”
WHAT IS YOUR EXPERIENCE TO DATE WITH THIS NEW EQUIPMENT AND WORKSTATIONS?
WERE YOUR EXPECTATIONS MET?
Dr. Rödig: “We are especially pleased with the flexibility of the system; the simple and very quick changeover
from right- to left-handed use and back again as well as manual setting of the phantom head. This functions
perfectly on several levels and it is also possible to tilt the heads horizontally with the quick-release system. The
operation light is also great. The LED is as bright as day and focused. Sirona’s work was first-class. The staff were
very dedicated and always available when we needed them.”
WOULD YOU RECOMMEND SIRONA TO OTHERS?
Prof. Mausberg: “Most definitely. The new room is the best I know and is comparable with the facilities in Heidelberg. The path concept was extremely successful. The distribution of the workstations in the room also turned
out very well as did the color scheme. Everything was planned to perfection, right down to the last but important
details. Moreover, for an institution like ours it makes sense to stay loyal to one provider. It is more economic as
the in-house technicians, assistants and auxiliary staff do not have to familiarize themselves with a range of
different systems and spare parts procurement is also considerably easier. As such, one has a central contact
for all matters: Application, maintenance, hygiene, ergonomics, logistics, accessories and spare parts.”
Göttingen, GERMANY
Interview with Professor Dr. Rainer Mausberg and Asst. Professor Dr. Tina Rödig
Prof. Dr. Rainer Mausberg is the acting director of
the Department for Preventive Dentistry, Periodontology and Cariology at Göttingen University Hospital.
Asst. Professor Dr. Tina Rödig is head of the phantom
course and senior physician in the Department for
Preventive Dentistry, Periodontology and Cariology.
“THE BEST SOLUTIONS
FOR OUR SPECIFIC
REQUIREMENTS.”
WHAT MADE THE FACULTY OF DENTISTRY INVEST IN NEW WORKSTATIONS FOR STUDENTS?
Dr. Rolf de Ruijter: “We are training the dentists of tomorrow. Our students have around 50 years of working as dentists ahead of
them. For us it is important that they are taught this demanding profession using modern equipment. Our old Siemens units were
17 years old – I think that says it all.”
HOW DID YOU GO ABOUT PLANNING THE NEW EQUIPMENT?
Dr. Rolf de Ruijter: “We all knew exactly what we wanted and what not. We were more than aware of the spatial restrictions and the
equipment had to fit precisely in the given space. Our list of requirements was both long and demanding. That‘s why we called for
tenders from all over Europe. We systematically applied our requirements matrix and allocated plus points, with Sirona coming out
on top. Of all the providers, Sirona was the company that offered the best solutions for our specific needs.”
10 / 11
WHAT WERE THE CHALLENGES?
Dr. Rolf de Ruijter: “We needed a unit which could be very quickly converted from a right- to a left-handed
version. Sirona proposed a convertible unit which allowed very quick conversion, yet our students were not able
to handle it properly. We thus opted for a classic unit for right-handed use and asked Sirona to attach the dentist
element to the left. Sirona satisfied this rather unusual request.”
WHAT, IN YOUR VIEW, ARE OUR WEAKNESSES, WHERE COULD WE IMPROVE IN THE FUTURE?
Dr. Rolf de Ruijter: “In terms of hygiene requirements in particular, each country has different regulations and
the equipment details sometimes don‘t dovetail into the practice workflow. However, overall, I have to say that
Sirona really did make the impossible possible and took an extremely open and flexible approach to our wishes.
This has allowed us to identify so many practical solutions and it really is a shame that these are only available
for use by us.”
HOW HAS THE EQUIPMENT STOOD UP IN A PRACTICAL SETTING?
WOULD YOU RECOMMEND SIRONA AS AN EQUIPMENT PROVIDER?
Dr. Rolf de Ruijter: “Our expectations and wishes were met in full and we are very satisfied with the new equipment.
The cooperation with Sirona worked really well and this company identified excellent solutions for our demanding
and very specific needs. Sirona kept all its promises, including in terms of the tight deadlines. It truly was a case
of delivery on demand.”
WHAT WOULD YOU WISH FOR THE FUTURE?
Dr. Rolf de Ruijter: “I would like the industry to continually introduce new technologies which, up to now, we didn’t
even know we needed. This provides new stimulus for the dentistry of tomorrow which will ultimately be the
everyday working lives of our students.”
Groningen, THE NETHERLANDS
Interview with Dr. Rolf de Ruijter
At the university in Groningen, around 300 young people study
dentistry each semester and 240 train to become dental hygienists.
In 2010, under the supervision of Dr. de Ruijter, a completely new
training center with 32 Sirona dental units was set up.
“I EXPECT LONGEVITY, QUALITY
AND PERFECTION WHEN IT
COMES TO TRAINING.”
HOW DID YOU APPROACH THE PLANNING OF THIS NEW EQUIPMENT? WERE THERE OTHER COMPETITORS?
Professor Mohamed B. Hassanin: “This was a project for the initial equipping of the newly built university dental clinic. Following
an official invitation to tender, three bids were examined more closely and evaluated by a specialist committee which, ultimately,
chose Sirona. We began equipping the clinic in a first stage in 2010, this involved the installation of 120 C8+ treatment centers and
51 simulation workstations. In 2012, this was followed by a further 175 units, a CEREC system, 60 Heliodent intraoral x-ray devices
and a DVT GALILEOS.”
WHAT MADE YOU CHOOSE SIRONA?
Professor Mohamed B. Hassanin: “Sirona enjoys a very good reputation. I myself studied at the King Saud University and from 1993
onwards trained there with a Sirona unit. Moreover, Sirona units have been part of my entire professional career. They are good and
have proven to be very robust compared to other units. That was a good reference point for me which played an important part in
my decision.”
12 / 13
HOW DID YOU EXPERIENCE SIRONA‘S EXPERTISE IN THE PLANNING PHASE?
WERE THERE ANY PROBLEMS OR OBSTACLES?
Professor Mohamed B. Hassanin: “Sirona and our local dealers worked very constructively together to support
us. This proved to be very important in terms of the obstacles we faced. Unfortunately, the construction company
did not complete all elements as required for the installation of the units. Thanks to Sirona‘s expertise and
assistance, we were able to make the necessary changes to the infrastructure and, in the end, the dedicated
staff at Sirona managed to deliver and install everything on time and we kept to the ambitious schedule.”
WHAT COULD WE AT SIRONA IMPROVE FOR THE FUTURE?
Professor Mohamed B. Hassanin: “After-sales care could be more intensive as we have very high service needs
given that our equipment is used so much, moreover the options open to our team are often limited. The close
contact between Sirona and our in-house engineers is a good basis for this. We, however, would like to be offered
more options for staff training as well as improved dealer training.”
HOW HAVE CLINIC STAFF AND STUDENTS REACTED TO THE NEW TECHNOLOGY?
Professor Mohamed B. Hassanin: “We have been working now with the Sirona units for more than 2 years and
treat more than 1,000 patients in our clinic on a daily basis. The units work perfectly despite this high work load
and this is something our staff really value. Students enjoy being taught on these high-tech treatment centers.
Overall, we are very satisfied with this project.”
WHAT WOULD YOU DO DIFFERENTLY IN THE FUTURE?
Professor Mohamed B. Hassanin: “The C8+ devices are a very good choice. When we equip the four clinics which
are planned for the future, we would like to again rely on these dependable treatment centers. However, we would
also wish for Sirona to launch a successor on the market soon so we can invest in the very latest technology for
our future projects.”
WOULD YOU RECOMMEND SIRONA TO OTHERS?
Professor Mohamed B. Hassanin: “I really enjoy working with the Sirona devices and can certainly recommend
them.”
Jazan, Saudi ARABIA
Interview with Professor Mohamed B. Hassanin
Professor Mohamed B. Hassanin is the director of the dental clinic
at the University of Jazan. The dental clinic has relied on dental
innovations from Sirona since its opening back in 2010. In a two-stage
project, 295 treatment centers, 105 simulation units, 60 intraoral x-ray
devices, a DVT and a CEREC system from Sirona were installed. The
clinic’s director, Professor Hassanin, spoke about his experience with
Sirona in an interview.
“A SENSE OF VITAL WELLNESS
AT THE CENTRE MÉDICAL SAINT
LAZARE.”
WHAT WAS THE MOTIVATION BEHIND YOUR DECISION TO RE-EQUIP THE DENTAL CLINIC?
Catherine Thomas: “The Centre Médical Saint Lazare has numerous locations in Paris and is currently working on several projects
with leading suppliers. We completely redesigned our dental department and equipped it with 50 new treatment centers. We treat
extremely demanding patients who set great store by first-class treatment in an esthetically pleasing atmosphere. We strive to
satisfy their wishes for healthy and beautiful teeth and also aim to express this aspiration through the design of our facility.”
WHAT MADE YOU ULTIMATELY CHOOSE THE TREATMENT CENTERS FROM SIRONA?
Catherine Thomas: “We work exclusively with top partners when it comes to the planning and implementation of our clinic projects.
This is very important to us. Sirona is a prestigious company which creates real innovations which not only offer many functional
advantages but which also look great. In particular, SINIUS is a unit with an attractive silhouette thanks to its dynamic design and
which, at the same time, conveys a sense of comfort and security. With this equipment, we have chosen outstanding quality ‘Made
in Germany’.”
14 / 15
OVERALL THE DESIGN OF THE CLINIC IS BASED ON A SPECIFIC TREND.
WHAT WAS YOUR MOTIVATION FOR THIS?
Catherine Thomas: “The Centre Médical Saint Lazare aims to create an atmosphere of well-being. We can
achieve this to a great extent with shapes and colors. Different colors from the vital color combination were
intentionally selected for the in total 50 SINIUS treatment centers. The names of the colors speak for themselves:
Lagoon, Sunset, Spring and Orchid. The colors of the rooms and furniture harmonize perfectly with this. Large
floral wall designs in orange and pink cast a pleasant light in the corridor. The flowing lines on the back wall of the
large reception desk set the agenda so to speak: This is a place of energized serenity.”
WITH YOUR PRACTICE FURNISHINGS ARE YOU APPEALING TO A SPECIFIC TARGET GROUP OR TO AN ATTITUDE
TOWARDS LIFE?
Catherine Thomas: “The clinic has been designed to appeal to a modern urban target group, after all we are based
in the metropolis of Paris. When designing the rooms the focus was ensuring that all patients, regardless of their
various personal esthetic and style preferences, feel at ease. We achieved this by creating a timeless and
classically modern look which uses various colorful highlights. The style is nevertheless unmistakable:
Unconventional, creative and variable. The unusual color scheme with new color creations and combinations
conveys an attitude to life which is typical of Paris: confident, playful and expressive.”

The Centre Médical Saint Lazare in Paris has redesigned its dental
clinic and equipped it with 50 SINIUS treatment centers. The interior
has been designed to convey a sense of vitality and allow patients to
enjoy a sense of well-being.
“IT IS FIRST AND FOREMOST
PRACTICAL SIMULATIONS THAT
MAKE LESSONS INTERESTING.”
WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO COMPLETELY RE-EQUIP A TREATMENT ROOM?
Anke van Lieshout-Steenbakkers: “The treatment room is an important part of training here. We want to simulate practice-like
situations to enable our pupils to train in realistic conditions. This is a real plus for our course and makes our training center
so popular. We now boast a modern practice room with six complete clinical treatment centers including patient simulators and
phantom heads. We took our lead here from the treatment rooms at the medical university center (Universitair Medisch Centrum)
in Groningen which was also equipped by Sirona.”
WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR EXPERIENCE WITH THE NEW EQUIPMENT AND WORKSTATIONS – HAVE YOUR EXPECTATIONS BEEN MET?
Anke van Lieshout-Steenbakkers: “The practice room features six workstations which have been fully equipped by Sirona. Pupils
have access to all the instruments and materials which they will use in the practice and can train on the phantom head unit. When
we submitted our plans we didn’t know whether management would approve given the investment volume yet luckily they, too,
recognized the importance of a modern practice room. It has turned out exactly as we imagined.”
16 / 17
WHAT WAS YOUR EXPERIENCE WITH SIRONA DURING PROJECT PLANNING?
Anke van Lieshout-Steenbakkers: “When we were drafting the designs for the facility, we were in constant contact
with Sirona and our trade partner Dental Union. We explained our wishes: what we wanted, the number of pupils
to be able to work simultaneously, how we wanted to check the final results and the devices the pupils were to
use. This is how we divided up the project. We communicated regularly on the devices, their positioning and even
on the color scheme. All our wishes were satisfied in full. The staff at Dental Union and Sirona really do think for
themselves. In short, I am extremely satisfied with this cooperation. We meet up regularly to discuss how things
are going. This goes far beyond a normal customer/supplier relationship and that is something I really value.”
HOW HAVE TRAINEES REACTED TO THE NEW EQUIPMENT?
Anke van Lieshout-Steenbakkers: “The course to train as a dental assistant at Koning Willem I College is very
popular. 93 trainees enrolled for this academic year, this is five times more than in previous years. Trainees are
keen to attend the regional training center (ROC) in Den Bosch. The school enjoys a good reputation partly
because it is a pioneer when it comes to digital teaching. Practical simulations in particular make lessons
extremely interesting. Trainees from the Koning Willem I College are also highly regarded by dentists as interns
as they are already one step ahead of others in terms of their skills and know-how.“
Den Bosch, THE NETHERLANDS
Interview with Anke van Lieshout-Steenbakkers
Dental assistants are trained at the Koning Willem I College in Den
Bosch, the Netherlands. The course offered here is very popular and
the number of students is on the rise. Under the supervision of
the training coordinator, Anke van Lieshout-Steenbakkers, in 2008 a
completely new treatment room was set up with six phantom workstations from Sirona in a new college building.
“INNOVATIVE PRODUCTS AND
EXCELLENT ADVICE FROM
GENUINE EXPERTS.”
PROFESSOR JUDGE, THE UNIVERSITY OF MELBOURNE HAS RECENTLY RE-EQUIPPED ITS DENTAL CLINIC.
COULD YOU EXPLAIN THE CHANGES THAT HAVE BEEN MADE?
Prof. Roy Judge: “We are talking here about a truly enormous project. We completely redesigned and re-equipped both a clinical
and teaching department. This enabled us to create a highly modern training center at which students are able to learn all dental
specializations in ideal conditions and also apply their newly gained know-how and skills using the very latest technologies.”
HOW ARE THE NEW DEPARTMENTS EQUIPPED?
Prof. Roy Judge: “The project comprised two areas: a room with 50 simulation units and a clinical area with 51 fully equipped
treatment centers for clinical training in the following specializations: endodontics, pediatric dentistry, periodontology, prosthetic
dentistry and orthodontics.”
18 / 19
YOU DECIDED IN FAVOR OF SIRONA FOR THIS AMBITIOUS PROJECT.
WHY WAS THAT?
Prof. Roy Judge: “Following a careful and demanding tendering process, the Melbourne Dental School decided
to work together with Sirona. The equipping of the new areas required a large range and number of devices
and technologies and Sirona was able to supply and install all the dental technology for both areas: from the
simulation and treatment centers, all the x-ray technology (digital and with storage plates) through to the straight
and contra-angle handpieces. We now also have the state-of-the-art dental CAD/CAM system CEREC.”
WHAT WAS YOUR EXPERIENCE WITH SIRONA?
Prof. Roy Judge: “We decided in favor of Sirona as this company ticked all our boxes. Two factors were especially
important to us: the quality of the innovative equipment and the service and support offered to both teaching
facilities even during ongoing operation. We were more than satisfied with our decision over the entire course of
the project. We kept to our planned budget and everything was finished on time.”
HOW WOULD YOU SUM UP COOPERATION WITH SIRONA?
Prof. Roy Judge: “With this project we experienced Sirona’s customized solutions first hand: innovative products,
excellent advice from genuine experts and outstanding service. I can wholeheartedly recommend Sirona.”
