Swedish Immigrants seeking religious freedom spent their first winter living in dugouts along the river, but they soon became an economic force, producing great quantities of brooms, buggies, bread and beer. They built a hospital and hotel, and became a hub for other Swedes who helped to settle Galva and Galesburg. T his town of a hundred or so folks still retains much of the charm of its original inhabitants. We keep many traditional crafts alive with potters, blacksmiths, broom makers, weavers, a luthier, and quilters still producing the fine work for which we have long garnered praise. Unlike other ‘recreated’ historic villages, this is a working, living community. O pen any door, gaze in any shop window and you are transported back to a more enchanted time. With six museums and more than a dozen galleries you can chat with the artist who produced the treasured heirloom you are passing along as a cherished gift. There are three restaurants, a friendly pub, and two Inns eager to give you a restful and quiet night. Plan to spend a weekend or come just for the day. If you are looking for a quiet getaway or authentic experience, Bishop Hill offers many options: a place to meet friends, a genealogy workshop, a concert in the park, or a stroll down a lovely lane holding the hand of someone you love. A n internationally recognized historic and cultural site, Bishop Hill, Illinois is the kind of place that folks visit year after year, truly Utopia on the Prairie. …where enchantment awaits you behind every door and window! 1 THE BISHOP HILL Mary’s 30 GALLERY 14 Simple Treasures Artwork and Custom Framing Abraham Lincoln and Civil War Photographs and Documents In the Historic 1856 Colony Administration Building Beautifully Appointed Rooms with Private Baths Complimentary In-Room Coffee, Tea, and Snacks Overlooking the Village Park, Just Steps From Bishop Hill’s Restaurants, Shops, and Museums Conveniently located next to Conveniently located next to P. Noon-5pm Winter hours by Appointment 9 Tomorrow and Yesterday “Fellow-citizens, we cannot escape history.” ~ Abraham Lincoln We know Mr. Lincoln visited Henry County several times, spoke on a whistle stop tour, stayed at a hotel just up the road. His words and sentiments still ring true here in Bishop Hill. Here a quarter of the population are direct descendants of the original settlers who founded this town just as Lincoln’s political star was rising. These Swedish Immigrants fled religious persecution to create a utopian society on the prairies of Illinois. Another historian once said, “Show me a nation with a strong sense of its past and I will show you a nation with a bright future.” This could be our town motto, here where the Old Settlers and the Bishop Hill Heritage Association are helping us to forge a better tomorrow. The latest historical restoration, the new Welcome Center, is also the public WiFi hotspot. They host a “Blues and Bluegrass” music series and a web design firm that specializes in bringing small town historical societies into the future, HistoricUnitedStates.com. In the past year there have been several new businesses that have opened, moved or expanded. The old Red Oak is the new home of Sweet Annie’s Primitives, a shop that specializes in unique handcrafted furniture and décor. Hantverk Galleri is the new pottery in town with a fun mix of functional, beautiful and whimsical bowls, mugs, platters, and cake stands. The old Colony Hospital has new life as the Twinflower Inn Bed and Breakfast, which in its first season has already established a reputation for hearty, locally grown food. And Wires and Wood is the home of a luthier, a man who makes dulcimers, strum sticks and other stringed instruments. The Steeple Building, The Welcome Center, The Colony Store, The Dairy Building, and The Town Square have all undergone major renovations thanks to generous private donations, grants from Invenergy, The State of Illinois, The National Park Service and The King of Sweden. There have also been countless hours of donated labor, much of it from volunteers who truly value the relevance of our shared past. Bishop Hill is a place to reflect on our shared history, to linger in the quiet of a wintery afternoon, sing-a-long with a folk singer in the square on a bright summer day, and create a new story that someday you can share with your grandkids… actually, bring them along and give them a gift of history that lives and breathes in Bishop Hill, Illinois. 10 d ~ Questionable Ser tFoo vice a e Gr 10 309 927-3355 Crystal Dennis and Linda Spring, Proprietors Floral Pottery and more... Box 104, Bishop Hill, Illinois 61419 • 309-927-3345 [email protected] • www.illinoishistory.org/gov/hs/bishop_hill.htm The State of Illinois has been an active partner in Bishop Hill’s preservation since 1946 when the village donated the Colony Church, 1848, and Village Park, est. 1853, to the People of Illinois. The Colony Hotel, 1852-1861, Colony Barn, c. 1856-1860, Boy’s Dormitory, 1847, and the Bishop Hill Museum have been added to the Site. Today the Site is administered by the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency. The Bishop Hill Museum, located at the south entrance to Bishop Hill, provides visitors with information and an orientation DVD. While there, visitors can view the remarkable collection of paintings done by Olof Krans. In 1850 Krans, age 12, and his family came to the Bishop Hill Colony. Years later he painted his unique childhood memories. Today he is recognized nationally and internationally as a folk artist. The Museum is landscaped with prairie grasses and plants. Bishop Hill’s most historically significant building is the Colony Church. Here the Colonists gathered morning and evening to worship. The second floor sanctuary has its original walnut pews and chandeliers have been reproduced from an original. The first floor rooms, originally used as Colony quarters, now have exhibits relating to life in the Bishop Hill Colony. The Colony Hotel provided lodging for travelers most being salesmen doing business with the Colony. Sven and Karen Bjorklund managed the property for the Colony. Today the Hotel has been restored and furnished as it would have been during the Colony. The Colony Barn is located where the original Hotel Stable has been. Behind this barn is an heirloom vegetable garden. No admission is charged, but donations are encouraged and welcomed. Groups of 25 or more must have a reservation. The Museum, Park and restrooms are handicapped accessible. There is first floor access to the historic structures. As a local organization formed in 1983, the mission of the Bishop Hill Arts Council is to foster those arts and artisans that reflect the traditions of Bishop Hill. It serves as a vital link to which local organizations, business owners, artisans, civic groups and residents turn to exchange information, financial support and opportunities to expand tourism. The Arts Council is a small nonprofit group largely responsible for building Bishop Hill as a leading tourist destination. The Council sponsors performing and visual artists at events and activities throughout the year including the Quilt Show, Midsommar, Jordbruksdagarna, Harvest Moon, Julmarknad and Lucia Nights. Each year a quilt is raffled during our Lucia Nights celebration in mid-December. This raffle is our fundraiser for the annual BHAC Arts Scholarship and AC programming throughout the year. Quilt raffle tickets can be obtained in most shops throughout the village starting in April. The Council offers a scholarship each year to a promising high school student pursuing an advanced course of study in the Arts. To obtain an application for the scholarship, please contact the Bishop Hill Arts Council at PO Box 47, Bishop Hill, IL 61419 21 An Authentic Experience There is much talk in the tourism trade about people seeking an authentic experience. Let us hope it is more than a trend that many folks are trying to live a more authentic life. Bishop Hill, Illinois has been serving authenticity since our inception in 1846. Many ‘historic villages’ one might visit are actually reproductions. They may have done some archeology and built new, or moved a mish-mash of historic structures. Bishop Hill is very much the same town you would have seen if you came through in a horse and buggy 160 years ago. It is a living, fully functional village with a mayor and fire department. What makes us unique is that the entire town is a registered historic landmark. The people who live here still farm the surrounding country side, cut firewood for the winter, plant broom corn in the spring and celebrate the changing of the seasons as our Swedish ancestors did. Yes, we do this for the folks who come to participate, and because it is our way of living authentically. The crafts and trades that supported our fore-fathers and mothers are still a source of livelihood today. Consider yourself invited, come… step into a land of authentic enchantment … be a part of a living tradition. You can throw the proverbial brush of last autumn on the Valborg Bonfires of spring to welcome the New Year. Grab a ribbon of flowers and dance around the Maypole at the Midsommar Festival. Help us boil sorghum or try your hand at brickmaking during autumn’s agricultural days, Jordbruksdagarna. Sip hot mulled wine and sing a carol during Julmarknad and Lucia Nights on a chilly winter’s eve. There are events in every season for every interest. We host a quilt show every May and both an Antique Market and an Antique Car Show in July. There is a Clay and Fiber Weekend in August, and a harvest moon with ghost stories in October. There are regular concerts and an annual Chautauqua in the square. Any day is a good day to learn a new craft from a local potter, weaver, glassblower or broom-maker. Contact the artist and sign-up in advance to stretch your creativity and make something beautiful. Or you can research your family tree in our extensive genealogical records. Or simply bring a bottle of wine, some cheese and fruit, and someone you wish to pass an afternoon with under an ancient oak tree in the town square, knowing this is living at its finest. 22 Bishop Hill Directory | 2014 Calendar of Events Spring Jubilee April 5 (April 4, 2015) Bishop Hill springs to life with special exhibits, new shops and fresh ideas.
