Why Study Law?
College graduates may take up the study of law with
one or more of many possible career goals in mind.
Some enter law school so that they may eventually
practice law. However, legal qualifications are not
just for lawyers.
Given that legal education is a dynamic encounter,
reading law can be an empowering and enriching
experience.
Whilst a law degree can most certainly lead to an
exciting and challenging career as an advocate and
solicitor, it can also open the door to a wealth of
opportunities in almost every industry sector you
can think of.
You may be a successful lawyer and enter into
politics, business, enforcement (police, immigration
and customs), domestic trade, judiciary (magistrates
and judges), human rights activism, international
finance and banking or simply practice law in your
home town or city.
Law affects all aspects of life and society and is the
mechanism for change employed by governments
across the globe. From the protection of life and
liberty, through corporate law to international
relations, the law is centre stage. A degree in
English law is a highly regarded course of study.
Many of the most troubling moral and political
issues that we face are addressed in our society as
legal issues. An acquaintance with the law, an
awareness of some of the more important legal
decisions that have been made in the last few years
tells us more about ourselves than almost any other
institution or practice. Public debate about
surrogate motherhood, capital punishment, hate
speech, euthanasia, the electoral process and
equality between the sexes is waged in terms of
legal principle and acted out in our courts.
In essence, from doing a law degree one can enter
into a wide variety of fields showing the flexibility of
having a law degree.

The
BAC
Story
Originally known as Brickfields College, the college
rebranded itself in 2003 as Brickfields Asia College (BAC)
to reflect its increasing role in providing quality education
not only to Malaysians but also as a regional player in
higher education. BAC s driving vision is to offer a wide
range of reasonably priced world class programmes to
make education accessible to everyone.
professionally competent and job ready and this has
proven time and again to have given our graduates an
added edge. Students attend workshops throughout the
academic year on time management, mind mapping,
study methods, legal referencing and many more.
Debates and moots are also an integral part of our
activities.
The college is the largest law school in the country and
has over the last 18 years established a strong, reputation
in the area of law. However the college has diversified
over the last few years and now offers a wide portfolio of
programmes including pre university, business, language,
professional skills programmes, and also postgraduate
programmes in the areas of law and business.
Our Counselling Services Department comprises of
academic advisors, personnel student counselors and the
student council. Aimed at student welfare, interests and
campus life, the department organises college wide
activities that incorporates participation from both the
staff and students. Our education counselors are there to
guide and advise students on the appropriate course and
the career advisor assist students in making the right
choice from the various career options available.
Excellent pass rates and top students at external
examinations have become a standard feature of the
Brickfields academic year. Brickfields students have
achieved outstanding results in the areas of A Levels, law,
business, project management and even corporate
administration. Our many students, who have had
excellent results are testimony enough of the blue chip
reputation for our programmes.
The college believes that teaching staff who are highly
qualified, experienced and dedicated are essential to the
long term success of any educational institution through
the educational experience of the students. To ensure
this, the college invests a significant amount of time and
money in ensuring that all programmes are conducted by
highly qualified teaching staff.
Brickfields, prides itself in the delivery of a
comprehensive education that results not just in excellent
academic accomplishments but also in graduates with
qualities that are highly sought after. Learning activities
are widely incorporated into all of the college’s courses.

University of Cambridge International Examinations (CIE) is the world’s largest
provider of international qualifications for 14–19 year olds. The A’ levels is an
internationally recognized Pre-University Qualification and is the most

The BAC Foundation in Arts programme is an entry qualification for degree
programmes in the areas of law, business and management, accounting and
finance, marketing, economics, human resource management, English
Language and others. It is also ideal for those intending to pursue double
major degree programmes. The programme aims to provide students with a
quality pre-university qualification, while equipping students with the
knowledge and understanding of a wide range of areas from law to business
and economics. Students have the option to choose their area of interest
and degree to pursue after completing their foundation studies. Our fully

Study & Life Skills Program
Critical thinking
Critical thinking requires a great deal of
independent thinking which questions the
norm and challenges the ordinary pattern,
which in turn is necessary for creativity and
innovation. Without critical thinking there can
be no personal progress. Here the students
will be taught that questioning the norm is
perfectly fine and in fact encouraged and the
type of questions that will cause the
breakthrough to happen. In this particular
module students will become aware of their
own comfort zone and how it has become
their limitation.
Creativity
In view of a growing and an urgent need for a
more holistic education, Brickfields Asia is
introducing a series of programs in addition to
the ‘A’ Levels and Foundation subjects, which
will concentrate on the individual’s latent
potential and other necessary skills which will
complement the pursuit of his or her course
and career.
Most students who have finished their
secondary education, regardless of which
school they come from, are ill-equipped to
take on the more demanding courses which
require one to have a probing mind and critical
thinking. Many students are also found to have
low self – confidence which acts as a
hindrance when it comes to group studies and
speaking up.
Another area that needs attention is
‘independent thinking’. One of the biggest
problems plaguing our community is ‘herd
mentality’. Students are afraid to think
differently from others and that affects the
quality of thought and hence the quality of
speech and action.
Students go through a study and life skills
program as an induction program to prepare
them not only for the course but also for their
career. The program will focus on study
techniques, time management, goal setting,
critical thinking and creativity.
Study techniques
Studying any subject must begin with a clear
objective as to what is it that needs to be
achieved at the end. Once this is clearly
defined then the techniques will be become
apparent. Hence there is no one correct
technique at any one time. As we know, most
studies are highly exam oriented and to a
certain extent compromises on the real value
of education. Thus it is important that studying
techniques must comprise of skills in
extracting knowledge that is going to help the
student, not just to pass exams but also
prepare him for his/her future.
Time management
Students in general seem to have a great
challenge in juggling their studies and all the
other distractions which they deem to be a
‘necessity’. This particular module will help
them to prioritize their daily activities
accordingly. The program will help students
determine what is ‘important’ and what is
‘urgent’ and will equip the students to be alert
to ‘time wasters’. This will enable them to
optimize their time by zeroing in on activities
that will enhance their potential and increase
their personal productivity.
Goal setting
Research shows that most students do not
have clear and well defined goals and as a
consequence their activities are not
concentrated and they eventually lose focus
on what is important. Their daily distractions
take over and failure in their exams becomes
inevitable. Setting clear goals and the ‘know
how’ to achieve them is a much needed skill
for students. Students must understand how
the mind functions and how to master it to
extract its potential.
As much as we all know that creativity is
important, we must know what the obstacles
to creativity are. Experience and habit happens
to be major obstacles to creativity. Here the
students will be introduced to characteristics
of the right brain and the left brain.
Tudor Rickards – ‘At the moment of insight
creativity may well be the result of both sides
of the brain working together.’
Learning will become much more interesting
and fun when it is done in a creative way. Here
again it is all about breaking the existing
mould and moving on in search of a more
effective way of doing things. This module will
also include mind mapping which is a very
useful tool to comprehend highly complicated
subjects.

The University of London is one of the world’s leading academic
institutions. The University of London External System is the oldest
distance learning programme in the world – its degrees have been
accessible to students worldwide since 1858. Today, it has over 40,000
students in more than 180 countries studying 100 different courses.

courses. The External System draws on the expertise of the University’s

Aberystwyth University
Founded in 1872, Aberystwyth was the first university institution to be
established in Wales. Today, it has over 7,000 registered students, including
over 1,100 postgraduates across seventeen academic departments.
The institution is committed to developing its reputation as a provider of high
quality teaching and excellence in research. It aims to fulfil its special
responsibility for the educational needs of Wales, and to maintain and

There is a regular train service from London and Euston. The University has

To make things easier, we guarantee you a place in one of our fantastic
range of halls on campus for the First Year if you want it. Our
accommodation is actually on campus, so you're always close to the social
and learning facilities you need. There is a mix of accommodation styles
available at this campus, comprising Flats, Houses and traditional Halls of
Residence, with shared bathroom and kitchen facilities. All rooms have
network connections. There are some double rooms at the College Lane
campus. The de Havilland Campus offers modern, self-contained flats for
around eleven students with single bedrooms, en suite facilities, fridges
and network connections. The shared kitchens are comfy and have all the
latest appliances. There are a number of local letting agents in the Hatfield
area. We can offer information and advice on renting privately. Some
students choose to live with a local family, who may even provide meals.

Northumbria's international reputation as a leading modern university is the
result of a distinctive combination of outstanding quality, carefully focused

foundation in the historic City of Newcastle upon Tyne, the University has

The University has, during recent years, consolidated its presence on two major

In response to growing student numbers, the University has increased the
amount of its accommodation and can now offer a place to most new non-local

The Bachelor of Jurisprudence is an external law degree
programme offered by the University of Malaya.
Students on this programme attend lectures and
seminars at Brickfields Asia College to prepare them for
the examinations which are set and marked by the
university. The External Bachelor of Jurisprudence
degree is equivalent to the LLB degree conferred to
students studying internally at the university. This

combine the study of law with another subject. Careful guidance will be given

The BA (Hons) Law with Business Management provides:

Certificate in Legal Practice (CLP)
Legal Profession Qualifying Board
The Certificate in Legal Practice, or more commonly known as CLP, is a course and
examination taken by foreign university law graduates in order to become a qualified
lawyer in Malaysia. The examination is conducted by the Legal Profession Qualifying
Board of Malaysia and is governed by the Legal Profession Act 1976. The Board allows
degree holders from certain universities in the United Kingdom, Australia, and New
Zealand to sit for the examination. Law graduates from local universities are not required
to take the CLP, but are required to complete an additional year of practical studies in
their respective universities. After obtaining the certificate, the student will normally
proceed to do chambering, which is a form of apprenticeship similar to a pupilage in
England. After completing nine months of chambering, the student may finally be called
to the bar and become a qualified lawyer.

This postgraduate programme provides students with an indepth understanding of the legal issues involved with
international trade and will provide students with a reputable
qualification in this exciting area of study.
In order to qualify for the LLM in International Trade Law,
students are required to complete three core modules.
Legal Research in Commercial Law aims to introduce students
to fundamental legal concepts, the structure of the courts and
the sources of law.
Carriage of Goods by Sea explores the legal rules applicable to
carriage of goods by sea.
International Sale Contracts critically examines the legal
principles regulating international sale contracts.
LLM Medical Law
This programme combines in-depth study of Medical Law with
the flexibility of distance learning.
The programme enables participants to gain specialist
knowledge within a practical context whilst enhancing
research skills and developing expertise in a chosen field.
The programme will be of interest to practising lawyers,
doctors, other health care professionals, administrators and
those with a general interest in Medical Law.
The programme is taught on a distance learning basis, with the
provision of study packs, and lectures and workshops with six
optional study days. The programme begins with the study of
Legal Principles and Methodology. This module develops the
research skills necessary to study at Masters level and also
provides an invaluable grounding in legal research methods for
non-lawyers.
Note
Each core and optional module is assessed through the
completion of a written assignment. Students are required to
submit an assignment of no more than 4,000 words for each
module. There are no examinations on this programme.
Students wishing to gain an LLM must complete a dissertation
of between 16,000 and 20,000 words in a related topic of their
choice.
