EIGHT CPC DRIVERS SELECTED AS 2014 NPTC DRIVER ALL-STARS
Eight of CPC’s finest drivers were selected for this year’s 2014 National Private Truck Council Driver All-Star
Awards.
Sixteen Private fleet truck drivers who have demonstrated high performance standards against their peer drivers
throughout the country based on customer service, safety, adherence to company standards, regulatory compliance and community service were honored by the National Private Truck Council (NPTC) as National dRiver
All-Stars. The award, co-sponsored by Navistar, Inc., was presented at a ceremony that took place in conjunction with NPTC’s National Safety Conference, September 11-12, 2014.
“These drivers embody all the characteristics, skills and attitudes that are the heart of what enables the private
fleet to continue to deliver exceptional levels of customer service, “accourding to NPTC President and CEO
Gary Petty. “They are ambassadors, not only for their company, but for the entire private fleet community. We
are honored to recognize these private fleet drivers for meeting high performance standards in the fields of customer service, safety and compliance.”
CPC is very proud of these drivers and our past driver winners. CPC has more NPTC Driver All-Stars than any

CPC Safety Manager Tip of the Month……. Rick Hinkle
It Only Takes a Moment: Five Great Reasons To Work Safe
Have you ever thought about what would happen to your family if you were seriously injured at work?
This is not something most of us like to think about. But, stop for a moment and consider how many times
a day you do something unsafe at work, something that could result in an injury.
THE MOMENT THAT CAN AFFECT THE REST OF YOUR LIFE
For a professional driver, it may mean choosing to drive too fast for the conditions. In the next moment,
you could find yourself sliding off the road resulting in a crash that leaves you with permanent damage to
your legs, preventing you from ever returning to your driving job. Regardless of the circumstances, you
could find yourself the victim of your own decision.
Sadly, when a worker makes the poor decision to get in a hurry, take a short cut, or not follow safe work
procedures, the family can be a victim, too. The impact of a workplace injury on a worker’s family can
be significant. The family is often affected by the cost of medical care and the impact of recovery time
and rehabilitation. The family often has to deal with physiological and psychological changes as well as
vocational and economic impacts.
FIVE REASONS TO TAKE A MOMENT

Employee Safety Tip of the
Month winner for October
Congratulations to Rene Conde for the
winning Safety Tip for October. Rene
operates out of the Walgreens Waxahachie,
Texas Distribution Center and has been
with CPC since September, 2006.
“At Walgreens we slip seed the trucks so
we drive different trucks on a daily basis.
My safety tip would be that when coming
in for a shift to properly take time and do a
pre-trip inspection and a post trip inspection so that you don’t have unnecessary
breakdowns and delays. The driver before
may have failed to do a post-trip or even
perhaps missed something. By doing your
checks you can know your vehicle and get
the repairs done to keep you safe on the
road and prevent potential hazards.”

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) has
expanded a waiver program that helps veterans and other military
personnel transition into civilian jobs as commercial truck and bus
drivers. The agency is giving veterans more time to get a commercial driver’s license (CDL) without needing to take a driving test,
and is now allowing at least one state to issue medical waivers to
drivers who have lost limbs.

HEALTHY HOLIDAY HABITS
The holidays are again upon us – which also means it’s time for
gatherings that can tempt you to break healthy eating habits and tip
the scale in the wrong direction.
Research shows that most people don’t gain as
much weight as they fear they will over the holidays. However, many can’t seem to lose their
holiday pounds, according to the National Institutes of Health (NIH).
Maintaining weight is a matter of energy
balance. When more calories are consumed than
burned, the extra energy is stored around the
body, mostly as fat, and results in weight gain.
To maintain your weight balance your caloric
intake with the amount of calories burned.
Practice these eating habits and try to achieve balance this holiday season:
• Eat a healthy snack before leaving home
• Bring a healthy snack dish to pass
• Avoid sugary beverages, and choose plain water or sparkling water
• Start the meal with a salad
• Scope out buffet and pick out healthy items before loading up your plate
• Limit yourself to only two small servings of indulgence foods
• Use a smaller plate and eat slowly to avoid overeating
• Choose more vegetables and eat fresh fruit instead of sweets
• Skip the butter and eat the turkey without the skin
• Stay active by taking a walk or planning party activities such as dancing

Build Your Defense
Against Colds and Flu
When it comes to avoiding colds and flu, you can benefit from thinking like a defense-minded coach. An
unknown sports figure once said, “Defense wins games!” And you can win against colds and flu with good
defensive strategies.
The strategies presented here are probably not new to you, but may serve as a refresher, especially if you
battled with respiratory ailments at least once this past year.
Defense strategies for cold and flu prevention:
4 Wash your hands thoroughly and frequently, especially in public places, including clinics, malls and at work.
4 Get enough sleep and rest every day
4 Keep your distance from sick people, crowds, smoke and irritants
4 If you share a telephone with others, wipe the speaker clean at least daily
4 Get flu vaccination every October or November
4 Eat a Healthy diet with a variety of foods and drink plenty of water each day
It may not be possible
to avoid colds and flu
entirely, but a good
defense will keep the
score in your favor.

The Federal
Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) is
working on rule changes that will explicitly allow
electronic signatures on required documents like
logs, employment applications and inspections reports. The
agency issued a draft version of the rule on April 28, 2014,
but as not yet indicated when the final rule will be ready.
The rule would permit the use of electronic methods to “sign,
certify, generate, exchange, or maintain” records, as long
as the documents contain all required information and are
accessible and usable.
