A bit of background • The earliest traces of Shepherd Huts goes back as far as the 16th century and the reign of Queen Elizabeth 1, although most recognised thinking says that Huts became popular in the 18th and 19th centuries. • As the name suggests the original use of huts was on farms, where farmers would use whatever material they had to make them. • Use of huts was at its peak in the 19th century, but then started to become less popular as mechanical machinery started to appear on farms and estates in the early 20th century. • The Shepherd hut was intended to provide practical accommodation for a shepherd and was really a complete home rolled into one, with kitchen, bedroom, dining room and lounge all being housed under the one small roof. • Things have changed a bit and now, like The Fish, Shepherd Huts are used as a fun and very romantic accommodation option for hotels, as offices and as garden snugs in private houses. • Today Shepherd Huts are typically hand crafted and are made from a mixture of oak and corrugated and foundry cast steel.
